It baffles me that so much micro management happens with James LaBrie's vocals, and yet Mike Portnoy can do some really nasally backing vocals and cringeworthy growls, and that gets through perfectly fine. IMO LaBrie is a far better singer than Portnoy, and yet they're so picky here, especially with James' vocals on Forsaken.

It makes sense, lead vocals should always be top notch. Backing vocals just need to fit in the mix, less important to be perfect
If they kept every first-take, it would sound like a mess. Its not micromanaging, its just being a good musician and striving for the best take
