Lots of subtractive arrangement techniques, I so want to speak to their producer and am wondering what DAW they use, I use Ableton Live 11, BitWig Studio 4 and Reaper
Did you make the Red Rocks shows?!
This comment is giving me flashbacks as a DnD player.
Yeah....sooo primal before the toothpaste commercial...com on
Can you do "FAUN - Walpurgisnacht" next? Such a beautifully written and sang song. :)
This song is based on the Norwegian Runic Poem, which, as in the Icelandic Runic Poem, names all the runes of the young futhark accompanied by a stanza alluding to the name of each of the runes. There is also a third Runic Poem: the Anglo-Saxon. Runic poems are believed to have served as a mnemonic tool for remembering the names of the runes and their order in the alphabet. It is an important compilation of popular culture of the time, comparable to old English sayings, Gnomonic poetry, and Old Norse poetry. The Norwegian runic poem, written in Old Norse, has been preserved in a 17th century copy of a destroyed 13th century manuscript. This poem appears in skaldic meter. And it has the following structure: The first line of each stanza is a phrase of the following type: "name of the rune + copula + X", where X is an attribute to the name of the rune, followed by a second rhymed line that provides some information somehow related to the previous sentence.
In this poem and in Icelandic, all the runes of the young futhark appear in the same order. The names of the 16 runes and their order is as follows:
Fé, Úr, Þurs, Óss, Ræið, Kaun, Hagall, Nauðr, Ís, Ár, Sól, Týr, Bjarkan, Maðr, Lögr, Ýr
ᚠ - Wealth causes dispute between relatives. The wolf inhabits the forest.
ᚢ - All dross comes from bad iron. Reindeer often run on frozen snow.
ᚦ - A troll causes disease in women. Few men find joy in misfortune.
ᚬ - The end of the river is the path for most trips. And a scabbard is the fate of swords.
ᚱ - It is said that riding is the worst for the horse. Reginn forged the best sword.
ᚴ - The ulcer is a curse for children. Death makes a man pale.
ᚼ - Hail is the coldest grain. Kristr created the world of yesteryear.
ᚾ - Anguish leaves little choice. A naked man is chilled by frost.
ᛁ - Ice we call a wide bridge. A blind man needs guidance.
ᛅ - Abundance is a blessing to men. I say that Fróde was generous.
ᛋ - The sun is the light of the world. I bow down to all that is sacred.
ᛏ - Tyr is a one-handed god. Often a blacksmith must forge.
ᛒ - A birch has the greenest leaves. Loki forged times of deception.
ᛘ - Man is the product of dust. Strong is the claw of a hawk.
ᛚ - A waterfall is a river that falls from the mountain. All treasures are gold.
ᛦ - Yew is the greenest of winter trees. It tends to crunch when burned.
Male voice lyrics are names and words from German, Danish, Norwegian, latin and Finnish (still unconfirmed).
Uunia runus sigurd.
Fähig ani regina gunda.
So you're telling me this is just an epic, Nordic version of the ABC song?
@@killerabbit003 I couldn't be sure, because even archaeologists don't agree. There are few well-preserved written traces that can be found from the bronze and iron ages of northern Europe. As you say, it could well be a way of remembering the runic alphabet for the people of the time. A hug.
Amazing thanks!
The first line gives the meaning/function of the rune and the second line gives its shape.
@@Nidels Well I dont disagree with anything your saying or your good message.
Just want to point out that "the people of the time" didnt know the runic alphabet.
To read runes, to speak their message was a devine thing. a link between the realms of gods and men.
Only very few could do this. and those that could where held in a status above kings in some ways. ( not that there was many kings in the early age of rune writing, but still )
But nobles, earls, and such didnt learn to write runes, they where not used the same way we use the alphabet. the people didnt learn.
A few sacred people had it as part of the sacret place they had in the world of the people.
Elizabeth, I hope you get to read this. I am a newcomer to Heilung. I have not been well lately with some cardiac problems. I really thought that this Wednesday I was going to have to go to the hospital. My nephrologist who oversees my meds changed a few things and advised me to relax and try to sleep. A good friend had told me about Heilung, specifically Norupo. This song immediately grabbed me. So I downloaded the album that it came from, took some more meds, put my headphones on and laid down to listen. I think I was asleep within 20 minutes. I woke up about six hours later and felt relaxed and at peace. My blood pressure had dropped back to normal. And it has stayed that way thank God. As a drummer, I know that music can lift us up and bring us peace. And this band really lived up to their name, "Healing." Many thanks for your wonderful review of an absolutely other-worldly song.
So the poses they are striking are called stadh and they physically represent the runes they are singing about. Stadh forms coupled with galdr (spoken chants invoking rune sounds) are elements of rune magic.
very informative!
Love this!
Thanks man!
Thank you so much
Stav?
All the people in Heilung are amazing. I had the chance to meet them 2 yrs ago with my family in Chicago and my daughter was just talking to them like they were family friends. It was a pure and beautiful moment.
Yes, they are amazing. I got to meet them in San Francisco. Very down to earth and so amazing.
Omg I'm so jealous. I'd probably faint if I ever met them and not even be able to talk 😆.
Heilung is what happens when your druids and barbarians multiclass into bards.
Lol - so true Pale Horse!
Bardbarian for sure!
More like druids, shamen and barbarians being pointed at the same target.
ROFL
Yes! So true.
I discovered them about 2 years ago and my first reaction was in my blood and soul, like it recognized something ancient that my mind forgot.
Norwegian?
Danish
Me too!
There are a lot of people that feel that. Mostly with some kind of Scandinavian/Germanic/Slavic roots. The Blood sings. The Blood calls to Blood.
We are all Human. We should honor these connections which bind us.
The combination of Maria’s voice and the Nordic language is an incredibly beautiful sound.
If they haven’t been suggested to you before, I think you’d love Eluveitie. They do Celtic folk metal, and sing in Celtic much of the time!
I'll be looking them up now, tyvm.
They ARE on my list!
@@TheCharismaticVoice YESSSS! Thousandfold is AMAZING!!!
@@TheCharismaticVoice Cellar Darling, too! Some former Eluveitie members who struck out to make something new. They are also very good.
And while we're on music that uses a hurdy gurdy, check out Patty Gurdy sometime.
Inis mona or thousandfold!!
Just have to second all the Lisa Gerrard recommendations. You’ve picked so many astonishing singers, Maria Frantz being my current favorite, so I hope to see Lisa Gerrard here sometime. Her voice is timelessly beautiful and transcendent. Thank you!
I’ve been trying to suggest it as well!! So nice to see I’m not alone!
@@diekje8728 I keep trying to imagine just the right footage. Like, I can imagine Sanvean from years ago, or a more recent performance, but trying to find the right audio quality is daunting.
@@JamesPomeroy so true! Or sometimes there’s footage with very bad lighting or loud audiences. There are so many songs I wish she would do. But I always come back to the 2012 Montreal footage. It’s one of the best there is
Lisa Gerrard - Sacrifice
@@itsDravidian also amazing, however with that song we exclude Brendan Perry who has an utterly beautiful voice himself as well
I like how you acknowledge Kai here. While I myself had trouble with his singing style at first, and he doesn't even seem to register with many others in the shadow of Maria's incredible singing, I do believe that he really is the motor of this group. He isn't seen all that much, and it is the car's body most people would judge them by (i.e. Maria and Christopher, the primary melodic voices), he really seems to be the force that ultimately moves the thing and gives it the power it has. It is just SUCH a fortunate combination all over!
Probably my favorite song from them. Listening to Heilung for me gives chills and emotions that other music just doesn’t do.
I commented before about how I believe sometimes certain sounds in music really connect to us as if it were embedded in our DNA. For example, my family history is Germanic. Sounds and music from those times of old seem to resonate with us more than let’s say, modern music sounds. Just as people descended from other cultures tend to resonate with sounds and music from those ancient cultures more. This has led me to believe that certain sounds and music is embedded in our DNA and that’s why it resonates with us so much.
I get goosebumps the second Maria starts singing..😄
I LOVE Heilung and Maria Franz, and I love your reactions and your wonderful nerdiness! 😁Greetings from a proud norwegian viking! 😘
Heilung make me weep, every single time. I sit entranced and tears run down my face, and I just can't help it. The music is so powerful and beautiful, it truly brings you back thousands of years in time. I am so grateful they are out there, and can't wait to get to see them live!
If you haven't already, you should listen to one of their new songs, Anoana.. it's beyond words... brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it.
See I love seeing Elizabeth geeking out with all this musical terminology I don’t understand, and then she brings it down to my level with, “that is SUCH a cool sound!”
I was lucky enough to see them last year before covid got super crazy. It was a pleasure seeing Heilung in person in Chicago with some friends of mine.
I had such a good time there and was singing along. In fact, I also made a woman who was next to me on the right side, along with her two sons' day with me doing this. They heard me singing along and made them smile. I want to relive this feeling again so bad.
You should listen to Skald.
From their website: "SKÁLD embraces the ancestral spirit of the ancient skalds who chanted of the legends surrounding the peoples of the North and their gods.
Through their music, SKÁLD take inspiration from the poetry of the ancient skalds who sang and told stories of the Vikings and their gods. Their music is characterized by singing in Old Norse and... "
Best way to end a crappy, challenging week!! Double Heilung experience!! Can't wait to see them live, as well. Great job, as always, with your breakdown and analysis of their music. There are so many textures, sounds, rhythms, and colors in their music that it makes listening to them an unparalleled experience. Thanks you!!
If you have time, watch the live version of this song because Maria makes the runes as she is singing about them. Like Fehu she makes the figure that represents that rune with her body (sorry if my English is bad, it is not my first language)
This music is so satisfying. Thanks, Elizabeth for expanding my music horizon with yet another band!
Hi Elizabeth, I Loved this performance and your reaction! The music was very calm and relaxing and is perfect for my surgery today. Of course, "Heilung," is (German for Healing), and their name could not be more appropriate! I will definitely watch this again when I return home! Thank You, Elizabeth! May You and Kirk have a Wonderful and Peaceful Day/Weekend!!! ❤ ❤ ❤
Recover well Kirby S!
You as well, Kirby! I hope your appointment went well, and hope to talk soon!
@@rebeccavandam2834 Thank You, Rebecca! ❤
@@TheCharismaticVoice Thank You, Elizabeth. Check-in/procedure for my Cerebral Angiogram was from 1230-1800 hrs. and I returned home at 1930 Hrs. All is good but I'll be sore for a few days! ❤
Seeing this group at Red Rock is absolutely at the top of my bucket list.
In October i believe
YAAAASSSSS!!! I LOVE Heilung, and I love watching your reactions and analyses!
Singing on the constenants isn't something I have reflected on before, but now when I think about it it's just something that happens a lot in Scandinavia 🤔 this is why I like your commentary!
It’s incredible that you can make something I’ve seen and heard countless times in the year it’s been around seem brand new ! As always wonderful work ! Thank you so much for doing these . None better anywhere!
I will be in Red Rock too! Saw them in Denver in 2020, right before COVID, and oh my god. They are fantastic in person.
I wanted to run thru a brick wall after seeing them live at the Ogden theater
Haven't finished watching this video yet but I LOVE watching your reactions to Heilung. You have such a deep appreciation for music and you pick up on so many artistic choices they use!
I purchased tickets to see Heilung at Red Rocks while watching this. :D
I’m so jealous you get to go to the Red Rocks show. I got to see them in January 2020 and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. It felt less like seeing a concert and more like participating in some kind of healing ceremony or ritual. You’re in for such a treat!
Awesome reaction! While there is definitely some layering going on, it's always important to remember that because throat singing by default creates multiple pitches simultaneously you can cover alot of sonic space by yourself and sometimes sound like you've layered separate sounds when they're actually being made by one person concurrently.
I'm stoked. Have been waiting.
Beautiful. How great it is to hear some different , primitive music once in a while. Thank you for reacting to music from other countries and cultures.
Thank you very much for your reactions! With you together I could feel the music again like it was my first time, even after a thousand hours of my listening to Heilung 🙏🏽
Just watched this video last night and I bought my tickets for Red Rock today!!! Absolutely can't wait and so excited!! Have you to thank for the heads up on the upcoming concert, had no idea but I certainly can't miss it now. ❤️❤️
I just love watching you geek out! (I'm geeking out too.)
I may have found someone that loves music more than me! I love how giddy you get when something sounds really special.
This song is beautiful and it's so great to see you enjoy it!
I am so glad to see reviews on this, I found this band randomly and this is one of my favorites of Heilung. So cool, primal, energetic and amazing stuff.
I 100% believe that the feelings we get listening to this is our souls remembering what it was like to worship nature.
Also, I'm a straight woman but I am desperately in love with Maria. She's amazing
Your premiers are always at 4 PM my local time. The same time I get off work. So I love fridays, since I get off half an hour earlier and can make it :D
Hi Elizabeth!
Got a tip for you. Do a reaction to Björn Skifs Håll mitt Hjärta. It's a Swedish song by the sinfer to the song Hooked on a Feeling. Text written by him an d the music by Peter Hallström (a swedish musican, songwriter and more) but due to some complications he couldn't record it after it was made. So an english version was made called "Same Ol' Story" sung by André de Lang. Björn later made it in the original swedish version, and it made it into the swedish charts for 142 consecutive weeks (most of them as #1). The song is absolutely one of the most beautiful songs ever made, and Björns voice is amazing. If you deside to make a reaction video I suggest searching you tube for
"Björn Skifs - Håll mitt hjärta (Hold my heart)" (unsure what you thoughts about posting url are so) it has the lyrics translated in english too. If you want a live version without the english lyrics search for "Björn Skifs - Håll mitt hjärta (Live @ Tack för musiken)". Hope you atleast check it out even if you don't do a reaction.
First song of their last album I've heard... and a reason I've directly ordered it. This is just a great Heilung album.
Do traust next with live video from 2020 concerts. It’s an amazing ritual and music
I love your energy! Your excitement and passion shines through your speaking and facial expressions. Found you through your reaction to Eivør's Trøllabundin and now I'm hooked on your channel!
Heilung in german means healing. This music heals your soul.
Just bought tickets! Can't wait!
Love Heilung, and your hair! It's gorgeous!
Wasn’t familiar of this band until last night! Thanks you You-tube for your recommendations! I listened to the song on repeat when I first found it. I wake up today and lo I have The lovely Charismatic Voice Analysis Just waiting to be watched… Day MADE! As usual I love your videos, and I cry at the epiphanies and ahas, it’s the best! You rock!
This group and The HU should do a duet like thing. I bet hearing them together in a together in primal orchestra would be huge!
East and North together? The west would NOT be prepared, and I'm excited at the thought.
Live in Colorado, didn't know until I watched this video that they were coming. Just bought tickets
Chris Stapleton - Fire Away! He has the most amazing voices and the video is great.
I haven’t bought tickets yet, but I made sure to schedule off the week of the concert.. hopefully, I get to go! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Have tickets to the Red Rocks show! Cannot wait. Would love to meet you in person.
Very cool observations! Maria and company are awesome. You point out the best in the best.
Portishead - All Mine is my request.

Any Portishead song would ngl.
If you do roads you have to check out the My Dying Bride cover
I’m going to Red Rocks to see them in October! I’m so excited, and I’m glad you get to go too!
My favourite of their songs )
I Love it so much that You Love this Band so much, I believe for a of people they are way out of their comfortzone
Heilung are Special.
I have a Ticket for this year in Germany, december and I so Hope that Corona is tamed this time... I do so need to fall in Trance to this Performance/ Ritual.
This song always gives me goosebumps, so amazing @TheCharismaticVoice
I saw them in Denver last year, and it was unlike any other "concert" I'd ever been to. I look forward to seeing them again at Red Rocks.
Just bought my wife and I tickets to this show at Red Rocks! Thank you for the heads up. Should be amazing there!
I'd love to know what you think of the vocals of Tanya Tagaq. She's an Inuit throat singer, which is a very different style of throat signing than The Hu or Heilung. Her music is very intense, emotional, abrasive, and full of amazing vocal acrobatics.
Here are some suggestions.

And a longer one: ruclips.net/video/xNYTA6SV6tM/видео.html
I'll be there too!! Already have my tix 🤩😍
great analysis as always! i just like the way you talk and the way you show your knowledge, it's kinda relaxing and very informative. i didn't know heilung and i'll definitely look up for more. also, since you're always asking for recommendations, i think you would love to hear and react to Shaman - Fairy Tail (Ritualive performance, especifically), sung by André Mattos, one of the best brazillian singers that has ever existed (the song is in english, tho). i think you'd be surprised!
All right, now there is this beautiful person with such passion, wonder and intellect listening to all kinds of (mostly) metal music. Well, fuck yeah!
In my brass instrument playing days, peddle tones were a reference to the lowest note the instrument could perform. Is it different meaning for choral?
I love when you react to Heilung. Especially now that you're really familiar with them. I loved your interview with Maria, BTW. They're one of those groups that could just make the world better if more people listened to them.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to raid a few monasteries in that weird monotheistic land on my way back from trading with the Francias.
I absolutely love this song and video! I'm hoping to get tickets to go see them live.
I definitely have been wanting to see them at Red Rock. Only an 8 hour drive for me. I'll have to be there!
Shivering down my spine listening to this. Proud to be a Norwegian listening to this.
I DIDNT KNOW THEY WERE COMING TO COLORADO, I have no excuses now, I must go see them
How many of the people at that show will be high as f...? I'm not criticizing them, as I could imagine that being a super intense experience.
Pam, if Jim knew you had this much musical knowledge and expertise, he would have proposed AND convinced Michael to give you a raise, all in the first season.
Was looking for a comment like that
The place in the video is situated in France (Britanny region) deep in the legendary forest of Broceliande where was born the Arthurian myth and the Excalibur sword-legend (Knights of the round table). It is called "les menhirs de MONTENEUF".
The wife and I are going to see them at the Red Rock as well. Love your reaction videos by the way. and Heilung is Awesome!!!!
i just saw this vid months ago and its very strange and yet cool at the same time. cool song.
Thank You!
I'll be at the RR concert as well! Cant wait!
I will be at the Red Ricks show! We need to all meet up! That would be so cool!
Awesome! We're doing a patron thing the day before, but might do a regular meetup at the show!
@@TheCharismaticVoice I would be interested doing the patron thing, do you have info on your patron page?
I’m seeing them in Colorado this year too!!
The postures they are making during the song are the runes. They are actually performing the rune poem through a "dance." That's why the posturing and the antlers, etc. Also, they seem to represent 3 elements of old Norse religion and world-view. The Warrior, the Wood Sprite, and the Shaman.
I was born in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein and live there. In the Middle Ages my homeland was Danish, now German. Because of this, I have a loving connection with my northern neighbors. P.S. It doesn't matter where you were born. Your character makes the man.
We are ALL Barbarians. Ask the ancient Romans.Peace and Love. ;)
This guy is amazing
I'll see you at the concert. I got my tickets last year, before Covid delayed it.
Bought my tickets to the red rocks show when they announced the date over a year ago now I think. Back when it was still scheduled for 2020.

I think it'd be interesting to do an analysis of The HU and their Mongolian throat singing

Just discovered it on RUclips. Amazin.
It's so much fun to see someone who knows what they're doing having fun. And Heilung's always great.
So thank you for that. Been enjoying your videos (well, those I have interest in...)
You say post below, so: have you been suggested Sleep Token yet? I think "Calcutta" from them would be a beautiful watch. Those vocals...

If you haven’t yet (not that I could find anyway) I would love to see your analysis of Eivor and her song Trollabundin!
Heilung is coming to Red Rocks?!?! Hopefully we’ll be open for the show! I want to be there
Did you make it to Red Rocks last week? What an awesome experience!
Sweeeet, had no idea Heilung will be playing at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, you just made my day. Pairing Red Rocks Amphitheater with this band, believe me when I say it will be an experience. 15 minute drive for me,..... count me in 😁
I discovered them too late to catch them in America this time. Next time though. I gotta see them live.
I had to come back to this one and formally request you do a review of Heilung's "Anoana" which just released June 2022. I'm absolutely haunted by the vid, and would love to hear your take on it too.
I came here to say the same thing. Anoana is beyond amazing.
Cant wait to see them in colorado!
Wow. This is so different. I love it. It's visceral and as you said, primal. I've really got to learn more about this. Is there a name for this genre of music?
