Down here in Australia, we have yet to come to terms with our colonial history. We have the oldest continuous civilisation, which we should celebrate, but it's hard to celebrate until the truth of the colonial past is known. Indigenous people are statistically more likely to go to jail than University. The fix for these inequalities is massively complex, and people like Briggs and the notable indigenous people referred to in that song have succeeded in spite of the racism and inequalities baked into our country.

The australian government tried to remove all of the children born of mixed parentage, taking them to missions where they were forced to work hard. Many grew into jobs, but their wages were with-held in a paternalistic debacle. A class action was put through the courts a few years ago, the people won and were given a small amount of money,(shameful) because the gov't couldn't afford to pay up properly, they would have gone bankrupt. With those who were very light skinned, some were adopted out to white families. It was not very long ago, in the 1970's if I got it right, that the gov't finally stopped such an inhumane policy. One of my relatives had her children removed and died very young, from the heartbreak. Some of the kids ran away and made it home, a lot were stuck, not knowing their own family, their language or even where they were from. Land does not belong to individuals, the people belong to their home country, so that is even worse in a big way. The movie "Rabbit Proof fence" tells some of the story.

Gotta say I’m not a fan of this. The techno music. The rap. It takes away from the deep deep message that Archie Roach conveyed in the original. And this one ignores so many of the poetic verses Archie wrote. The only other version which comes close is Paul Kelly doing it live. Gave me goosebumps.
