for the record the optic mount for the SCAR DMR is a unity mount it does have the optic sit higher but it allows for a flip up or flip down feature. Instead of the flip to side for the magnifiers
For those who are curious, the thermal sight that showed up at the end of the video is based on the real world Steiner CQT thermal red-dot sight. It's pretty cool, and I believe the first of its kind.
A nice detail concerning the thermal optics, when aiming at a window in game that still has a glass pane on it while using a thermal optic, you can't see out the window nearly at all. Nice detail that I noticed with both the night vision and thermal stuff.
The FTC (flip to center) magnifier optic mount is from Unity Tactical, and is sweet. Also, the extended rail section on the Scar 20 is likely modeled after the Kinectic Development Group rail extensions. Having it lower than the monolithic rail allows you to mount lasers out of the way of optics and such.
I'm not an expert, just commenting what I've seen in other videos, but isn't the first one supposed to be the MG 338? The XM250 is a different thing right?
I always appreciate Johnathan Ferguson the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum's knowledge and insights on gun designs and history. He's such a lovely host for such an amazing series
I kinda want a part 3. More or less about the different platforms of some of these guns. The one that comes out as more unique is the m4/p90 conversion. I've never seen that be a thing on any other gun, it's really alien to me.
Hey Jonathon, Just wanted to let you know that the magnifier set up like that is very much a thing, it's called the FAST™ FTC Aimpoint Magnifier Mount. Just wanted to let you know
Also of note about the AUG folding grip. Its attached to the barrel because the system has a quick-change barrel feature, and the foregrip is where the operator can grab and swap barrels without burning their hands. This is similar to many lmgs where the carry handle is attached to the barrel for the same reason. The HK21 also included in this game has a rectangular protrusion on the right-hand side of the barrel shroud. This is their version of a 'handle' for swapping barrels.
I was drafted in Thailand, which has HK33 in service, and I can confirm that HK33's mag release button is quite too far to reach with right hand's index finger, and it is quite stiff to the point that it is easier to use right hand's thumb to press it. Also, most of us (draftees) didn't do "HK slap" when reload, but we just did pull charging handle back and down from bolt hold open notch and release it without homing it to forward position.
The hybrid sight setup that allows you to push the magnifier straight down over the rail is the Unity Tactical Flip to Center (FTC) mount. They are pretty awesome
Regarding the thermal-imaging magnifier on the hybrid sight... Making a thermal imaging camera work through a lens would require one that's transparent in infrared. The problem is, there's very, _very_ few materials that are properly transparent in infrared. I personally only know of one such material; germanium. It's used in the lenses of infrared cameras. I'm not fully familiar with all of its properties, but I don't think it makes for a good holographic sight...
14:42 that optic is based off the US army’s Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular (ENVG-B) It uses a fusion of different IFF /infrared imaging. The real thing is t an optic but a whole system of goggles… what you see looks like something from tron. It’s insane
I saw a small documentary about that tech it uses AI and other technology to find outlines in the surrounding apperantly it was originally made for fire fighter to be able to see through thick smoke

I like the idea that if the zombie apocalypse were to happen, people would flood to the Royal Armouries and Jonathan would be like a king of the new society.
The RAAL is the Sig MG338, big brother of the M250, it’s chambered in 338 Norma Mag, designed to be a man portable LMG with range and anti-material capabilities of the Ma Duece.
The hybrid sight is based on the Unity Tactical Flip to Centre magnifier mount. The real world version only works if your red dot is on a riser so you only get a neck weld.
Hey GameSpot, I would love to see Jonathan Ferguson reacting to the weopons of Enlisted. Enlisted is a hyper realistic WW2 shooter and I think they did one of the greatest jobs at modeling the guns.
Unity makes a mount for magnifiers that brings it up and down instead of pushing it off to the side. It's made for the weirdos who like their optics mounted really high instead of at absolute co-witness like a normal person
The magnifier mount in the video is very similar to the Unity Tactical magnifier mount. It keeps the magnifier inboard and is meant to be used with optics that are on a riser or just tall. I have one personally, and it's pretty neat and convenient.
I know it has said before and others have requested it, but a future Killzone video would be nice or Gears of War. Not that I don't appreciate all these videos with Jonathan, but I am getting some CoD fatigue lately.
You know what. My favorite part of him, is when he not just talks about the guns that he saw in the game, but when he actually shows a real gun and explains, what is the difference between the real one and the one that in the game. But when he doesn't show anything, and just talks about the guns, it make me feel bored. I understand that, he maybe don't have all guns from around the world but COME ON, man! Talking does not do the justice here, but the real comparison does. So, like Ironman said in one of the avengers movies: SHOW ME SOMETHING!
The RPK looks like an AES 10B. Too bad the drum doesn't look like a real top loader or rear loading drum magazine. Polymer AK mags without metal feed lips or locking lug don't last very long.
the gun is actually the SIG MG338, which was adopted by USSOCOM prior to the NGSW decision. 300 Norma Magnum as opposed to the 277 Fury used by the NGSW
I guess all those cursed guns broke Jonathan and the crew as the first gun in the video is already ID'd wrong as the XM250 by Jonathan and the Fightlite MCR by the crew
The magnifier at the end does exist in some capacity sans the thermal capability, that is completely fictional, thermal magnifiers do not exist. The magnifier though is relatively new and is called the Unity FAST Flip-To-Center (FTC) and is made to be used with other risers also made by Unity. Those setups using such furniture (without the thermal) do exist in-game as well. A comment I’d like to add about thermals is that I am so glad they’ve gone for the thermal outline approach you’ve seen recently with the new army ENVG’s (thermal outline as a mode isn’t new at all, we’ve had them since 2006 with PSQ-36’s they’ve just been kept hush hush very well for a good while) as opposed to the previous thermal basic solid modes. The effect is definitely the best seen in any game.
So Jonathan is actually incorrect on the RAAL. It's not the XM250, it's the notably larger SIG MG338 firing .338 Norma Mag as opposed to the SIG LMG68/XM250's 6.8x51. This is also why it's visually different to the XM250, it is correctly modelled after the MG338
14:20, Unity makes a mounts for magnifiers to fold them straight down. Pretty sure they are only for Eotech magnifiers. More interesting is the Sight in front- 1P87, Sight made for AK-12 pretty much
14:39 Any experts here to chime in; doesn't glass block thermal cameras because they use infrared, and we _intentionally_ paint glass in infrared paint for home applications (as opposed to weapon sights) for thermal management?
That's the MG338, not the XM250. The MG338 is a .338 Norma Magnum Machine Gun meant for roles replacing weapons in the class of the M240 and M2A1, not the M249 or MK48 like the XM250 is designed for.
You technically arent wrong, it is a flat texture, with a bit of normal mapping and maybe bumb mapping (although this is normally reserved for large objects and environments). Its a way we can create 3D environments on a flat texture to help materials such as woods, stones and some plastics. Will never match actually modelling the wood grain but asking a games artist to do that would be like asking them to put a tooth pick under their nail and kick the skirting board. (also the game engine would really suffer as weapon models are relatively low poly models and we use baking (from a high poly version has millions of polys) down onto the low poly model which is more around a few thousand depending on the weapon. How we get really round looking edges on a non round surface... You wouldnt beable to model grains in a low poly form so it is pointless...
From what I have heard and understand the M-249 and M-240 might jusr be upgraded to the 6.8 mm round witrh just a barrel and bolt change. So they might still have a life still.
That is not the XM250 because this is the mg 338 by sig the XM250 is in 6.8×51mm aka 277 SIG Fury the MG338 is in 338 normal magnum It was proposed for the next generation machine gun program as a replacement for the M2 Browning although I believe it more would suit the role of the replacement of the 240. The other competitor in the program is the general dynamics lightweight medium machine gun. Progress on this program has been outshadowed by the next generation squad weapon program which adopted the XM5 and XM250.
Re Pseudo-monolithic Upper on the MK-20: That's a vague depiction of a Kinetic MREX or maybe a PWS SRX rail extension, it doesn't really look like either one. The purpose would be mounting a laser module on the top rail and have it flush with the rail of the upper receiver, staying out of the way of an optical sight. This can be customized and represented in Escape From Tarkov.
ehh, on the topic of wood texturing. it's been a thing for a while, physics based rendering (pbr, for short). pbr, gives the devs the ability to just say "this thing is stainless steel" without having to model the thing to be stainless steel. from what I understand, a lot of pbr is based on dev consensus of what works best for everything. some studios come up with their own solutions, others take what is already there.
one thing j wanna see him look at (hopefully in another vid) is the FSS Hurricane, which is the AR57. a modified AR-15 platform that shoots 5.7 using a P90 magazine mounted to the top of the gun.
Love the content and Jonathan is an awesome dude. I wanted to add some information to the rail system post gas block on the SCAR. The lower profile height here is intended as a platform for LAM/PEQ/MAWL devices that would normally interfere with optics or sight profile if mounted on the same plane as the monolithic rail. I have a PEQ-15 on mine for NV IR laser aiming. It sits down out of view and decreases issues you would normally get if you were to side mount those type of devices (as used to be the trend).
There are a few mounts for magnifiers that let you flip it up and down. Meant for guys running really high risers on their optics for shooting under nods
Huh, never thought I'd see the day where I know a tid bit of gun knowledge a firearms expert/keeper doesn't. I'm sure someone has already said it but I believe the "SCAR" magnifier setup uses a FAST FTC magnifier made by Unity or something of a similar design.
"Vomiting cartridges all over the floor". Ah, yes, the ever popular Bullet Fountain mode, first seen on the Roth-Krnka M.7, a guaranteed crowd pleaser!
>>We don't specialize in guided missles Wouldn't they fall under "Artillery" and hence fall under the expertise of Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries?
"A pane of glass with prevent thermal imaging" Actually that's true in the game. I finally tried out one of the thermal scopes, and I had to break a window to be able to see through it with the sight. It was really cool, actually, lol.
The “flip to center” is made by Unity. It’s for optics that run their FAST riser. Since the main optic is taller, the magnifier can be stowed at the bottom instead of obstructing the peripheral and making the firearm “wider”. As for a thermal magnifier, I’d think that’s just COD logic
The Steyr “HCR” has a lot of weird changes on it that aren’t realistic. Like a new foregrip that can’t be collapsed and the push in safety button being replaced with a small safety switch instead despite the fact that they kept the same god awful trigger mech. The ability to single shot an LMG is kinda pointless, so all you’d be doing with that trigger is pushing it down completely, all the time. Also the bulk of the weapon is made out of plastic. Even regular F88’s all the way up to the latest EF88 has an issue with the plastic around the ejection port becoming warped from the hot brass. You had to cut out the corners of that ejection port to make sure your rounds don’t jam or even slow down which can cause double feeds. So using the same working parts in the same plastic steyr for an LMG that’s going to chew through thousands of rounds in a significantly shorter period than the original, it would jam quickly. Not to mention the drum mag obstructs the magazine release button next to the mag we’ll 🤷🏼♂️
I don't know if this'll be seen, but I really think Jonathon should react to Call of Duty: Ghosts! I know so many people hated it when it came out but in my opinion after playing it in 2023 (Crazy isn''t it?!?!), its definitely an underrated game and the guns in that game especially would be such a treat for Jonathon to do a break down on!

for the record the optic mount for the SCAR DMR is a unity mount it does have the optic sit higher but it allows for a flip up or flip down feature. Instead of the flip to side for the magnifiers
For those who are curious, the thermal sight that showed up at the end of the video is based on the real world Steiner CQT thermal red-dot sight. It's pretty cool, and I believe the first of its kind.
Ahhhh, I knew it looked familiar. I instantly thought of the russian EOTech clone, looks pretty similar.
I wanted to get on for my hog gun, until I realized they were $10,000 🥲
A nice detail concerning the thermal optics, when aiming at a window in game that still has a glass pane on it while using a thermal optic, you can't see out the window nearly at all.

Day 1 of asking for Jonathan to look at stalker series guns and it’s mods
I'm not an expert, just commenting what I've seen in other videos, but isn't the first one supposed to be the MG 338? The XM250 is a different thing right?
they are kinda related but not the same gun, yeah
I always appreciate Johnathan Ferguson the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum's knowledge and insights on gun designs and history. He's such a lovely host for such an amazing series
“We don’t specialize at all in guided missile systems here” *pulls out a guided missile system* his smile when he pulls out the manpad was amazing.
Jonathan has been strangely protected from cursed guns on these MW2 reviews, I fear the next one won't be as nice to him...
I kinda want a part 3. More or less about the different platforms of some of these guns. The one that comes out as more unique is the m4/p90 conversion. I've never seen that be a thing on any other gun, it's really alien to me.
An AUG being called "a vintage piece" really gave me perspective into how stuck in the past my perception of guns is.
Hey Jonathon, Just wanted to let you know that the magnifier set up like that is very much a thing, it's called the FAST™ FTC Aimpoint Magnifier Mount. Just wanted to let you know
Anxious to see Johnathan taking a look at Darktide. The bolter is glorious...
My dad’s poor, poor, Citori… what have you done to it Dave?
Hey can we get him react on a very classic made in Vietnam game called 7554?
They should've called the game "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Too."

Another one?!
I’m speeding home like when I try rush the Radiation Zone looking for the M13,
To get comfy and watch another masterpiece ❤️
Regarding the thermal-imaging magnifier on the hybrid sight...
Making a thermal imaging camera work through a lens would require one that's transparent in infrared. The problem is, there's very, _very_ few materials that are properly transparent in infrared.
I personally only know of one such material; germanium. It's used in the lenses of infrared cameras.
I'm not fully familiar with all of its properties, but I don't think it makes for a good holographic sight...
14:42 that optic is based off the US army’s Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular (ENVG-B)
It uses a fusion of different IFF /infrared imaging. The real thing is t an optic but a whole system of goggles… what you see looks like something from tron. It’s insane
I saw a small documentary about that tech it uses AI and other technology to find outlines in the surrounding apperantly it was originally made for fire fighter to be able to see through thick smoke
Yeah, that hybrid sight setup is a real thing, using an EoTech sight and magnifier and specific mounts. It doesn't have thermal imaging, however
I enjoy Jonathan's insight and commentary so much. He's also just pleasant to listen to.
Is that automatic machine pistol real ?
Looks like something H&K could craft.
Yeah it's pretty much a glock 18c with a chassis kit. Basically turns it into a carbine really
@@christiantorres7866 Wait it’s a glock auto?
@@Salmon_Toastie Yes it is. The gun in game (x13) in its base form is supposed to represent a glock 18c. It looks, named differently cause of copyright. But yes full auto pistols exist with the g18 being a prominent example, as well as burst fire pistols with the example of the Beretta 93r "Raffica"
The first weapon is wrong.
It's the LWMMG in .338 Norma Magnum.

I like the idea that if the zombie apocalypse were to happen, people would flood to the Royal Armouries and Jonathan would be like a king of the new society.
Dont think it would last very long, not like the museum keeps a large stock of reserve ammo, you'd definitely go there to get guns tho
If bo1 or bo2 weren’t done those would be cool to see
The RAAL is the Sig MG338, big brother of the M250, it’s chambered in 338 Norma Mag, designed to be a man portable LMG with range and anti-material capabilities of the Ma Duece.
Basically it's the M240B equivalent to the XM250's replacement of the SAW.
Could you react to the Half-Life franchise's guns?
Small correction here, the raal is not the xm250 but rather the sig mg338
the RAAL is the mg 338 does not fire the 6.8mm round it fires the .338 norma magnum
The hybrid sight is based on the Unity Tactical Flip to Centre magnifier mount. The real world version only works if your red dot is on a riser so you only get a neck weld.
BS
Ha, "neck weld"! Thank you.

I hope Jonathan enjoys doing these videos still. I know we all enjoy them but I don’t want him to get tired of them
I'd love to see him react to Black Ops 2 seeing as that game was considered futuristic but were only like 1 or 2 years away from the setting itself
UNITY magnifier mount has the feature of magnifier going in vertical position rather than pulling it to the left/right side. CC: Jonathan :)

Hey GameSpot,
I would love to see Jonathan Ferguson reacting to the weopons of Enlisted. Enlisted is a hyper realistic WW2 shooter and I think they did one of the greatest jobs at modeling the guns.
Pleeeeeeeease do COD GHOSTS
Unity makes a mount for magnifiers that brings it up and down instead of pushing it off to the side. It's made for the weirdos who like their optics mounted really high instead of at absolute co-witness like a normal person
Thanks for watching you have been shortlisted for our giveaway contest🎁🎁
i want to see what Jonathans take on Warhammer 40k: Darktide is.
I’d love for Jonathan to look at the guns from James Bond nightfire ….. I remember always loving the options in that game as a kid
MWII just came out so it is likely what the algorithm will pick up on as people are searching that game a lot.
@@R17759 Yeah, that has been my assumption too.
So, like Ironman said in one of the avengers movies: SHOW ME SOMETHING!
i think you should show him the empty inspect of the gun. they have updated the inspect animation now.

That hybrid optic is based on something real. I'm just not sure from where. Maybe EOTECH?
For the hybrid sight magnifier. It's called a unity mount and they are very useful. Been around for a couple years or so
Hooray! Luck has found its way to your arms.. message me for your donative 📦🎉🎉
Regarding the swing to center mount of the thermal/magnified optics Unity makes that mount. Look up the UNITY FAST FTC (Flip to Center) mount. 😊
>>We don't specialize in guided missles
Wouldn't they fall under "Artillery" and hence fall under the expertise of Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries?
I don’t know why COD went with Cold War era HK’s. Most armies around the world are now using the 433, 416, G36, and MP5
Interestingly,RPK and RPG-7 are the only guns in the game that retained its actual names.
I think Jonathan would have fun looking at the guns of the Metal Gear games, especially MGSV with its gun customization/building system.
