- Pikmin 4 is here! And I'm recording my playthrough so I can chronicle my thoughts and reactions as they happen!
Featuring not one but two days for completely clearing up the 3rd area, which still hosts a slew of surprises. But the second day is particularly tranquil, a nice reprieve from the chaotic adventures that have surrounded it, and definitely clinches it as my favorite area in the game.
Music used at the dedication at the end is an excerpt from "Concerto pour ondes Martenot, 1. Andante - Allegro Moderato" composed by Marcel Landowski.

Fun lil optical illusion/potential future Mandela Effect: The creature is called the ‘Snowfake Fluttertail’, but your brain tricks you into reading and saying “Snowflake Fluttertail” (like it possibly just did again haha).

The absolute sheer ear at 41:30 when you heard that falling sound because you thought it was something else. You stopped in your tracks to prepare for the worse, not even saying one word, and your voice of relief afterwards when knowing it wasn't a wraith. To be fair I got scared there too. XD
Fun Fact: the Pikmin's flowers are color coordinated by game of introduction:
Red, Yellow, Blue = White.
Purple, White = Magenta.
Rock, Wing = Purple.
Ice, Glow= Yellow.
(I was waiting to say this until Scruffy found all the Pikmin colors)
It’s also cool how the flower color is based on the mixing of colors between each group of pikmin (all the primary colors make white, black and pink make purple, and… well I’m not so sure if it works out with the last pairing 😅)
The colors are actually based on what colors the Pikmin flower comes in in real life: White, Pink and Purple. this might be why they were hesitant on making a Pikmin 4(they don't come in yellow)@@ducko8350

19:48 as a confirmation to this statement, when I played this I accidentally did kill an enemy while it was frozen and when you collect everything else the timer stops anyway (having a gold medal since you're missing some points). If you finish with enough seconds that add up to at least the amount of the corpses you didn't carry back, you still get platinum
Needless to say, enemies that don't leave corpses behind (such as the jellyfish) don't matter if you freeze them or not.
So in theory, if freezing an enemy saves you more (non-multitasked) seconds than it'd take you to carry its corpse back, freezing enemies could be the genuine high scoring strategy.

@@PrincessFelicie Actually, it's pretty much always worth it. You don't just save time by not having to carry a corpse, you also get free nectar from every shattered enemy. This lets you can flower a significant portion of your pikmin for even more time saved.

Random note but it makes sense they don’t move each grape individually in 4 since in 3 they were using it as food and only needed the berries but it’s a “treasure” in 4 which means it needs to stay in mint condition for its value.
Scruffy! I get the chance to write a paper on the intersection of insects and media and a large part of that is due to watching your videos on Pikmin 4! Your enthusiasm for the detail in the game (especially the Piklopedia) made me aware of just how often video games take inspiration from the natural world... thank you so much! :D

The paint tubes are all the Pikmin colors, and the amount used is how long they've been in the series.

Ah yes, the patented Scruffy method to explore water areas : get out your blue, ice and rock pikmin, then leave ice and rock on the shore. Also, when you're farming red pikmin, make sure to keep one blue with you so flowers can turn blue =)

I work from home, and Scruffy's upload time happens to usually time with the "post-meeting work in isolation" part of the day. It's become my routine to open RUclips to put something on, and my favorite is when I'm greeted with a Scruffy video.
18:20 Scruffy, if you do freeze and shatter an enemy the time bonus can in fact bring you back above the threshold for platinum (like you guessed at the end)
Yeah but at the end it tells you you're missing an enemy and you didn't finish it 100% even if you technically got platinum sooo. I'd rather just do it the normal way
High-key, whatever remix of the end of day results you made for giving oatchi the final superbuff should be in the next smash. Loved the energy!

1:02:48 absolutely adore this old Dragon Ball Z style remix of the hub song, the extra effort scruffy puts in his videos are so charming
They never tell you this directly, but purple pikmin instantly break out of bubbles, even faster than ice pikmin. They also instantly weigh down floating enemies like in pikmin 2. They're no longer able to stun and able to be scared, however they now have a massive area of effect when stomping instead. They are once again good fighters, unlike in pikmin 3.
The fact that he went into that cave twice just to get his winged pikmin some friends is very wholesome
I find it fun and amusing that you can start to identify enemies just by their instruments. Adds another layer of enemy recognition to this game!
Oh man I never thought I would be so excited about the next episode of a let's play in 2023. Oh man I'm pumped.
I'm so happy that the Winged Pikmin finally has some friends. I'm sure they're very happy now. I need someone to make an animation of that moment!

It's been a hot, humid summer over here... The Serene Shores look like something out of a dream right now. Enjoying some tasty fruit on an uncrowded beach... Going for a nice walk and digging through the shores for buried trinkets and treasures... Sadly, it's been raining lots here, and the beaches are always full of garbage and heaps of seaweed! Hmm. Maybe if I had some Pikmin of my own, I could do a nice job tidying up the shore. Though even I can't fend off something as ravenous as a seagull! And with so many sand crabs... Maybe that's not such a good idea, after all.
I love how characteristic White Pikmin are this time around. So small - even for a Pikmin! - and just the slightest bit crazed in their rapid movements. Which is fitting, considering how their ultimate attack strategy is to drag their aggressors down with them. While any Pikmin losses should be avoided, there is something satisfying to be seen with these ones biting back just as hard in their final moments. Sadly, seems like they're so rare that creatures will just wolf them down with reckless abandon, not quite associating the white color with the severe bellyaches they're experiencing...
(By the way, now that Every Pikmin is Here... the Glow Pikmin have notably differently-shaped flowers than their more... "corporeal" counterparts. I wonder if that's to note just how unique they are.)
This coming out at the same time as a video about Oatchi from the offical Nintendo channel was neat timing.
i havent even watched the video yet but YAY!!!!!! WHITE PIKMIN ARE BACK!!!!!!!! definitely one of, if not the best pikmin type imo.. theyre so cute!
the amount of glow seeds you get from night expeditions is based off of how many glow pikmin you get, so make sure to make as many glow pikmin as possible

Unironically I discovered your channel through this playthrough and have watched through every single part this far (me being asleep for parts notwithstanding), it's been a lot of fun and one of those unique playthrough experiences seeing somebody so passionate and in depth about a game. Please keep going! This game and series have been fantastic.
Second episode of Scruffy seeming to not realize that he can keep his pikmin from shivering by having them climb onto Oatchi. 😅

Fun fact, iridescent ammonites are actually made of the original mother-of-pearl from the shell! The iridescence is made by organic compounds separating the aragonite shell material into tiny plates that refract light; usually, the organics decay and the tablets fuse and convert to chalky-white calcite, or the shell gets dissolved and replaced over time by another rock, but if the ammonite shell is buried in densely-packed, low-oxygen mud, then both the organics and the aragonite are preserved and the mother-of-pearl can survive for millions of years in the rock.
Something you should definitely try out is changing your character to look like some of the NPCs you've rescued, they give special dialogue if you look like them
funny enough i believe if you fail a dandori challenge there’s an option to ask dingo for help (in which he tackles everything with bomb rocks or something) just to mark it complete in the area map

I agree! I watch them right when they come out xD though I understand the need for breaks between uploads, I just want to watch the next one right away when I'm finished!!
@@skyeplant4373 i like the breaks between uploads honestly. i also wanna watch the episodes daily but i love how scruffy slowly takes the time to appreciate the game. i never noticed half of the details he's been pointing out about the game in my own playthrough and i feel that the days in between the uploads gives more time to let the videos settle in before the next one is uploaded

Only Scruffy could just, on a whim, make a dbz style variation on the post-cave music.
Haven't watched this episode since I just got Pikmin 4 yesterday and I want to finish the game myself before seeing anymore of your playthrough.
But I just want to say THANK YOU for making these, they always brighten up my day. All your videos are great, I'm just particularly enjoying these because of how chill they are and how nice it is to see you play the game the way you want to and having fun with it.
Once I finish Pikmin 4 I'll come back and watch this and whatever other episodes are out, thanks again!!
i hope when you read through the treasure log you observe the treasures. some are pretty standard but some have actions you can do and some just have fun details youd normally never see - i think the contemplation station and a few other ones similar to it have details on the bottom which are cool to see

I did the freezing thing, not on this Dandori Challenge but another one, and I can confirm that you can STILL get a Platinum while shattering something.
As you predicted: if you collect everything on the map and end with a Gold, the time bonus can still take you to Platinum.
In fact, given how long it takes to carry some enemies back to base, the 1-10 point losses can work out to be WORTH IT for the score.
One thing I really want to note, when carrying something that increases a Pikmin type population like a corpse, you can tell what type will get the spoils because the weight number will change color to whatever type it’ll give Pikmin of. This extends to the pellets, the color doesn’t matter in 4 as long as the type you want to get Pikmin of is carrying the pellet, the pellet just cycles between what color Pikmin you both have an onion for as well as have active on the field (I.E. it’ll just stay yellow if you have Yellow, Rock, and Ice out but only have the Yellow onion), but again, the pellet color does not matter in 4
It does matter a bit, if the pikmin that carries the pellet is the same color as it, then it will produce more sprouts than if it was any other color. (I tested it out with my ice pikmin before I got the icy onion)

You may be thinking the Idle Counter is a waste of resources, but it is very beneficial for Dandori Battles, as well as taking the guesswork out of when to use Idler's Alert. It's cheap too,
I think that incident in the second episode made you too paranoid about running out of materials in caves, it usually never happens unless you go directly into a cave right after landing while broke, there are respawning dirt holes in every area so you can always get 20-40 before doing a cave. I never ran out once despite buying everything I could afford until I bought all the gear, you just had a bit of bad luck.
They're this cute detail in the Piklopidia where if you engage and get close to Moss as Oatchi then some cute happens with Oatchi's eyes.
It's been proven Oatchi will do that to any hostile creature not just Moss. You didn't see the later Pikmin 4 Mythbusting episode did you.

ice-cross course has to be by far the hardest dandori challenge in my opinion. It took me so many retries to platinum it.

I once accidentally froze an enemy without thinking in a dandori challenge, and even though it wasn't platinum at the end of the run, I got bonus points for time that brought me up to a platinum score afterwards which was nice!

Definitely watch out for Water Dumples in particular on night missions. They're some of the biggest offenders for Pikmin loss in my experience.

Pikmin won't Shiver while they are riding on Oatchi. so if you're dealing with the crunch of the cold, riding on Oatchi will help

I like to imagine Scruffy (or otherwise the player) likes to sit in their cabin in the Beagle getting ready/trying to doze off while listening to the conversations below,
...Or maybe, everyone's talking to each other in each other's cabins.
Hell, what if the player has like, a speech disability that makes them struggle with forming coherent sentences or turning thoughts into words, but able to at LEAST speak short phrases like "Copy that!" and "Sure"?
Also, I can totally imagine the player being promoted into like, a Rescue Corps. General, alongside the pilot, leader, etc.
Or maybe you'll replace the current leader's role, and she becomes just an administrator, or mission director...? Needs more discussion!
The color of a pellet doesn't actually matter in this game, it depends on what type of pikmin is carrying it like with creatures

Hey Scruffy! Sorry if this comment is late, but frozen enemies won't get added to your point total, but they will still count as a collected enemy and give you a platinum medal if you get everything else.

I like to think of pikmin 4 as a uncanon alternative universe. Instead of it being the Canon universe
Only blue and ice pikmin follow you into the water, no need to dismiss, they just sigh and become idle automatically.

If you freeze and destroy an enemy in a dandori challenge, you can't collect it anymore and the challenge will end when everything else is collected. The time bonus can be used to make up for missed points for a platinum, though, and it doesn't affect your rank in any other way.
The Horned Cannon Beetle is indeed the Armored Cannon Beetle from the first game.
In gameplay, yes. In lore, no. It’s an invasive species that interbreeds with the Armoured Cannon Beetle, putting it at risk of extinction both through polluting the gene pool and killing Armoured Cannon Larva in its territory.
@aaroncampbell586 Read carefully, it was orignally misidentified as an adult armored cannon beetle. The orignal cannon beetle in one is also described as invasive, it was assumed to the be the adult form of the larva and thus was called an Armored Cannon Beetle, then in 4 they realized the larva and beetle were two different species of cannon beetle.
Its actually a long standing transaltion error fix. In the japaense version the larva introduced in 2 were always meant to belong to native species that the adult invasive species from 1 was threatening.
In the japaense version of 4 the horned cannon beetle has the exact same name as the one from 1 as it was never an issue there.

invasive. Not that the Armoured couldn’t have been invasive themselves, but seemingly they settled into the new habitat and are being challenged by another invasive species in turn themselves

Pikmin 4 Beetle= Species A
Pikmin 4 Larva= Species B
Unless you're riding on oatchi, pikmin that cant swim wont follow you into the water, even if you whistle them to come into the water.

i’ve been struggling to get gold or platinum in ice cross course, turns out freezing the water is completely unnecessary 🥴
Using the ice may not be necessary but using it well can get you some very good times. It massively cuts down on the time it takes to transport most treasures.
