I have been in Japan for 2 years and seeing school children walking around alone was mind blowing at first. I'm glad I get to experience life here. It's truly beautiful.

I lived in Yokosuka Japan for a year and a half, while I was stationed during my military service, and girl, I miss it so much. Even Tough I feel I live in a paradise Island (Puerto Rico) I still miss the people over there, so kind, respectful and awesome, and the FOOD! OMG Such a culinary delight. And of course I still need to hike Mount Fuji all the way and visit Kyoto at least once. Thanks for your channel, source fed and table talk, you guys are very entertaining. Blessings to ya'll.

I have lived in Japan for twenty years. I agree, autumn is the best season for travel. Spring is beautiful, but short, rainy, with unpredictable weather; Cold one day, steamy the next. And the cities are great but the true beauty of Japan is in the countryside, staying at a minshuku, ryokan, or shukubou.

Yay, loved your thoughts on Japan! The more I watch your channel, the more I realize how similar you are to me, especially when it comes to your goals and views on things.
I just started learning japanese a few months back, but hearing about your trip and how they don't use their english just makes me want to study even harder! Thank you for doing these, I really loved them and I'm so glad you had a great time! Greetings from Austria, keep up the great work Meg!

Wow the imagery was amazing. The 6 years old walking alone is crazy. When I see it in anime (like Kanon as a prime example) ive always questioned how realistic that was. Also, as somebody who really wants to go multiple times and live there as well ( and hates hot weather) you gave great insight Meg, on the amount of people who speak English, to the weather and etc. You inspired me to continue learning the written languages (I have half of the Hirigana memorized) and hopefully start learning to

I really hope you get to live in Japan.
P.s. Here (in Denmark) children also travel by themselves by bus, bike or walking to school.
I didn't know it was that dangerous for a child in the USA to travel alone.

I went to Japan when I was 11. I also went during the summer so I completely understand! My dad was stationed in Yokosuka for a good portion of his 30 year Navy career. He had been there previous to my going there and told me I knew more Japanese than he did the first time he went. I nerded it up and took the dictionary everywhere before we went.

No. Humidity is measured in 'relative humidity' - that is, the amount of water vapor air can hold. The amount of water vapor it can hold depends on the temperature and barometric pressure. That enables 100% humidity.

I'm shocked that the Japanese people didn't speak English to you. I was there for 3 weeks in '08 and I had several Japanese come up to me and speak to me in English. This was a big help as I speak no Japanese and had a few day of travel by myself. The people there are very friendly. I would have missed my flight home if it wasn't for someone's help. Once while we waited at a train station,a little girl just randomly brought us candy from a vending machine. Saw the kids going to school too.

Your experience in Japan was essentially the same as mine, minus the school girl outfit...or maybe I DID wear one...uhuhu, Oh my gosh, the Summer that I went was record breaking heat, oh my gosh. It was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!! But, luckily the weather didn't ruin my experience. Seein' the little kids heading to school by themselves was TOO cute. I wish my school had little uniforms like theirs haha What I found astounding was all the old people on bikes!! Super active, and no bike locks!!

  • @spj4you

You made some acutely accurate observations for your first time in Japan, Meg! I've said the same thing about the school children to my Japanese coworkers as well, but they weren't as shocked since they assume America to be dangerous anyway.
And I was in Tokyo the same weekend you were but I saw on the news that that weekend was especially hot. Argh! If you though Japan was magical in this heat, I can't hear your thoughts on hanami. It's like walking through a dream.

The way I see it, luck is just circumstance. If you put yourself in the right situations, you'll feel more lucky because there's more opportunity for good things to happen. It doesn't make sense that there's some ethereal "luck" force driving our world.

I googled it for my own interest. The weather in Japan is currently at 76 degrees Fahrenheit with the humiditry at 88%, which is actually pretty similar to what I was looking up for San Diego yesterday. Not too bad and not nearly as disgusting as the weather in Philly right now.

Traveling IN Japan at the end of April to beginning of May is expensive. (Look up Golden Week) but for south Japan, late march, early April is best for Cherry Blossoms.
I know Tokyo is great, but you've gotta check out Kyoto! If you liked the peacefulness of Meiji-jinja, you MUST check out Kyoto. My suggestions are 高台寺 and 東福寺. They are amazingly beautiful, but not too crowded. And of course, for Cherry Blossoms, 円山公園 should not be missed!

I guess I got lucky with the weather, when I went it was cloudy and drizzly every day but one of the 3 weeks I was there. Next time visit a small town too, it's a completely different experience! I also went to Niigata and stayed in a village with a friend. I got to walk through bamboo, forests and rice fields! So lovely... I too long to live there for a while!

  • @MichaelAW17

Meg, come to Osaka next time you come. Osakan people are very friendly. Plus you would not be from Kyoto which is the one city contains the most Japanese history. Osaka also has its own "Akihabara" which is called "Den Den Town". You will still get the best of both worlds. If you ever want to live in Japan you can always look up English teaching jobs that offer visas or you can join a Japanese language school to get a short term student visa.
