Great channel, I have a good number of engines and I acquired a all original 5 hp monarch DB that is in about the same cosmetic shape as the sandwich in this video. My question is what is your preference to wipe engines down with to get the nice “wet” look like that?
depends on several factors and the end goal. if you have 60to100% of your original paint id use something with low acid properties to help keep the paint longer as penetrating oil, diesel, and kerosene have a lot of damaging properties to old paint and decals. so a plain mineral oil in a hot summer day to soak in really well would work the best, some say linseed oil but that hardens when dry and makes a mess a lot faster. if its less paint more rust then things like diesel, kerosene, and penetrants work great. on this engine since it was plain and little paint left I just went with kerosene as it also allowed me to scrub the grease off with the same solution. now that being said just kerosene won't leave a "wet" look it will darken the tone of the engine but eventually dry out to just be matte finish and dry. if you want the wet finish you would either need to use more to re-wet it penetrants last the longest if you want to recoat diesel and kero evaporate faster. or use a thick oil like mineral oil or motor oil, this will give its own problems as the more wet looking it gets the more dust will stick when it is sitting around. you could also clear coat something for a wet look but it will not look as nice.
Terrific engine, looking like a winner, love the sound of those old hit and miss engines. Thanks for posting 👍👍🇦🇺
Keep bringing them on 😁👍👍🇺🇸
Oh to be young with a good back again!
didnt really do anything to heavy for my back in this. cranking the engine is more of an arm workout then back.
Great video👍
Coś pięknego ten silnik.
Thank you again
great vid....thanks....
I love hit and miss engines! Keep 'em coming!
Please make more videos👍
..I wish I had your talent.
Great Engine, great video, where are you finding parts for a Sandwich?
I know a guy that has a 3 hp Sandwich, but wants to much for money for it. Anyway that's what collectors I no keep telling me.
Keep up the good work Bud👍
the only parts I've been buying for it are from flywheel supply. but they are generic parts like rings and crush rings. not many places have sandwich parts so things like pins and rollers ill make myself.

Thanks Buddy 👍
Looks good! Just curious whether you'd use a square o-ring, and if it's a special high- temp one or anything like that?
I just use a normal round o rings I have thought about square but they have the risk of rolling on the rough spots and make the engine turn harder. I use neoprene o rings as they have resistance to alcohol products and petrol products aswell as a fairly tough heat tolerance. if they can use it for hydraulic cylinders they can work for mild pressures from combustion
I forgot to ask,Do you leave the other ring groves empty Or put old rings back in?
Thanks in advance.
I leave them empty. If it's an engine I plan to run a lot sometimes I'll put.an old ring In The first groove and the oring behind it to help with heat
Nice vid...was wondering if you know the manufacturing year of this rig. Always curious as to how old some of the ancient iron you work on and resurrect from the dead are.
this engine is from the 1910s somewhere.
You mentioned using O rings, Are you just using 1 or are you using O rings in all 3 ring groves??
I am using one single o ring as it seals perfectly there is no need for more. With piston rings you need more then one in order to overcome the ring gap.
Thank you@@cruddycornstalks
I have another question I have a 2 1/2 HP Sandwich engine just like the one you show here, My question is: Weight of the Governor pulls in the latch out. Am I missing something that would pull it back out once the engine has slowed?? Once Latched out, It says there. And engine costes to a stop. The cam will bump it so it can release, But no tension on arm or whatever to pull out of latch out catch.
Thanks in advance.
You need a couple lamps overhead. Many shadows
