Not to hate or troll, but i haven't played this game for 5 years or even longer. Yesterday i started the race on normal with damage and got it the second time. You don't drift in this, it's a racing car from the 30s not some japanese car from today. When you see a turn you break very early and you countersteer when the car begins to swerve. It's as easy as this. I literally can't even drive this bad if i wanted. And this is on easy, lmao. 17:00 why would you say that you prevailed on normal, if you won the race on easy? And i love how concensous is that this race was "bad" when in fact it only was hard. It never was bad to begin with. There are videos on RUclips where real racing pilots talked positive about the physics and the race itself.
i was 4 when this game came out, and one of my earliers gaming memories is watching my dad struggle with this race. a few years ago when the remake came out, he did the race in one attempt without even calling me over. that got me quite disappointed. today, he booted up the remake again and was struggling with the mission. I coincidentally walked up to him at that point and offered to try it for him, did the drive to the track in one try and the race in two. that made me quite proud
Great video!!! Watched it for the second time now. :D The TV and the Computer scenes came out looking awesome, especially the computer one. The mood is just awesome and the attention to detail, the nostalgia is real xD It was also great watching a part of the process in the live stream. Keep up the awesome work Phil! :)
Played the OG Mafia for the first time yesterday and wow I had roller coasters of emotion! a great gaming experience to do, all gamers should at least try this mission once in their lives!
Yup, my friends and me were playing this back in 2003. One friend won the race and went on to the next mission. I did not sleep until I finished it myself. This was the matter of honour
I had no issues with the race BUT SHOOTING THE GUNS OF THE POLICE CAR CHASING U was absolute hell. They tell u to duck when they shoot and shoot when they reload but you’ll get it in 1 try if you just ignore that and shoot non stop. I was so annoyed my god
Yeeeesssss this is exactly how i remember it, there was another YT video where the guy said it was easy and he didn't know what people were talking about. Really funny video.
Dunno if it's the case just on my PC, but using WASD and the arrow keys has a tiny difference between the two, which I learned to utilize and ever since the race wasn't so hard. I think using the arrow keys over WASD grants you a smoother car control, which can allow you to prevent yourself from spinning out after a slight turn.
I think the main trick is to not hit the throttle too early. It's impossible to keep the car under control if you try to steer and accelerate at the same time, so the trick is to wait until the car is straightly aligned after a corner and only then hit the throttle. The car has more than enough speed to take on the competition, so you don't need to go constantly as fast as possible. If you're careful it might feel like you're slow, but it's actually much faster when you're not constantly spinning :P
Wonderful tip, thanks Martijn! That's how I approached it in the end, going off the throttle before curves, and then carefully accelerating again when the track becomes straight. In other words: Don't be greedy ;) Though the other cars aren't *that* slow I've found out.
@@PixelProphecy But it was not on the hardest difficulty, right? And with or without patches/updates? Because one update (if not more) made the race easier......

This was awesome! There has not been single video from you Phil that I did not enjoy! Regarding this mission, I always found the driving mission before the actual race to be much harder for some reason....perhaps because of the way the city of Lost Heaven was designed!?
Oh yes! But at least it was possible to try different routes with less police, for example. But I also had to try that one multiple times until I succeeded and was yearning for more 3rd person shooting. But nope! 😅
@@PixelProphecy you did not enjoy driving like a madman in this frustrating mission? Well good news here is another one that is even more frustrating! Hope you are happy.
I recently got the Mafia trilogy and was warned by multiple people about the race mission and how frustratingly difficult it is. Really wasn’t looking forward to it, especially since I’m already rather crap at driving in games. When the mission came up, I was absolutely dreading it. Strangely and luckily enough, I ended up beating it first time. Pretty sure it was complete luck though because I took a corner too fast and instead of crashing and flipping over, my car just bounced off the side and rocketed down the track. Got me pretty far ahead of the other cars and was able to win by just driving carefully after that. I’m glad I got lucky because I have no patience with missions I keep failing constantly.
Just finished the race on Extreme yesterday in what is probably my 100th playthrough. I couldn't do it on the first try, nor the 2nd, nor the 3rd, but overall it didn't take long. It took waaaaaaay faster than my first playthrough. Originally, I was playing the un-patched first release. I'm beginning to suspect that the original race was harder than the patched one on Extreme. My time lap time with a keyboard on PC is 1.29.5-1.30.0. I never realized you can cut the hairpin, though! Or maybe I did try it 20 years ago but didn't think it was worth it.
Quality work, didn't expect it to be perfectly honest. Very handy to show us all the games and music used in the video at the end, I can't think of anyone else who has done that well. I don't know how much you were screwing around and if you honestly needed that many tries. Of course one can have a lapse in judgement when leading by such a margin, but to be honest you could have been snailing your way to the finish one on that fifth lap. I must be the only one in history who enjoyed this mission. I actually used to race and try to beat lap and race times, I kid you not. Stringing together multiple victories in a row, was certainly not a problem. Perhaps that's why in the Definitive Edition, I managed to complete the race on Classic difficulty in about fifteen minutes. Albeit the mission is inferior in the new game in my opinion, among other things, you have the abysmal ram feature. In my opinion, the person who gave it the green light for the game should hang.
Thanks for watching and the comment! And none of my failings were deliberate, I decided to make a video out of my many attempts after the fact 😅 I haven't played the new Mafia game yet but I am curious to find out about how the race handles. Regardless, I don't agree that the person who kept the ram feature in "should hang". I know you were joking but still that's not cool.
@@PixelProphecy I didn't mean that the person should literally be murdered or tried and hung. Not sure why you're so up tight about it, did one of your relatives hang? The person should be fired, because the implementation of the feature in part destroys the game. It's clear that they didn't actually play the game themselves.
You're not, I put it in intentionally because analog TVs used to emit this 15625 Hz tone as it's their horizontal scan rate (at least in the PAL broadcast system).
Ive always been really fond of this mission and its the ones setting it up beforehand. I remember when i first played the mission in question. I was in awe as id never seen earlier era representation of racing in gaming at that time. I still really like doing this mission wen i occasionally plat through it. I just came back from playing the remake version of that level. wanna give a a applause to those who grew up with the OG and manage to beat the OG version of the stage.
Mafia was a good game but it took me months to complete that sodding level (it was pre-patch and I put the game aside for a few months). I only stuck with it because I enjoyed the earlier missions overall. That missions is sole reason why I never returned to the game after beating it.
I don't know how about original but in definitive edition on hardest difficulty I beated it in first try with a keyboard, it didin't seem hard how everybody saying, but I say why peoples saying its hard cuz of how unstable everything feels, but if u try it gentle and play it like a real racing simulator, I would say definitely its easy, but again, I am in to sim racing games, so maybe that makes a difference.
Oh darn the early 00's nostalgia. I liked the free roam in Mafia but I'm really bad at driving in GTA-likes... I'm sure that I was only good at driving in Saints Row.
Having played countless hours of Dirt Rally, I actually found this stage easy. If you have your racing line right and know your breaking points it’s not that hard. I wish I had basic racing knowledge back then.
First time on this channel, love it! However I think it was really unfair to do your attempts on patched Mafia - you should try this on unpatched version. Eighth attempt? I've done like 20 attempts a day for 7 days to get through this mission on original version.
The patched version was the only one I had and I take every help I can get. I vaguely recall being really frustrated as well when I beat the game in 2002 but I don't recall how many attempts it took me in the end. Forgetfulness is bliss! 😅
Good job on the editing and I'm glad you made this because I honestly thought the remake was difficult on classic difficulty, glad to learn the original was just as or more difficult. I had to turn down the difficulty just by one and I beat it on the first try but I tried for probably 2 hours and I could never get 1st. Infuriating game but still fun.
I wish I could relate to this pain, but as a lover of racing games, this is very easy for me. If I play safe, I drive consistently about 1:30 lap times without any cuts. I managed to overtake some of them by one lap too. Also you can overtake all the opponents at the start so it's pretty much guaranteed win every time. Changing difficulty didn't really change anything for me, I guess they drive faster at extreme. In the remake there's actually some racing, as you can't just overtake everyone immediately, but I won that on first try at classic difficulty. I'd say that the remake is more forgiving if you do mistakes though and the driving is easier.
Imagine some other hypothetical game. It introduces itself as being one thing then becomes something different 5 missions in, and this novelty mission has completely stopped you from playing the rest of the game.
I'm pretty sure that Mafia is my favorite game of all times. I played it first time in 2004. Racing mission was a nightmare. Eventually beat it. But it took me least a few weeks. Maybe 1-2 tries a day and i gave up. But i still remembre the feeling when i got it through - butterflyes in stomache etc. I play Mafia least once a year, and racing mission, even on extreme level is sooo easy now😅
in a game where driving feels pretty janky this race was a horrible idea for it to be mandatory to beat if gta 5 has too much traction control this game has the oppsite which makes sense given the bike tires they drive on but even on controller at about 25% acceleration theres still just no traction its like youre driving on ice the wheelspin doesnt even give any forwards momentum i feel like gta iv did it right where the suspension although seemingly too soft was actually the most realistic as cars are just heavy on another note as the definite edition forces you to use simulation driving when playing on classic difficulty it makes the race especially horrible because the tiny micro adjustments done to the steering in arcade driving mode are impossible for a human to consistently do on controller to outpace the AI let alone worry about the traction while trying to follow the racingline and do overtakes
Ahahahah, cool video, thanks) Fev days ago, I tried Mafia remaster on ps5, and faced with tis mission on classic difficulty. As form me, it was much harder, than on non-patched version of the Mafia from my childhood... Maybe you can remaster this video with remastered mafia? :D

The only reason it was bad was because people were expecting GTA clone, with arcade-like behaviour of cars. Meanwihle Mafia was originaly supposed to be racing simulator, with fully functional racing mechanics, like oversteer, understeer and grip (and frequent lose of it if you werent prepared). Combined with the fact that your car was overpowered cigar on thin wheels and behaved like overpowered cigar on thin wheels, you got your issues. Once you got used to this fact and treated it like racing game, the race was actually pretty fun. I was actually pretty displeased when devs added racing minigames to console only. What was pain in the ass though, was collecting cars in extreme ride , with their limitations and extra rules. Also fun fact: There used to be a shortcut that lets you skip almost half of each lap, making the race laughably easy, but devs patched it out. In the very same patch they introduced difficulty settings.

And i love how concensous is that this race was "bad" when in fact it only was hard. It never was bad to begin with. There are videos on RUclips where real racing pilots talked positive about the physics and the race itself.
Still doesn’t change the fact it’s a garbage level in a great game 👍
@@Michael1234567860 true, it took me a few tries to get it, but the thing that always gets me is that first turn.
Craig Franklin first turn literally judges the rest of the race 😂
“Not some Japanese car from today” I’m amused that you think drifting is a Japanese thing.
BRH this race almost broke my soul during this playthrough. I'm literally raging at just your title :D
2002 was the greatest year of my life. No joke.
Instant like! My favorite youtuber rn
Wow, thanks! 🥰
i was 4 when this game came out, and one of my earliers gaming memories is watching my dad struggle with this race. a few years ago when the remake came out, he did the race in one attempt without even calling me over. that got me quite disappointed.
today, he booted up the remake again and was struggling with the mission. I coincidentally walked up to him at that point and offered to try it for him, did the drive to the track in one try and the race in two. that made me quite proud
Thanks for sharing, and congrats for beating that darn race!
Glad you enjoyed it and also thanks for following the BTS-livestream! Makes me very happy to know that the nostalgic bits hit right home :)
Who told you this was a shooting game? This is a driving game. Just like GTA
Played the OG Mafia for the first time yesterday and wow I had roller coasters of emotion! a great gaming experience to do, all gamers should at least try this mission once in their lives!
Very well made and an all round amazing video
Thank you! Much appreciated! 😊
Didn't understand the hate for this racing bit
now I understand
Punched my keyboard and snapped the disc in rage doing that level when I was a kid, such happy days 🤣
Childhood rage is the best in nostalgia rage! 😂
Yup, my friends and me were playing this back in 2003. One friend won the race and went on to the next mission. I did not sleep until I finished it myself. This was the matter of honour
This is a great video bring me back to the early 2000's
I had no issues with the race BUT SHOOTING THE GUNS OF THE POLICE CAR CHASING U was absolute hell. They tell u to duck when they shoot and shoot when they reload but you’ll get it in 1 try if you just ignore that and shoot non stop. I was so annoyed my god
Mafia Definitive Edition "The Racing" Mission still difficult despite coming out last year. Took like 2 hours to beat it.
Curious how I made it? Here's the link to my "Behind the Edit" stream: ruclips.net/video/H3qLHF0hf74/видео.html
5:38 My God this cutscene's forever burned in my brain.
Yeeeesssss this is exactly how i remember it, there was another YT video where the guy said it was easy and he didn't know what people were talking about. Really funny video.
Another great production, nice work!
Glad you like it!
Interesting! Never even considered there could be a difference! Thanks for sharing!
@@samfkt I played the patched version from GOG and switched between "easy" and "normal", my winning run was on normal. I have no direct comparison but it felt easier than with the unpatched game 18 years ago 😅
Yes exactly I beated it after like 4th try with the extreme difficulty and I had the best lap time of 1:27
Us: *wonders where the next video is*
Phil: "Just over here making blender scenes."
No wonder lol. Nice job.
😅 Thanks for sticking with me!
This was incredible. Please make more Mafia videos.
Its like they didnt playtest it and just said fuck it
Or the testers were already too good at the game and wanted it harder ;)
that was an amazing video!
Precisely! 😂
Playing definitive edition on the classic mode it took me atleast 30 tries. Then the turret mission zoinkies....
Or maybe I did try it 20 years ago but didn't think it was worth it.
great video!
I have literally Played the Mission in the Remake for 2 and a half hours. AND I'VE STILL NOT FINISHED
Glad you took a break to watch my video. 😊
@@PixelProphecy i got it. Took me 3 whole hours!
Awesome video :D
Thanks! 😁
0:14 Do you hear that high-pitched tone? Or do I have tinnitus?
You're not, I put it in intentionally because analog TVs used to emit this 15625 Hz tone as it's their horizontal scan rate (at least in the PAL broadcast system).
@@PixelProphecy That is 'attention to detail' to the nth degree!
Pixel Prophecy
You are scaring me....
Ive always been really fond of this mission and its the ones setting it up beforehand. I remember when i first played the mission in question. I was in awe as id never seen earlier era representation of racing in gaming at that time. I still really like doing this mission wen i occasionally plat through it. Once you get it down to a fine art you can be an absolute vintage sick c×nt beast
I actually remember being quite good at this mission when I was a kid. Playing this mission on the DE on classic difficulty makes me wonder how I ever managed to do it to begin with
Who made the amazing TV and PC models?
And OMG the race track segment, your editing is on point. Great video Enjoyed it a lot!
Thank you so much! The TV I bought from Turbosquid (www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/sony-trinitron-kv-13tr28-1995-3d-1564778 ), as well as the PS2, but the PC I modeled mostly myself, only the lamp and desk organizer in that scene aren't mine :)
@@PixelProphecy Amazing work, BTW I did my first ever Ludum Dare two months ago after binge watching all your post mortems, so thanks for inspiration and great content.
fun fact: all ai drivers had names of members of deathmetal bands
😮🤘
Yeah I was struggling with this as well, after 5 or 6 attempts I just turned the tire grip up to max which made the race quite easy as the car became much more controlable
Wieder mal ein sehr aufwendiges Video! Toll gemacht. Hab Mafia nie gespielt.

I just came back from playing the remake version of that level. wanna give a a applause to those who grew up with the OG and manage to beat the OG version of the stage.
it took me 2 years in remake, so 1 hour doesn't sounds that bad.
I raged at te remake version and am horrified to know it was worse in the original
It is hard
I swear comment's like this are so stupid lol
Glad you enjoyed it! I haven't played the remake yet, I need to distance myself from the original a little longer first 😅
the secret was to release the gas on the curves.. My dad who played lots of F1 games taught me that and next try I beat it.
Yeah I found it very easy also. And actually alot of fun, if u know racing lines then its very basic
Imagine some other hypothetical game. It introduces itself as being one thing then becomes something different 5 missions in, and this novelty mission has completely stopped you from playing the rest of the game.
Yes it is that bad. Car pulling me left and right for no damn reason
I just found about your channel and I'm really impressed. Thank you for putting so much effort to entertain us by making these high quality videos.
Glad you enjoy it! And thank you for watching and commenting! 😊
Ahahahah, cool video, thanks)
Fev days ago, I tried Mafia remaster on ps5, and faced with tis mission on classic difficulty.
As form me, it was much harder, than on non-patched version of the Mafia from my childhood...
Maybe you can remaster this video with remastered mafia? :D
Oh nice idea! 😊
Next vid when
i just realized that the very thing u modeled you used here! bravo!
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
I’m 14 it only took 20 tries and all of my brain functions

I credited all the music in the video in the credits roll at the very end :)
@@PixelProphecy ok thanks
Also, keep it up with all the great music. Love jazz.
Thanks for watching. I hope you managed to beat the race and finished the game!
Is the unpatched version harder than patched extreme race?
I think it was, yes :)
Fun fact, mafia has some pretty good driving physics for the time but driving on keyboard is a pain.
Wow.. just wow! Absolutely fantastic and engaging video! I had some great laughs at your 'top gear' style track description .. the easter eggs 'pony' and other were great.. renders were mind blowing.. you really transported me back to my 2002 gaming era too! In the definitive edition, it took me like 20 tries on hard mode. Shit is Ridiculous!
If you use the shortcut and reset your car immediately it counts as a lap. I used that cheat as a baby child to skip this mission.
Will you try mafia 2 remastered version?
Probably. I am also curious about the Mafia 1 remaster! :)
@@PixelProphecy Remake you mean : ). You could make some detailed comparison videos.....
@@samfkt I will definitely play it and record my play-through. I won#t promise anything beyond that 😅 Then again, I never plan my video topics far ahead... ;)
