  • A Discussion and Review of the Omega Seamaster Professional 300 2254. The discussion looks at the history of the M.O.D Rolex MilSub and Military Seamaster variants then looks at the development of the Seamaster Professional, comparing both the James Bond model with the 2254. Ultimately expressing why the watch is the purest expression and homage of classic military inspired divers.

This Omega came in different iterations. The 2054 and 2254 were the same watch, with the 2054 having the "Bond" bracelet and the 2254 having the 3-link "Speedy" bracelet. It also came in Electric Blue, as well, reference 2255.80. Both the black and blue iterations came in a quartz model, references 2264.50 and 2265.50, respectively. The watch was also made in titanium, reference 2231.50. Omega issued a limited edition of the watch with both applied indices and applied Omega logo for the America's Cup, reference 2533.50. These features were then carried over to reference 2230.50 which had removed the America's Cup text (often refereed to as the "Non-AC" dial) in favor if the classic Seamaster text. A white dialed GMT, reference 2538.20, and the 150th Anniversary Seamaster with a gray dial, reference 2232.30, are other iterations of this design.

This was my first nice watch that I bought back in 2002. I wore it everyday for 15 years until my collection started growing. I've done a ton of legitimate scuba diving with it (which was the reason I bought it). I've also worn it with a tux at black tie events. It is so versatile. I still wear it regularly but it will go to my son in a few years as it is his favorite in my collection. If Omega re releases it I'll be the first to buy one simply for nostalgia. Just don't mess it up Omega!

I wore the Omega 2254.50.00 Omega through my tours in Afghanistan. I have a picture of myself in Uruzgan Province, sterile desert BDUs and modified grooming standards (beard; our unit was authorized to grow them in Afghanistan), and my trusty Omega is visible on my wrist.

This is such a lovely reference. It has everything I miss in the modern Submariner - matte dial, painted indices, aluminum bezel insert - in a very handsome case with excellent proportions.
One thing to note, the screw down helium valve provides positive assurance against leakage through the helium escape valve. Even with the crown open, the watch is still water resistant to a depth of 50m per design. If the time setting crown is left unscrewed, full water resistance is still maintained. Leaving either open doesn't flood the inside of the watch or otherwise expose the interior to water if the gaskets are in good order. Of course, it is good practice to leave both screwed down when they're not in actual use.

I own both the 2254 and the 165.024 (Civil version) and they are wonderful watches. Interestingly at the time when I bought my 2254 in 2002, I chose it over a Rolex Submariner as at the time the watch had a better bracelet, sleek profile and a date complication that was subtle, also at that time significantly cheaper ( around AUD$1000!).

I wear this quite often, and it's my absolute favorite. Mine is quartz, which I PREFER, being slimmer and lighter and not requiring the attention a spring-loaded miniature gearbox does. I did exactly as you mentioned, by purchasing a later genuine Omega complete bezel & insert to have smaller bezel numbers and modernize the looks. (PERFECT suggestion, and already done on mine 🙂). I sold the bracelet it comes on (blasphemy!), and prefer it dive-style on a genuine caoutchouc rubber Panerai Submersible strap, which was notched with a razor blade to fit the smaller lug width. Simple to do. Looks totally OEM, and talk about comfortable! Built like a tank too!

I remember the day like it was yesterday. North Vancouver, British Columbia, 1999. Looking at that watch in the display case thinking it was the most beautiful watch I'd ever seen. Oft forgotten fact: When that watch was introduced, the rest of the world got it on the speedy style bracelet whereas the US got it on the Bond bracelet. My son has it now and to this day still gets compliments on it 20 years after the fact. The 1120 movement is rugged and reliable and still keeps COSC time. Like the old Seiko 6139 it's indestructible. There was a lot of chatter on that watch back then on Rolex forums. "Should I get the Submariner or the 2254?" Moderators got so sick of the question they forbade it being asked further. IF any of you are old Timezone types you'll remember that. Still my favourite watch, ever. p.s. There's something wrong with the watch at the 7:45 mark. The 2254 did not and does not have a white date wheel ;)

The omega came in 1967 and was already in civilian production for a few years before. The Rolex milsub had to adopt the seamaster sword hands and bezel markings to comply with mod specs

Great review! Since you're not a fan of the helium valve on this reference, you might want to look at the ref.2538.20 or Seamaster GMT aka Great White. It has the same case, 'gladiator' hands, bracelet and dial style without the helium valve but with a 24-Hr bezel

Back in the day. Walking into the jeweler, looking at picking up the blue Bond watch. Tried it on but for some reason, it just didn’t do it for me. The blue face and bezel looked faded, no pop. I then had it put back in case, then I noticed the 226450 sitting next to the Bond watch. Very striking looking , and it didn’t look like any other watch in the case. Very unique and the best purchase I ever made. I still keep it in the rotation, and she still gets looks and comments.

Excellent video. This has always been one of my very favourite watches. Something like 15 years ago a colleague at work ordered the quartz version on the grey market, and a few days after receiving it, he received a second! They had accidentally sent him two! He offered it to me at a good price and sadly I wasn’t in a position to go ahead. My biggest watch regret: had I bought it, perhaps I wouldn’t have bought the many watches I’ve had since, in my search for the ideal watch!

The Rolex Mil-Sub was used by the SBS for a very short period, and was issued as all kit is as a sign out sign in, lose it pay for it....a lot got lost!! The Omega 2254 is a great watch, especially slung on a NATO strap...it then changes character into more of what it was supposed to as per design! Great and informative vid as always...would have liked to have seen a couple more examples though..perhaps more of the "Dirty Dozen"!

2250.50 here - this is my GADA watch. Perfect proportions, a true tool watch at its core. Sits on a Marathon rubber strap and flies under the radar. Also looks great on a milanese for the No Time To Die look

Belatedly found this video. How wonderful. I bought a 2254 in 2004 and wore it every day for 12 years (give or take services). The very best modern Seamaster IMHO. A shame about the bezel, which was a bit plasticky and hard to grip, with a dissatisfying action compared to a Sub. But that aside, a pretty perfect watch. I've never understood why they abandoned this design approach.

What a great tribute to the 165.024 the 2254 is. If only Omega had left the quarter Arabic numerals on the 2254 that made the 165.024’s dial so gorgeous. I suppose there is still the Trilogy Seamaster 300 ‘57 for that look.
The sword hands are so much more attractive than the modern skeletonised Seamaster hands and the 2254 pretty much looks like the modern day interpretation of a military issue watch.
I wonder if there are any members of the forces out there wearing the 2254 in the field?
Yet another great video my friend. ✊

Thank you, brother. I agree, the Arabics would compliment it so much (but it does look pretty clean without them) and I promise to reply to your emails. Admittedly, I have been overworking and haven't had time to think... As always, thank you for leaving comments on the videos and your baby proplof looks absolutely stunning (fits very much in line with these milspec inspired pieces) ;)

Wow. You covered two of the best watches from Omega and Rolex. Look at that military spec man, the 'T', the triangles, the markers, the aggressive case. and overall simplicity of design.... no wonder you do not find ANY of these watches for sale. Auction maybe perhaps?

What a great video and what a great watch the 2254 is. And as most divers it looks so damn good on a G10 strap ;-) The only thing I don't like is the bezel.
I hope I can finally get my hands on the modern interpretation of the Issued Seamaster by "MKII" by the end of this year.
As far as I "know" the first by MOD orderer "MilSub" was the Rolex 6538, followed by the Seamaster 300. This was then followed by the 5513, double ref 5513/5517 and 5517. Last but not least was the CWC RN Diver I think in the early 80s and the CWC SBS Diver Watch.

Awsome video, love all your work! I'm a fan of this reference myself and the reason why I've never pull the trigger is that I'm a bracelet guy and have a 16cm circumference wrist...so I'm torn between this and the equivalent midsize...

Great video mate. I like this version bc of the Broad Arrow hands, similar to my Planet Ocean 2201.50.00. Have looked at the titanium version of this one w/the blue dial...might be a runner. Keep up the great content. Cheers from the Nevada desert. 👍⌚

Ah David, I wish I was in Nevada...I dream to one day land up in Arizona (maybe if you know anyone who'd be keen to sponsor me?) ;) the 2254 is such an interesting piece and its amazing that it helped set the groundwork for the PO lines. I'm going to continue the search the Omega catalogue and hope to pull out more gems in the future. And thank you for the comment! Cheers from the south coast of England!

Another feature to look for by collectors is whether the caseback has ever been opened. When new, this watch had a very small, red wax (or paint?) seal on the caseback-to-case edge. It looks like a little red dot. The Speedmaster Moonwatch had one, too.

  • @johnulmer1622

I think the case back is underappreciated on this watch. I often take mine off just to look at it.
