The yogic teaching of Asteya literally translates as non-stealing and asks us to enquire about all of the subtle and insidious ways in which we may steal in our lives. Usually it's not overt theft but hidden within our condition thoughts around scarcity or lack. When we think we don't have enough or that deep down we are not enough just as we are, then we may be inclined to want to steal what we feel we lack. We may steal attention, interrupt others in conversation, or take undue credit all because deep down we feel a sense of lack within. In our practise on the mat, we may 'steal' poses. We may push our body further than it is capable of, further than what the body is offering us in the moment. This teaching isn't just commanding us not to steal but teaches that everything we ever need is always provided to us and that if we just allow the space for it, what is meant for us will come according to our karma. By engaging what comes whole-heartedly and with gratitude we connect to the omnipressent abundance that already exists within us and is the source for receiving all ratna (jewels) on the path of our dharma.
