I went to Tokyo last year after wanting to go for as long as I can remember. It was wonderful. Have the best of times. Check out and enjoy Akihabara, Harajuku and all the districts. Hit the Pokémon Centre. Go to Disneyland! I didn't speak a word of Japanese and found it easy to get around and get help. You must have just been unlucky! Have an awesome time, Meg. :)
Went to Japan over New Years just past. Just like you, had been wanting to go for years and years. It did not let me down. Although I could work out a map and find my hotel, we did end up walking a few km's without being able to ask anyone. Best trip of my life though. God I want to go back.
Girl, you crazy! The train system is so easy to navigate in Tokyo, but I'm glad you eventually got to your hotel. Enjoy your stay in Japan! I'd love to visit there again some day.
Haha Meg, I know how you feel, I LOVE JAPAN!!, I'm currently there as well studying Japanese, I have extremely limited Japanese ability and get around just fine, some of those restaurants with the ticket machines still intimidate me though. Don't worry about the trains, you get used to it really fast. I hope Japan lives up to your expectations.

We had a coordinator which was a life saver! The best part was he'd let me attempt everything in Japanese first and then come to my rescue if someone didn't understand. It make me really use my Japan with the added benefit of a safety net!
Meg! if you can find a private tour guide and you can get you into or see things normal tourists usually wouldn't see. Also Asakusa is fun, it the oldest market and had a cool temple to see. You'll love Harajuku District. Also if you want a quiet day the Japanese History Museum isn't bad but weird that it has David Bowie's clothes that he designed. Lastly if your having trouble talking to people just speak to them in their accent. It works for some reason and they know a fair amount of English.

The best advice I can give you is (and it may sound strange) but have zero expectations. I don't mean low expectations, I just mean take everything for what it is and try to avoid comparing it to anything from back home. Japan is on the opposite side of the globe and has a unique experience that is neither better, nor worse. Just different. If you make your way up to Sapporo (though I doubt you will), the beer gardens up here are awesome! Enjoy your stay here!

Thats amazing you had that experience. I have been there 4 times for prolonged stays and never had problems communicating in tokyo.
