      I left Japan to move to Vietnam 4.5 hours before the tsunami and was the last person on the flight. They told me that if I hadn’t been on the plane within 5 mins they would have left. When we landed In Hanoi and I looked up at the news broadcasts I immediately lost it, knowing that I must have lost at least - dozen people I knew, not close friends but great people that always made me feel, same as in Korea, and Vietnam that these places were my homes for a long time. I wish things happened differently and that day in March had never come. I have only been back once since then, due to most all my acquaintances had died or disappeared. It was such a hard time. For me and so many others. Especially considering only about 6 1/2 years before that there was the horrible devastation that happens all across the south Pacific from Sri Lanka, Indonesia, all the way across the Indian Ocean I remember going as a photo journalist to take pictures of the aftermath of that absolutely devastating underwater earthquake that created that tsunami that is one of a kind and our generations are lifetimes. Someone is a journalist many places over the last 20 to 25 years I had never ever seen anything so horrible. It looked like tactical nuclear weapons have been used everything totally destroyed flat nothing for miles and miles and miles, those are ones that I don’t think I’ll ever forget I miss all those people I miss all those fun times we had so many wonderful wonderful wonderful young Japanese young kids that had their whole life in front of them and a split second disaster just ruins so much sometimes I wish that I never got on that plane so that I could’ve stayed and helped Maybe possibly locate people that I knew so their families could have them probably give them the funeral rights that they deserve. I just never thought that takeoff 90% or more of the people that I knew that I had lived with them had become somewhat family to me they were just gone never ever heard from them again, how was the worst week and then another week and then another week another month even though I know there was nothing I could’ve ever done. I would’ve just stayed and died too. I miss Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos I miss them all so so very much. sorry for the depressing post. I just needed to get that off my chest.

    I lived in Japan for 11 years because my dad was in the Navy. Our tour was divided into two: 6 years from 1989 to 1995 and four years from 1997 to 2001. I lived in Iwakuni which is about an hour south of Hiroshima. I practically grew up there so I call it my childhood home though I was born in the Philippines. It was where I learned how to speak English. UNFORTUNATELY, I never knew the language because I went to school on base where almost everything was Americanized. But I spent a great deal of time outside the base with friends, and doing so was like stepping into technicolor. Remember the scene in Wizard of Oz where after Dorothy's house landed in Oz, she opens the door and sees Oz in color compared to the sepia environment of her house? Yeah, kinda like that when going off base after you pass the military guard. I miss Japan and would visit in a heartbeat.

    So they are actually still teaching people to use those writing brushes. That's cool. And we in China have stopped doing that. I took my writing brush leasons when I was very young. In high school, we were only taught what was necessary for the colledge entrance exam(高考).

    Here in the US at my martial arts school if I had “fooled around” with the weapon as you do at 4:30 they would have taken the weapon away from me and me to sit down.

    1:46. Set up (aka foreshadowing), not a plot point. Plot points take the story and spin it in another direction. Think of the movie Thelma and Louise. When Louise kills the man outside the bar, that's a plot point because it takes the story and spins it in another direction-it goes from being a movie about two friends going on a road trip to two fugitives on the run from the police. Foreshadowing is a literary device that hints at future events (story beats) that happen later on in the story. Usually in a script, setup is done in rules of three. This means that one scene per act is dedicated to this setup with the final dedicated scene serving as payoff/resolution.
    I don't know why I felt the need to explain this: I guess I was bored or something. Lol. Anyway, my name is Alex, and thanks for coming to my TED talk.

    How does the school system in Japan work? Is it different from the us? Like how do breaks work? Are they as long or longer or shorter and stuff like that?

    • @Bee-wo5of
      @Bee-wo5of 3 месяца назад +3

      You’re only required to go through middle school - high school is optional but encouraged. You typically take a test to decide what schools you go to. No lunch room, you eat in your class room. No passing time - you stay in one classroom all day and the teachers go from room to room. You clean the classroom after school and then go to an activity/club.
      Appearance rules are tougher too. You have to wear the uniform. You can’t have certain hair styles. You can’t have makeup or a beard. You can’t dye your hair (but I’ve heard of them making non-Asian students dye their hair black or accusing them of having dyed hair because their hair wasn’t black).
      It’s very different, but they get a much better education and school experience than US students do.

    Japanese culture is so amazing & interesting Megan since you are an english teacher are you also required to speak Japanese at the school you work at because of your fellow co-workers speaking it and the students? Did you also have to speak Japanese when you did this video for the day?

    There is something I am curious about Japanese schools. Is summer school real where students take remedial classes? And do teachers and ALTs have at least paid summer vacation?

    Japan is the kindom of introverts and conformist rules. All students must comply with these both written and tacit rules to become a stellar student. It can be something preposterous such as dictating your means of transportation while commuting to school.
