The Non-Canon Expert looks at Anakin Skywalker's thoughts immediately before and after his death in Episode 6, explaining how he questioned whether he deserved to learn how to become a Force Ghost.

This is why I love Anakin as a character. He never joined the Sith to seek power for himself. He wanted to help others like his mother and wife. And I like that upon his death he accepts that despite his redemption he is still flawed and doesn't feel he was fully redeemed. But it's that very feeling that proves he was. And one of his first thoughts is the ability to see his children even after death.
Still did some pretty horrible shit in the 21 years before he met Luke again.
@@matthewsmith1779 And that's why he felt beyond redemption and undeserving of immortality. But him accepting that and expecting to die and fade away was a huge part of why he did deserve it.
Matthew Smith you got to remember though darth Vader and anakin aren’t the same. I mean yeah they have the same body brain and heart but anakin definitely has a personality discorder where darth Vader is on the right and anakin is on the left.
Plus, Anakin lusted after power too much.
As a Sith he didn't help others. He had tortured and murdered loads of people.
Anakin: You sure I killed a lot people?

You know what's incredible about the story. How obi-wan was able to forgive Anakin even after he destroyed everything obi-wan loved. That's a real Jedi.
Plus I wonder if Obi-wan ever realized true balance of the force did mean eliminating the Jedi. Not only Sith. If he did then forgiveness would be much easier.
True balance in the Force is elimination of the Dark Side. Saying otherwise is like saying the body is in balance with cancer. Light Side Force-users are like antibodies.

Despite the fact he brought balance to the force the road to get there was full of tragedy and destruction. Yes Anakin destroyed the sith but the cost for the Galaxy was pretty high and it never really fully recovered. The fact that Anakin would question whether he deserved to become a force ghost shows his progression as a character, he is no longer selfish and obsessed with his status or quest for greater power, he's grown up, so much so he is able to question his mistakes and even make the ultimate sacrifice. His life in exchange for the good of everyone. Or maybe Anakins path was the only option to defeat sidious? Perhaps there was no other way? A question for another time..
I think he could have defeated Sidious being a good guy. Maybe the defeat of Sidious would have come by him and Yoda or Windu fighting the emperor together and him defeating him in that way. The fact that he was evil and that he fell to the dark side gave the emperor time to figure out how to clone his body and thus returning in episode 9. Too many variables too really predict what would have happened, but ultimately it was George Luca's decision to introduce Vader as Luke's father in episode 5 and this lead to very limited options.
@@lordsknight4516 The truth is that the Old Jedi Order and the Old Republic both needed to fall in order for something better to arise in place of them. Luke’s new Jedi Order 2:30 is a big improvement over the old one, they allow attachments (marrying and having kids) they teach people how to channel their feelings so that they don’t go over to the dark side, and they don’t involve themselves in the petty politics of the New Republic. I don’t know much about the New Republic but I hope that it’s a lot less corrupt and that it functions better than the old Republic.
@jmwilliamsart new republic was same as the old with people still seeking their own interests. But in Legends, new republic did try to fix the flaws and wasn't idiotic dumb like Disney version. Actually when down fighting and evolving during Yuuzhen vong invasion.
Great reminder that Anakin and Obi-Wan were brothers. Obi-Wan spend many years blaming himself for Anakin's fall and here recognized that, perhaps, he could have done more

I think that is mostly due to them trying to preach excessively and garner twitter points via committee, rather than just letting the cook make a good stake to sell at the steakhouse to make customers happy. now granted I'm not even sure they selected good cooks (Mandalorian excluded) at the moment.
I disagree. I have only read bits and pieces of both cannon and legends the rest has been filled with videos and the like for both. Neither is better than the other in my opinion. Cannon at least for now feels like it understands the feeling of star wars better (high republic excluded for now) this is when Disney doesn't but in which it doesn't seem to do much in terms of books. Legends had no rules it just kinda did whatever the heck it wanted to with the one exception I can actively think of being the massive collaboration for the clone wars books and comics. This is not a bad thing as it allows for a large amount of creative freedom but it also makes it so where many things don't feel like stars wars at least not to me anyway. Cannon exists with a benefit of hindsight and legends had much more to experiment with.

The question of whether Anakin deserved to become a force ghost or not is one that I have mixed feelings on. If the Prequels show us anything, it is that Anakin's life was a hard one, where fate had truly stacked the deck against him. Born a slave, his first moments of true freedom became wrapped up in the unhealthy dogma of the Jedi as well as being fed to Palpatine practically on a silver platter. His life is one of manipulation and cruel twists of fate. Then as Darth Vader, he committed unspeakable acts, what we'd call war crimes as well.
The tragic hero traded one type of slavery for another. I guess I ultimately agree that he deserved some kindness for his destruction of the Emperor

I never agreed with them changing from Sebastian Shaw to Hayden Christensen at the end of the film. Afterall, Luke didn't know what Anakin looked like as a young man.

It's strange that the novel suggests there's nothing after death in star wars for non force users or individuals who don't manage to become force ghosts. We actually know that there is a netherworld, where all individuals go and either they really disolve in the force or retain some consciousness, which the latter is more propable. So even if Anakin didn't accept Obi Wans offer, he'd still exist in some form in the netherworld.

a funny sidenote, if we are to say the new films are the same timeline/multiverse. we all know of the haldo maneuver. now how many X-wings did the Rebel Alliance bring to the Battle of Endor to attempt to destroy the death star? thousands? now every single one had a hyperdrive engine (debunks the too complex or expensive narrative there), what if they strapped an autopilot to the hyperdrives instead, nothing complex, just jump at the target control circuit, drop out after X time, do a 180 and do it again at the target. Hmmm, so the haldo maneuver was a one in a thousand thing, no more so than dropping a bomb down a tiny exhaust port, hmmmm, eventually one of the things will take out the death star, no need to even risk the lives of a large Rebel Alliance fleet, no more Palpatine, Vader, or luke if they even bothered to try to lower the shields around the death star resulting in Luke being on the thing. it breaks laws of hyperspace lanes in StarWars, not just storylines, so meh, I consider the Disney films fan-fiction more than George Lucas canon.
@@Zarcondeegrissom hyperspace ramming did not destroy the first order ship, just heavy damage, the first order scuttled it after the ram, meaning you would just destroy like one small compartment

Anakin Skywalker would also help Cade Skywalker, his great great great grandson, warning him of the danger of the dark side. Even in death, Anakin helps members of his family.

Anakin/Vader may have died heroically. It still doesn't make up for the atrocities that he committed.
It's merciful. Within the context of Justice, Mercy is giving someone better than what they deserve, either because of their character or for the potential of better character. Criminal Rehabilitation is the best example. In countries where rehabilitation is the focus of the justice system, sentences are often much shorter than what would be an appropriate punishment. Just because somebody deserves worse doesn't mean that it's wrong to give him something better.

@@jeffreyconner2937 So? The point is he'd make it up if given the chance. It's not like becoming a Force Ghost means he gets to live in a Ghost pleasure palace. He's going to "live" on knowing that the best he can do is to apologize to those he can come in contact with. (In this case, Luke easily forgave him whereas Leia chewed him out and only came to a Luke's Anakin vs. Vader compartmentalization several years later.) Overall, you have to understand some people are more forgiving than others and that level of forgiving may seem irrational at best. It's cause at the end of the day, Humans aren't rational beings. If we were, we would be organic machines.

First off great to see you doing vids again. Now to my small gripe. Hayden should not have been remastered into that force ghost to replace Sebastion Shaw. That was always BS and it crapped on the actor. You don’t die and become young. He died in his 60s he should have stayed that way.
Now the Force Ghost situation. How does Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, then eventual Luke & Leia how do they just learn it without going on this ELABORATE quest like Yoda did in Clone Wars? There have been many other Force Ghost throughout Star Wars that achieved this state including some Sith without a quest, but we will stick to the movie for this.
How did Qui-Gon achieve this state in the first place without a quest and told Yoda he had to go through a quest to do it? Are we going to just say HE BELIEVED IN THE LIVING FORCE .. THATS WHY? 😂 Even Han Solo was a Force Ghost ... make it make sense! 😂

To be fair at least when it comes to Qui-Gon Jinn from the time of his death to the start of the Clone Wars he was training in the netherworld of the Force. As for everyone else as far as canon makes it out to be you are correct. Disney canon lacks consistency.
I always believed it represented Anakin's appearance before Darth Vader was born. Vader is gone leaving only Anakin.

If Force rejuvenates when redeemed then Hayden Christiansen should have been remastered as well in that Darth Vader suit when dying in Luke’s arms. That also goes back to my consistency gripe to. LoL
Like I said it all fiction. We can believe how this all goes so I am not going to say who is wrong or right.
What I do know is an actor and his credit sort of got crapped on to accommodate this change and the original 3 trilogies should have been left untouched IMO.

It would have been nice if this was elaborated on with a series, novel, comic, etc etc. If there is one I need to check it out. Even with it’s still does not quote satisfy why Yoda had to go all over the Mayberry bush with this crazy quest and then after the fact he just can show others some praying techniques that can teach them how to reach this Force Ghost state without leaving the comfort of their living rooms. LoL

So something I don't understand much. Why would Anakin as a manifested force ghost look like he does when he's young if he technically was redeemed only a short while before he died? Obi Wan died as an old man and he never appeared young as a force ghost.

Darth Vader did not deserve this at all but Obi Wan gave him a second chance anyway because he proved himself capable of being good, moments before his death.

Maybe being a force ghost allowed him to try and be a father for Luke and Leia. I know that Leia refused to speak and was unable to see him again. It is good that he became a force ghost. He did loads of evil things that cannot be justified in any way. Yeah he wanted to protect his wife but he was committing genocide.

This was one of those things that as I get older makes less sense. It's like if Hitler's second in command shot him towards the end of the war and forgive him. 1 good deed at the end should change all the stuff prior.

He didn't deserve to become a force ghost. He just traded his attachment to Sidious for an attachment to Luke. These are not Jedi qualities. He also committed several genocides.
He wasn't really attached to Sidious. He was brainwashed and groomed by him. Taking advantage of his attachments and compassion by giving him visions of Padme dying to bring him closer to the dark side. Power for himself was never the cause of Anakin's downfall it was his compassion and attachment. As we've seen in Vader comics and stories Vader consistently thought about killing Sidious and take his place. He finally did kill him but as Anakin and to save his son who despite all of Vader's evils knew he could be redeemed which Obi-wan also realized.
