I prefer when Jonathan talks about sci-fi/fantasy games over "realistic" shooters. There's only so many times he can talk about AKMs or M16 over ten Call of Duties without repeating the same comments. I love hearing about the details of sci-fi revolver compared to real-life Smith & Wesson

I like when he talks about obscure weapons with curious mechanical operations. I didn’t enjoy the Borderlands episode because it was basically 20 mins of ‘this is ridiculous, I have no idea how it would work’ but something like Cyberpunk where he can say ‘well it’s a bit like this, and it *could* work if you did this’ is the most fun

Basically when it's a realistic game, the interest is in what they got right, and what inaccuracies there are. Maybe commentary on unusual or rare firearms (or variants) that might appear).
I still find that very interesting.
Still, I agree that it's a good change of pace to see an assessment of completely fictional weaponry, and about how they might possibly work.

    • @cykeok3525
      @cykeok3525 Год назад +13

@@tommyscott8511 I think that's purely because Gearbox decided to take things a bit too far, an irreverence for reality if you will, though I don't mean it negatively.
Without at least some slight grounding in reality (either in form or in function), there's not much to assess, as was clearly the case with Borderlands weapons.
Even Team Fortress 2's equally zany weapons often have aesthetic form reminiscent of real firearms, which adds interest to the analysis.

yeah i was gonna comment something like this, its a shame they didn't show the Overwatch 1 skin primarily, with the exception being junker queen, (as the Overwatch 1 skins are more indicative of the design ethos which went into creating the guns) and then perhaps some variants, but obviously there's only so much one can do in a video.
(*it took me far too long to realise they were showing the new overwatch 2 default skins for the most part XD because I have not examined them in close detail, I was like wait that's not cassidy's default gun, then opened overwatch to examine them all myself)
They showed junkrats, reapers, sombras and widows overwatch 1 default skin/gun. The rest were overwatch 2 base skins with the exception of soldier's gun showed in the video which you pointed out, which was from the night ops skin

In possible explanation for why Reaper just chucks his shotguns away and pulls out new ones is that they are made of his cells as he can fully manipulate them to teleport and turn into mist. So it’s not a stretch to say he can create them with his cells, which may explain why whenever he shoots someone with them it heals them.

On the Widow's Kiss, I'd say it's probably similar to Metal Storm. Metal Storm was designed for hyper rapid firing but the same system could also be used to fire effectively a spear of bullets. It's probably a number of electrically fired rounds in each section of the cylinder and, in full auto mode, the weapon fires one round per cylinder section and spins to the next like a Bizon or Calico's helical magazine. Conversely, if firing in single shot, it fires all the rounds in the cylinder section maybe to improve armour-piercing capability and power by having like 5/6 rounds hit approximately the same spot in very quick succession....

Just a note for Mr Ferguson - mechanical keyboard switches provide both a momentary switch and tactile, mechanical aspect so something like that could easily be repurposed for an electrically actuated firearm. The IBM buckling spring in particular has a nice ramp up on the force as you get closer to the actuation point and a really nice, crisp, clean break. Obviously you'd want to adjust them for the purpose but the principle applies. I can appreciate why it never really took off but still think that casings with an electrical primer sound like a really nice thing for reloaders as the primer doesn't need to be replaced for several hundred shots.

Or there might be some sort of nanites in there that can tell they're being injected into a friendly or unfriendly target and act accordingly. Her grenade shows a splash of purple and yellow like Moira's orbs but I have no idea how the grenades work. All I remember from the lore is that Ana's gun was designed by Torb and Mercy to only heal but Ana modified it so it could also do damage.

4:34 the video gamey element here is that the Viper literally does more damage if you aim down the sights vs if you fire from the hip. Doesn’t make sense since you’re firing the same bullets, but it’s a fudge for the sake of gameplay.

I want to bring up a very slight detail that he missed on Cass's Peacekeeper (and in all fairness its not that hard to see why he missed it as you have to slow down the shooting animation to really see it) and that is that it has a slide! In fact functionally Cass's Peacekeeper is closer to a Metabeta 6 Unica revolver than a S&W revolver and is purely the reason I want to own said revolver!

So for those that don't know: the bottom barrel for Reaper's shotgun's isn't for the "primary" shotgun spread. Rather it's a leftover detail from VERY early Reaper, who was supposed to have a grenade launcher. While this launcher never made it into the game, it can be seen in the initial cinematic reveal for Overwatch.
Why the barrel remain to this day, I have no clue. Blizzard hasn't actively said anything on them, and they might be left in just as an Easter Egg, or may/will have a use later (like in PvE).

Surprised he didnt mention the fact that for the Biotic Launcher to even work you'd need a complicated way to get the ammo from the grenade mag in the back past the rifle ammo mag to use it, when the easy solution would be to have the mag positions swapped, meaning the rifle bullets go up and over the 'nades, no workaround required.

Metal Storm also produced 36-barreled stacked projectile volley gun boasting the highest rate of fire in the world, just over 1 million rounds per minute. A minigun with a belt of separate firing chambers also exists. Multi-shot Accessory Under-barrel Launcher (MAUL) is an electronically fired, 12-gauge shotgun for use as an accessory weapon to a range of weapons. A pity that they folded up in 2012.

The bullets on the buttstock of that Lever-action are a concern - at least from a realisim point of view - in that they're pointed! Obviously the Spitzer-style bullets are potentially subject to a chain-reaction in the feeding tube, with the exception of rounds like the "Leverevolution".

the reason the revolvers hammer in game dosent move before firing is just because in game people like to fire a bullet when they click so waiting even a 10th of a second for the hammer to slam forwards then firing the bullet dosent feel responsive enough in a fast paced multiplayer game. a lot of games seem to suffer this when implementing revolvers because its so visual in the way it works. having that bit of realisim might cause players to drift away from the character so instead they choose to set the hammer to be reactive instead of acting on the bullet, hence the "flapping about" amazing video btw this was really interesting.
