I agree with Meg on this one. The first con that I went to in Ottawa (of all places) a couple of years ago, had men and women of all shapes and sizes rocking their cosplay. One of my favourites was a larger woman rocking out her Black Canary outfit, hosiery and all, with the swagger and confidence of a supermodel. Confidence sells the costume. If you're happy with yourself, you'll knock 'em dead at cosplay.

Not all of them are! There are lots of bigger girls who absolutely NAIL cosplays. The most important thing is the carry yourself with confidence - I know that can be tough - but when I see a girl who carries herself well, no matter what shape or size she may be, I love it.

I agree a lot with what Meg says. I went to Vidcon this year, cosplaying for the first time as Castiel from Supernatural. Basically I just found everything I needed at Good Will, and just pieced the costume together. And I was surprised how well I was received and it felt so amazing and wonderful and GAH. So I am definitely interested in Cosplaying and hopefully one day, I will get Meg's attention.

Please do more Cosplay videos. I really want to learn how to make my own costumes. I would also just like to see more chill videos on here. My first cosplay was a closet cosplay of Death from Sandman then last year i did her again :) but much better. My first prop pieces were for Sailor Pluto (i smiled when you said earrings and pluto's time key). I like doing 'simple' costumes but are technically challenging :) My fav character is Fluttershy from MLP:FiM. The most important part of deciding a cosplay: A character you can resemble, and identify with. I could pull off several characters, but I have no attachment to them. That emotional investment keeps the motivation during the stressful times. A challenge for men is when it comes to facial hair. Some are willing to shave for the sake of cosplay, but I am not, so you have to work around that.

I have been inspired, by you and Jessica Nigri and the Incredible Rise of Cosplays I saw at the ECCC early this year, to try it myself.
I picked a Favorite character from a fantasy book series who has distinctive features for his Costume, but I'm already seeing that I'll need to prop-make them. I'll probably buy the outfit, since it's a typical medeival look and I can't sew for shiz. Definitely taking pictures already though.
Thanks for the supportive words in your blog!

Idea of easy cosplay: Booker DeWitt (girly version). Waistcoats are easy to find, well just everything about that costume is easy to find, even a Skyhook, though that's a tad expensive, but totally worth it, I've not actually cosplayed before, but I'd love to I just haven't had the time.

One Piece has some good characters for beginners since they just wear normal clothes most of the time, however characters change clothes depending on where they are, so you can make modifications on Luffy's vest or make characters wear completely different clothes as long as you can tell what character you are, oh, and also for the people who likes skimpy cosplay, there are some characters that are there mostly as fan-service (of all female body types)

The whole point of cosplaying is to have fun as someone else for however long. It doesn't matter what your skin tone is. Do whatever you want and have fun with it. P.S. I'm black too and I COMPLETELY understand where your coming from. But eventually I just decided not to cater to the feelings of negative minded people and I've been very much rewarded in return. :)
