Samsung Galaxy Z Flip review: temper your expectations

- Samsung has another folding phone, and this time it's the Galaxy Z Flip. Dieter Bohn reviews the screen, the hinge, and the cameras. It may not be worth $1380, but you can see that we're getting close to folding screens becoming "normal."

Would you buy the Galaxy Z Flip?
The Verge hell nah
nope
Not really
I will buy this phone. I mean z flip 4. The 4th version of it
yes is so good and futuristic then the crapy iPhone you work and all your videos is about how to reduce the value of samsung products and of course apple pays well 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Just wait and watch it become the Escobar fold 3.
Lmfao
For only 299$ 😂
Lol🤣🤣

"the hinge makes it hard to open with one hand"
*Proceeds to open it effortlessly multiple times*
The Verge... sigh
Tbf, He does say, "You can do it but it's kinda hard."
obviously the video is edited to include shots where he does manage to open it...
It should be named *Galaxy V Flip* .
Actually, that could have made more sense.
this makes sense
It will be call the Escobar fold 3...
Drinking game: take a shot every time Dieter says "normal" in this video
I'll get alcohol poisoning.
Omg I’m at like 6 shots of jack danielles slow downman
Wow why such a negative review? I think we have to appreciate the fact that Samsung keeps innovating no matter what public perception will be. This keeps the smartphone industry interesting and ever changing. Not to mention other OEMs will be on edge now to compete like Apple.
Negative review? it's a normal review.
k7 definitely negative imo
@@RjeyTech innovating? wow that word is so overused nowaday lol. For a product with this many flaws to be called innovating. Every single flaw that he mentioned with the Zflip is true, you people just get all offended that he didn't overhype the thing and use big fancy words like 'innovating' to entertain you.
It seems that people are missing the point on foldables phones. It is an ontological issue. If it bends, obviously, there is a crease.
This comment took me back to philosophy in college
IKR ppl are so dense.

And it's obviously not going to be all glass but there IS glass
This video should be titled "I DONT KNOW" cuz that's all he says 😅
Dear phone reviewers,
Please stop complaining about bezels. We need bezels to hold the phone without accidentally touching the screen. Thank you.
No we don’t 😊. The reason do accidental touches is curved displays such as on the galaxy s20s
@@joshuamartinez970, Nice try. But that's not the only phone that has constant accidental touches. It is the biggest offender though, I'll give you that. And I'm typing this on one of those right now.
Timothy Lane I have constant accidental touches on my s10 that I use to primarily test xcloud 😃 I have absolutely none on my iPhone 11 Pro. Its obvious due to the curve
@@joshuamartinez970, Interesting. My friend has a OnePlus 7 Pro, and he complains nearly as much as me. He ended up getting a case to fix the issue. But I'm sure you're right, it's just the curve.
Edit: I just asked him about this issue, and he says it has a curved display, like the S10. So, I stand corrected. Maybe you're on to something.
@@Kahless_the_Unforgettable lol the 7 pro has an even more severe curve than the s10, it really is because of the curve
Imagine if Apple did this y'all be singing different tunes.
Not really, Apple isn't the type to mass produce glorified prototypes. No hate to Samsung/Huawei etc., it's really cool and I think helpful to push the tech forward and open peoples' minds. However, the reason people will be more excited about the Apple version is because they'll wait until the technology is mature enough and their product refined enough that it makes reasonable sense for a consumer.
Of course, at that point Android versions will also be at a similar level.
I swear
@@iallaby Apple stopped innovating and is only copying competition at this point
People would be hating even more if Apple did it.
Cap. I wouldn’t
"We don't know the standard for a folding phone."
Why do I get the feeling he is just waiting for Apple's version of the foldable iPhone?
Yeah, he hated on this phone so much while trying to compliment it at the same time..
Ikr?🤔
Exactly. If this were an iPhone it would be praised to high heaven for it's breakthrough technology.
it'll happen when samsung sells the tech to apple. just like how everyone raves about iphone screens, chips and camera are better then samsung....and forget they are made by samsung. who are laughing all the way to the bank. lol

iphone Flip - the phone most people should buy. (9)
Consumers and reviewers scream phones are getting boring, Samsung has released two folding phones and it seems not good enough, there's no pleasing honestly
Why suddenly change opinions after hyping this phone that much.
AnfoFlash He probably watched Jerry Riggs Everything.
I agree it is a bit strange
AnfoFlash They hyped the phone up so much to get more views and clicks. Now they’re giving us the real review.
Slap an apple logo on the back and it will be the best most innovative phone in the world.
This phone is real innovation take notes Apple
When you have small but deep pockets

Verge: Temper your expectations
My Brain: Temper your dreams!
sometimes i think this dude should design his own phone and use it because he always has so many complains about all phones. Like dude give a break to new technology it takes time for them to evolve or start making your own damn phone and lets see how other feels about it.
What's the point of reviewing something when you ignore all the bad things about it? Just watch some ads then.
So negative. So much for encouraging innovation. I guess we're better off sticking to the same boring phones with 5 cameras, better battery life, etc. How dare Samsung try something new.
Exactly...a bummer of a "review". Sounded like he was egh because Apple didn't come out with it first!
Imagine going to the beach with the z flip
You'll need a pouch lol
I v gone to the beach already 3 times. No problem at all

What is this review?
"I don't know"
🙃😀😀
Hahahah this hate of flex mode is so bias. If apple
did that I’m sure he would think it’s a great solution.
This guy hates on anything that isn't apple
The state of reviewers and their biased ways is sad. This entire video is simply done to keep you from buying this phone. The lack of any form of positivity or excitement for something that is truly innovative is sad, yet Apple can launch a phone with the same look for 7+ years with minimal features and the entire review is positive and overall tone is excitement. It's truly pathetic. Guarantee if Apple were to come out with a flip phone, and this reviewer would praise Apple for the innovation and say how it'll only get better
I don't like how he reviewed this at all. It was more cons...and didn't point out the pros
Are you sad that there's no Apple logo behind? 🤔
They hate on Samsung soooo much, I would love an unbiased review from them one day
If apple made this phone they would have said different....
The Verge is biased towards Apple products. Simple. It would take Apple years to research at Samsung's level. Also, while you're at it ask Apple to use its own display. Oh wait you need Samsung or LG for that! There is a reason this channel can never compete with MKBHD or Unbox Therapy for that matter.
Woah, so verge goes super-harsh on everything except for an iPhone I guess. This was way too harsh for a device that’s bringing a brand new technology.
it wouldn't be the verge if they weren't bringing up the iPhone
I bet he would've shower praises of how the phone is Innovation and Revolutionary if it was made by Apple ..
The verge is just bias towards American companies

I'm still very much into the idea of foldable smartphones. Hopefully there will be some cheaper ones in a few years.
This guy will never satisfied but his iPhone so the question is why he is reviewing this? Oxymoron isn’t wouldn’t you say?
I just think he’s a double standard hypocrite. He is reviewing this phone because others are also reviewing it too, and he has nothing else better to say but to criticize it, because he doesn’t have any new information to share. Honesty don’t review something for the sake of you do it and I do it too.
Awesome video production. But "nobody should spend $1,300 on this phone" sounds a bit sweeping to me. Plenty of people did, in fact, buy one already.
yeah, but they're stupid
Had my z flip since launch now. Any questions? It's holding up really good, been dropping it like crazy and I don't have any issue at all with it. I do have a dbrand skin on it though
How was is today? Does the crease appeared?
@@MikanSakura7ginnm i don't have anymore, sold it about 3 months ago. But the phone has been fine the whole time. The crease if there everyday but it doesn't bother me at all. The phone or really special and you don't think about the crease at all👌
This video is just straight up hate ...
Dude,it’s a phone that folds!!
way too negative for a reviewer, anti-android?
The verge : The site that many people think is biased against Samsung. Site like BGR.
i feel the same. and they are always on the Huawei's side
The only person I've seen open the folding phone the right way!!💯
Yup... It should be a one-handed affair.
"Boring" is such a shocking word that I didn't expect to hear in this review, while no "boring" word mentioned during iPhone review (it's a great phone (fact !), but it's ultimately very incremental update lol) when this has more than once 🤷🏻♂️
In my mind : It's a freaking phone that can can fold its display, something we couldn't imagine last several years duh ...
This guy thinks only apple can do something amazing and I hate his reviews .. I don't actually give this kind of comments but I've to for this guy ..
This guy never praises any engineering of Samsung but only apple..... Very sorry to say.... Have seen lots of videos
"This is the best screen on a folding phone to date. What does that mean? So what." - Talking about the Galaxy Z Flip
"This is the best iPhone of any iPhone to date. This is amazing." - Talking about the newest iPhone
More...Z flip can't get any love because Galaxy is in front instead of iPhone.
He isn't that good of a tech journalist
Damn the verge has some extremely nice visuals
So the Razr has cameras from like 2015 yet we wanna complain about 2019 cameras on the Z Flip? First World Problems Aye Haha. I think reviewers going forward should only be compared to other foldables at least until the Galaxy Fold 2 come out because that thing is going to be a beast with cameras and specs if it still cost $2000. The only foldable right now at least in the US with true flagship specs is the Galaxy Fold!
I don't know 😂😂
At the end of the day, it goes back to the tech argument of "never buy the first iteration of a new device", and when it comes to flip phones, maybe don't buy the second.
There are flip smart phones, just not all screen style, but they don't sell them in America.
This technology is cool, and may be viable in a couple of years. But unless you have money to blow, there isn't a point in risking spending your money on it, yet.
Johnnie Manson, Samsung has offered flip phones for years.
It was under the product line of Samsung Galaxy Folder, look it up.
It’s nothing incredible in terms of specs, but it’s a flip smartphone that can do necessary business related things like email and such in a small foldable package.
Don’t get me wrong, the Z Flip is leagues ahead of if in terms of what it can do, but if I HAD to purchase a flip phone, I’d prefer the keypad variant right now, because I don’t trust the longevity of the Z Flip or Motorola Flip.
Whoever ? ;

I'd buy that folder phone but they are super expensive on Amazon.
Is not innovation until apple brings new emojis!!
josue CH Man, it’s innovation, but it just isn’t worth $13-1400. Why bring Apple into it, because we wouldn’t tolerate this from Apple...would we?!
@@calvingreen7197 yes they will!! That's the difference
josue CH Let me tell you something... Apple’s phone will be better right out the gate, and it isn’t because they’re more innovative...it’s because they allowed everyone to make ALL the painful mistakes, so they don’t have to. They will tweak it and because the presentation is so pretty, they will get praised. That’s the painful reality of the whole situation...for those who love the other companies. That’s why I don’t have allegiances to any company...then you don’t care who gets praised and when.

Obviously a "normal" review for a Samsung phone. Expected nothing else from Verge.
I dnt really like this guys reviews.
Me neither, is he ever happy with anything?
Lame review by this little boy. Next!!!
Non foldables are just so good now it’s hard to pay more and take a step back in overall quality I.e screen, camera
Can someone count how many times he said "normal" ?
This phone is normal blah blah blah
Come on ! We want a flying phone
"Flex Mode" LOL!!! Let me flex in front of the camera.
It's not bad, it's not great, IT'S NORMAL. I'll wait.
But normal is good he said, but not too normal, its just a curiosity, but expensive. If it was cheap then itd be good, but then it'd be normal which is bad?
People saying they will hold on to their note 10+, s10+ etc, I want to ask you guys: What makes you so obsessed with tech that you would want to upgrade from a six month/ one year old phone? I mean would you even notice the upgrades on a new phone so soon? More than a waste of money, it is a serious detriment to one's mental peace. We need to chill and relax, settle down with one phone for at least 2-3 years. There is no end to the quest for the perfect phone. You end up not enjoying the tech you have with you. Upgrades feel better when they are spaced apart longer.
Don't like the tone and tenor.
Raymond Licon hope you liked the bass and contrabass, and the soprano
His videos are more and more painful to watch. Takes himself way too serious. It's tech not Shakespeare. Relax and enjoy
it’s a good experiment but no thanks
What does being an Apple channel have to do with it!!!? There have been Android-centric channels that have said it’s cool but...don’t buy it. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t have potential, but the phone is extremely delicate and isn’t for everyone. If you can’t afford to lose 1400.00 then don’t buy, because the potential of it happening is higher than with your “normal” phone.
Svetlana Vivalova I’ve actually tried and tested the phone myself so I can actually come to a valid conclusion. Shut up and take your preaching elsewhere.
@@svetlanavivalova6543 are you Samsung's defence advocate?

This guy was obviously payed by Samsung competitors. I just can not believe the amount of amateurism shown here. There are no mentions about the phone speed, camera... All the usual and important information when you talk about tech. Instead he made up some test that would fail 100% of iPhones, Samsungs, and all other phones. Video is completely ridiculous and this guy has 0 credibility!
This guy I noticed he doesn't like anything
Phone has exceeded my expectations. Breaks necks too
iPhone 11 pro max user here, enjoying the Z Flip since one week and considering switching. This phone has compromises but it's really good and I'm enjoying the small form factor when closed. I only wish the tiny screen would be bigger and allows me to interact with notifications
I honestly don’t get the point of the glass under the plastic. Now it´s easy to scratch and very delicate and likely to crack on drops. Should’ve just kept it all plastic
I'm waiting till 2023 I'm getting the 4 generation for this phone if they make a 4 gen
The only bad video with Dieter, the only good Verge reviewer. This review just doesn't make sense...
When this guy see something: Normal.
There's a feature in the z flip that will guide you to get the best photo using lights and surroundings. The only problem I have with the phone is how delicate it is. The outside part of the phone is very slippery and can easily slip from your hand. Otherwise I don't have any problem with this phone :) if you like flip phones in the past, you won't have a problem with it.
You asking too much for 2 years old new technology
Kerb your enthusiasm
Great comment. I'm watching all ten of the series right now.
Did this video have a different thumbnail when it was first published? Seems different.
So what phone does this guy like?? Crapples??
Verge Review: I don't know!
sharper than the razr...
JerryRigsEverything is the gold standard for testing screen’s scratch durability
Such a negative attitude, very unpleasant video
Fantastic review, the only honest review I read regarding the phone, no protection towards the brand or cuddling, smoothing things out, it's 110% spot on.
I found this non helpful.
Just imagine dieter reviewing it in 2010. How amazed would everyone be
I came here to see review and all I hear is complaints.
Meh, y'all remember that foldable gameboy?
This is the same with extra steps
6:42 Lol, this was actually the most promising feature for me.
I travel a lot by myself and often I want to take some selfie pic by some famous landmark or amazing scenery but I find it a hassle getting my mini tripod out, attaching the phone to it and propping it up somewhere.
But no, I'm not going to buy a $1,400 phone just so I could take selfies more conveniently, haha.
I think the plastic coating on glass makes it far easier and cheaper to repair as the service center would just have to replace the plastic.
And what I heard from another tech RUclipsr is that the glass screen gives the colors more vibrancy.
Ok Verge.. let's never try to innovate again... Happy?
But Zack did his tear down of this phone and showed that there is glass underneath the plastic layer, not on top.
this video is literally just bashing the phone the entire phone..
Some of the tests people do are truly stupid. Why put the flip in a bag of dust?? Why chuck it around? If you really want to, you can destroy any phone in any number of ways. How about using it normally and then commenting on its durability?
Great opinion piece. I actually don't care about the specs too much as long as the normal things work well. I currently have the Note 10+ and it's, in many ways, too much phone for me. I'm buying the Z because I like the way it looks. I love both the form and the function. The foldability and slightly smaller size are very appealing. I won't be holding it up to tech reviewer standards on a day-to-day basis. If this is the new normal when it comes to phones, I'm all for it! De gustibus non est disputandum.
Isn't the pricing a problem for you?
@@binoymathew246 I suppose it is a bit on the pricey side. I'll probably offset the purchase a little by selling or trading in the Note10+.
