I remember when My Friend only played this version and hated Mafia. I tried so Hard to convince him that the PC-version is the best version and that Mafia is One of the greatest games ever made. 15 years later he tried it on PC (first time he owned a PC) and now he Loves it
For me I loved it. I’ve always loved any 1920-1950 entertainment, my father was born in 1949 we’d talk about “old days” he said he seen mafia people downtown Chicago in 1958. Stop my father and his gang from robbing a Goldblatt's store on Ashland.
I played Mafia 1 on PS2 way back on 2004 before I realized I was missing a lot of not playing the PC version (until around 2013) since I didn't know the PC version was the original port of the game. Despite the amount of loading times going across the Giuliano Bridge and in-between missions, I still enjoyed it back then. But after playing the PC version and seeing the amount of graphics (FPS, Draw Distance, non-disappearing body and blood on deceased enemies), car damage physics, the amount of diversity of AI cars, and features (Real-Time cutscenes and Free Ride Extreme) missing on PS2, I don't think I could ever go back playing Mafia on PS2 anymore. The only exclusive features found on PS2 are Racing Mode and the Bigfoot vehicle on Free Ride. Quick tip: Press L2 or R2 to auto-aim to enemies. I didn't discover this feature until Election Campaign (18th mission) so you can imagine how frustrating it was for me aiming manually on PS2 analog stick while dying countlessly.
You're most likely using RCA/Composit cable with a modern tv that's why it's so dark, get RGB/Scart or Componente cables, it will also look much better
Component is always better. The darkness is caused by shitty A/D conventer in PS2 to HDMI from ebay (those also use component signal internally but their conversion to digital sucks). If you connect component directly to decent TV it has normal colours and brightness.
This is how I started on my Mafia journey. On Ps2. My brother bought the game used for a couple bucks, and he didn't like the opening. I tried it and fell in love. Played the crap out of it for several years, before I realized the PC version existed and would run on my terrible PC. I remember saying how the PC version felt like real life compared to PC. Aside from the long loading times, especially when you add loading across the bridges, I didn't have any complaints with this version.
Differences: 1. Graphics are the worst of the 3 ports 2. You have a map instead of a blank radar 3. Draw distance is awful 4. You can carry all weapons, on PC you can carry only sidearms, 1 hidden large weapon and the second in your hands 5. Bodies disappear after a few seconds 6. Instead of Free Ride Extreme there is Racing 7. Cutscenes are pre-rendered 8. A few map changes 9. On PS2 when you shoot at car doors they will fall off
are the freeride extreme vehicles are back? because me buying this for mah ps2 collection and honestly I love the hillbilly and if it dont got it, aint worth it (also I like the map its looks cool for a poster)
Ps2 to hdmi adapter is what makes the picture darker. Hyperkin and pound cables do the same. Not sure why but small price to pay to hook up a ps2 to modern TVs. Great video once again

This was the only way I could play this game back in the day due to not having a PC. It done the job and I loved the game and it probably helped that none of my mates had it on pc so i never knew how good it could be lol.
I actually fully played through the Ps2 version. My dad bought it since he was a big fan of GTA at the time and it being called a "GTA like/clone" made my dad wanna get it. Though after the first level, he gave up and said it was trash and nothing like GTA. So I gave it a go and since I was a fan of gangster movies and such, I had a feeling I'd have fun. The learning curve like the PC version is high but once you got used to it, it became second nature for me. Cause I too went into it expecting GTA like gameplay and such. (I was 14 when I played it in 2005, sue me) I especially struggled on things like the race, the stealth mission with Salvatore and one of the late game missions. Nowadays though, I don't own this version since it was my dads and it sadly got messed up so I can't play it anymore. I'm honestly thinking of tracking down a copy and playing the game again, now being more tempered with my gaming experiences and such. Also just to give a few other heads ups for this version. You can't store as many cars in this one, many of the guns recoil has been reduced to be more manageable, the speed limit was increased from 40 to 60 and as you saw, there are load times in between the small island where salieri's bar is and the rest of the city. Plus the console version has more tutorials to explain certain things in game, rather than having a separate tutorial mode. Otherwise this port is nothing like the PC version, but I don't think it's the "worst port ever". It was ambitious for it's time, but since GTA was the big kid on the block, people did what my dad and I did. Compare it to that and then hate it for not being GTA.

Later I found a copy of the OG Xbox version at Goodwill, which I purchased. Kind of bittersweet that I only have two of the three, and not all of them. Oh well.
I've only ever played the PC version. Had never even seen gameplay footage of the console ports until now. Wow is all can say. This looks so terrible lmao.
2 years late but it’s good to note that it looks worse than it actually is, you have to remember these games were meant to be played on a CRT screen that had scanlines, without a CRT the game looks jagged and messy, also playing on a modern screen will make the game run much worse as the console has to work harder to put it on more powerful hardware
As a kid, the ps2 version of mafia was the first m game I've played at 7. I only really played free ride mode because it was too dark in the first misson and it didn't help that the sunlight was reflecting off the TV I was playing on at the time.
Biggest problem with the PS2 and Xbox ports was the driving the cars were so fast on console for whatever reason maybe to have a closer experience to GTA I guess and the lack of damage to cars. The world of course is very Dead kinda strange seeing Lost Heaven like this after playing on PC for years

I remember picking this up for PC way back when it released. damn that was a good game. in fact, I still have a copy just don't have a PC to play it on. really excited for August and the remake on this awesome game. Many happy memories
I had and still have the Xbox version and the PC Version. Players through the whole game on the Original Xbox when the definitive Edition was announced. Still in Love with the Game (especially the PC Version). There are some differences with the Map: some streets and buildings are missing on the console version. Some Details are missing (for example the guy that wants to jump of the Guilano Bridge).
Roxy, the PC version is the original version of the game, relased in 2002. The console ports came out in 2004. And indeed, they are awful. Their only real positive aspect is the racing mode, but it can be modded into the PC version.
The console versions are just not the same game compared to the PC version - they had to scale it down a lot to make it run on console hardware (the PS2 version does not even have headlights for cars at night so you have to drive in the dark lol) - this video shows the differences between all the versions - ruclips.net/video/5tp5qyN3_7U/видео.html But props to the developers for managing to get such a demanding game at the time working on consoles.
I played it first on PC. Loved it. Saw it for the PS2 in the shop once and wanted to give it a try. All i can remember was the PS2 port not having Free Ride Extreme. So I quickly re-installed it on PC and played it on PC again.
Got this game for Christmas as a child along with my first ps2 and a bunch of games like Vice City, Gta3(played at the time but never owned), The Getaway and WWE Here Comes The Pain
Rooker vision did a good video comparing the versions of Mafia recently. But this look quite good for a ps2 port in 2002. Also, did you read a interview with Hangar 13 boss about the remake?
I completed the xbox version not to long ago and it's not as bad as people say it is. Obviously it doesn't look as good but it is perfectly playable also there is a button to auto target over enemies.
I remember playing Vice City on PS2 and I wasn't bothered much by the loading times between the 2 parts of the map, and anyway at that time, there was no PC version. But, for Mafia it was the other way around. It was first a PC game, and it has been ported to consoles after, in 2004. Playing on consoles would have sucked for me, knowing that there was a better version on PC already, without those extra loading times...
Well, at least they're not completely different. Imagine how the people who played Spiderman 2 on PC felt like when they discovered the console version.
I'm playing this game in ps2 and I'm stuck in the mission "Lucky Bastard". After killing Morello, I exit the Harbor and suddenly the car goes out of the map. What can I do? It happens all the time.
I played the XBOX version in 2005; never knew it was a port. I enjoyed it a lot; never had any issues with it. Just tried firing up the PC version, and it doesn't take kindly to controller support. The game looks better, but I don't want to use a keyboard to play it.
I rent this once back in the day for my PS2. I was a child so I didn't know how to play properly. Then, I heard this was an awesome game. So I decided to buy it for once. My disapoinment was enormous... The only good version of this game was the PC one... The PS2 port is barely unplayable...
I still have this game on PS2 great game and ahead of its time.Granted there are some issues like no sort of GPS when it comes to maps/ driving challenge but that adds to the games appeal i hope the remake would make this close to being perfect.
Thank god I’ve played the pc version of the original Mafia Game, really can’t wait for the remake late next month, I hope it will be good and Hangar 13 have learnt from their mistakes on the underwhelming Mafia 3, but I did like that game though.
Will say this, graphically even with the hdmi adapter it will look and run significantly worse on a modern screen compared to an old school CRT tv, these games and consoles were designed to be ran on the tvs/screens of their time and so when you run it on a newer screen the console has to work harder to put the image out, as well as CRTs had scanlines and without them you get a messier and more jagged image
It's a '' gem '' port actually. I remember back in the day i was like 9 or 10, my ubcle had ps2. And i had also. But i didnt had games. So i break in his room when he was at work and between 1200 games he had i choose this and Metal Gear Solid 3. Its my all time favorite games, and also God Of War. Anyway, i enjoyed playing this game as a kid in a dark room late night. Ps: I didnt scratch a Cd :D And i have to say, yes this is about Mafia game. But Goddamn i cant believe the MGS series shut down. Without Kojima, its pointless. 3th part for me had fantastic story and it was ahead of its time. Sad.
I remember this game being incredibly hard. I loved it but never completed it and levels in the church and countryside was so hard because it was dark. Not as dark as your game. I guess the gamma on my TV was different. The controls were also shit on console but i didn't know any better. Shooting moving targets is really hard to do compared to PC. I guess all I can say is that I am gratefull that this game got ported to PS2 or I would never have heard of it or played it. But Mafia is far superior on PC and when I played it on PC years later it all made sense:P Playing this game with mouse and keyboard felt natural and was clearely the way it was intended to be played!
When I play it on my ps2, the frame rate is horrible, the game is super slow and feels like I'm playing driver 2 on ps1, which also lags alot too, not sure if that's just my PlayStation or whether it's the game themselves
My PC couldn't run the game back then but my dad bought me the PS2 version, the whole thing was in German and you couldn't change the language and it was dubbed too not just the subtitled in German. Also the Free Ride sucked because only Free Ride Small was available, and there was only like 5 different car on the streets. The only good thing came with this version is Racing mode.

I'm playing this game in ps2 and I'm stuck in the mission "Lucky Bastard". After killing Morello, I exit the Harbor and suddenly the car goes out of the map. What can I do? It happens all the time.
You Americans wanted it, here you have
Knight Rider 2?
EPIC
I'm the WR holder of part 1 speedrun :p Also, Mafia's my favorite game.
Its kinda like PlayStation 1 - GTA SA had a whole lot of different visual fidelity compare to this ....
Gta sa was never in PS1...
Danig Acosta that’s why I’m saying a ps2 gta Sa had a much better visuals than a ps2 game that is pretty much only comparable to a ps1 game lol
After finishing Mafia DE on PS4 damn... I want original Mafia on my PS2 so bad!
I played the XBOX version in 2005; never knew it was a port. I enjoyed it a lot; never had any issues with it.
Just tried firing up the PC version, and it doesn't take kindly to controller support. The game looks better, but I don't want to use a keyboard to play it.
Image ratio fail this will be 4:3 if it’s 2004.
Blimey i was so Bad at shooting in this Game on the ps2 I was so frustrated That i havent Played the Game in 10 years
The other side of your poster is different from the one I have
I rent this once back in the day for my PS2.
Anybody else notice the 60 miles per hour is the limit instead of pcs 40
Your channel name is censored on RUclips's search bar. It doesn't show up on my recent searches and it also doesn't suggest it when I type it.
I know I'm thinking of changing it lol
@@SexyBiscuit Call it 'Hot biscuit' haha
@@KenpachiZaraki601 I would say Nerdy Biscuit is better
@@SexyBiscuit Might as well just go for Roxy Biscuit.
It doesn't include Freeride Extreme.
Its made by Ilusion softworks (now 2K Czech - Hangar 13) and the gathering at start means Gathering of Developers
Holy crap, europoors had blue ps2 cases? Thats amazing
They need to bring out more true crime the New York one was crazy for back in the day
It's a '' gem '' port actually. Ps: I didnt scratch a Cd :D
And i have to say, yes this is about Mafia game. But Goddamn i cant believe the MGS series shut down. Without Kojima, its pointless. 3th part for me had fantastic story and it was ahead of its time. Sad.
I picked up a copy of this game used for PS2, but my system could not play it. I dont know why.
ı" played ps 2 series 2016 😢😢😢 good days ••••••
Why Playstation version of mafia looks like a bootleg java mobile game in comparison to the original game?
Because the guys who did the port are knock offs.
I played this game on PS2 before the PC, and loved it. Still a great game.
"I like how the pedestrians stop their vehicles and go about their business."
Looks at Watch Dogs in the corner of shame.
The speed limiter exists on the PC version. I think it was F5 by default.
Wow 666 likes! I don't really think this game is existing on Playstation 2 nice too see that I thing! The manual is really cool!
Lmao lol big like xd.
When I play it on my ps2, the frame rate is horrible, the game is super slow and feels like I'm playing driver 2 on ps1, which also lags alot too, not sure if that's just my PlayStation or whether it's the game themselves
I can't believe I forgot about you I haven't watched you in over a month I have to catch up
The cutscenes are improved, they have background blur
this is the first version i played... *sigh*
One of the best games of all time. On PC anyway.
Im pretty sure you can scroll in and out on pc. If i remember its page up and page down.
My dad rented it when it came out. the cars were so slow. the guns were bad.
That art cover is so much better than north american version!
This game was so hard to beat on the ps2 compared to the pc.
PS2 games look a lot better on CRT because those tvs utilized better Anti Aliasing.
immune to eye cancer, thank god
horrible :D
Is it worth getting because I don't have pc but I do have a ps2.
Im 4 years late but the cutscenes are all pre rendered like the pc
I assume the darkness comes from the converter not the game but I do know that Socom 1 is dark af too and needs a CRT or high end OSSC / RetroTink 5x
I only played PS2 version on PCSX2
