I was fortunate enough to see this band live many times here in West Cumbria back in the day, I bought this album on vinyl at one of their gigs and still love it as much today as the day I first heard it, over the years I became good friends with Englands guitarist Olly Alcock eventually fulfilling a lifelong ambition to get to jam with him at one of his solo gigs in Carlisle a couple of years ago, Olly is still an amazing guitarist with great tone and feel, a nice fella too !!! (& a wicked sense of humour!).........I dream that one day I will hear him playing the material on this great album one more time, that would be magical !
I WAS TALKING TO THE DRUMMER IN THIS BAND . PHIL COOK AT THE NAVY CLUB MARYPORT CUMBRIA ON SUN 20TH JAN 2018 , HE WAS TELLING ME ABOUT THIS ALBUM BEING MEGA RARE . HE WAS IN THE BAND CALLED STRIKE IT UP .

Olly Allcock singer and guitar lives on my road about 80 yards from me and I see him most days going for a newspaper. I don't know him, only to see and smile at. I've some accross this album 3 or 4 times on vinyl over the years. I sold them all because I used to deal in records. My town is the best place to find a copy after the internet as they were a local band (Carlisle). Very rare though. Great album.
If the trick of music is to make you "feel", then this album has certainly done that, keeping my mind off of my troubles. Always good to know that there are magnificent musicians that are still being Re-discovered.
Fantastic album! I'm not lucky enough to have an original copy, but I do have a very good-sounding Austrian reissue from some time in the 80s. "Nature Ruled" is probably my favorite track
thanks god for internet, if it wasnt for it neither me and most of the listeners wouldnt come across such beautiful music such as this and others; otherwise this music wouldnt reach people other than the ones that listened this back in the day and prog rock connosieurs
Knew Olly and Ben For years before i moved to Australia in 82, and yes i was given an album by the great man Olly himself, still have it and still play it on special occassions, and still have contact with him, a gifted guitarist and who inspired me to get back into playing guitar again, which i did and still do.
Sounds like many other great UK bands from the prog rock era..lots of talent and little or no air play on US or UK airwaves unless its non profits on the FM dial here,
What an awesome digging channel iv discovered here..! Thanks.. just need me a nice joint to smoke now...!! Cheers for sharing your knowledge and huge respect my fellow diggers.. I’m 35, iv been digging for old vinyl gems since 2006... my absolute fav rock fusion LP iv found to date is called ‘Pop Workshop’ from Sweden (1973 vinyl which I happily paid £120 for...)
I was given a copy of this album by an A&R guy whilst hitchhiking up the M6 through Cumbria in the late 1970s... Surprisingly I still have it in very good condition over 40 years later...
Great. I met a lad in Penrith with the lp, but he was given the album by someone in the band so was personally attached to keeping it! I respect his decision, but it was too bad I couldn't get a copy.
I got to see England playing quite a few local Carlisle gigs back in the 70s I remember they were headline band at bitts park pop festival ' a one day concert held in the city of Carlisle mid 70s ' also saw England playin at micks club on Fisher street Carlisle and at the crown and mitre hotel ballroom gig in Carlisle - I bought this ultra rare album back in the 70s probably at the pink panther record shop in Carlisle happy memories
very good,....................................................................................................................................................................
I was in a band called Magic in the 70's and recall meeting Olly Alcock a couple of times probably at The Tow Bar in Egremont. We seemed to get on and had a lot in common musically. I also was good friends with the other "England" with Robert Webb and I'd played for many years in bands with the drummer Jode Leigh. I briefly joined the Garden Shed England in 2006 and we played a couple of gigs in Japan and Mexico and one in Sheffield. I.m very proud to have had contact with both "Englands" I wonder if that makes me a rarity?
Hi all,i have this album..in mint condition!!....in 2015 it sold for 2,000 .....offers please. stu. Sorry Ollie, needs must!! I still think Ollie is one of the best rock and rollers ever, bar none!! I roaded for Ollie way back in 73-4 when John Wait was bass player. John joined the Babies and Benny the Egg took over bass.....Top man!! extremely competent!! great bass player!! They became ACE Alcock Clark and Eggleston .....John Clark being the drummer..but another band entered the charts called Ace with ..How long has this been going on.Ollie renamed the band England....Paul Rossiter ...an American ...joined the band...Great asset!! Ollie has this great .. Ear ..He always gets the sound right!!...Hi Ollie, i truly rate you as one of the greatest rock and rollers ever. Lady luck did not look your way!!Stu.
I would read your book if you wrote about those times and people, I've always had a love for that overall sound. this Ollie kinda reminds me of the other Ollie (Halsall w/ Kevin Ayers).
It's very interesting that the comment below said they'd be interested in reading a book about these times. I was asleep in my cot upstairs whilst this album was recorded in my Dad's cellar. It's hilarious that the video keeps showing photos of a studio. I assure you, Dad's basement in Appleby didn't look anything like that. Anyway, thanks for sending out appreciation for my dad and my friend/guitar teacher Olly. Ben Eggleston Jnr
I have almost no interest at all in "new" music, because there seems to be an inexhaustible amount of music from the 60s and 70s to discover. Totally fresh stuff, by bands with no templates to imitate.
I couldn't agree more, I feel the same way, I discover new " old" records virtually on a daily basis via RUclips and many are definitely worth seeking out.
I diligently work to discover the old music, like this, to inform my creation of the 'new'. You're missing out if you neglect the new, tbh; and you're contributing to the extinction of this style as a living art. Bands are out there now, working very hard in this style; and are desperate to find friends in an environment 10 times more hostile than the one their predecessor artists faced. The musicians in this band wouldn't leave them to die, and neither should you.
I have an original copy of this on the -Deroy label, this came from the agig the band did in NOV 1977, I even got it signed, always wondered if it was worth anything.
I have an unofficial release of this. Breeder Backtrack Archive Series. Do not know when this was released or how many that was printed. 2016 saw a repress of this though but only 300 pcs.
They added a keyboard player to the lineup later on right? I seem to recall a fantastic prog album that had synths, and mellotron. This sounds a lot like Flash.
I have a vinyl rerelease of this LP, well I guess that is what it must be, the cover is the same, with a slightly thicker border, the record has a red label with the words; breeder backtrack archive series AADC011 1976, any info?
Hi Richard ......Yes it is a reissue the original was on Deroy, looks like it was pressed in Austria, not sure what year but it seems Breeder did several unofficial (or counterfeit) reissues in the late 80`s probably done around the same time
Very interesting,it is good to have a vinyl copy,I picked it up very cheaply ,second hand so it is a good addition to my collection of psych/prog/rock from the early 70s, Yesterday I found an original copy of the first, [only?] LP by Skid Row; Skid, featuring Gary Moore,on CBS, UK ....for$20 [australian] excelent!!
was lucky enough to have picked this up at a boot sale about 20 years ago for 50p,very impressive album.Just out of curiosity does any one know anything much about another deroy record i have by keith dear, usual plain labels,no cover just titled "spectrum".It is an album of covers and two original songs.I only live about three miles from the former deroy studio so regularly find run of the mill deroy records, but the question is what happened to keith dear? The matrix is der 710.
Hi walshwalsh10 - a copy of Spectrum by Keith Dear sold on ebay in 2013 for £778, and the release is also catalogued on discogs...not sure if that adds anything to your knowledge though RR
@@RarestRecords Hi thanks for the info,I knew that he had a small amount of collectability but checking the catalogue numbers this seems to pre-date the known copies of spectrum plus the track listing is totally different, almost as if he was just trying his hand. The sleeve notes say that it was recorded with kind permission of BBC radio solent, presumably using their facilities probably on a revox A77 or B77 as these were also for sale by the radio station in Cumbria at the same time...But just who was keith dear?
In only find one band Named England on discogs www.discogs.com/artist/1150992-England-2 Thats obv. not these guys What is name of lp so i can narrow my search? Cheers
What a waste of talent! 99 albums pressed, signed, sealed and delivered, but no reaction? Were all the A&R dudes sitting on their ears? Instead of looking for the next 5 minute fame they should have spent all their money and promotion possibillities on this band.
There sure was! The one that did Garden Shed was obscure but nowhere as obscure as this particular England. At least I spent US$50 for an original copy of Garden Shed and if I ever saw an original copy of this particular England I'd probably scream as it would be completely unaffordable to me, and after hearing only 99 copies were made, fat chance in finding an original copy.

Holy hell, "Beauty and the Beast" is an amazing tune. Great vocals and chorus on that one. Is this the same England that did "Garden Shed?"
Nope, I thought it was the same England at first as well.
The guitar player is outstanding!!
great vintage prog! I really dig this kinda music!

Titus Groan is a gem. There are only a few albums in which all songs equally good.

ScienceFindsGod Agreed. Not only that I'm quite happy just to go back and enjoy it all again. Especially on vinyl.
absolutely! music in general was so much better overall, especialy prog.....can't beat the "old school" bands.
I couldn't agree more, I feel the same way, I discover new " old" records virtually on a daily basis via RUclips and many are definitely worth seeking out.
That's exactly how I feel as well. Nicely put!

Just sold mine for £1200 so if you need some Christmas money...........
I have an original copy of this on the -Deroy label, this came from the agig the band did in NOV 1977, I even got it signed, always wondered if it was worth anything.
Fantastic Ron ...you have a seriously rare record there!!!
It remembers me to Bachdenkel.
This is some great music. And yes, I have sent my songs to majors. They dont even respond these days.
I can hear why many of these rare albums are rare.
You think its bad music?
I have a copy for sale in the condition of almost nM- record, and the cover is very strong ex . No ringwear, fully readable spin.
I have an unofficial release of this. Breeder Backtrack Archive Series. Do not know when this was released or how many that was printed. 2016 saw a repress of this though but only 300 pcs.

I sold the singer my guitar a couple of years ago
I hope he gave you a complimentary copy then!
Lol no

good guitarist. I dont know sufficient english to understand what hé sings. all are good.
Was Osprey the inspiration for Yes's Roundabout or the other way around?
The LP sleeve seems to picture a three-piece guitar based band, yet there's a lot of saxophone on this album. Does anyone know who or why?
Olly Alcock has confirmed 500 were pressed, not 99 as is often stated.
They added a keyboard player to the lineup later on right? I seem to recall a fantastic prog album that had synths, and mellotron. This sounds a lot like Flash.
You're referring to the album Garden Shed from 1977 on Arista. That's a totally different band called England.
The way they play at 35:46 , reminds me of a song from 1973 , by Socrates (drunk the conium) , the song Destruction. watch?v=Gx1JbMGXRaI
Can you post the names of the musicians/singers in the description please?

No this is a different `England`
The first track sounds very similar to Roundabout by Yes at the beginning.
I wonder if these guys ever listened to a Yes album?
