- The world's oldest surviving electric railway is on the Isle of Man and this video celebrates this astonishing Victorian masterpiece.
Using footage from recent years, it also includes rare footage of the Mercury Arc Rectifiers, now no longer in use, and a trip made in October 2013 down the full length of the line in Car Number 1, the oldest electric car still in service in the world. Culture Vannin was invited to accompany Andrew Scarffe and Paul Marshall, who were crewing the car, on this private journey.
There's no commentary - just the sounds and images of the Manx Electric Railway.
Culture Vannin exists to promote and support all aspects of culture in the Isle of Man. We develop innovative, inclusive and exciting projects that promote and support all aspects of Manx culture.

A wonderful reminder " that if it works keep it" !
The trams are in fabulous condition. I'm glad to see that it is available for people to enjoy.
Oh a neat _Railway Series_ book fictionalizing this exact railway to the Island of Sodor world would definitely be astounding to make as a rendition part of the franchise, and would absolutely promote the Manx and Snaefell Railways quite a bit.
Rode the Electric Railway several times on the 2 holidays I had to the Isle of Man years ago.
Nice video and reminder of been there, on the trains 🚞 😀
Wonderful
Super tramwaj z pneumatycznymi hamulcami! I te prostowniki rtęciowe w stacji zasilającej!!!◘○◘○◘◘○ Super tram with pneumatic brakes! And these mercury rectifiers in the power station !!!
Smashing look at that history and still going 🇮🇲🇮🇲🇮🇲🇮🇲🇮🇲
Wonderful ride, but I wish there was a commentary telling us what was going on
Good point. But very nice video quality, and a delightful railway.
I first went on this line back in 1958 on a school holiday so have forgotten all about how good the ride is, but as other comments have stated - it's a shame there is no information displayed which is a pity as it is extremely well filmed.
Love the 'toast rack'
Yeah, that's what we called them as kids at Llandudno as well
A superb railway. Yes they are trams but they also go across the landscape like a railway. They’re kept in wonderful condition and run by a dedicated staff.
In other circumstances things of this age and historical importance would be parked in a museum and the public kept off but these are in service and working.
Reminds me of the Mattapan line here is Mass. Although it is running PCC cars.
I remember that day of the lightning strike that blew the Ramsey power ..
I was in the Mines Tavern having a drink before going home ..
Myself & some guests we had been to Ramsey & the north that day and the MER was our transport to and from home.
Wonderful footage and a beautiful line. Those mercury-arc rectifiers! - is someone going to tell Tony Stark you were there a hundred years before him? 😛
I had no idea what those were, they look like prop from a 1950s science fiction film. Thanks!
hermoso viaje saludos
Is this a tourist only thing or is it worth using daily for commuting?
Locals use it as s local bus !
If they live near ?
It's literally a commuter tram. That's what's kept it alive. Tourists just love it too.
I am a railfan from Greece. I am looking for persons railfans for letterwriting to exchange photos and other informations about trains. The letterwriting postly and no e: mail.
These aren’t trains, they’re more of a tram
Honestly, I would say they straddle the line.
It says Tramway on the side of the car so it's what it is!
