Engine Running On GUNPOWDER

  • I Run the see-through engine on gunpowder and film it in slow motion with the high-speed camera to see exactly what happens when an engine runs gunpowder instead of gasoline the results were nothing short of entertaining and amazing.
    this was a viewer request to try and run the see-through engine on black powder or gunpowder.
    I first had to rig up the engine and build some sort of delivery system to introduce the black powder into the engine while I was running, it was quite a challenge to actually get it to work, originally I attempted but it did not work and then I figured out a better solution which I show in this video.
    I got it to work and the results were spectacular, hopefully you enjoy the video and please tell me what you think in the comments below.
    Thanks for watching !!

      Love the referrence to F&F1, but that bit told me the creators didn't know as much about engines as they wanted us to believe. Have you ever seen an intake manifold that was welded together? All the manifolds I've ever seen were cast, it would cost the manufacturer more to weld them together. One more nit to pick, have you ever used a 3/4" torque wrench on a car? That big a wrench is used on heavy machinery like bulldozers or semis, the guy who wrote the script doesn't belong in any shop! I had a very serious crush on Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), I wish I was Vin Diesel just for that moment he had his hands on those sweet cheeks, she is absolutely gorgeous to me :-)

    Gasoline: is combustible
    Black powder: is an explosive

    • @kainhall
      @kainhall 3 года назад +9

      gas can explode much like black as well..... its called "detonation" or "pinging" when its in a motor.
      .
      it sounds like someone is in your engine..... hitting the top of the piston with a hammer
      and it kinda is like a hammer blow.....
      .
      the gas explodes.... causing a much sharper (and higher) pressure curve/spike
      it can shatter pistons
      bend rods
      melt holes in pistons....
      .
      etc

    • @xeigen2
      @xeigen2 3 года назад +5

      Gunpowder is a low explosive that does not detonate but rather deflagrates (burns quickly at subsonic speed).

    • @dallynsr
      @dallynsr 3 года назад +2

      lol!
      if gas doesn't explode under compression then how does an engine run on combustion?
      that's your charcoal briquettes soaked with kerosene,..."combustion" but calls it explosion cause it burns your eyebrows off. the same stochio mixture under 8/1 compression in a bbq size box would blow the side of your house off.

    • @winstonpoplin
      @winstonpoplin 3 года назад

      @@dallynsr Look up "detonate" and "deflagrate". That should clear up your confusion. You seem to be confusing the two words. Gasoline in an engine undergoes deflagration, not detonation. There is a very specific and important difference.

    • @UTubeHandlesSuck
      @UTubeHandlesSuck 3 года назад +1

      Actually, neither gasoline nor black powder are more than low explosives, which is why powder is clearly labelled and considered a propellant which can be purchased without any sort of explosives licensing. Nice fail though.

    Looks to me like you actually smothered the engine considerably when the black powder connected- it choked the intake too much, and the engine was nearly stalled when the powder finally went off.
    The way I would have gone about it is ignored proper mixture for a moment and rigged up an apparatus to let the powder fall through the airflow when it was connected, that way the engine would still get gasoline+air for spark ignition but have the black powder for raw force.
    Also fireproofing around the powder supply. Because you had me worried that the hot exhaust right next to the powder feed was going to make a premature ignition, aim that exhaust away from your explosives!

    • @davecrupel2817
      @davecrupel2817 3 года назад

      @@jac4423 To a point i agree.
      I think to even BEGIN to make a gunpowder-powered engine work, you need to have *extremely* long cylinders, and *extremely* long piston strokes.
      And my reason for thinking this is because of the following:
      Gasoline, with the possible exception of GDI/TDI engines, has the fuel atomized and gas-like, before it enters the cylinders.
      This way it flies and flows *with the air* into the cylinders. Pretty easy thing to do with a low-viscosity liquid like gasoline or diesel fuel.
      Not so easy to do with a solid powder. Unless it's a very _very_ *very* fine lightweight powder.
      So, in my mind, you need something that runs at very low RPM, has a decent amount of time between strokes, and a slow stroke progression. To give the powder time to get into the cylinders.
      And the key to having low operating RPMs is to have bigger longer cylinders, bigger pistons, longer rods and longer strokes.
      And an appropriately designed crankshaft.
      That's why diesel engines run at lower RPMs, and also why they have considerably more torque, pound for pound, than a gasoline engine. (At the exchange of horsepower)
      I can see it being possible. But not all that practical.
      Because boy oh BOY would those need to be some seriously tough cylinders.
