  • We went scuba diving in the Delaware River in search of the old Northampton Bridge that fell in the waterway back in the year 1955. Found the decaying ruins of what's left of the structure lying in between Easton, Pennsylvania and Phillipsburg, New Jersey. Things to worry about if scuba diving this area is the current flowing from the North to the South can drift you under the North side of the bridge Remnants and entrap you underneath its dark and dangerous debris. So be careful when diving or swimming near this location. Enjoy the video. This wreckage was from the Northampton Street Bridge (Free Bridge) that still stands today. This bridge was built in 1895, the 1955 flood took out a section in the middle; this is the chunk that got taken out- they repaired the break with new steel. in 1956.

Loved it. Sereal feeling down there. Lived all my life, both side of bridge. The 55 flood has a long story in itself. Wish people wouldn't throw shit in the river, though.

The whole bridge as it stands today was built in 1842, after the original wood structure was washed out in a flood in 1841. The only part that was replaced since then is the center span, which was, indeed, pushed out by the record flood crest late in the evening of Friday, August 19, 1955. This and many other related events are chronicled in the book "Devastation on the Delaware: Stories and Images of the Deadly Flood of 1955," by author Mary Shafer.

Not exactly- check my comment. There were older bridges in this area as you note, the oldest from 1809.

That is a piece of the bridge that stands today. In 1955 the river rose about 40 feet. a barn came floating down the river and smashed into the bridge Taking 100 feet of the bridge out. The bridge was repaired. That is why no vehicle over 3 ton is allowed

Built in 1895 floods wiped out the center of it in 1955... back then, you could have explored through buildings under water.
Bethlehem was in bad shape as well... the area where the musicfest big tent is, was all industrial, hotels, junk yards and houses until that flood.
Cool video, your stuff is really interesting!

Love this the flood of 55 was powerful the damage it left behind. Cross the free Bridge hang a left they have it marked on the brick apartments right on N Main St how high the Delaware was.

I know that a lot of boat anchors get lost in there. The Easton Firefighter divers used to bring them up during their diving exercises.

We lived next to Scott park we dove there in the late 50s with a diagram compressor retrieved copper wire and there was a light pole that was visible when water was low we just followed it down to the debris

That bone I'm sure is from one of the victims that died in that river. Many people were not recovered from the flood of '55. I'm sure you would find more bones.

the quality of the steel should be worth pulling out. I guess this part of why we pay tolls to just let it rust/pollute the water?

I like it! We have a collapsed bridge here in the American river. I have made several videos there.
    I have a few questions.
    What was the water temp?
    What was your max depth?
Nice job on the vid. Keep up the good work.

    • @STILLFIN
      @STILLFIN  2 года назад +1

I'm not sure what the water temperature was but the max depth was about 16ft.
