Funny you say this is a song you’re walking down the street to. That is exactly what Tony Manero (sp?) - played by John Travolta- was doing at the beginning of Saturday Night Fever …. Strutting his stuff.

The Bee Gees was short for "The Brothers Gibb" - Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb were brothers. They struggled to make it for a few years until this song came out in 1977 as part of the soundtrack for the movie, *Saturday Night Fever* which they wrote all the music for, and their career took off like wildfire after that. By 1981 disco was on it's way out, but even all these years later it's obvious what the Bee Gees were geniuses at: making people want to dance - and damn if their songs didn't excel at that.

Bee Gees were world famous & successful long before 1977/Saturday Night Fever. Their 1st international hit was Massachusetts, in 1967, #1 in 13 countries. The 1975 album, Main Course (where they began singing falsetto), was their 13th studio album, spent 74 weeks on Billboard’s album chart & charted 3 singles (including a #1, Jive Talkin). 1967-1975, in the US alone; they charted 13 singles (8 top 10s), had 3 Platinum albums & were Grammy nominated for the #1 hit, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart (covered by Johnny Mathis in 1971 & Al Green in 1972). Even Janis Joplin covered them (To Love Somebody, 1969). They were in teen magazines (such as 16 & Tiger Beat) & on all the “big” TV shows including; Hollywood Palace, Ed Sullivan 3x, Johnny Carson 3x, Laugh-In, Smother’s Brothers, Andy Williams, Johnny Cash, Dick Cavett, Mike Douglas & The Midnight Special 4x. While “SNF” certainly made them bigger, by any standard, they were successful before it.

@@colonelb Yup. In fact, Bee Gees were hit with some harsh back-lash from many of their "pre-disco" fans, who felt they sold out when they "went Disco." If you're interested, there's lots of their early hits on RUclips. Here's a few; To Love Somebody, I Started A Joke, Words, Massachusetts, NY Mining Disaster, Holiday, I Gotta Get A Message To You, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart & Run To Me.

"In August 1958, the Gibb family, including older sister Lesley and infant brother Andy (born in March 1958), emigrated to Australia and settled in Redcliffe, Queensland, just north-east of Brisbane. The young brothers began performing to raise pocket money. Speedway promoter and driver Bill Goode, who had hired the brothers to entertain the crowd at the Redcliffe Speedway in 1960, introduced them to Brisbane radio-presenter jockey Bill Gates. The crowd at the speedway would throw money onto the track for the boys, who generally performed during the interval of meetings (usually on the back of a truck that drove around the track) and, in a deal with Goode, any money they collected from the crowd they were allowed to keep. Gates named the group the "BGs" (later changed to "Bee Gees") after his, Goode's and Barry Gibb's initials. The name was not specifically a reference to "Brothers Gibb", despite popular belief.[17][18][19]" Taken from the BeeGees wiki; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bee_Gees
I had always assumed the same, until I saw Barry in an interview talking about the origin, though I had forgotten the details until I looked it up.

History Check: The subject matter of 'Stayin' Alive' is about survival in the streets of New York inspired by the Nic Cohn paperback Tribal Rites of the Saturday Night who was the plot for the classic Saturday Night Fever Movie. Since 1977 it is the fifth biggest single of all time with 31 million single sold worldwide 👍
It is claimed from in a survey of all radiostations around the globe as most airplayed song of all time in 2017- every 20 seconds - this plays everywhere around the world and for sure it is the most iconic song of the 70´s decade. It’s a part of our shared cultural heritage now - one of those pop miracles that just never gets old, never wears off, never loses its charge. It remains alive. And indeed one of the most covered pop songs in history
This epic video was filmed on MGM Studios in Culver City in Hollywood California in the filmset ruins of That’s Entertainment starring Fred Astaire from 1974 during the same time when the BeeGees filming the Beatles movie, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1978 on the lot at the same time.

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
Music loud and women warm, I've been kicked around
    Since I was born
And now it's alright, it's okay
And you may look the other way
    We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man
    Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother
    You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive
    Oh, when you walk
Well now, I get low and I get high
And if I can't get either, I really try
Got the wings of Heaven on my shoes
    I'm a dancin' man and I just can't lose
You know it's alright, it's okay
I'll live to see another day
    We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man

Thank you for your wonderful reaction. The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988. The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1966. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin'. From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). You should react to the 1979 live version of Stayin' Alive, too ruclips.net/video/7niXSh7vWRI/видео.html Other great songs to analyze: great album tracks from the 1979 Spirits Having Flown album, the title song: ruclips.net/video/WH_j90fCIk4/видео.html, the outrageously beautiful song Reaching Out ruclips.net/video/vfHUS5Mf00Q/видео.html. From their Still Waters album, Smoke and MIrrors: ruclips.net/video/MT9vRHSWNbk/видео.html. From the 1960's I've gotta get a message to you ruclips.net/video/CA4CInDnTk8/видео.html.

If you haven't reacted to it already, their song ''Massachusetts'' from 1967 is one of my favorites. There are a couple of live performances of this that are better than the original release. Enjoying your channel very much.......

Just an FYI. Thier voices are not actually that high. They use a technique called falsetto.

Why do you love this? Here's why.
True musicians, true singers, vocal harmonies, melodiy.
All the opposite of that crappy bullshitting hip-hop, rap using only boring music made by fake instruments all sounding the same.
