- In the early ‘90s, a visiting American executive, clearing out the debris from an office at EMI, one of the companies to which Dark had sent their LP, found ‘Dark Round The Edges’. The rest they say is history. The Latest Copy Sold For £25,000 check out Steve Giles comments below
`Dark Around the Edges` (SIS SR0102S) has become one of the most sought after records in the world. Initially there were only 32 produced (including 2 test pressings) which had the Black on Red label. soon after handing them out to family & friends, more were needed so another 32 produced (again with 2 test pressings) there have only ever been 64 Originals!
Guitarist Steve used the facilities of his father's photographic business to add his own photographs, which he glued on. On the sleeve was a girl Steve knew at the time (local vicar's daughter) shown staring out of a bay window at his parents’ house, where is she now we wonder? There have only ever been three variants of the handmade sleeve a Colour Gatefold, Black and White Gatefold, & Black and White Single Sleeve.
The gatefolds were made by gluing a flap of card to the inside of the back of the sleeve opening so that it folded over the sleeve covering the opening. Onto the inside of that was the B&W 'Montage' shots and when folded over it showed 'The Girl On The Settee'. So on the front of the album sleeve it was actually the band and not the 'Girl In The Window'. There were only ever 13 colour gatefold sleeves made. Also on all the original single sleeve versions it is the group shot that is on the front of the album. From the first run there were 19 single B&W sleeves made. The final tally 12 Colour Gatefolds (1 'Special' Colour Gatefold), 1 White Doodle On Sleeve, 12 B&W Gatefolds and 38 B&W Single Sleeves
Every single album came complete with hand made Lyric Booklet, using Feather-Weight photo paper. The fact that they are actual photos is the reason that there is nothing on the reverse side. Completed by stapling together. All the booklets were identical but the ones included with the single sleeves had the 'Montage' and 'Car-Track Listing' shots included. The LP cost £34.68 to record and £87.17½p to produce, for which they were supposed to have a whip-round, only Steve, then earning £6 a week, seems to have picked up the entire tab. The record was bought mostly by friends, who paid £3 each. Some were sent out to record companies. They never even received an acknowledgment. Nevertheless they went down to London and knocked on doors. One company, Island Records, held out the promise of work and even quoted a fee (£40 for a seven-day week), provided the group organised a gig its executives could come and watch. Dark organised a gig, but Island Records never turned up.
And that was it really. They broke up in late 1972 and drifted apart. There were jobs, marriages, children and even other bands, but it was the end of Dark, until in 1993 their phones began to ring.
At the time, this would have been considered a good album. Hearing it now, a masterpiece!
Unsurpassed.
Timeless.
One of the best records of all time, regardless of genre, it exceeds heavy rock, the musicality of Dark is far out.
Records like this, heavy on the fuzz and obscurity both define my appeal for the genre! Thanks for the share! I am so tired of the same early 70's tracks classic rock FM plays. I think I'd be just fine if I never hear Free Bird again!
Kevin Weaver amen, so many obscure bands much better than mainstream overstreams.
I agree with you. I find it interesting, however, to discover through the internet many different (live) versions of Led Zep, or Cream songs such as "Sunshine Of Your Love", all different, (many of them bootleg) I've never heard before
The record industry @#$%ED us. I find great German, Greek. Spanish, south American from back then all over you tube. Excellent stuff
I stopped listening to commercial radio years ago, my musical knowledge surpasses almost anyone I know now thanks to RUclips. It's amazing the amount of great obscure stuff that's out there.
@@Sandbagger300 Man ya ain't just whistlin DixiE ! 😉
Just the kind of stuff I've been looking for for 44 years.
❤
Martin Weaver ( God of fuzz/wah guitar) from Wicked Lady plays on this lp. Just a fantastic lp.
I've heard so many excellent obscure early 70's bands here that I never heard of, I'm loving this, Thanks RR
So many bands in that era given the keys to a golden kingdom, and other bands just as good if not better, are given a trap door to the sewers.
What a tragedy that British bands of this quality, during the Golden Age of contemporary music yet, weren't provided with the studio time, arrangements, record and touring contracts they so greatly warranted. Look, we're still searching out and listening to them half a century later. (To prove I put my money where my sentiment is, I bought the CD some twenty years ago!)
Fantastic album just can't believe they were not picked up . Thanks for posting this
Fluid playing, nice dense sound, and a solid groove. Much better than most albums that got many more props as "lost masterpieces," and certainly better than a lot of what was on the radio back then.
A fine album from the halcyon daze of 1972: Machine Head, Captain Beyond, Demons and Wizards and The Magician's Birthday, Exile on Main Street, Black Sabbath 4, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Close to the Edge, etc. Wish I could go back to early 70s!
Such a great record! Perfect combination of driving rhythms, swirling and chiming fuzz guitar and dreamy psychedelic vocals: it would sound good released in any decade.
Steven Giles this album is pure magic! thank you so much! if you have shows up and coming I would come see your amazing band! lots of love
Thanks for sharing such story. I discovered this album more than 10 years ago thanks to youtube and since then it is on my favorite list, always with me on my smartphone music folder. Burst in the Dark Side of the Moon...
Incredible bursts of Fuzz Guitar workouts interspersed all through the album makes this a hidden Psych Rock gem from the early Seventies...
my favorite record of all time,Love Ya Steve, poppa.
Your dad and his mates made a great record. Sad it took thirty years for most of us to hear it - but sounds as good now as I'm sure it did at the time.
Ahh, the old 'toilet flush' sound effect halfway through the song - a master stroke ;)
jajaja! The inclusion of a toilet flush sound effect could be a clever and humorous way to nod to Duchamp and his ideas about art! Who knows?
The whole conceptual art in this record is amazing.
Мощно, замысловато, очень хорошо. Гитара выписывает впереди, вокал как бы невзначай без напряга, бас как бы побухивает тихонько, барабаны как бы постукивают в отдалении, но как же это связывается в кучу! Очень здорово!
Shame music has flat lined
So much beauty in music
Just seems to be all but gone
All thats left is the garbage on the radio, but then you hear something like this you wanna start a band again
Damnit i love rock n roll
Top comment God bless you
Thank you for sharing these amazing records. I would never have had the chance to hear many of them before. Cheers!
Thank you, this is nice, replete with tasty tasteful vintage sounds.
Amazing record! Amazing history of the hand made covers! Amazing channel!
I love it!!!
Regards from Argentina.
thanks Oreja..appreciate the comments
I agree completely ! The Dark Record is mindblowing... By the way "Materia Gris" ... one of my favourite from Argentina :-) Such a good Concept Album... Obra Prima !! Regards from Zurich
Thank you for uploading AMAZING ALBUMS!!!
Regards from Seoul, Korea
It's unbelievable to see an actual original release of this mega rare gem... and the booklet aswell !!!. All together and complete. That's pretty fantastic! Wow!.. is all I can say. The music is bloody brilliant too...
Awesome record. I can't believe that this was ignored by Labels...
My local store has the 90s repress with the black cover art, I hope that it'll still be there tomorrow.
I can, it’s too damn good
so, was it there?
This sound was when music was at its best and music has not improved since the 1970's.
What a great band...
better than any 1980-2018 band
Right you are. A thousand times right. Music as anything other than background noise died around 1973.
Poor deaf guys. Many hundred excellent albums e. g. from the early postpunk era just eluded you.
Gish by Smashing Pumpkins, just to name one with similar sounds
As I agree Music in the 70s is my favorite. But you should try some new stuff plenty of amazing albums that have came out recently you got to find them just like these ‘rare’ records
Can't stop hearing them
Superb guitar...
Thank you for sharing a record you paid 25,000 pounds for. This stuff has been a part of my life since the '70's,The first internet only broadened in h availability of rare stuff like this...✌️🤩✌️
There phones should never stop ringing! This album rules should have made a million
GREEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTT!!! VERY VERY FANTASTIC!!!!
Got a good CD copy from Steve Giles the vocalist and guitar player
I have an original :)
The presentation and information fantastic! The album is very good!
Glad you like it!
my Favorite lp of All Time, poppa.
Very good!
"Dark Side Of Progressive Music" this record Is Groovy!
There’s a good reason why these albums are rare, and it’s not because they’re good. However compared to the trash that is being produced today they are truly amazing.
Maybe you haven't even listened once to this masterpiece, friend, to say something like that.
I heard about this band in the late 80s thanx to the Perfumed garden section in Italian magazine ROCKERILLA. But, how to get a slice of sound? Thank you very much for this gem, there are so much forgotten and undervalued musicians
We had to have the Rockerilla article translated. Many thanks for your kind comments. Ron Johnson - bass.
Ezt a asztalhátu nőstényt nemkérem. Csak a zenét. Köszi.
This is another one I'm going to get thanks to Rarest Records. Thanks! Ebay has some re-release vinyl copies.
oh the art that falls through the unconscious fingers of profit based distribution systems........thank you internet and thank you rarest records!
An original very creative and skillfully played fine album
from excellent super talented young musicians that did
not get all the recognition that they certainly deserved...
perhaps they should have called it,"electric fuzz around
the edges"...anyway,it is a fantastic album...thanks alot
Great album!
If you happen to find the 90s repress, get it, it sounds really good. :)
Yes! Just picked up a copy of the '98 Akarma pressing!
Totally!
Thank you, thank you for uploading
Love the toilet flush mid-solo at 18.33
Фантастическая гитара Стива сделала весь стиль группы.
It was actually Martin weaver
Two thumbs up!!! For the channel and the lp!
Thanks Miguel
Geez I wish you were my "noisy" neighbour! What a collection. I listen to so much music, art documentaries, old bl & wh mystery movies etc, try to stay up to date on economics, sociological issues etc and sometime I need self help stuff SO I forget about you- I finally hit the 'bell". Wow I am amazed at how many groups sorta sounded like some of my to this day favs, Pentangle, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn on their own and Fairport Covention and sweet, Nick Drake- those musicians changed folk forever- I could go on, but you know...! What a fantastic channel- more music lovers of an age should know and actually so should younger cats because A the current music isn't so hot, sorry I dislike RAP for the most part and B a true music lover should have a good knowledge of all genres and other musicians. I listen quite a bit of jazz and some classical and opera- I have had a few muses from folk and rock genres that turned me on to what they love and what has influenced them...Bravo. Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and any other religions I don't the celebrations of - Happy Druid Beltane!!! Let's have a Mummer's Dance with Loreena McKennitt. Namaste Z MAY 2021 BE A YEAR OF TRUE CHANGE, MAY THE EARTH'S WEALTH NOT BE EXPLOITED AND MAY IT BE DISTRIBUTED EQUALLY AND MAY WE LAY DOWN GUNS, ETC AND PLAY, SING, AND DANCE...
Wow. I bought the cd at Discogs. From Steve Giles himself. Signed. 325/1000. Hurry hurry 😊
exellent band perfect music thanx for posting
Ridin' the fuzz wave, blowing through my hair as my cares drown and sink to the bottom
SENSACIONAL!!!
I dig the guitar sound with heavy fuzz!
The beginning of “Zero Time” almost felt like the musical expression of “disco inferno”. Groovy, organic and yet evil.
They sound good. "The Dark" was one of the band names we were gonna use, LOL. I like their taste in monikers. You had to have big hair and big amps in 1972, Hahaha...Like the clangy, fuzzy guitars. Not overly mellow and boring like much of the stuff at that time. They still had some freak flag going on.
Great music. Very often I am interested in rare recordings from a more academic POV. However, I did the music.
Thanks...good album
Awesome.. thanks a lot..
Most welcome!
What an amazing album, Awesome upload and so good to hear it - holy crap £25,000 thats a price!
I've seen them sell for more than that. And those who can afford one is happy to pay that much. Wish I had one.
Kinda nuts I think when you can get a nice sounding reissue for far less.

He just sang about the Dark 🌑 side of the moon 🌘 a year before Pink Floyd made a fortune off of it... This is som very grOOvin' music 🎶🌌☮️✌️
Fabulous, thank u, good time for you
This was my road trip cd for years. I need a new copy.
The second track reminds me of very early Scritti Politti for some reason....
Спасибо!
oh my god......its so good!!!! play again
the standard is excelent, they must have been quite unlucky not to get signed, its easy to imagine this on vertigo,Dawn,or Island, maybe they lacked a little bit more originality to set them apart from the many other bands trying to get signed at the time
Thenk'you and compliment fort this you tube channel
Rarest views for great music !
My dad's got nearly all these albums 1st and second pressings in mint condition, he's collected since he was 16, he's now 65 and selling them off. We will be at Reading Record fair on Sunday 4th February.
Man, this is a good one.
YES !!!!!!
We come here when we're sick of hearing Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird. It is somewhat similar to the situation where after having had tasteless industrial beer a million times, we say "hey, Mr. Unknown brewed his own beer in his basement, let's try something new, let's taste his craft brew"
I so agree !!!!!!
Damn right, hatts off to some Skynyrd stuff, but alabama and bird makes me sick, so overplayed
Alabama was good and all, but I always preferred Ed King in Strawberry Alarm Clock personally, just my style
Martin Weaver from Wicked Lady...
Thank you very much RR for this Monster... and all the precious informations around all the records. This is really a holy grail LP into the Heavy Progressive Section of Sound. One of the best in my opinion. It becomes better and better by listening. I have found it only on CD... better than nothing ! (sorry for my bad english) Best wishes from Zurich
Hello to Nicola in Zurich!
wow! damned so fantastic Album! love this
Nice.
Grata...muito bom.... é pouco
I would like to like it twice!
Very, very nice. Some time links or even times for each song would be great, to help people quickly play a song or know which song is playing on the album should they lose count. Thanks for posting!
All round the edges baby, all round the edges...and its good 🦕
Muito bommm...guitarras..baixo...batera....orgao....tudo muito bom..
First impression is good, have to check properly
Welcome to the Fuzz Universe!
