Burlington is great for exactly what you intended. I would also recommend Kohl's. It is is bit nicer and more expensive but you can find good clothes without having to be at a department store.

You should compare prices with Macy's (a major American department store) to see how great those deals are in Burlington Coat Factory. Macy's would be the equivalent of GUM I think, very iconic in America.
Good choice on Burlington. if you're careful which it seems you were, you can get great quality at a very good price. Bought my gf a Calvin Klein (yes, it was real, not a knock off) scarf at Christmas for a very marked down price. you chose well.

Mostly true. I've been to NYC Macy's and can say most of GUM stores is more expensive.
I never actually went into any GUM store. Only got ice cream.
