    The black and white episodes with Emma Peel were the best. IMO the show also improved in the quality of the filming also. I had or have a hard time following the earlier TV versions with Honor Blackman do to the early TV technology perhaps. I always found it was like looking through a small window and much of the scenes to focused on the faces and not the surroundings. I wished Diana would have found a way she could have pursued her other interests while still playing Emma Peel, at least for another couple seasons. I miss the Avengers to this day and still remember the night I sat down to watch it and it was gone. If I remember right I was wondering wth was with this Love American Style thing. I was devastated.

      Wow...you're taking me back with your comment. I remember "Love American Style" and I was not a fan of it either. When "The Avengers" was on (during its original run) I was quite young (QUITE, QUITE young!) and I was forced to go to bed by that time of night. I watched it in later years. It was a great show.

      I think the pre-Emma-Peel episodes were recorded in the old British 405-line TV standard that dated to the 1930s. They did indeed look quite murky. Once Diana Rigg came on board, they switched to film. So even that first monochrome season with her looks spectacular.

    If you truly call yourself a fan of Diana Rigg, you are truly doing yourself a disservice not seeing her perform in her "Queen of Thorns" persona in Game of Thrones. She truly triumphed in this role, with her razor sharp wit, her cunning survival skills and her fierce family loyalty even to the end and stole just about every scene she was in,,,, While most older women are relegated to lesser roles because they aged older and less visual, she took the reins and rode every scene as hard as she could. She is truly missed.

    • @angelaraber
      @angelaraber Год назад +4

      She was absolutely brilliant in GOT and stole every scene she was in. She the best lines and her performance was flawless. I was so impressed. I grew up watching The Avengers and Emma Peel was one of the very few women role models at the time. Not like all the female super heroes we have now. There was no one else like her back then. The last thing I saw her in was in season one of the new PBS version of All Creatures Great and Small. She just played a small part but of course she was wonderful. Sadly she passed away and was replaced in the second season. She was a great lady and a great actress. 🌹🥂

      Never say a disservice regarding Diana Rigg and I in the same sentence. Please. It's almost an insulting thing to say, I could tell you about her things you did not know regarding her, and she was a complex utterly charming woman whom I admired greatly and accepted your questioning out of respect for her memory and my respect to her and her craft, as we arr all her supporters here.
      Rock on Diana! 🤟

    Nice work. Thank you very much. I would like to remember that this year also died Honor Blackman (Cathy Gale). She was very good but Diana Rigg and her creation of the character of Mrs, Peel was unique and unforgettable. The show changed during its firsts.seasons but when Diana arrived its was a revolution. She was awesome and resulted an upgrade for the show, included the character of John Steed that with Diana as a partner reached his best and final version. I was a teenager when the show was premiered in my country fifty years ago and up to day I`m still being a fan, Mrs. Peel and The Avengers walk together me across my life and I must feel lucky for that. Since Diana's deaths I've been viewing once more time the chapters with Diana and I'am still touched. So, I only can say: "Mrs. Peel & Steed, you're needed".

    She was my first crush as a boy. My favorite episodes are the ones where some psycho isnt trying to kill her. There was one about a town that was trying to raise an army underground. She escaped from a cell, took out a woman and two men and then wiped out an entire firing squad just before they were going to kill Steed.

    The Avengers series was written for 2 men, they tweaked it a bit for Honor Blackman & Diana Rigg. That explains a lot Judo, assertiveness a lot of pants outfits etc. It was a lovely trick that worked quite well. The feminists went ga ga over it. Diana was not a feminist, she wanted equal pay as a right of handwork . She was a very disciplined person. Patrick was a WW II , combat veteran, British PT torpedo boats. Around D-Day he came down with bronchitis, while in hospital, his boat was lost with all hands in combat. See Wikipedia for details.

    I grew up in the 50’s and when the Avengers came on tv in the 60’s it was so refreshingly exciting to watch and Diana was my favourite Avenger girl. I was amazed to find out that she had smoked something like 20 cigarettes a day since she was 18, what a shame as I’m sure this contributed to her looking older prematurely and her final demise Sadly missed.

    Dame Diana Rigg was a great actress with wit and great comedic timing, She also seemed to enjoy scandal she lived with a man before it became fashionable, when she was older she literally said hopefully I have one good scandal left in me. Patrick Macnee said she was very naughty which I have always been curious about. I am a huge Emma Peel Avenger fan, I think Honor Blackman was good as well but the video quality of those episodes was poor, luckily the Diana Rigg episodes were filmed on 35mm and are of good quality, and the chemistry between Emma Peel and John Steed was perfect.

    Thanks for this video. I really enjoyed it; a wonderful tribute to a unique actress. I was extremely saddened to hear of Diana's death. As a child growing up in south London I watched The Avengers when it first came out, starring Patrick McNee, first with Ian Hendry, then Honor Blackman, and then Diana Rigg. It reached it's peak IMO during Diana Rigg's tenure. As well as Diana's superb acting the series was blessed during this period with imaginative writing from Brian Clemens, who wrote several episodes, including my favorite, "The House that Jack Built". So glad you included this brilliantly surrealistic episode in your top five. I never get tired of watching it. I also like it because in this episode she beats the (deceased) villain and escapes without Steed's help. I would have replaced two of your other choices with "The Town That Never Was", Emma's first episode, and "The Hour that Never Was", but there are so many superlative episodes it is difficult to choose, and we all have our favorites. Linda Thorson was good but Diana was an impossible act to follow. Thanks again!

      Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, there are so many great episodes, it's hard to choose. Cathy, what a fitting tribute! I usually avoid them but pleased I watched yours. I caught onto The Avengers while in high school when it first ran on the US ABC-TV network. A real game-changer for me, as Diana and Mrs. Peel helped teach me that a beautiful woman could be much more than just a pretty face and great shape, with intelligence, wit and the ability to take care of herself. That fact that she had it all drove that point home even more. That was quite and education for this then fifteen year old teen and it stood me well all the years since in both my business life and personal life. Some of the criminals they fought were complete oddballs. I remember _The Hidden Tiger_ , where an organization called P.U.R.R.R. was turning people’s pet cats into killers. Also I thought of _You’ll Catch Your Death_ , where a deadly concentrated cold virus is making victims sneeze themselves to death. Of course that last one was from the Tara King episodes. Linda Thorson remains under-appreciated because Diana Rigg was such a hard act to follow.

    Diana Rigg was the second female lead in the Avengers after Honor Blackman and before Linda Thorson. When she left the entire series began to spiral down without her. There was something about Mrs. Peel as a female lead that only Diana Rigg could bring to the part. Intelligent, witty, with a sultry sexiness that appealed to both men and women.

    That so many men of a certain age, including me, say 'Mrs Peel was my first crush', has made it a cliche. I've long thought Murdersville is the best episode, nice location with lots of action, the plot not too outlandish, and she is in virtually every scene.

    When I see the words “The Avengers”, I immediately think of Steed and Peel, not those American superhero characters. (Yes, I remember Honour Blackman, too.)
    Many years ago (long before you were born, my dear) I was living in a bedsit in Putney. An ex-musician lived in the same house. He was ex because he had tragically gone deaf. (Going deaf is not fun for anyone, but it must be worse for musicians.) When the phone rang, I would answer it for him. He could read my lips, so I could pass on calls to him. And some of the calls were from showbiz people he had worked with. One call was from Diana Rigg. I did tell her I was a great fan before passing on the messages to the deaf bloke.

    3:18 I would count Emma Peel as John Steed’s fifth partner.
    The origin of the series had Steed as some kind of shadowy figure to do with law enforcement. He meets up with Ian Hendry as Doctor David Keel, whose wife has been murdered by a gang of organized criminals. Steed offers him the chance to work together to take down the gang, and thereby avenge the death of his wife (hence the title of the series).
    After Ian Hendry left at the end of the first season, Dr Keel was replaced by a rotating set of three different sidekicks: one a doctor (presumably to use up the leftover Dr Keel scripts), another a young woman, Venus Smith, who worked as a jazz singer in a nightclub, and the third, an anthropologist named Cathy Gale, played by Honor Blackman.
    Then, the first two were dropped, and Cathy Gale became the only sidekick.
    After she left to become a Bond girl, the hunt was on for a new sidekick. The character would be named “Emma Peel”, as in “M[an] appeal”. A suitable actress was found, named Elizabeth Shepherd.
    After filming one whole episode and a part of another, the decision was made that she wasn’t right for the part. So she was let go, and the hunt resumed. This was when Diana Rigg was hired. And nobody remembers that anybody else could have played the part.

    • @AScreenwritersJourney
      @AScreenwritersJourney  11 месяцев назад +1

      Wow! This is great information! I would have loved to have seen Venus Smith. I saw two (?) of the original episodes from the first year somehow - in-studio shoots. It's amazing how quickly the quality improved with the show.

    • @lawrencedoliveiro9104

      @@AScreenwritersJourney Apparently only two Ian Hendry episodes survive. Videotape was expensive back then, and so lots of early TV episodes were wiped so the tapes could be used again. But everything from the second season onwards is still around.
