I first encountered you as a treble and was taken by your ability to sing and sing well in a variety of languages. Your voice change has been handled well and you seem to have a healthy view of what lies ahead. And you do have a few years during which you can explore. Congratulations on past success and best wishes going forward, from Canada. Happy new year, you're already there, we'll be along shortly.

You've got such a great mindset, I think what you say is so true "keep singing" it's the best way to keep the voice in shape and have it grow and develop. Your attitude will carry you far especially as you move through the end of your education through to a career someday. All the best!

It's very generous of you to share this, Antonio! I'm amazed how much things have changed since giants roamed the earth. Back in the day, trebles were told that singing during the voice change would irreparably damage them, and they should wait a couple of years to see whether they were a tenor, a baritone, or a bass. 😱
Anyway, I hope that Juilliard is in your future!

Thanks for the note Steve. My parents encouraged me to transition to contemporary ahead of the change so that I had music to work on and work through and we've always done it hand in hand with my vocal coaches. My parents have put a lot of work in researching and laying a path for me to explore. They have backed me with the move to Sydney this year so the ball is now in my court to put the work in to make it happen. Juilliard or Guildhall are certainly aspirations, a lot will depend on what happens with my voice and what I can achieve when I'm settled around 16 or 17.

As a prime example of what @Toxophilus spoke-of, let me take the opportunity to share a delightful vintage clip that Antonio and others may appreciate. Stuart Burrows advising young Aled Jones, from *Omnibus: The Treble | BBC 1, 1985*

[~ 54 : 39 :] Burrows: "...the voice breaks as they call it...I wouldn't contemplate singing...for four years-- it depends on when the voice--"
      Jones: Not at all?
Burrows: No, not at all. I know, it's agony because one wants to sing because you're musical. /Mentally/, you think you can do it but you're body tells you, /physically/, that you can't.
Jones: When will I know that I must stop singing?
Burrows: This is a very good question. It's the /million dollar/ question, isn't it? Because you'll find... [Burrows' voice fades-out]
[We then hear Jones narrating off-camera, as the footage of him with Burrows continues for another several seconds before switching to Jones having his bow tie fastened by his mother just before he is about to go on stage with Burrows.]
Jones: I just can't think of myself not being able to sing, having to be quiet for five years, 'cuz when I'm at home, I just sing every minute of the day, something or other.

Very nice gift to other singers going through changes! Thank you! (BTW, girls also undergo big changes, although not as dramatic.)

Hi Susan, you're absolutely right I remember my friend Jess, who i did the Lloyd Weber Pie Jesu duet with, saying how her range contracted and things started to move around in the range a bit before settling again. Thanks for listening and commenting 😀👍

It’s awesome that you are so musically minded. When my voice changed and I could sing really low I still quasi worked on my upper range. Not so much as technically working on it but just through singing the high parts in songs. It’s weird I know. I grew up listening to an all guy group called The Nylons from Canada. I’d sing the bass part as I was a bass, but then also sing the lead part to keep the range that I had. A couple of the guys could really get up there. I was part of choir and a all guy octet and we were heading to Newberg, Oregon for a vocal ensemble adjudication (district vocal ensemble competition) and my mom was playing a Nylons tape and I was just randomly sing different parts and I was singing a particular high part in a song getting really up there, and my mom asked my little brother James if he was singing. And he said no, so it kinda shocked my mom that it was me singing that high. My mom not realizing that I could still somewhat sing that high. In context, I was 18 at the time and mom knew obviously that I sang double bass at school, and my littlest brother James was 8. That’s why she thought James was singing the high parts. And those were only 2 of the 4 music groups I was in, in high school. I was also 1st chair trumpet in symphonic band and lead trumpet in jazz band. Man those were some great times musically for me. Even though your voice has changed I hope you continue to enjoy the music journey that you are on.

Hi Rich, thanks for sharing your story that's cool. Dad has been throwing me pop songs in the tenor register, he says "I know this isn't your wow spot now but we need to add tools, like clubs in a golf bag we need a range of them". The intention at the moment is to keep trying things out, I love the bass range but having the broader range is fun, as you say when listening to the Nylons, being able to cover all the parts is cool. Dad has a pop song on my challenge list which will stretch the range to be done as a solo, I'll let you know what it is if I pull it off 😀 Moving to Sydney should also open up the chance to be part of some groups
