Pikmin 2 Sound Effect Trivia

- I'm back for another dissection of Pikmin 2! This time I'm explaining 7 points of trivia about the sound effects in the game using a raw dump of internal sounds. I'll cover the voice of Pikmin and how you can achieve it, unearth some inside info on the chirps and calls of beasts, and even engage a very tenacious Gatling Groink in a soundalike contest. I hope you find it interesting!
I couldn't have found how to extract these sounds without the help of my friend Espyo; you can find his RUclips account here:
/ srb2espyo
Instructions on extracting the sounds and more cool notes about the innards of Pikmin 2 can be found here:

Espyo and I edit on Pikipedia, your one-stop wiki for everything Pikmin. If you ever need a Pikmin question answered, look no further!

I also used some sounds from other Nintendo games in this video, thanks to the help of The Sounds Resource, a site dedicated to extracting sounds from video games. Give the site a once-over if you ever need some video game foley!

The Pikmin are actually voiced by Hajime Wakai. Except for Winged Pikmin, who are voiced by Atsuko Asahi.
Ok
@@artofajax7199 cool o never knew
Fun fact: Hajime Wakai and Atsuko Asahi are also the voices of Alph and Brittany from Pikmin 3
I love the fact that pikmin noises are actually voiced
so that's why the winged pikmin sound so different
YOU MADE
THE GATLING GROINK

Accept no Substitutions So. not much different
Accept no Substitutions he shouldn't have tortured us like that
Wasn't it always ?
@@oetic5016 it was, I feel like it fits better as a Sniper with the new change he made to it, seeing as how fast it fired, reset, and fired again
It kinda is if you think about it
0:22 i almost had a heart attack upon hearing the gatling groink footsteps.
ikr omg
I didn't even remember what it was bit I heard the noise and tensed up
It would've only been worse if the wind-up noise for the launcher had been present too.
wtf is the gatling groink?

@@grey-sparkWhy would he when "Can I make it worse ?" is the direct followup to "I should make it worse." ?
Gatling Groink learned how to shoot a devastating mortar in a horizontal line and it was all over for the rest of us 😂
9:08 it’s also the sound of the flare in wii sports resort. I recognize it!
I knew I'd heard it somewhere else!
There is one more difference in the sound made by sunshine's Bullet bill, and Gatlin groinks Mortor, one makes you run for your life, and the other makes you leisurely walk away.
DJDonkeys gatlink groink better get to DA choppa and then bullet bills are slow
XD
The Gatling groink makes you leisurely walk away because it’s smaller than a human foot
But he's talking about sounds...
@@lodsska woosh
The pikmin death sound gives me chills,
Have you ever heard the sound of a Norn dying in the Creatures games? Trust me, it's somehow even worse.
Sam Murray what is that?
The Gatling Groink. A rocket-launching goldfish of death.
Yes
Yes
Yes

literally bullet child goldfish in japan
Not going to lie. 11:15 actually made me burst out laughing. I don’t mean “comment ‘lol’ but actually barely chuckle”, I mean laugh full-force for 30 seconds straight. I never thought I would see the missile-launching Groink, but it was amazing.
Lmao
*n y o o m*
That groink went from "inconvient" to "elite sniper"
Easily amused huh

Given that it was two years ago, it was likely that I was up at 2 AM trying to do college homework but getting distracted by RUclips, and at 2 AM everything’s funnier. I still find it funny, though.
BUT the emperor bulblax sound is also a stock sound. I've heard it on the MAD TV show and in some Flash Games

Steamlazer I fricking hate myself
You're a stronger person than I, spending that much time with the Gatling Groink. I haven't touched Pikmin for years and just the sounds it makes give me anxiety.
The sudden cut at 11:21 before the rockets hit you again killed me 🤣
The trivia was nice, but what really sold it for me was the drawings you made throughout! Also, your Mario version of Emperor Bulblax is surprisingly adorable!
I know that some sounds are pitched up and down by minor percentages just so the sound doesn't become stale to the listeners ears, that's probably why the certain sounds don't have set pitches outside of the game
Good observation! The indeterminate-pitch sounds I described in the video appear to be the only ones in the sound dump. I feel like that may partially be because the Bulbmin and Waterwraith were late additions to the game. The birdsong might have always been that way, to keep the sound from becoming stale.
0:22 activated my fight or flight response
Jay Sarna flight! Flight!
no no no no no no no no no no no no no
sound at 9:07 sounds a lot like deku link's bubble shot in majoras mask too
Ya beat me to it.
Without actual proof I will say that it definitely sounds *exactly* like it. Vary likely it is
It sounds exactly like it, just cut off. The majoras mask "version" is somehow longer.
this is not a name Yesh!
@Farflung Yup, I think so
it sounds like a hawk screech
Imagine if Gatling Groinks could fire 10x farther and without an angle...
Wait, isn't that Gatling Groink/Sunshine Bullet Bill sound the same one used for Deku Link's bubbles being fired in Majora's Mask? I think the bubble also adds a reversed and sped up version to end it, though
How do you have this little subscribers?
Definitely a sub
Idk!? ;(
Its because he doesn't do mainstream games.
No he's just extremely new, If he keeps this up he'll start reaching millions just like SpawnWave is right now, When I started watching SpawnWave he only had 4,000 subscribers, Now he's gone up to 30,000 subscribers in less then half a year! All in all keep supporting Scruffy, He keeps making quality content like this it'll be impossible for this site to ignore him
@@TheGameCreator13 It is very, very cool seeing 5 year old comment threads like this when he now has almost half a million subscribers hahaha
This video was amazing.
I loved your experimenting with the Gatling Groink. I laughed so hard.
Yamato Man!
6:21 BRO!, Glad im not the only one who discovered this before this video existed lmao
8:56 A) I want that to be an actual enemy and B) I want that to be a plushie
Ever since this video, I’ve been noticing various examples of sound effects being repeated in Nintendo games such as the whistle sound effect in Nintendogs+Cats being reused in the gorilla game in 1-2 Switch or the door knocking sound effect in Nintendogs being reused in Super Mario Maker’s Weird Mario door easter egg.
Edit: I’ve also noticed that the baby crying in 1-2 Switch is a stock sound, the charging sound effect in Pikmin 3 is used in the Speed Slice mini game in Wii Sports Resort, and the Museum track in Animal Crossing New Leaf is actually an edited and more detailed version of the song that plays in Luigi’s Mansion while speaking with E. Gadd before using the Ghost Portrificationizer.
8:36 It's when you complete a level
Boardy HI!!
At the end of the first day in Pikmin 3, when he puts the koppad in his pocket, it uses the Animal Crossing pocket sound!
**bullet bill whistle plays**
Me:oh that’s from z-
Scruffy:this is from mario sunshine
Me:ok but it’s also from Zelda ocarina of time when you fire a deku bubble
I’m not wrong tho
It also sounds like the fireworks item from revolt
Wow Nintendo likes to reuse sounds lol
@Red X OMG I MEANT THAT IM REALLY STUPID LOL
but you are
its najoras mask
Yes you are, it's from Majora's Mask, not Ocarina of Time.
SUPER GROINK MAKER
I feel like maybe the armored cannon beetles were supposed to be bosses at some point, maybe midway through development. That's why their death cries are so long.
The Gattling Gronk projectile sound that was also in Sunshine reminds me of the Deku Bubble from Majora's Mask, are the two related at all?
It does sound super similar
The sound at 1:11 always creeped me out, especially when a bunch of them wilted at the same time.
When you go down a sub level and you hear this 0:21
*WHISTLE* *WHISTLE* *WHISTLE* *WHISTLE* *WHISTLE*
_C stick away from the sound_
Another thing about the SFX.
The bird chirping sound in the awakening wood is also used in super mario maker...
I love Pikmin, especially Pikmin 2. I'm actually glad for once that RUclips recommended me a good video.
This is all stuff I could've gone my whole life without knowing, but being the Pikmin fan I am, have stumbled onto your video and was pretty interesting haha
You're forgetting something, Totaka also voices Olimar.
Half of this video is about Gatling groinks
4:57 *has major ptsd attack of remembering this fucker for the first time and having a loud tv*
3:03 It sounds like it would come from the president.
This is a real old video by now so you likely already know this, but while playing pikmin 2 (and having to reset challenge mode levels a LOT) I came to the realization that the armored cannon beetle larvae’s death noise is likely a slowed and pitch-shifted version of the cloaking burrow-nit’s death cry! I don’t know for sure but they sound very similar, so maybe the reason the sound file wasn’t found was because it’s doing a similar pitch-bending maneuver that sounds like the groink/candypop buds do.
Maybe they used the start of the slowed-down cry as the first part of the cannon larvae’s death sound, then followed it up with a different sound effect to get a specific feel? But if you pause the game, then the sound effect doesn’t get overwritten (don’t know if that’s the right word but I think you get what I mean). Either way, super interesting!
i swear i've heard somewhere that the cannon beetle sound is actually the same as a ravenous whiskerpillar dying. maybe these 3 enemies all share the same death sound?
This is one of the most well edited and interesting videos i've ever seen and you have a very bright future ahead of you
6:20 I don't know why I JUST remembered this, but it triggered a memory.
If you happen to play Mario Kart Wii on a Wii and get struck by the lightning item (only the lightning item, not the thundercloud item), if you pause RIGHT when you get struck, you can hear the entire sound effect, just like here. Its way longer and is kind of creepy when not muddied by the other sound effects (of, like. Your character screaming and the kart shrinking sounds)
2:05
ITS GONNA BLOW!
I was a games design university student. I would like you to know that I used a portion of this video during a group presentation to illustrate the point my group was presenting. (As per university policy, a link to this video was also provided as reference.) Not only did we get great marks for the presentation but at the end of all of the presentations, one of the two professors grading me that day asked me directly for the link to the whole video so he has probably seen this video and possibly your others too. He might even include this video in future lectures he gives. I hope this brings you some pride and joy, Scruffy. (And if he sees this, hi Rob! Your lectures are always fun!)
0:21 sound so horrifying it nearly gave me a heart attack
Such an amazing video, you deserve way more subs. Keep up the great work!
11:29 And Here We See Pikmin Migrating For The Winter!
As far as I remember, the sound effect for walking on asphalt/stone in Splatoon is the same sound as walking on stone in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
Also, the cicada sounds in Flounder Heights are the same cicada sounds from AC:NL.
WHat an amazing video! I really liked it! Also, whats the music playing at 7:12
Glad you enjoyed it! That theme is from Nintendo Land: it's when Monita is first introducing you to the park and explaining how it works.
Scruffy Holy crap I thought it was Pushmo
Anyone else notice that Attacking - wScene_0.aw is just a sped-up and pitch-shifted version of Mario's punch attack from Super Mario 64?
The "unused sound" in SM3DW's files may just be that last part of the level clear sound.
You are honestly one of the smartest youtubers I’ve ever seen. I always find myself blown away by your analyses like this!
this is really good, well done
I'm super impressed, wow you definitely should get more views for this, educational and entertaining
11:17
Groink explosive speadshot?
Interesting.
thank you scruffy for this life changing video
These videos are so much fun. Thank you Scruffy for your hard work. I hope we'll get a similar one for P4, because the sounds in this game also seem very interesting. Cheers
Great video man. Pikmin 2 was my favorite childhood game and the sound effects were always one of the most memorable parts of that game for me.
What an amazing video!!!!!! I adore Pikmin 2 and am super interested in sound desire. Very informative, calm, and charming video. I appreciate it so much when the majority of game content seems to be as "attention-grabbing" as possible, to phrase it in a kind way. Thanks for the entertainment!!!
wow... imagine having to talk rrreeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaalllllllyyyyyyyy sssssssllllllllloooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww for half of the voice acting...
About the unused Pikmin sound in Mario 3D World- wasn't there an interview where they wanted to include Pikmin or other franchises as a world in Mario (It Galaxy or M3DW or something) but they decided against it because the gameplay doesnt match the character designs (Pikmin charcters are slender where as mario characters are fat cause you have to jump on them.)
The groink sound might also be the sound used in Pikmin Adventure for pikmin with the whipseed that were thrown and are heading back down, only with the pitch lowered
8:33 that sound could have been used during the course clear fanfare in SM3DW
This is so awesome. I hope you do more videos in this style in the future!
4:48 well, from what I remembered, the water wraith had some low and some higher pitched sounds.
The Waterwraith and bird sounds are probably pitch shifted in real-time so they can be randomly high within a range of pitches. The bird sounds at least might get kinda grating if they sounded the same all game.
The bullet bill/groink mortar sounds a bit like the flare from Wii Sports Resort planes.
It actually does! wow
You are excellent! Your videos are so pleasant! They deserve more views. Please keep making more pikmin content.
You deserve way more attention. Excellent job.
You are so informative, the video game sound resource is a life saver, thank you!!
found this channel way too late, i love your in-depth analysis!
The firing sound is also used in Wii Sports Resort in island flyover when you fire a flare
Man, this video got you a new sub, great work!!
This channel is awesome! My one experience with Pikmin is the game it has in Wii U's Festival Plaza, and yet these videos are fascinating to watch! I'm going to agree with the many other commenters who say you deserve more subs! Just don't let your creativity get burnt out! ;)
CraftyKittyGaming you should really get into the original pikmin games they're insanely fun
From 6:19 to 6:31, it's the sounds the Ravenous Whiskerpillars use, but it's extremely low-pitched, and the pitch is going down even more... Also, did you know that the Emperor Bulblax uses Giant Breadbug sounds but low-pitched as well? Same goes for the Segmented Crawbster using Careening Dirigibug sounds in an extremely low pitch, too.
You want proof? Try recording your battle against the Emperor Bulblax and the Segmented Crawbster, and replay the audio in an extremely high pitch, and see (or rather, hear) what I mean.
that firework whistle sound also sounds close to sound effect in majoras mask, when you shoot bubbles as a deku scrub
Bro turned the gattling groink into a man at legs💀💀💀
we all know the toady bloyster from pikmin 2 has the best sound in the series
8:20 I found the sound affect in the pikmin short, its when the hocotate ship is absorbing nuts and bolts
That was a really well produced video, loved the drawings. Great job, you won a subscriber!
KING HIPPO IS YOUR STYLE???!
@@alexiscolon8946 he is!
I love this! I hope to see more of this content!
Here's another interesting case of sound reuse. The sound that plays when Mario's air meter refills in Mario Odyssey is the same sound as when Inklings fill up their ink capacity in Splatoon 2.
Apparently from what I’ve googled the ones who voice the Pikmin are Atsuko Asahi, and Hajime Wakai. The same people who voice Brittany and Alph in Pikmin 3
for someone who dose foley and sound design for fun, this channel and vid is awesome! youve earnt a sub!
This is so cool, love the vid. U got a new subscriber
Hey,
Great video! I really enjoyed it :)
You should totally do a silly hack video! With stuff like what you did with the gravity in 11:30. That was so interesting and hilarious!
This is awesome. Really cool video!
Nice video, Scruffy, it's really cool and interesting!
You should totally make more of these trivia videos like this!

Oh man, 191 Blue Pikmin?! That's insane compared to what happened in the Submerged castled.
Wh-229 YELLOW PIKMIN?! And here I'd thought you'd never have that many after you drowned 48 of them on a bridge, you *DOLT*
what an awesome video! :D loved how you remade the groink sound! XD

incredible video, Scruffy! This is Wraith from Pikmin Fanon. I'm a fan of your work, and the video was entertaining to boot!
Yay I finally found this channel again!!!
Also they used that same ambiant bird noise in both Mario maker and Mario oddysey
0:36
Sneaky, but I caught that very subtle and obscure jokes. Echo signs around the word "Banks"
I have since I was about 6 thought I was going insane thinking nintendo games used so many similar sounds, thank you for confirming my suspicions. It's been 10 long painful years but better late than never.
This video made me laugh like legit which i wasnt expecting. Youre seriously underated smh u got a sub from me
"A Mario canon-friendly crossover enemy"
...how do you make something non-canon-friendly to this game about a random plumber who is by this point at least like 55 years old jumping around to save a princess from a giant spiky turtle?
The Gatling Groink having its own physics logic for its projectiles, and primarily adjusting using angle actually makes a lot of sense if you think about it, especially when we consider how the projectiles behave with point blank shots. If it adjusted by velocity, then at close range, you'd have way less time to react, plus the sound would get cut off earlier, but by using just angle it would have ridiculously high arcs at close range, so instead I'm guessing it just draws a parabolic path for the shot and makes it follow that path, seemingly with variable speed to make the projectile's flight time rather consistent, based on the behavior seen with the edited range.
