As for your PC troubles Meg, why not both? Start with a not so high end laptop so you can take it with you and it can still run games fairly well but you aren't spending /that/ much of a fortune. This way you can take it with you starting immediately and then build your own desktop when the laptop needs upgrading. You can use the desktop for your hardcore gaming, and use the laptop just to hold you over when you travel.
Oh man... you are so lucky to have that locket! I would LOVE to find one. Especially if the moon would move and everything as it played... Super jealous.

I bought a Lenovo Y500 gaming laptop. It's amazing. I love it. Play any current game on high settings with high FPS. If you want to keep performance, have it plugged in when you play, but if you're anywhere where you want to play a game, you should have a power outlet. It can even have SLI Nvidia cards (GT 750M, 2gb each)

if you mostly drive, then yeah it's great to be able to bring your gameing laptop with you.... but don't expect to be bringing it along for a walk or anything like that, because the darn things weigh a ton. i've found myself leaving my gaming laptop behind A LOT, because they are so clumsy to carry around
With as much as u travel to different places a laptop is great thing for you. Yeh it will have to updated in 3 yrs or so but its just a little bit of a pain to upgrade. Yeh desktops are easy to work on but once again in 3 yrs you would have to upgrade it as well.
I got an Alienware 14 a couple days ago. It's GREAT! I don't know a lot about PCs as I'm primarily a Mac user, but it plays Skyrim, The Witcher 1 and 2, DotA 2, Dragon Nest (an awesome MMORPG) The World (a .hack based MMO.) Those are the only games I have so far, but I've only had the thing for a few days! It should be able to play all new games too as it was just released in July (or June) so it's still pretty high up their as far as power goes. I'd definitely recommend it.
I have the same pet peeve. I had some friends over and I had prepared a meal. When the meal was about to start I turned on the radio. My friends said that it was rude for me to do that because it stifles dinner conversation. To which i responded " I think it is horribly rude to eat with your mouth open and to make me listen to you masticate your food while i try to enjoy mine?" the radio is no longer an issue and most of them have taken to having light music playing while eating lol

You never know, if you pick a new enough laptop they may not phase out the motherboard and you might just be able to actually upgrade it. I did this, and 4 years, a new HDD, and a maxed out processor, my old-ass Vaio is still super usable. But yeah, it is a little bit of a PITA.
There are barebones kits that allow you to build your own laptop, so that may be a way of building your own gaming rig while still keeping the portability aspect :-) Computer Shopper has an article about doing so; just google "build your own laptop" and that should give you some ideas on where to start with such a project.

When u're traveling the whole point is that u're moving around, doing and seeing things, not going on gaming binges in your hotel room, and u're gonna set up your laptop with a mouse plugged in while waiting for a flight either. That's kinda why u have a 3DS,right, for gaming on the go.
meg just remember that gaming laptops are incredibly heavy and you might say after one trip that its to heavy and leave it at home. you are awesome and have a awesome day
Just digging around online, it looks like I misspoke... while there used to be barebones laptop kits, it doesn't look like any manufacturers are still making those kits anymore. In that case, you may want to look at ASUS for a decent custom-configured laptop. It's been a while since I've bought ASUS products, but past experiences were always positive.

It's true that you can bring gaming laptop to hotels and airports, but the internet at those places suck so you cant play online. Also you need to worry about battery life, which goes faster when your playing games. When I travel I use my GameBoy Colour cause I am old school! Even your phone will work, watch netflixs on your phone. Build or Buy a desktop. At least you can upgrade the parts of a desktop, which may cause $400, you will have to buy a hole new laptop to upgrade.

get the desktop!!! If you're gaming at an airport, use your phone or DS. You could be interrupted at any moment, you can save faster, and they're a lot more comfortable for being on the go. The convenience of having a laptop for gaming is overrated. When you game, it's time to game and be immersed in that world.

REMOTE DESKTOP!! Not sure if you saw my post yesterday...but if you build a computer you can just use remote desktop back to it using your current laptop or even a tablet. Granted...you will need internet connection...but WiFi is everywhere nowadays and dedicated graphics is VERY important to high end gaming >< and is MUCH cheaper in a desktop

Meg you could buy an intermediate level computer and it will play everything that isn't super hardcore on decent settings. I can't recommend laptops till they're modular (which will be coming soon as some already have modular GPUs and CPUs)

But, I've seen laptops that have badass graphics in them and they are heavy and hot and not really worth lugging around. If you do decide to go for a full gaming laptop be prepared to shell out for it. There are a bunch of companies that let you basically build your own.
