  • Hello and welcome to episode 30 of Trash to Track.
In this episode we look at a Lima Crab loco that went from a simple service of one loco to a major overhaul of three locos from three different people!
I strongly advise that if you have a Lima Crab in your collection to search it out and check for the metal expansion problem highlighted in this video.
    Thanks for looking.

I had to file the weight in my Lima King. Good runner now. Great repair video. Enjoyed watching. Cheers Paul.

I love Lima engines. I have quite a few. They are cheap to buy and great for upgrading.

Instead of Three birds with one stone it should’ve been the three Crabs with one stone lmao. Excellent restorations Dan!

As if the tender wasnt already wide enough 😂 I always found it amusing that Lima « corrected » Fowler’s design by making his narrower tender the same width as the loco.

A good video Dan that had me checking out my old Lima Crab from a "Golden Series" Lima set from way back when. It's basically never run for all these years but as I'm trying to get back into building a model railway I decided to see if the Mazak tender bulge was there, and it was. All the screws came out no problem. One tender clip broke. I don't have any available weights so I ground off the excess on my bench sander to reduce the cross section size so the tender body would fit back on the chassis, over the weights. Also checked out the loco weight and needed to do the same thing there to get rid of the bulging. Once the tender sides have been squeezed back, per your process I expect to have a reasonable working loco but then I have to change the drivers because I'm using code 75 BH track and the pizza cutters don't run too well on the lower profile rail.
    Cheers
    Bob

Have two of these crabs myself and preformed the same chassis weight trick some time ago. I agree they are fine models for their age and go well if maintained properly.

It seems there would be a small market for someone to take molds of these weights and cast up some replacements.

Didn't know it was that bad. Runs brilliantly after you sorted it.
    Thanks bud.

A lot of the problems here on the crabs are pretty similer to the HO 4Fs, I tried to get the drawbar screw out the loco end and ended up snapping the thing in half. Another problem with it is the tender relies on body clips and the other drawbar screw but the clips have snapped so I've had to glue the tender body on to keep everything together hecause it relies on those clips to keep it and the motor chassis in place.

Just wondering.. with those weights and especially the one in the loco frame... after you cleaned it up with the file would it not be a good idea to give it a coat of paint to stop the air from getting to it and make it less susceptible to breaking down like the tender weights? as I have been doing some reading up on Mazak Rot (Zinc Pest) and a few people have said that if you can get to it early enough and apply a coat of paint this will slow down the process.

If you look at the loco weight there are two lugs. On opening one of three crabs I picked up I discovered a pickup attached to the weight which picks up from the middle wheel axle. Has anyone else encountered this?
