In this video we take a look at the deck plus composite deck screw by Hillman. In our opinion, these are the best screws to use for your Trex deck or composite deck project. They can be purchased at your local hardware store or using our Amazon link above. These deck screws are self tapping and do not leave the mushrooming affect that traditional deck screws leave when used on composite decking. We hope this video makes your Trex deck project easier. Thanks so much for watching.

Thanks for the video and clarifying that we need to use the proper screws when working with composite material. I learned the hard way.

Why not just use the color matched trex screws?

And then 2 years later when the Trex board warps and pulls away from the heads, you're left to ponder Plan B. In my case pre-drilled chamfered holes with outdoor coated deck screws. Looks ugly, but banking on functional.

Would you recommend using an impact drill?

Question: I am removing these screws in order to get under my deck for repairs. What I am finding is that the screws are so bonded to the Trex material that the heads are stripping when I try to remove them on about 40% of the boards. Any idea how to extract these without having to drill them out? Thanks😊

Should they be pre drilled to avoid some of the problems in the comments?

The identical design but from other manufactures include a 1/8th drill bit and specificcaly say to pre-drill through the deck board of course only. I saw on his box it said NO predrilling, but you can see the slight mushrooming results. That material HAS to go somewher!! Not a problem AT ALL when predrilling!!

Be careful with that Amazon link. Some of the screws for sale there are not the same and will split your laminate boards.

I have a few of thise screws that did not sink all the way. How csn I ge them out? They just spin and they are not stripped but impossible to get out.

Sounds like they may have inserted down into a void where the threads are not catching. This can be a bit tough, but we found success if you can find the bottom portion of the screw and push up from that end to gain leverage. We’ve also found a cat paw tool has helped as well in the past to gain leverage from the top.

These screws have a reverse thread on the upper portion near the head of the screw, try spinning them SLOW with the drill in forward direction, but don't put down pressure on the drill, they should start to back out, once you get reverse thread portion of the screw out, you can put the drill in reverse and it should back the screw the rest of the way out.

@@adamst.michel9468 yeah but then you’re left with a gaping hole. I hate these screws. Some sink some get to a point and just spin leaving the head above the decking.

Iv put in over 2500 in the last week and not stripped or broke a single one. Some my m18 milwakee can't even screw in cause the wood is to hard and the still haven't broke. I stand behind these all day!
