Like it or not......Heilung has changed lives on every continent.
Their rituals evoke every emotion known,and a few that just can't be explained.
They have said that they don't have fans, they have brothers and sisters.

Even just hearing/reading people talking about how Heilung's music/rituals affect them and others gives me supreme chills of the best kind. They've really sunken into my bones since I discovered them.
@@My_Druid_journey. I was at the festival, Castlefest, when they did their first performance in their present style. It's the one you can find on their YT channel. But I had to be with my kids 200 meters away on the festival terrain. A few years later they had their ritual 65km/40mls away from my home and decided to hike to it. Sat front row.
Castlefest itself is amazing, both visitors and crew. Heilung themselves said 3 days before the performance the final form wasn't there yet and the Castlefest crew was essential in getting it together. To have been part of the people who made it possible must have felt like magic.
I've heard this debate before about how historically accurate they are or not. From the little I've heard in interviews etc of this band I don't think any of them are trying to get a doctorate in the history of this period rather they are trying to take elements from the past and combine it with elements from the present to create something new ... it's kind of like you know what artists do 🙂

Debating their historical accuracy is just silly. They draw inspiration from ancient Germanic culture; they never said they were recreating musical performances as they looked and sounded back in the day.

Attending their rituals (concerts) is a life changing experience. I have been to many musical experiences, but this is the most intense.
Seen them last thursday. I felt extremely relaxed after their performance shaking on my legs when going down the stairs.
I'm Northern German, so I'm (I guess, at least in some way) one of the prime targets for an audience of Heilung.
When I hear their music at home or on the move, there are waves of emotions rolling over me that I didn't even know I had in me. Nothing that we all know throughout all of our lives, not love or hate, not sympathy or apathy, nothing I don't know, shallow as that. Certainly those are part of it but it feels deeper rooted than that.
Maybe it's the way the drums are beat, maybe it's the way she sings and they mumble or scream, most certainly it is the combination of all the little things Heilung does but it truly does feel like they bring out something ancient that still lives in us and that is hard to put into words.
Maybe it is understanding?
An understanding of the nature around us and our lives with it? On my way to work I see trees and ravens just as much as I see cars and tall buildings, but it's the greenery, the puddles after rain, the crows and seagulls making noise, that is amplified when listening to Heilung. And it brings me down on a more down to earth mood, something completely free of modern struggles.
And as you say in the video; not all songs are meant as something happy and joyful - I don't mean I lose myself in the music and am free of *all* struggles.
But when listening to songs like Asja or Anoana it certainly does feel like my inner battery is being recharged and that I'm slightly more aware of everything that is nature around me, including of course my fellow humans. It helps focussing on important things: the relations between us and other people, us and the land around us, us and a society that maybe went a tad too far from how close it used to be tied to nature, at least for me.

I think there is a universal element to their work that reaches deep into our collective unconscious in a way that we all benefit from. My wife is Austrian and couldn't give half a hoot 😂

I am of Scandinavian ancestry, and Heilung touches a place in my heart and soul that I didn’t know was possible. May your sword be sharp and true, but may it be sheathed and that you are surrounded by those you love.
Heillung is a group that attempts to bring forward history and customs of northern Europe and other cultures through their music and energy. It would be unfair to split hairs as to the historical accuracy of their content. What matters is what listener gains and experiences from their efforts. I have listened and enjoyed their music. As a new listener to this genre, i applaud the artistic devotion and dedication. Well done.
Heilung is one of the most unexpected, pleasant surprises I have ever had musically. They are one of the most evocative, emotional bands I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. If any band could be said to possess magic, it would be them.
I’ve heard it said that Wardruna are the bard that visits your village and introduces you to your heritage. Heilung are the shaman that teach you how to relate to it.

Thank you for your research. I think that regardless of how accurate or inaccurate they are. As a musician I have to give them mad props for they’re musicianship. They put a lot of effort into they’re craft. I would even go as far as to say they put they’re heart and soul into they’re music. To me that is priceless. Can’t wait to see them live in Dallas!!!!
I feel like there's a point past which faithful recreation becomes a creative prison. Heilung dazzles us because they combine these ancient musical forms with constantly surprising compositions. One never knows where the songs are going. They lull you into a trance and then shift gears in unpredictable ways. When I hear other, more scrupulously accurate recreations of ancient music, it just doesn't quite take me on that adventure. My ears are too modern, and I find most traditional music too conventional, too easy for my ears to predict. They can be enjoyable explorations of history, but I personally want more from music.

I saw them in Atlanta, it was purely a thing of magic and wonder. I would grab some ear protection if you are sensitive to loud noises. Depending on where you sit, the audience can be deafening after each performance.

What I get from Heilung's music is the idea that despite the centuries stretching between us and the ancient peoples, humans have always been humans. Our fundamental virtues and flaws transcend the boundaries of history and culture, and the sooner we recognize that our similarities are more noteworthy than our differences, the sooner we can move forward as a species
I think the important thing to remember about Heilung is that they're "influenced by" and not "accuracy".
I love what they are doing, and Maria Franz is amazing in everything she does.

I would have to say that when I listen to Hielung I feel a connection to the gods I never felt from going to church. It’s a unexplainable feeling that brings me inner peace.
I think that's just called a "sick beat".
Heilung draws on a legacy so much older than christianity, their music feels so much closer to human nature.

I went to the Pittsburgh show on Tuesday, it was fantastic, the theatricality of it all is just so good at creating the atmosphere they want. They're the only band so far that my wife and I agree on - we're usually neutral to each other's tastes, she's more metal and I'm more indie stuff, so they have her vibe and my weirdness while also bringing in the historical element and it's just such a perfect combination of all of it.
It's hard to qualify modern interpretations of "pre-history" as accurate. In our human history, music was entwined with spiritual rituals and practice, it wasn't an industrial pursuit of abstract profit. Years ago I understood that in the "first world" culture was largely manufactured to serve the larger mechanizations and that "real" music, the type of practice to reclaim the alienation was largely extinct. Heilung is the most important expression of reclaiming our humanity with that endeavor that we have now. Their rituals resonate through the rythms of our hearts and lungs and is intentionally done to reclaim a sense of what was left behind with as much integrity as possible. Years ago The Clash was the "most important band in the world". Today it''s Heilung. This time it think its real.
I love Heilung's music, it moves me emotionally like little else can. And I really, really appreciate them highlighting Norse and Germanic ancient history in a way that's not crypto-fascist.
Heilung are beautiful and terrifying, a look into the abyssal mirror of time long past and seeing eyes, not fully human, reflecting a question of their future in us.

Thanks for the video!! I've always seen Heilung as an immersive art that was meant to be personally experienced first. What they wear, or how they translate and integrate certain ancient stories into their music, will always (and should) be open to interpretation. Ancient stories are like clay, they are shaped and molded, ever-changing over the years by those who speak them. This inability to ever be 100% historically accurate in today's world is also what makes the past and the amazing world of mythology so magical and fun to learn about. Your guess is as good as mine and it's fun to discuss. At the end of the day, I think if you enjoy their music and respect that we are all brothers and sisters, then you will not only lose yourself in the music, you will find yourself as well.
I myself am a hobbyist electronic musician. However, I discovered Heilung a few years back and was truly mesmerized by their debut Castlefest live performance. Heilung continues to intrigue me as they release newer material. I understand they do their research on ancient Nordic tribal culture. I believe Heilung are as authentic as they possibly can be. I've studied paganism myself including attending a Wiccan Mabon ritual about 6 years ago. I grew up around tribal native American people in Arizona and spent time with Navajo and Hopi families. No doubt, Heilung are legit! Maria does seem to have insight to her people's culture and appears to be gifted with shamanic abilities. The band Euzen is fantastic as well, I love it all!
I appreciate that you mention the Native American people in Arizona. I too, grew up near Navajo Nation, and had Navajo and Apache school friends. I went to pow-wows as a kid. Seeing my first Heilung ritual in 2020 evoked similar, unexplained feelings I had attending a pow-wow. Only it impacted me a bit more. But I am not sure it's because I'm now an adult or if there is some mystical connections to my ancestry (I'm Scandie descent).

@@TheValkryie The power of a lot of this ancient music was in their use of sound frequencies to attain altered states of consciousness, strength and healing. "Singing" originally was to produce that state & not purely for entertainment - hence it had a sacred & mystical attribute from the beginning of time.
Our contemporary music (being largely synthesized) has become devoid of the reverberations of the actual instruments - often beyond the range of the human ear, but present none the less.
If you look at the effect of sound waves creating patterns in water or fine sand (there are RUclipss depicting that) you will clearly see the effect of discordant sound frequencies on physical matter - hence our physical bodies (being 70% compiled of water).
If you have ever chanted yrself (something known to be a sacred chant) you will understand its affect on you - or listened to an accomplished monk setting 'Buddha bowls' resonating at particular frequencies.
My wife is very very Native and it’s crazy how similar our cultures are in spirit. Heilung has been a huge factor in opening that discussion and seeing the similarity so clearly. It’s so innately human in the end, and speaks to our cores as human beings. I’d say that in a way their music has brought us and our two families all the more closer.

I was reluctant to comment but will do it anyway. I’m a member of the band and also an archaeologist. We are artists (with some of us having an academic background) influenced by different time periods. Reconstructionism does not work, especially not in arts. We do not (and cannot) claim to be historically authentic and it has never been the intention of Heilung. I mean, if one smart enough it will take you approximately 10 seconds to hear that Heilung is not aiming to sound authentic to say the Iron Age or the Viking Age.
It’s all about immersion and for this immersion we use archaeological sources where we can. Believe me, as an archaeologist I’d love to have everything as authentic as can be, but that is just not possible.
If you want to hear and see authenticity, you’re better off at a viking market. You might even run into us there as we are all very much into living history :)

Saw Heilung live on Sept 22, 2022. Best live show I’ve seen in 42 years. My favorite band, now. Catch them NOW. Before age takes them, as it takes us all.
I have Heilung to be almost an medicinal experience. I literally never feel the same when the music starts as I do when it ends. I prefer to really stop and immerse my thought into it and I’m off basically until the song is over.
I’m of Northern European descent so I guess it’s speaking to some part of me that’s remained dormant.

I'd have to say that, by their own admission, blending Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Viking Age in their music they are going for accuracy but only to a point. A pint they drive home with every song.
It's not a concert, it's a ritual. That's not just talk.
We aren't fans, we all are brothers and sisters. You feel that at their rituals. I met so many wonderful people I otherwise never would have when I saw them live. People I might not have gotten along with in another setting.
They changed my life. That's not rhetoric. That's not over the top nonsense. I am changed, and for the better.
I mean Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Viking Age are like 11.000 years of history. Or let's say we just take the late Neolithic, the last 500 years of it. Still over 6000 years. That's even more out there than some people in the future making an "accurate" historic 21th century band where you have a bunch of people with electric guitars, early medieval flutes and bronze-age drums while being dressed in British red coats of the 18th century with Spartan helmets, Roman gladia and parts of late medieval plate armor and an Elvis hairstyle and saying that's an accurate recreation.
But just to be clear, I still like Heilung for their music and I think some of the costumes are quite neat.
They've stated in interviews that some of the ancient writings they use for inspiration are incomplete and they fill in certain parts with their own interpretations, while trying to be as faithful to the source material as possible. I think they are amazing. I saw them live and you really can FEEL it. Best concert I've ever been to. Very spiritual experience.
Ásjá (ausyau) is such a beautiful song. It’s meaning itself means help, aid and protection. It’s tone reminds me of a lullaby. I can’t wait to hear more from them.
I visited the remains of the Shaman of Bad Durrenberg in April 2023. We spent five hours in the museum and I kept returning to her exhibit to connect with her and imagine her life almost 9,000 years ago. I was moved. When she lived, humans were close to nature and its rhythms.
Thanks for the informative video and details about Starr Carr - and that it was connected by Doggerland to the continent at the time of the Shaman of Bad Durrenberg! We cannot under-estimate the ability of people of those times moving and communicating with one another.

I think they have done a great job at taking inspiration from ancient history. They don't try to be a representation of what was, it's more a modern intepretation of what may or may not have been. Building simple instruments from things that were available at those ancient times, while combining it with modern technology. Making a connection to the past, grounding everyone who immerses themselves into it. I think that is what made them so popular, being a bit more grounded and connected in a world that spins faster by the day.
Their rituals are magnificent, their tallent phenomenal and their approach to historical occult stories and mythologies, not to mention Maria's angelic voice. I adore them. Thank You for the video 💖

The first time I wander down a RUclips hole and watched the live video of Krigsgaldr I was intrigued, and then Maria started singing and I was entranced.
Awesome group! I understand if they are representing a certain element that they should be spot on, but as you reported they are not claiming to be scientist or in that same thought historians. They are bringing their concept of their interpretation of said elements and they perform it well. I'll finally get to see them in concert soon... Fun fact: Oðinn is pronounced (oh then). The ð isn’t a d but looks similar hence why English speaking people pronounce it “Odin”.
Yes, I know that. Thank you. Have pronounced it both ways interchangeably in previous videos depending on the content. If expressly Norse mythology then have used the ‘th’ pronunciation. For more general content, have deferred to the more well-known version. My videos on Þórr and Angrboða are a case in point. One must also remember Óðinn was known in different pantheons by different names (Woden and Wotan) and the hard ‘d’ sound occurs in the proto-Indo-European ‘Wodenaz’.
An interesting video, thank you. Going to one of their gigs was the closest one ever come to a spiritual experience in 55 years of being an atheist. This band are life changing.

Does hyper accuracy really matter? Do you think everyone dressed exactly the same back then? Every article or adornment is there for a reason. Back then and now. They know why their garb is as it is. I don’t need to know. That’s how ceremony works. I’ve been blessed with having been in attendance at some extremely powerful ceremonies over the years. Heilung is perfectly at home in their company.
I attended in DC last tour, and Pittsburgh last week. I got the sense that there was a great deal more going on than I could fully appreciate. The crackle in the hall. The obvious difference in attitude between the majority of the attendants.
Sadly, a contemporary music venue of any sort can never fully suffice. These events are meant to occur around a fire open to the sky. So we could dance in circles under the moon, duh.
Their albums are encyclopedias for us to explore our own relationships with the deep past. All blood, all of it, is ancient.
AND, don’t think for one second that if Mesolithic shaman would have had access to laser light shows and digital sound manipulation technology, they wouldn’t have used them.
Seeing them tomorrow night is going to be a trip (literally!), been practising my Kargyraa for this!
I've been listening to them for years, this'll be an interesting doc
I just saw them live two days ago and they were amazing. Nothing will ever be entirely historically accurate, and it is important to remember that humans made things up a lot of the time as they went. What is “historically accurate” may mean one thing to another person. They do truly create an environment where you feel as if you are witnessing something that happened similarly in the past. We are creative beings and a lot of the rituals and rites that we created as ancient beings were creative and changed based on resources, needs, weather, etc. They are definitely a very, very talented group and are a gem of a musical talent and are extremely talented at creating atmosphere.
Heilung fills you with a sense of magic and spirituality, that is unlike anything.
Heilung in opinion does a good job of saying look here we are 2022 using microphones and laptops of course yes. But let's use as much natural material as possible. Even the recorded sounds they use are from nature. The only way you can be truly historically accurate you'd probably have to go camping with them probably lol, I wish I could! If you like heilung you should check out Maria and Chris's solo project called songlieker😍
It clearly isn't just a "gimmick" but even if it was, I think it wouldn't matter. The first thing I did after hearing these guys was look deeper into the historical context, and learned a lot of new things, they inspired me to. My father has been doing the same ever since I took him to see them live last week and has fallen in love with the music. If its a gimmick or not, either way, it accomplishes the same thing. A desire to learn more.
I feel immense gratitude to Heilung as they give a great hope for those of us presently involved in plant medicines stemming from the Shamanic traditions of the Amazon. It's as if they are part of this re-imagining and dreaming back into being the roots of who we really are. It is inspiring that many from the Scandinavian countries kept in touch with their heritage, while we here in the UK lost it completely, but we it helps us remember what has been lost as it resides deep within our collective soul.

I think the perfect historical accuracy is irrelevant, insofar as what they are creating is a sense of the grandeur and humanity of the past. Christopher has a point.

I have never been to any of their rituals, but watched many of their videos here and have their songs on a playlist I listen to often while driving or at other times. Some of their songs definitely reach deep into the soul and touch something that is not to be found anywhere else. they don't claim to be scientists. Maria's dress is shamanic seidr dress, and have seen something similar among the Sami shaman dress. It's very impressive and accurate.
I stumbled across this group years ago, I care not that the history may be inaccurate, I live in the US and our history is inaccurate and groups are trying to distort it even further. I listen because it woke something up in me, don't know where it originates and frankly don't care. I have friends who have listened and it made them in their words "uncomfortable". For me it's quite the opposite. Current day society analyzes subjects to the absurd and we accomplish nothing, no peace, no brotherhood, just the desire for immediate satisfaction. This music has calmed my mind, made me less reactionary, made me more happy. For me that's enough.
I don't care what they do, they speak directly to your soul. And that's what matters.
It's a walk threw time of our Ancestors and research and learning makes us understand their music more. That I think is their objective for us to go forward learn more about our roots.
My life has changed for the better with their music.

They certainly do manage to create that feeling of connection to the past. Their songs feel old.
I'd say "Is Heilung historically-accurate?" is perhaps the wrong question, but rather "Does Heilung attempt to create a sense of continuity with our Pagan past that has been lost through repeated contacts with monotheistic Abrahamic religions?" to which I would answer yes, resoundingly so. We have no way of knowing for sure what our world would be like if the oral traditions of our ancient Eurasian ancestors had survived more intact to the modern day, but Heilung, I feel, at least tries to fill in those blanks. Doesn't hurt that it's actually very, very pretty music.

There is a deep connection to anyone from Northern European ancestory to this folk/historic sound. It's like a old friend you have not seen got 30 years. As a 44 year old wife mother grandmother who is a deconstructing Christian I seek a closer understanding of my Germanic/Norse heritage.

Very interesting video, I have always wondered about this.
From where I’m sitting, there seem to be a few questions underpinning the debate around this group:
1. How much of their content comes from scientific data and lived experience vs how much is improvised or invented?
2. Is it really fair to say they’re preserving history if they’re essentially having to pick and choose what interpretations and elements to utilize and in what ways?
I would love to know the answer to #1 just out of curiosity, but I think that would require a long conversation with the writers and performers.
#2 is also an interesting question. From a purely empirical academic standpoint, the answer would probably be no. But empiricism has a finite application to cultural practices, because much of what consistories culture is difficult or impossible to quantify and formulate. It might be said that the fact that anyone is using these historical elements and applying them in the way they were intended for-whether that be creative leisure, cultural bonding, identity affirmation, etc-and finding some kind of meaning in them is authentic enough.
Regardless, their music sounds awesome, and it exciting to know that their work is based on history and on the continued lived experiences of a historical group. Great video, thank you.

What we try to 'measure' with our physically anchored curious human minds within the idea of science, is not what is important with what Heilung is accomplishing, it is the intent of what they do, for when we look back into the past, we look at our deeper view of humanities mirror. To not be afraid of our past, but instead, confront it, accept it, learn from it. To understand who you are, you also must know where you are from. The power of intent within human emotion, cast into rhythm and rhyme, song and dance, is something Heilung masters and conveys with each and every instrument and voice carefully and lovingly channeled. The name they hold proudly speaks for itself, "Heilung" or Cure. The family that is the human race, needs a cure, it needs healing. Thank you Heilung for your lessons and your love.

The "Heilung" is not a band it is a phenomenon, a spiral upward, a manifestation, the ancestors speak through the members trying to reach the rest of us, that we may be healed. This is not necessarily a palatable process for many of us, other's, such as myself bite it off in big chunks and chew it up with what few teeth I have left, and wipe my chin with the back of my hand like a cat! As a swede myself, yes a lot of people still believe in the old ''folk tales''. And most of these folk tales are just older pagan practices that had to change because of the oppression from Christians. am happy to see Scandinavia return to old tradition and tribalism
Pre - Roman European history is mostly guesswork. As with many cultures that had no written language - and thus no written history, any attempt to claim historical accuracy is ridiculous. We know Heilung isn't historically accurate. That isn't their goal and they make that clear right from the start.
Visual learners like myself can gain a much better appreciation for, and interest in, history after watching their performances.
Lessons from the past for a world yet to be. I sense the awakening from the deception which has plagued humans over the past two thousand years.

To amplify is only broadcast that which is available, it doesn't mean complete or even accurate. There is no arguing the fact that they draw on that energy that has brought us together since ancient times. That can only be passed down and can not be documented, that is the history that lives.
