Elizabeth, I get so emotional watching your videos, they get me through some tough times. I’ve seen your commentary on Wardruna and Heilung, but I have to recommend The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra by Anna Von Hausswolf, her vocals are haunting and I know you’d be blown away.
Old Norse, like all ancient Germanic cultures, was strongly influenced by ancestral shamanic practices and beliefs. Wardruna gives an expert interpretation of the language, spirituality, and creed of the Old Norse
I am native american, and when the 6:39 mark hits, where the song branches between the men's voice and the higher female's voice, it reminds me of out songs. Ancient, tribal music across the world is both beautiful and powerful. There is a purpose to each song and how it is sung. There is a depth of identity and our roots that are lost in music today.
We have Ásatrú that is Asceticism here in Iceland, from the Vikings but lots of the Culture and traditions are lost due to the Sacred Christian Holier Than Thou attitude.
I’m coming across this 3 years later, but by now I’m hoping you’ve discovered Heilung. Another Norse project with a reverence for First Nations people like us.
I am German, with extensive roots in the Viking Empire (Denmark). This music touches my innermost being... it points me to the ancient traces of my people... They made us what we are today! My deep respect goes to the ancient inhabitants of America!
When I discovered this song for the first time I got full body shivers and started crying. It was as if I subconsciously remembered a different life I missed dearly.
This is Wardruna's best known song and one of it's best performances with Aurora. I was lucky enough to witness one of the first times it was sung in 2012 during Castlest in the Netherlands. It was during the evening with crows flying of a great oaktree under a full moon with the starting of the drum. It was mesmerizing and sacral. A lot of wassailing afterwards. Skål to Wardruna!
That is so cool! I wish I would have been there. It pleases me to know you were able to experience such profound music, lyrics, and just an excellent experience all the way around. Wardruna and Aurora have a great duo voice.
That show at castlefest was my first introduction to Wardruna, I didn't know them yet and was very skeptical. The whole show I just stood there in awe and afterward, it felt like I had really witnessed something intensely profound and sacred, for lack of better words. Somehow Wardruna's shows feel like one big ceremony....
She has a very child-like vibe to her, not necessarily in the sense that she’s immature, more innocent and chaotic I guess? And that works into her singing and stage presence
@@evilemuempire9550 She is the epitome of Mercurial, which is that child-like, prepubescent essence. See: all personal planets in Gemini, Mercury's home with Mercury in great power and dignity. Pretty funny when these things run clear like that!
Many metal heads love Aurora. Everyone who stops for a second and listens to her are taken on a journey. Her ability to breath every song she sings - to become the story... She is so healing to listen to. And Wardruna... oh my. I had the pleasure to hear them live before the pandemic broke and for the whole concert I cried and cried. I've never done that. But it was different kind of crying, it felt easy, like the music was purifying past unwanted emotions. It touches so deeply. The message, the drumming, the lyrics even when you can't understand them, it all feels so profound.
I became a fan of her in like five seconds just from watching an interview, had no idea who she was, just a random youtube recommendation. She reminded me of Björk.
I've been a metalhead for 20 years (two thirds of my life) and I LOVE Aurora. Her voice is simply amazing and I find her music aids in relaxing. She's also gorgeous and a unique spirit.
This song, especially this version....I can’t listen to without tearing up when einar hits that high belt....his voice (even though it’s not that high) has such an otherworldly timbre, it blows my mind
Yes , I describe that sensation as a « Cosmic Orgasm of the eardrums » personally…🤣😂 not many voices can bring me there but when it comes to Einar’s voice , I think it’s accurate enough !
@@SakiBlablabla There is exactly four people I can think of that give me that feeling. Einar Selvik, Aurora, as well as Maria Franz and Kai Faust from Heilung.
I'm a brown Asian metalhead drummer guy. This song, especially with Aurora is something else. Its so strange but everytime I listen to it, I just tear up. It's hauntingly beautiful. Aurora is definitely some elvish mystical being. She just adds so much to this song I almost wish she and Wardruna just keep working together. I can absolutely listen to thousands of songs like this. It's so bloody good. At this point, I've listened to it thousands of times and that's not counting the times I just put it on replay for 2 hours as I fall asleep. And your reaction is the best. You really let the song engulf you. BTW it only gets better when you read the lyrics. Makes me wanna worship Odin. Also very strange coz I'm an ex Muslim atheist. Lol.
@@sunte91indeed. I'm still in awe of this performance. It's an experience watching it from a tiny smartphone screen. Imagine being there live.... I'd probably just melt into the earth.
The last part he performs goes something like this: Cattle die, kinsmen die You yourself will also die But the word about you will never die If you win a good reputation Cattle die, kinsmen die You yourself will also die I know one thing that never dies The reputation of those who died
HELVEGEN translation. Who shall sing me, Into deathsleep sling me, When I on the path to Hel go, And this track I tread Is cold, so cold, so cold. I sought the songs, I sent the songs. Cattle die, Friends die, So, too, must you die. I know one, That never dies; Judgement of a dead man's life."[3]
Yes it’s true you can kill a man but you can never kill his reputation and his honour and I think to the Vikings honour had an almost supernatural meaning which would bestow luck and good fortitude to those in the dead mans family when they fought in battles.
Third verse untranslated sounds like a reference to the Norne - who weave the threads of each life into a tapestry, who decides when to...cut each thread. the translation - while good - lost that part.
Being Norwegian knowing the lyrics and almost feeling a kind of nationalistic feel towards the Viking ages, this feeling of mythical power and longing back to these times are even more strengthened.
I’m from Gotland, the island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. And I got spooked by the familiar words that occasionally sounded spot on how the elder generation talked. I miss my grandmother and grandfather so much. I miss the ocean storms and the stones shaped like gigantic pillars
I figured it was Norwegian but I wasn’t sure if if it was Old Norse. I speak English but also learnt old English (before French changed English) so I was surprised that I could understand about 60% of what they were singing.
@@GeographRick most of the song is actually in (a somewhat archaic, true, but still not old norse) "nynorsk". Nynorsk is one of two written forms used in Norway today. Nynorsk is used by approx 10% of the population and is somewhat closer to the original Norwegian than the other written form ("bokmål") used but approx 90 %, which is essentially a 'norwegianized' form of danish. The last part - the verses on the end after the drumplayer has finished is indeed Old Norse. It is some stanzas (verses, no 76+77) from the "Håvamål" collection of poetry, probably created approx 700-900 AD most likely in Norway, and written down first in Iceland late 12th century. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A1vam%C3%A1l
I want this song to be played at my funeral. "The way to Hel", the Norse goddess of the underworld who welcomes all souls that have not been fallen in battle. I now love Wardruna for many years, especially their singer Einar Selvik. Their music and especially Einar's voice are pure magic. Listen to "Lyfjaberg" (Healing mountain) or "Völuspa", they are - next to Helvegen - my favourite songs of this band.
I'll never forget the first time I listened to this song. My life changed forever. Einar is truly my favorite singer. I love nothing more than to listen to him singing along with his lyre or drum and nothing else in the background. No band, no additional instruments. He's a genius. Also, it's very common for him to drum on a piece of wood and incorporate natural sounds into the music.
Your excitement to all parts of the music brings me joy. I was thinking about how it seems like Aurora was trying really hard to restrain her hand movements by grabbing the microphone a lot. She is so so expressive when she performs. I would really enjoy seeing you listen more more Aurora. It would be fun to watch someone fall in love with her as so many have.
This is my favorite version of Helvegen - Einar and Aurora are so good together. You should try out Einars solo performances, they are just so wonderful - much more intimate, it's mostly him and his lyra and nyckelharpa (and he is so passionate about his music and instruments)
There’s a beautiful thing to be found within traditional music that I feel a lot of people miss. It is beautiful and the sounds create a story and emotions you never knew you had. But when it comes to music like this, it’s the POWER that strikes me. Music like this reminds us of who we once were and gives us almost a sense of mourning for what humanity has lost these days. So much love for this band and Aurora and for what they bring back into this world
This Song speaks to you in that way because we all were Nordic long, old time ago. It is because of the old words and legends of ancient gods. It is pure nature that comes to your heart and your Soul rembers the old path, old spirit of life.
"Invitation" was an excellent way to put that...And, I dig the look of "first discovery" on your face. There's no "lie" in it. Reminds me of something that my late grandfather said to me forty-five years ago when I was just a boy...and, it's mainly in regards to music. "Listen to everything that you can get your hands on. REALLY listen, and you'll surprise yourself with what you end up liking. For discovery only happens once, so kick back and enjoy." And, I can say that without a doubt, that those words have rung true my entire life. RIP "Dad" (that's what all of us kids in the family called him. He was the patriarch for all of us). He passed not long before Christmas in '97, and he's sorely missed.
I just got home from watching Wardruna live in Glasgow, words can't do justice to how good they are live from the first song to the last you could feel the music flowing thru your body! They are all amazing singers, if you ever get the chance to see them perform you got to go!.
@pnicolai basically that he is intrigued by anciend norke music and he is fascinated by sounds of nature. He use to go to the forest and record different sounds. (How a south facing birch sounds differently than a north faced one... the waterfalls, thunders, etc) you would provably notice in wardruna's records....
I've been fortunate to catch their conert in heidelberg, germany, a few years ago. Been to many cool and good concerts that were fun and good performances. But i dont remeber another concert besides wardruna that left a deep impression, that still lasted a couple of days after.
Where Einar starts to speak towards the end of the song he is reciting part of a poem dated to 700-900 AD named Håvamål. It is part of a group of poems called the Older Edda. Håva, or Hávi, is another name for Odin, and the poem is thought to be his speech.
this is why we play and listen to world music from all lands and cultures........remember our ancestors....the song is about the journey to the Viking afterlife ( "Hel" - NOT the Christian Hell" ) and recalling all the people and events that preceded our lives........all things must die, but our reputations live on.......I think the horn is an ancient "Lur"........"too much amazing" is right on !
Christian hell comes from the name Hel. The name "HELL" was first prounounced in KJV in the 17th century version of the bible. Demonitizing the deathrealm of the aeisir believers, Helheim. But it ain't the first time. In later texts Hades was mentioned and demonitized, deathrealm of the ancient greek beliefs. Another example are the demon they call Leviathan. In old jewish mythology it was a sea serpent that protected the ocean, but not only that. The seamen that praised the sea serpent was protected from bad accidents when they where at sea. Like greek's mythological Poseidon. So yeah, christians took all gods that was praised for protection and demonotized them in the bible. "Yeah, but you got hell in earlier texts as well." christians yells. Yeah, but not the word HELL itself, it was Hades, Sheol, Gehenna, Tartarus. But no hell in it self. Gehenna was not a place underneath earth do. It was a valley where crippled people, unwanted children and sick people was burned alive. A place on earth that Jesus saw. But he didn't call it hell. Gehenna itself means wall of fire. The real place that was later called Gehenna are Hinnomvalley.
Yes! Love the fact that you took a look at Wardruna and that you enjoyed it so much! I‘d STRONGLY recommend that you listen to „Wardruna - Lyfjaberg (Healing Mountain), it shows some more aspects to Einar‘s voice (and yes, the lead singer with the braided beard is him) and it’s certainly one of my favorites! Much love from Germany, have a wonderful day ❤️
This song cracks my heart open.... It raises the spirit. I don't even know the words, and I don't even need or want to. The vibrations alone are more than enough.
The drummer is playing stretched leather on wood frames (open bottoms), with what my ear says is a bone/wood tambourine on a hi-hat pedal. There's another percussionist behind him keeping those 32nd subdivisions on...something -akin to a maraca? He takes that beat over at 11:35 on the traditional drums; having a vocal drop-off to change focus on the drums is a really interesting musical decision you don't see often. It's a really really well constructed piece, all-round. Otherwise, mostly I'm chuffed to see you react to this the same way I seem to, emotionally.
When your history has been erased, anything resembling it becomes profound. Sometimes, even while enjoying these pieces, I get sad. Like something's missing.
@@diofelles Unfortunately it was erased in many ways - yes, to a certain extent it was never written down (runes were not used in manuscripts, as the Germanic tradition was largely oral), but in the forcible conversion of the Germanic Heathens to Christianity that really took off in 1100 A.D., a lot of the mythology and culture was lost or twisted. (I’m Reconstructionist Heathen - trying to follow the footsteps of my ancestors as best I can, and researching what was originally part of the religion and what was put there later as a result of Christian influence).
@@syrenseas Christianity was only partly brought by force. At the battle of Stiklestad, Christians and heathens were in both camps. Btw, do you think the Norse gods were introduced totally peacefully? Also, they are more Germanic than Norse, Anglo-Saxons and original Saxons worshipped them too.
@@Henrik46 Yes, you’re right - I have amended my reply to say “Germanic” instead of “Norse”. No, they probably weren’t introduced peacefully, this is true. But you can’t say “these people also did bad things!” to excuse the bad things you’re doing. That would be like saying “the Jews lost us the war and are responsible for us being poor!” while putting them in gas chambers...wasn’t there someone else that did that at one point? It took less than a century for the Scandinavian countries to be fully converted through the Christianisation of the kings, who then forced it on the rest of their countries. I would like to point you particularly toward Olaf I of Norway, who tortured and killed pagans and destroyed their temples (as an example - there were more peaceful, insidious conversions as well). I am a reconstructionist Heathen, which means that I take everything Snorri has written with a grain of salt. Stiklarstadir has been uncovered as a way for the Church to make the legend of Saint Olaf more impressive (he must have fallen in a battle for Christianity), rather than what actually happened. It is more likely, according to historical sources, that Olaf’s party consisted of his central guard and a few people who joined along the way. The other side were UNTRAINED FARMERS. Stiklarstadir is far less about the epic battle Snorri’s saga - it is an excellent study into the propaganda methods of the time surrounding those who have been given sainthood. There is also no evidence of any battleground at Stiklestad, only a couple of residences.
Please! Please! Please! React to Aurora, Through the Eyes of a Child - stripped down version. Live! All harmonies. All acapella. Definitely, a can't miss it situation! She is so captivating, fascinating to watch during her live performances!
I lost track of how many times I have listened to this performance. In the last part he switches from song to recital, and he is delivering two stanzas of poetry that many Norwegians will have memorized. It says what remains of you in this world after death.
A girl i met around 5 years ago got me to listen to Aurora... Needless to say, I was hooked.. Her voice is just so good. If you haven't listened to it yet there are several song but one that pops into my head right away is " Boy in the Grass" Also.. Them doing the " tiny desk concert" was pretty cool.. she sounds amazing in any setting it seems lol.
Aurora has one of the best live voices and she's a great song writer. I'm more of a metal, stoner rock, prog, experimental kind of guy but I really dig Aurora. My wife teases me about it.
Thank you so much for putting your voice knowledge to this song! Just watching your facial expressions, gave me that satisfaction that no one feels...or sees. Thank you!
I can watch this song of them over and over. Every time its just hits my soul. It feels so ancient, so mighty. Its a freakin master piece. And listen to aurora- through the eyes of a child!!!!! She is litteraly an angel.
I really enjoy your reactions! You have the most expressive face. It's truly a joy to watch. Wardruna's music feels like it's calling me home and I don't have one drop of Scandinavian blood in my veins. If you want to hear more of Aurora I would really recommend It Happened Quiet at the Nidarosdomen. She's one of my favourite artists, too. Such a pure sound.
"When you are on the road to hell, show your bravery." And the end is one of the most famous norse poems "Cattle dies, friends dies, and you yourself dies, but one thing never dies, your name". (ratutation)
I was fortunate enough to see Wardruna live just a few days ago in Los Angeles, and to see them is an experience, you become fully immersed into the atmosphere that is created around you. Their energy, sound, emotion and connection to the music fully engulfs the audience transporting them to a new place and bringing to that place a peace and warmth that is inequivocal. This song is literally asking, who will sing my song of my death to send me to peace... it's about how life isn't possible without death and death is just an pouring for new life.
I feel like this song is going to be featured at every Yule festival around the world this year, and rightfully so. I love how the music makes you so emotional as well. Your passion for music is quite inspiring.
Thank you so much for this beautiful reaction ❤ You would love the song 'Voluspa' when Einar Selvik sings with the wolfs. Einar spent 3 blessed and life changing days with the wolfs ❤
Whoa, you haven’t heard Aurora outside of Frozen? She’s an ethereal anomaly. An elven angel. Please, PLEASE, give her original music a go. Also, Einar has written music for tv series like Vikings, for instance, as well as some others. He’s the go to guy for authentic viking music in a lot of tv and film.
Thank you for choosing this song. Not only is wadruna unbelievable...but Aurora is beyond words !!!! 🌞 They both transport you to a land we all know is running deep in our veins. ...in our souls.
My father´s side is Norwegian and viking decend, I have no words to describe how proud this makes me feel of my heritage. Such a good feeling, like preparing to go to war for a greater cause and a noble death. This really goes through our primal selfs.
Omg this made my day. Its exciting to see that you enjoyed it so much. The best part of this was that you gave the song the respect/appreciation it deserves considering the context. A lot of people are going to say this but In Maidjan by Heilung would be a next great choice to follow up after this. The song is split into three parts and the final third is what will pique your interest the most. Not gonna spoil anything, but I will say it is a song that is to admired and enjoyed for all aspects, the voice, stage, setting, story, atmosphere all of it. Thank you so much for a wonderful reaction it definitely is the highlight of my day 💖
Oh my... this makes me feel like I felt when I first heard Wardruna. When you hear their music for the first time, that's a very special and private moment that touches your soul.
Wardruna did a lot of the vocals for the series The Vikings and they sing in the Old Norse Language as spoken in Iceland currently.................... enjoy P.S. if you want a real treat listen to the HU Band......... Mongolian Rock with traditional instruments and of course Throat Singing ............................ 👍
I personally get teared up every time i hear this version of the song, especially after reading the translated lyrics. this is such an amazing performance and song.
"the girl from frozen" you sweet summer child, please do yourself a favor and listen to Aurora's entire discography which dates back to the early 2010s
If you are going to go down the path of Aurora, then an absolute must watch and listen is her live performance of Murder (5,4,3,2,1) from the Nobel Peace Prize concert. You want to talk about emotional and how much she controls that stage during that performance. It's soooo good. Anything from her live is really good.
Yeah, but it is imoprtant that she rea ct to the nobel peace prize (as you said) not the original music video. AURORAS song is as always flawless but the video is not good.
I've probably listened to this song 10,000 times since discovering it maybe in 2022. This song is not just musical thing anymore for me. It's an experience that should be respected. Aurora's vocals in this is just not human. It's sacred, pure and the definition of feminine beauty in sound form. You'd think they're singing about heaven. It's actually about death. Which makes me love it even more. Then theres the primeval drums, horns and even visuals. It is truly a beautiful piece of art.
Ohhhhhh... you should check on AURORA... SHE IS WONDERFUL Look for: The Seed , or Exist for love, or her latest release secret garden... or humans of a different kind... you will discover a whole new universe
Helvegen is going to play on my funeral on repeat.. gorgeous song.. If you really want a treat do a reaction on Type O Negative! Peter Steele is a god!
I just watched your video for the first time, I love your reactions. These two together have so much power, they could literally move mountains with their voices. The first time I heard them together I was absolutely floored. Her voice is so soft, yet so powerful, it almost feels like she could reach the heavens if she would let her power flow. I love these two. Thank you for sharing.
She's now on the path that will inevitably lead to Heilung. Can't wait Either In Maidjan or Krigsgaldr from LIFA at Castlefest would be consummate samples

I have seen a lot of reaction vids to this performance and not one has expected to hear what they heard and by the end, had profoundly moving experiences. It's beautiful to watch, tbh.
Oh wow I am so excited for your reaction to this masterpiece. It gave me chills every time I heard it. Best regards from Germany - I love your reaction videos :)
I can't express all the emotions I feel whenever I hear this song. It's amazing. Please react to more of Aurora. She is incredible. Watch her live performances please!
Aurora is definitely "too much amazing". Every song of hers takes you on a journey into your very heart and soul. As well, she always disappears into the song she is singing, and takes us with her. She always sings with her whole body. (And she normally sings in English, btw) :) This very performance was actually how I discovered Aurora. And, yes, what a performance. I really like Wardruna's music, as well. It definitely stirs up something ancient and lovely in the blood. And, I agree, the visuals on stage were absolutely outstanding. I had a thought as you described the 6/8 time signature. Our heart has a three step beat, too. No wonder it has that effect, especially with those drums. (Yes, they use ancient instruments).

Aurora’s singing is the very essence of the word “pure.”
You should check out Eivor as well ;)

I love her, you´re right :D and Einar ufff ♥
Lol.
Somethings just draws you in, great comment 👍🏻
@@sunte91indeed. I'm still in awe of this performance. It's an experience watching it from a tiny smartphone screen.
Imagine being there live.... I'd probably just melt into the earth.
The last part he performs goes something like this:
Cattle die, kinsmen die
You yourself will also die
But the word about you will never die
If you win a good reputation
Cattle die, kinsmen die
You yourself will also die
I know one thing that never dies
The reputation of those who died
These are verses from Håvamål (the speach of the high-or the speach of Odin)

HELVEGEN translation.
Who shall sing me,
Into deathsleep sling me,
When I on the path to Hel go,
And this track I tread
Is cold, so cold, so cold.
I sought the songs,
I sent the songs.
Then the deepest well
Gave me tears so harsh
From the Slain-father's[1] pledge.
I know everything, Odin,
To whom you gave your eye.
Who shall sing me,
Into deathsleep sling me,
Whence I on the path to Hel go,
And this track I tread
Is cold, so cold, so cold.
Early or in the day's end,
The raven still knows if I fall.
Once you stand at the gate to Hel
And when you have to tear free,
I shall follow you
Over Gjallarbrú[2] with my song.
You will be free from the bonds that bind you,
You are free from the bonds that bound you!
"Cattle die,
Friends die,
So, too, must you die.
Though one thing
Never dies;
The fair fame one has earned.
Cattle die,
Friends die,
So, too, must you die.
I know one,
That never dies;
Judgement of a dead man's life."[3]
Thx!
Yes it’s true you can kill a man but you can never kill his reputation and his honour and I think to the Vikings honour had an almost supernatural meaning which would bestow luck and good fortitude to those in the dead mans family when they fought in battles.
From a time back when Gods cared about how people behaved instead of what they believed.
Third verse untranslated sounds like a reference to the Norne - who weave the threads of each life into a tapestry, who decides when to...cut each thread. the translation - while good - lost that part.
Not quite, but close enough

Are you high?
You should allways feel pride in your history.
You are decendent of Vikings.
Many are jealous of that. Remember that.
You would love Eivør Pálsdóttir - Trøllabundin!
This!
Yes yes yes!
OMG yes this
OMG YES
This song is otherworldly and I get goosebumps every time I listen to it.
The version where they sing this in a cave is breathtaking. The chills of the natural resonance of the cave with these songs...just wow!
Oh, I was there, it was so powerful ❤
I'll never forget the first time I listened to this song. My life changed forever.
Einar is truly my favorite singer. I love nothing more than to listen to him singing along with his lyre or drum and nothing else in the background. No band, no additional instruments. He's a genius.
Also, it's very common for him to drum on a piece of wood and incorporate natural sounds into the music.
I saw Wardruna in Norway, near a recostruction of a viking longhouse. It was my best experience. ❤
This music just makes me cry, can't help it. Goes straight to your soul.
Thanks, Dana Walsh!
This is my favorite version of Helvegen - Einar and Aurora are so good together. You should try out Einars solo performances, they are just so wonderful - much more intimate, it's mostly him and his lyra and nyckelharpa (and he is so passionate about his music and instruments)
There is also this version of them performing together. ruclips.net/video/cg0TQyjdHJ0/видео.html
Aurora's voice gives me goosebumps from head to toe, every time!
I once met Einar at a show in Stockholm and he is one of the nicest guys ever!
I met him in York. At the Viking festival 3 years ago and he explained how and why he is doing the music he does!. Amazing chat.
Much love from Germany, have a wonderful day ❤️
This is a very good suggestion. I'll definitely check this one for you. Thanks Loggosh!
😭😍❤
That's pretty deep. Well said.

This is such a beautiful song. I have shown SO many people this song to get them both into Wardruna and Aurora.
I lost track of how many times I have listened to this performance. In the last part he switches from song to recital, and he is delivering two stanzas of poetry that many Norwegians will have memorized. It says what remains of you in this world after death.

This song is not just musical thing anymore for me. It's an experience that should be respected. Aurora's vocals in this is just not human. It's sacred, pure and the definition of feminine beauty in sound form.

This is live a great inspiration.
