I will say, one thing about the Water Wraith that’s a little less menacing in 4 is the fact you get the cutscene every level he drops down on. There’s something so much more tense and spirit breaking in 2 than just hearing him come down and knowing there and then you’ve been down here too long.
I noticed he was a decent amount slower than in 2, but for that trade off he tended to go back and forth in certain areas, like his AI kinda gate keeps around now, I only managed to make him go a long distance away like once, other than that he was always near me. The other big factor is that cave corridors are a lot wider now, so if he IS chasing you, you can slip past him, meanwhile in 2, if you tried that all your pikmin were gonna be flattened. It's a lot easier to dodge him now as well since your Pikmin (and extension, riding on Oatchi) remove a lot of the coverage your squad would have when following behind you
it feels like they knew he was far less menacing here cuz of pikmin being able to just ride oatchi so they made him do this really stupid thing where if he crushes one pikmin carrying a treasure by association he will crush ALL OF THEM
I had started ignoring Olimar's logs, so I didn't realize the game was telling me the water wraith was going to be in it. So, while the first level was still loading, I was contemplating the name of the cave and how it's engulfed because the entrance was submerged, and only then did I realize things may be about to be bad. Hearing the... unique... music upon entry caused a spike in anxiety that the fiery bulborb only further confirmed as appropriate. But, I didn't *know* the water wraith was actually going to be there (because I skipped reading), so I was in frenzied denial until the whistling happened. Never thought they'd actually bring that boss back. Fun(?) fact: the AI is better in one way now: it understands how to turn. So you cannot smash your pikmin up against a wall or in a dead end and expect them to escape being steam rolled the way you can in Pikmin 2.
The first time I played this cave, I was so scared of running into this guy that I outright speedran every floor. Somehow, I went fast enough that it never showed up until the boss fight with it on the last floor.

The water wraiths entry in this game when you first encounter it implies that purples are so dense that they can emit gravitational waves by just hitting the ground
I think the submerged castle music slowly fading in to signify when the wraith comes is the best thing they've done out of all of the caves. I don't think I could ever match how much anxiety and anticipation I felt as I heard it clearly while I still had treasure left on the floor

Fun fact: Englufed castle is designed using recreations of the parts Pikmin 2 uses for Submerged Castle, with each floor using parts from it's Submerged counterpart. This means it's possible to have played the exact layout of Engulfed Castle in Pikmin 2, with the only differences being the items and enemies.
I was a young teen when Pikmin 2 came out, but the submerged castle still makes me break out in a cold sweat. I panic only in my head, like that SpongeBob meme.
The way the water wraith makes Pikmin 2 into a horror game is the reason the submerged castle is my favorite dungeon in Pikmin 2 ... tho it might be because I only started playing the series when I was a teenager, so it wasn't a childhood trauma
I feel like the engulfed castle is a lot easier when you're riding on oatchi because all of your pikmin are all in one place, and no one is left behind as opposed to walking on foot and having a few pikmin lagging behind and getting into danger.
