Howdy Chris- I believe if there’s anybody who would know how to set up a squirrel proof bird feeder it would be you. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the videos of the squirrels and their shenanigans. Thanks for sharing this. Take care my friend. God bless y’all
The squirrels in my area are not “Super Squirrels” but they are certainly mind readers and know when I’m on the hunt. Good advice Chris, derived for from hours and hours of videoed research.Thanks.
Found this video very interesting as I was trying to set up a bird feeder hanging from a tree. Soon I found they can easily jump 6ft span and was wondering what is the limit. Your video not only showed various entertaining aspects of how squirrels get on the feeders but also clearly showed what really works without all the "Rube Goldberg" contraptions out there on the web. Thanks for sharing your wonderful experiments with backyard nature's cretures
I am so pleased by your entire video. Your pleasant speaking voice, well researched information and validation by adequate, ample personal experience and great explanatory video settles this matter of discouraging obnoxious raiding squirrels forever in my opinion. The only reason to watch anyone else's video on same is because they are fun to watch. Some of it pretty convoluted. Innocent fun. But, you nailed it ! Awesome sir! P.S. Other solutions may be necessary due to back yards that just don't have the room for 9' of clearance around the feeder and perhaps too many leaping structures within range of the feeder.
Thank you.. We have gone through a few bird feeders do to the squirrels knocking them on the ground and breaking them.. To the point where even the birds stop coming.. So I'll try this and see if it will work..
I've got the same baffle on a shepherds hook mounted exactly 3 ft from the ground. My wife took a photo of a squirrel on the feeder this morning. No idea how it got on. So far, the only one I've seen that has made it. Mounted the baffle 2 days ago. Will see if any others figure it out.
Thanks, I've watched most the squirrel vids. And I'll consider you very knowledgeable on the subject. I'll be setting up my feeders the way you showed and see if I have any super squirrels here in Iowa lol. Thanks for sharing and take care.
This is the squirrelliest channel ever! But I LIKE IT! I’m a huge believer in the cast iron skillet baffle with bacon grease..... I’ve never seen one get around it!
I am in Colorado and these squirrels are gray squirrels…they look just like the squirrels you have in Louisiana. I had a pole feeder with baffle. I was told to keep feeders 10 ft from jumping point. The best I could do was 9 1/2 feet. That worked for 9 1/2 years. but now they can make the jump from 6t board fence to feeder. I am planning on putting chicken wire piece on top of fence jump off point. Moving the feeder would move it out of view from house, so I couldn’t watch the birds.
That’s awesome brother! I gave up trying to keep the squirrels away. Then I decided to save the seeds from my finches. I would throw out the uneaten seeds when I fed them in the morning. I decided to save them instead of throwing them out because they only eat certain seeds. Then I filled my feeder with those leftovers! Guess what? The squirrels don’t like them and leave them alone! The birds love them! Oh yeah!
Some great advice from an Xpert at Squirrely Behavior....Now I don't know about your Bushy Tails but if I don't have food out and they start getting hongrey the whole gang comes knocking on my door and I have to remind them that I like Squirrel Stew....LOL!!
hahaha we like some squirrel gumbo for sure...this time of year those darn things get wormy in Louisiana though...I'll have to pass on em til the fall :-)
Thanks for the video! I'm wrestling with this right now with our squirrel Stumpy. He's a good squirrel, but a bit of a trickster! Any tips on how to make baffles? Gonna subscribe to support your channel! Happy birding!
I normally wait for after the squirrels to eat their seeds... And then I go re- fill up the bird feeders again after they eat. So needless to say I spend a lot of money on bird food lol but they're all so cute I can't deny them food 😭🙈
Good one... It seems all our local tree rats also have supernatural powers. (determination) The nice commercial, rounded baffles work pretty good. I make a Coolie hat out of Alu and discovered that a PVC pipe cap at the top means the little bugger cannot hold onto the hang wire and reach the end of the disk,. Prior, mine would hold the wire with one back foot, lean the cap and grab onto the mesh feeder. Press on - there's a war to be won! Jim
Someone said to use 50# Braided Fishing Line because it's too small for them to grip. I have one hanging with it and they haven't gotten on it in two weeks!
Yup...it works for awhile...I've tried braid, mono and catfish line of various sizes...I 'think' eventually they use that stuff to sharpen their teeth or something b/c they'll chew it and snap it eventually...may take awhile. Good luck!
Deborah Mastranduono Go big or go home! I would use the biggest baffle I could find, BUT. That would be such an eyesore, wouldn't it? But I'll try anything once. I did hear they won't eat certain seeds. So if you pack your feeders with these undesirable seed, eventually they won't bother with that feeder anymore. This is all theory, mind you. They've totally ruined my lawn. They've eaten through my 2 x 6 pressure treated wooden deck. They've eaten through the floor of my shed in several places. How they got in there is beyond me. The shed is hermetically sealed with expanding foam to keep them out!! If you come up with an idea that works, PLEASE let me know. I'm old and don't want to play their games anymore. Hugs from Canada!!
Have you ever tried using a single baffle by turning the baffle the other end up? I realize that the squirrel will be able to jump into it, but can they reach the plate below with the baffle extending outwards? Just an idea.....maybe something to test out?
Howdy sir....great idea! I did actually try this and while it was 100% effective...the darn upside down baffle kept getting leaves and sticks and bird poop and everything else you can think of in it....I wasn't in the mood to get a ladder, go out and clean it every couple of days so I canned that idea. Have a good one!
Whoa whoa! There are that many different kinds of squirrels?? You've taught me something. I guess I'm different. I don't care that the squirrels eat the bird food 😂. But I know some peeps do hate it. Super squirrel aaaaaahahahaha. This was great info.
@@ale_the_ia9033 thanks for asking. I ended up getting a squirrel buster feeder and a really long hook from wild birds unlimited. It is squirrel proof so far.

The only issue I'd have iny area with this setup is hawks. The birds won't go to such an open feeder. But my squirrels aren't as daring as city squirrels, probably be a use they don't wanna make themselves vulnerable to the hawks

Hi great tip thanks! You may enjoy this one :-) ruclips.net/video/JrBcckWypeA/видео.html
Forgot to mention,
I use enough bottles to cover 6 feet of line,at each end, next to the tree or pole
What is to stop the squirl from jumping past the baffle??
Nothing...they just don't do it for some reason...

Do any squirrels jump up from the bottom of the feeder? My squirrels get to the feeder and tip it to empty the seed.
They do, that's why the suggestion is to set up the feeder at least 48 inches from the bottom @7:27
Then it snows and he’s got another foot to jump up
Instead of a double baffle, just flip the one around the other way
