Hi! My name is Cody! I came across your RUclips page as I was researching oral rinses. 4 months ago my dentist prescribed me Peridex oral rinse because I had gingivitis, along with having braces. The rinse cleared up my gingivitis, but I am pretty sure the gingivitis is back, because I have some puffy gums in-between my braces brackets, but I don’t see my dentist again until December. Hi Cody! Closys Sensitive toothpaste and rinse are excellent substitutes for Peridex. Using them in conjunction with a waterflosser and sonic toothbrush give excellent results.

I heard that on avergae women have more acidic mouths than men too so may be even more important! I want to see tootpaste and mouthwash studies done comparing efficacy of products for women compared to men!
Hi Derik, thanks a lot for the informative video! I understand that all mouthwashes containing fluoride are acidic because the chemical reaction for fluoride to bond (sorry if that’s not the correct term) only happens in an acidic environment. Can you confirm if that’s the case, ie there’s actually a trade-off between fluoride mouthwash and neutral/alkaline rinses?
Thank you so much for the wonderful video! I was wondering which THERABREATH version is the best one to use to protect enamel and exposed Dentin? THERABREATH has a few different options. May you please recommend the one that's best for enamel protection and repair? Thank you!!
@@DentistrywithDerik Hi again! I hope all is well! I've been using the pink Therabreath ever since your recommendation and love it! The only thing is its a bit expensive - so I use it sparingly and get it on sale on Amazon. Of note, I saw at Shoppers Drug Mart a product called "Crest Pro Health Advanced Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash Alcohol Free." I was just wondering if you felt that was a comparable product to Therabreath pink bottle? If so, I would switch to Crest because it was cheaper. However, if you think that that Crest product is still in the damaging category, then of course I will stick with Therabreath brand. Is there a certain ingredient that the Crest has that makes it damaging? I saw the Crest had CPC in the inactive ingredients list, and so I was concerned it might cause teeth staining. I know Therabreath fortunately does not have CPC. However the Crest said it had extra Fluoride and was alchohol free so I was just wondering what your thoughts were... if this particular Crest product is as good as Therabreath or if its still one that you would refrain from. Thank you!!!
My general recommendation is Closys sensitive but Therabreath Gum Health also works well. However, you really need to have a license dental provider determine if it is just gingivitis. Over the counter rinses need to be used in conjunction with professional care, and may not solve underlying problems.
@@DentistrywithDerik Cetylpyridinium Chloride (0.05%) does this stain teeth?! Thank you. I read somewhere it’s rare or doesn’t if it’s in clear liquid? Confused !
Dr. Ellie recommends ACT and Listerine mouthwashes as part of her oral care regimen, which, according to this video, are to be avoided. She also recommends Closys which is a recommended mouthwash in this video.
She indicates the Listerine does not harm the teeth if it is taken immediately after brushing because of the toothpaste protective layer. Regarding ACT, I guess she is using a different formulation because she is aware of the acidity risk and indicates ACT should be used as the last rinse to get rid of the Listerine. I am not saying this is all correct information, but this is what she is saying.
@@DentistrywithDerik Thank you - I think I remember now Dr ellie saying it was the english version. However you can't get it here in Hungary unless you want to pay a high shipping cost and sometimes taxes. She also suggested Act anticavity so I;m not sure who to trust. I already bought the ACT ages ago but only used it a couple of time because it seemed to make my gums worse.
Nice! I remember a couple years ago listerine was compounding my gum pain and I went to the dentist they sold me some stuff that was gentle and non abrasive and now I never use listerine and I always side eye crest and Colgate products. But since I haven’t been to the dentist in a while my gum pain is back and I had to push my current dentist appointment forward for circumstances out of my control and was at the store looking for something non abrasive and I’m glad I picked thera breath because everything else there was on your no go list. It seems to help alot but it does have a chemical aftertaste that takes a while to go away. Not sure if it’s the mint or the cpc but my gums inflammation has gone down and the pain has subsided a bit.
I am using Peridex for gingivitis prescribed by my dentist. It's on your list of mouthwashes NOT to use. So what should I do? Try something else. It's going to stain my teeth and the hygenist will remove the stains at my next cleaning. What do you recommend I do?
Dentists and dental hygienists frequently have differences of opinion on products. Peridex (Chlorhexidine gluconate) is a prescription rinse, that has been used for years, but is falling out of favor with the rise of newer products, largely due to its staining side effects. You should absolutely follow the advice of your provider, but generally speaking, that rinse is intended for the short term, not the long term. As long you use it as directed, erosion is unlikely.
I am phobic to chemicals and so far I am ash user and breath free of antibacterials byproduct. Dr even if you share nice information , I got tough to change my mind soon ! thanks .
Why do dentists use the Listerine and Crest mouthwashes in their offices with their patients? What can you share about the Sensodyne Pro-Enamel mouthwash?
I ordered a bottle of the Sensodyne Pronamel mouthwash and will test the pH. I’ll post a #short video on the subject after I’ve researched it. Your first question will require a longer video, but I will get to it :)
I was just wondering as I have quite sensitive teeth and suffering from sensitive teeth such as to cold and hot beverages and some slight sensitive gums in some places around gum in my mouth I found here in UK there is a brand called Ultradex mouthwash other than common Listerine or Oral B also another recommendation was to use Sensodyne mouthwash just like Sensodyne toothpaste which is renowned for their toothpaste for patients like myself with sensitive teeth or gums. I was therefore wondering if you or anyone knows about Ultradex brand mouthwash and if it's any good/ okay for patients especially like myself with sensitive teeth but also at same time having suffering with epilepsy for many years and daily chronic migraines and or other health issues which can cause difficulty in brushing teeth or other daily activities due to being forgetful, unstable etc. Kind regards, Tom from UK.😊

THE ONE’S ON THE “BAD LIST” ARE THE ONE’S MY DENTIST RECOMMENDS?!?!?! I watched this twice… I can’t believe how much I’ve been led astray. I see the posters in the dentist office about acidity and have changed what I eat/drink based on this info… WHY CONTINUE TO RECOMMEND BAD MOUTHWASH?!?!?
That’s a great question! Sadly a lot of providers don’t give it much thought and worse the companies that make these products heavily leverage their influence in dental offices.
Invaluable information! I appreciate your time to do the research and share your findings. I am.going to share this. We have our health system backward here. Dental should be more affordable, and there should be more information.on product labels, as our mouth and teeth are the gateway to good health. Can't eat a healthy diet with deteriorating teeth and oral health problems!
You are very right about our health system being backwards! We need to be more focused on affordable prevention so that expensive restorative treatments are less necessary :)
It can be different for two primary reasons: 1. Formulation Differences: The presence of other ingredients can affect the final pH. These could include buffers, stabilizers, flavoring agents, sweeteners, and other active ingredients intended to target different oral health issues. 2. Concentration of Active Ingredient: The concentration of the active ingredient can influence the pH. Higher concentrations might require adjustments in the formula to maintain a pH that’s safe and comfortable for oral tissues.
Is the risk posed by acidic mouthwashes that severe? It’s my understanding that an acidic environment is formed multiple times a day by the foods we eat, even barring more acidic culprits like coffee, high sugar foods, etc. Can’t we just rinse with water (at least for antiseptic mouthwashes) afterwards, like we would after a meal, to mitigate the risk? Asking out of curiosity, and also because I just bought a 3 pack of crest from Sam’s
You are correct about the acidic environments created by frequent snacking and sipping of foods/beverages. Rinsing with water after a snack or an acidic beverage is the easiest way to neutralize your saliva's pH levels, and is something I encourage all my patients to do. There really is no reason to add further causes for erosion in an acidic mouthwash which is why i only recommend rinses that are pH+. The damage might be minor, but it will be cumulative. My goal is help patients keep their teeth for a lifetime. Hope that answers your question :)
I have been using Crest gum health mouthwash for about two months and my already sensitive teeth have started hurting in the last week. If I stop using these will my teeth go back to the way they were or is the damage already done and they will always hurt like this now? I'm so upset that I did something I thought was good for me and it made everything worse. 😭
I just bought Listerine and ACT a week ago to start a system recommended by another Dentist. I also bought Closys too. The Listerine and ACT will have to be trashed, thankfully they didn't cost much. What is your thoughts on Xylitol? And what toothpaste do you recommend? I'll look and see if I can find some info on your other videos.
Xylitol is an alcohol sugar that cavity-causing bacteria cannot metabolize. Using it in dental products is a safe way of reducing cavity risk. Just know it is toxic to dogs.
I heard that fluoride rinses need to be slightly acidic to lightly etch the tooth so they can absorb the fluoride and make your teeth resistant to acid and decay…..
Because fluroapetatite is stronger than the type of apetite that teeth are made of. Sorry I’m a barber not a dentist but you should understand what I’m saying
@@itsaaronlolz that’s actually a misconception - a negative pH environment is needed for a cavity to form. Carifree CTX3, Closys Silver and Therabreath “Healthy Smile” are all pH+ fluoride rinses that don’t run the risk of erosion or acid sensitivity.
I am not understanding this. Why is the pH of something you swish around in your mouth for thirty seconds relevant at all? What is the baseline pH of your mouth, and how long will the duration of the pH change within your mouth after use of a mouthwash be? What about the pH of food and drinks? How would the significance of a low pH mouthwash compare to basic eating and drinking throughout the day? Should people not consume citrus fruits whatsoever?

Could be used Closys before the toothpaste and RT-3 after for risk of cavities? So essential both over the same session?
Do Closys Ultra sensitive is ok too?
Yes to both your questions
I heard that on avergae women have more acidic mouths than men too so may be even more important! I want to see tootpaste and mouthwash studies done comparing efficacy of products for women compared to men!
Hi Derik, thanks a lot for the informative video! I understand that all mouthwashes containing fluoride are acidic because the chemical reaction for fluoride to bond (sorry if that’s not the correct term) only happens in an acidic environment. Can you confirm if that’s the case, ie there’s actually a trade-off between fluoride mouthwash and neutral/alkaline rinses?
No, all fluoride rinses are not acidic. Carifree, Closys and Therabreath all make pH+ fluoride rinses
more skincare products are putting the ph on their labels now. maybe they should do that with mouthwashes also.
They should! However, their marketing teams would never approve the idea, as it would almost certainly cause a loss in revenue.
Thank you so much for the wonderful video! I was wondering which THERABREATH version is the best one to use to protect enamel and exposed Dentin? THERABREATH has a few different options. May you please recommend the one that's best for enamel protection and repair? Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful! The pink bottle with the bright orange cap. It’s called “Healthy Smile”.
Wow! Thank you for getting back to me so quickly and for the helpful advice - I really appreciate it. @@DentistrywithDerik
Huh?!?! But waht do you do when one Dentist says yes to Antiseptic Listerine Cool Mint and you say no? Glad I saw this while I still have the receipt!
dr ellie recommends to use coolmint listerine on daily basis.pls tell me about this.i so started using it daily feom past 3 months.
what's the best mouthwash for gingivitis ?
My general recommendation is Closys sensitive but Therabreath Gum Health also works well. However, you really need to have a license dental provider determine if it is just gingivitis. Over the counter rinses need to be used in conjunction with professional care, and may not solve underlying problems.
Is it fluoride or gingivitis ingredients that make it acidic or the alcohol in some what's good for gingivitis but also ph balanced
“Closys Sensitive” or “Therabreath Gums” would be an appropriate choice.
What therabreath do you recommend? They have several
This one for cavities amzn.to/3ncmxOw
This one for gum disease/gingivitis amzn.to/3Z2eReN
Thank you!!
Learning so much! Thank you!
ACT is not in the UK shame
I've been using Dr.Ellie's protocol. Now I am wondering if I should stop.
ONE DENTIST WILL TELL YOU ONE THING WHILE THE OTHER DENTIST WILL TELL YOU SOMETHING DIFFERENT. SO WHO DO YOU BELIEVE ?
Dr ellie doesn't have any studies to back her claims...
Equate alcohol free?
Thank you so much for answering. That helps a great deal. I don't remember the sites but will clip them here if I find them again.
Is Ultradex the same as closys but under another name?
I had not heard of UltraDex until now. It appears to be a British product line, but from what I can tell, it seems to be the same as Closys
Glad you saw some improvement!
@@DentistrywithDerik yes sir! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video Derek!
Can you comment on thymol as a mouthwash? Thanks
Kind regards,
Tom from UK.😊
What do you think of Plax mouth rinse immediately before brushing?
Initial investigation shows its pH+ but I need to look into it more
This is mostly an issue for people that have decreased flow of saliva, like older people on alot of medications, people undergoing cancer treatment, etc.
Yes it is, but it remains a contributing factor for erosion on young and healthy teeth as well.
@@DentistrywithDerik Why are so many mouthwashes formulated to be acidic? Obviously, it helps shelf stability, but is that the only reason?
@@Magnulus76 Some rinses like Listerine were developed back in the 1800's when our knowledge of their effects were limited. As science progresses, it becomes necessary to make changes. Unfortunately changing product formulas on well-known brands presents marketing risks for manufacturers.
@@DentistrywithDerik So, you're essentially saying that in the 2020's we still use formulas from the 1800's and have denied the advances in science. Thanks Mr RUclips "doctor".
Hii not sure if u still replying to comments, but I plan on getting the “Hello gingivitis Mouthwash” i want to prevent my receding gums from getting worse. It has aloe Vera and coconut oil in it, no alcohol in it as well. Do you think it’s safe for my teeth and gums and low ph?
My best recommendation for gum issues is first seeing a qualified dental hygienist and using Closys toothpaste/rinse.
@@DentistrywithDerikhow effective are salt water gargles? How long / often can you use them? After a teeth clean I was told to rinse as gums were but swollen. She didn’t say how long for. It seemed to be indefinite / until next visit. Which is months away. Won’t this erode enamel? Thank you
A question regarding Closys and sites listing tooth staining. ?? I really like the Closys but in looking it up online some sites mention tooth staining as a "common" side effect. What is that about? I have stopped using it because I don't want staining. Can you clear this up? Thank you.
You’re welcome to forward me the information from those sites, but Closys not only does not stain, it can actually mildly improve the appearance of your teeth.
Great informative video !. Regards.
Thanks!
how about if you have peridontal disease? therabreath kept my gums somewhat too red. does it take a while to see results?
Have you seen a licensed dental hygienist or dentist for gum therapy? Seeking professional assistance is absolutely essential in oral health.
Which mouth wash best for damon braces?
Carifree CTX3. Many patients with braces experience demineralization around their brackets -- this can help to minimize it. (Good choice on the Damon braces btw, I used them for my ortho treatment)
I use therabreath it was very good
What about adding alkali drops to acidic rinses?
I haven’t looked into that, but will for sure.
Thank you i just received a bottle of crest pro health mouthwash definitely will not be using it
Hi. What is the pH level in Colgate Plax Ice Infinity?
I have never seen Colgate Plax available for purchase in the US. Colgate does offer different versions of the products in different countries. Unfortunately I don’t have the pH for that particular product. You can purchase a pH tester and identify it’s relative pH from home.
@@DentistrywithDerik Yeah I live in Argentina, but the product might be made in Brazil.
@@DentistrywithDerik can hydrogen peroxide be used as a mouth wash?
@@mariorico440 it can be (as long as the manufacture's instructions are followed with regard to dilution), but the pH levels can still be under 6.5, making it less than ideal.
really important but very sad to see you didn't discuss whether alcohol in the rinse played a part...you mention colgate and crest rinses as having high ph's, but i use the non-alcohol versions, but do not know by your report whether that makes a difference. would love to hear back here if you have that info.

How does an anti-microbial mouthwash help with tonsil stones?
It won’t get rid of them, but it can lessen the load of pathogens in the oral cavity, thus lowering some of the causes of bad breath. Tonsil stones are magnets for these pathogens and allow bad breath to continue. An ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist is probably your best resource in this area. cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0239/7795/1296/files/CloSYSRinseMalodorManagement.pdf?17559244125054379664

Can Closys be used daily?
Definitely!
Do you know if Dr Jen's mouth rinse is safe to use?
Thank you so much for this video!
Most people don't take advantage of input gain, not Derik, he uses that shit to the fullest, so we can hear him
isn't that ironic that peridex is prescribed or sold to you by the dentist?
Can you please help with concerns to products in South Africa... Cause half of the products mentioned in the video are not found locally in south africa
I wish I could. Unfortunately I don’t have access to product lines in South Africa. They best thing I can recommend in this circumstance is to avoid any containing alcohol or test them with a pH testing strip.
Is it okay to just use toothpaste as mouthwash? I swish the toothpaste in my mouth and spit it.
How do I check if Hello mouthwash is safe?
It has one of the lowest pH levels on the market. I never recommend it.
I had an appointment and they would not call me back had to go through and find out how to deal with my teeth
if 2 of these have the same active ingredients - then how is the ph level different ?
It can be different for two primary reasons:
Just bought a bottle of therabreath
I have been using Crest gum health mouthwash for about two months and my already sensitive teeth have started hurting in the last week. If I stop using these will my teeth go back to the way they were or is the damage already done and they will always hurt like this now? I'm so upset that I did something I thought was good for me and it made everything worse. 😭
If the cause was the rinse, switching to a pH+ rinse will help
Thank you!!!!! Very very important info!
My pleasure!
Thank you this helped tremendously
You're welcome!

I think you can watch the video he recommended
