  • What's up guys/gals, in this video I am making my own composite decking plugs. The project was to add a step to an existing composite deck, the problem was I didn't have any left over composite decking plugs to hide the ugly screw holes. These plugs are not sold individually (unless you want to pay someone on eBay $18 for a few), but rather sold in large quantities priced upwards of $80. The solution was to purchase a set of plug bits and make my own plugs out of left over composite decking. The plugs were $4-$5 from Harbor Freight and I used my hand drill to make my plugs.
    I hope you find this video helpful on how to fill in screw holes in composite decking by making your own composite plugs.

    Thank you, this solves the problem of old screw holes in composite. I didn't know I could make my own plugs.

    Reverse the drill bit for a second on the material and then go forward and it'll see it's all fine

      @@TrueGritDevelopment if I could add one thing I put 2 boards face to face and drilled the plug from the back of the board all the way through then cut the plugs length down after. This made the face of the plug perfect everytime, thanks again for the video you saved me some $$

      Did that make it easier to drill? What was your objective from putting them f2f?

    Thanks! So for the next step, how did you notch out the hole for the screw. Do you pull the screw out and then use the same tool?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад +1

      U bet. Take the screw out and use a drill bit that is the same size as the plug (be careful not to use a bigger bit) I would also try this on a scrap piece. Hope this answers your question. Pls consider liking the vid and subbing to channel, goes a long way. Much appreciated 👊🏼

    I have a 2 tone deck and used the Trex fasteners but for the stairs I needed plugs. I bought the Trex plugs for main color but didn’t want to spend the money for the secondary color seeing as I only needed about 20 plugs. I bought the cutter set off Amazon however the 1/4 inch is too small and the 3/8 is too big. The Trex plugs are somewhere in between and need to be tapped in with a rubber hammer. These swim in the hole. Any advice? Thanks.

      I just found out the right size is 5/16.

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад

      So you all set? If not, I would use the 3/8 and make the deck screw holes match. You can use a 3/8 bit. If necessary you can take out the screw, make the hole bigger than put the screw back in. Hope you all set.

    • @wayneprivett1997

      @@TrueGritDevelopment Thanks. I just ordered the 5/16 bit. Making the hole 3/8 is not an option as the composite screw heads are 5/16 in diameter. Thanks for your reply just the same. Great post tho. Cheers!

    We are using deck screws with 1/4" heads, using the Starborn Pro Plug tool to drive them in.
    We made a few plugs with a 1/4" plug cutter, the exact same set shown in the video we got at Harbor Freight.
    The plugs go into the holes ok, light tap with a hammer, but the plug can be pushed further into the hole with a light finger press, it doesn't stay flush with the surface of the decking.
    I don't get how we make plugs the perfect length to not be pushed further into the hole too much, or if the plugs should be slightly bigger diameter...5/16" plug cutter...so that they fit tighter in the hole? Please help!

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад +1

      What I would do is make sure the screw hole is the same size as the plug. If you’re using 1/4” plug hole bit, use a 1/4” bit. If the screws are already in, pick the next size up for the plug and use a matching size bit to ensure the holes will match the plug snug. Use a scrap piece to make sure you won’t mess up your decking. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

      @@TrueGritDevelopment Hi, thanks for the quick reply! Yes we are playing with a small piece of decking we cut off...great suggestion.
      We are using 1/4" on everything, but the plugs don't fit tight.
      Since we are using this Starborn Pro Plug tool to drive in the screws and set them down to what is supposed to be the correct depth, maybe it is making a slightly larger hole than the 1/4" head of the screw...it wouldn't take much to not let the plug fit snugly.
      I think our next thing to try is getting a 5/16" plug cutter bit. Thanks again.

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад +1

      Ok, so I would try different size drill bits on the scrap piece until you find the right fit. My plugs were very snug. If your screws are already in and the 1/4” is too loose, you may have to go 5/16 plug and make the screw holes a bit bigger. I think you’re on the right track. Good luck 👍🏽

    U r close but there is way faster way to do it. Rip tne deck to 3/8 wide and use plug cutter and drill all the way through so u dont have to pick them out with chisel

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад +2

      Haha…I would agree. This is really for when you need a few plugs. In my case I added 2 steps to my existing deck and couldn’t find where I can buy just a few for a reasonable price. Only option was to buy an entire box from my local supply store and that would have cost me around $80. It’s also useful when you loose a few of your existing plugs from wear and tear over time. Thanks for watching 👊🏼

    How do you fix a Trex deck board chip?

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  Год назад

      That’s a tough one. The obvious answer is to replace it. Maybe try bondo? U would need to texture it if necessary and then paint it with matching paint color (exterior paint obviously). Good luck.

    bro - just use some scrap wood and cut a hole out of it with this to make a guide. That's what I do anyhow and it works

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  11 месяцев назад

      But it would match the finish? I suppose you stain the wood?

    • @helimax
      @helimax 11 месяцев назад

      Scrap wood with hole as a guide. To stop the tool moving around before it bites. Then put the guide on top of your deck board. That way you rev up the drill then plunge it through the guide fast and plug takes half a second to make.

      Haha of course. The video is for missing or replacement decking screw caps. Typically these come in bags of many and they’re pricey. The video is meant to address the need for a few screw caps.
