@@skullchimes I'm 21 and have a wacom cintiq, have done countless commissions, and I still occasionally am gifted a pack of these watercolors from relatives. Always appreciate the gesture but it IS comical each time getting children's kits. Very much like a well meaning grandma buying her grandkids a knockoff movie hahaha. I swear these watercolors will follow every artist regardless of skill to our graves. If any of the great historical painters were alive today I feel like there's a solid chance their family and friends would in fact still hand them these watercolor sets every holiday.
I never had this set (grew up poor) but I bought one for my niece and realized how awful they actually are. The watercolors are like chalk, the crayons and oil pastels are hard, everything has barely any pigment and almost pure filler.... it's enough to put kids off art if they have to struggle with their mediums.
Jose is an angel. The fact he compared your art to Picasso rather than laughing at it like Kevin thought he would, was the most wholesome thing I needed to see today :)
I'm being 100% serious here: this was a really beautiful video about art and what motivates people to be creative. I'm glad you had fun and made something you're (rightfully) proud of. It's honestly all about expressing yourself by making stuff you want to make. The outcome is obviously a part of it, but the way there is just as important.
@@Limelaz23 yea, but somethimes you are makeing a dialog, that's going on so well in your head, and then you have to write it, and you either forget what you wanted to write, forget specific word or it turns out cringey on paper for some unbeknownst to me reason. At least I have this problem. If I made any typos or grammar mistakes, let me know cause that's not my first language and I'm too tired to double check right now.

As an artist (mostly amateur digital painter with a tiny bit of graphite drawing experience) I always say that experience and technical skill are just an extra layer on someone's work and anyone can make art who is interested and willing. Knowing how to make certain things well is secondary. If someone wants to be a portrait artist they will eventually look deeper into the subject and learn along the way. I hate the stigma that sais people need to meet some sort of imaginary standard to make any art that is meaningful. Commercial art is obviously a different thing, but that is just a fragment of the whole topic.

@@demo2823 I've seen that on youtube before and it's incredible! :D I also really like the smaller subreddit called r/badart which is kinda similar, but it's mostly amateur and even less skilled people uploading their works, but many of those labeled as "bad" feel more inspiring, and deep, and made with care than 90% of high skill art that was just made to impress random people. There's a frequent user there who often makes digital paintings about PTSD and like.. extreme mental distress? And those (for me at least) are some of the most striking artworks I've seen in a while.
Okay but like, the fact he used multiple materials and different styles ultimately creating chaos just works with his theme of "Plagued by Thought". Not only does it have multiple meanings depending on how you view it, he did it with so much determination and passion as well. Who knew Kevin is an Artist! (Pretty sure we all did. also, as an artist myself, the way jose explained art despite struggling to find the words is probably the best definition i've ever heard. art is not just something pretty or appealing, it's the meaning that the artist put behind it that matters.

Then no-one can make art, because there will always be someone who won't find it good. If an art piece follows all the rules of what makes a good art piece it still can feel boring and unimpressive, while the most chaotic and unruly work can speak to many people. There is no objectively good art and there never will be. And that's perfect, because then there wouldn't be art at all! everything would look the same.
Issue with neo both creative and a protectionist is that I will just spend hours trying to prefect a. Tiny detail and ignore everything else only to realize that detail is basically unnoticed to everyone else.

What makes Kevin a more artist than I am is, despite realizing that his talent is not superior, he shows his art piece to someone and being okay with that. For me that takes a lot of courage to face judgement and critics. Also, Jose is such a nice guy. I wish I can meet people like him more
As someone who took college art classes, everyone who isn't familiar with critiquing art will just look at it at face value and struggle to say anything, let alone anything good. Had to do a self portrait with only lines and no shading, thus my pupils were white. The teacher said I looked like a deer in headlights and tried to act like that was a good thing. Bitch, what?
I feel you. I'm not a visual artist, but a musician. The fear of letting someone listen to something I've put a dozen or more hours into is a genuinely terrifying prospect. So for a decade it just sat unheard. But practice makes the perfect, the more you do it, the easier it gets and you learn how to deal with the negative emotions that arise. Successful people are successful because they failed and kept trying.
As an artist myself this for some reason really makes me feel like a proud mom. Watching people get hyped about art when they have very little or no experience is always so wholesome to me. It feels like remembering why I love art.
That's why I love bob Ross. He thought anyone can be an artist and it doesn't matter your level of skill as long as you love what youre doing. It's why I always encourage young artists and the like so they don't feel like they need to drop drawing or painting or whatever just because they aren't a master yet.
I am a casual artist and I too find joy in finding love in artwork. My hands are kinda messed up so its hard to draw as much as I used to, but I still try to get some art in every so often
This video makes me so happy on so many levels. Jose's philosophy on art and the points he was trying to express to Kevin are so important. I went to college for art, and nothing can suck the love for art out of you like that can. But his perspective on the childlike quality to art, about Picasso turning away from technical realism in his later life to instead pursue the type of art that was just *fun* to him - all of that is so true. You can go to school for four years like I did, gain all the technical skill in the world, but if you don't have that passion and interest for what you're doing that Kevin showed throughout this video, you will never really *grow*. And Kevin, when you were following that Bob Ross tutorial, you said something like, "I messed up, so I had to go over it and try something new, so I'm no longer following the tutorial, because I'm not as brave as Mr. Ross." But I would argue the opposite. It's super, super hard and scary for artists to admit that they messed up and to scrap art, or to go outside of their usual guidelines when things don't work out in order to still make something that works. That takes a *lot* of bravery! I still really struggle to do it!! Idk, I think that after having trained so hard in art for so long, seeing people who are new to it try it with a genuine interest in the craft, even if they're self-conscious, makes me really happy. I love seeing non-artists try art. I love seeing new artists pick up art. You art doesn't have to be "good," it doesn't have to be "right." Was Kevin's piece super technically complex? No. But it was *cool*. It was interesting, it had meaning, it came from Kevin's heart, it was his attempt at trying to express something important to him. And that is what makes his little red man so fun to look at! I was really impressed with it in the end. And the fact that Kevin is happy with it is what makes it so special. I really hope that you continue to make art if that's what you feel like doing, Kev! Be it through digital city scaping, paining, oil pastels (pretty sure that's what your glorbing was, lmao), charcoal (my personal favorite!!), etc. And the same goes for anyone reading this. I think you could make some really cool stuff. :)
As someone who minored in art in college, I agree so much that it can suck the joy out, with much depending on who are your professors. There were so many gatekeepers at my university, it felt like they were trying to weed out people who were less technically proficient and actively trying to discourage people who they perceived as not real artists. There were multiple occasions where my art was specifically ridiculed by the teachers (they didn't know I was the artist because it was work from a different class) and it was so demotivating that after I graduated, I didn't make much art for a long time. I wish I'd had more teachers like José.
As someone who used to draw so much as a child and just lost all of it growing up, I feel really happy seeing new and non-artists try it out. Been meaning to come back to it and have been trying for quite some time now. Art is just amazing and it's really fun.
As someone else who went to art school, some of my best teachers were the ones who encouraged us to just play and experiment with our art. That’s how you make the kind of discoveries that lead you down paths you never expected, and how you end up drawing and developing your own style. Kevin’s pieces were honestly pretty good. We get so caught up in trying to make things that look like an expert made them that we forget that art is expression. And his art was pure expression, and experimentation, and joy in just creating something; that’s something so many people lose over the years and have to try to find again. As for the notion that only some people are artists, I’ll argue until I’m blue in the face that creation is the most fundamentally human thing ever. We’re the only animal that makes things just to express ourselves, or just to look at, or just for fun. Art is an intrinsically human thing, and everybody should absolutely find some kind of creative outlet because it genuinely improves your life. Even just whistling some little tune you made up, or drawing things in the dirt, or making something in Minecraft, is being creative!
Kevin, as an artist: I absolutely adore your painting. The colors are perfect (orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel, which means they stand out and clash with eachother! You unknowingly picked the perfect combo for a piece like this), the silhouette of the little dude is perfectly simple, and for someone who’s inexperienced, your blending skills are really impressive! I love seeing you branch out and do things like this Kevin. Congratulations- you’re officially an artist!! :)
Seeing Kevin just directly lining the pencil drawings without sketching anything is the bravest thing I have seen in a while. The confidence, I could never.
Honestly was thinking the same thing. Like... he just went for it. If I'm going straight to lines it'll be sketchy and have multiple 'strokes' per line. But his were solid, like damn haha
Haha, I used to do this, I am not sure if it's to do with confidence. I think sketching then actually lining is an art technique people that are new at drawing and don't do it much just don't usually do since it doesn't occur to them? It at least never occurred to me until I actually went to study techniques and such.

I would argue that you're actually a very artistic and creative person with the content that you make. Art doesn't just have to be painting and drawing, it has many forms. Your videos are amazing and hilarious and I would definitely consider them art and you an artist. I think your drawing at the end here further shows how much of an artist you've always been. I was really sad at first when Kevin was being so cynical about his painting. It was fantastic to see him grow to express his satisfaction with his own creations over the course of the video! Keep at it, Kevin!
Kevin explaining what he was trying to express at 19:00 hit me really hard. The final piece made me tear up a bit. I think Kevin accomplished exactly what he set out to do.
As someone who is an artist and was diagnosed with ADHD late in life, that bit really hit my emotions. Just knowing what he's gone through up to this point, and seeing the genuine surprised joy on his face when he realized he'd accomplished what he was trying to do really resonated with me. I'm so glad that Kevin plays these learning experiences straight/genuine instead of treating it like a joke. They're legitimately touching and inspiring because of it.
I would like to see him show up on his parents' doorstep to show them his latest creations and see their reactions, but I'm sure that would never happen...
i got a degree in fine arts and college art absolutely killed my creativity and my passion and seeing someone like kevin just get this lil burst of passion and jump right in makes me want to cry. when he was proud of his art at the end i could sob
also the water color painting was actually so good considering the materials he was using. i hope he keeps up with his creativity he seems to have the passion that makes all artists great
I HAD THIS HAPPEN TOO! I did gcse art and that wasn’t as bad, going into A Level art though killed my creativity the strict deadlines made drawing become a chore, I ended up dropping out due to my mental health and I’ve never felt so inspired to draw and put my energy into art without feeling the pressure of failure.

I went to music school and it was a good experience overall and I'm glad I did it, but the deadlines and the occasional strict teacher took the joy out of writing, playing, and producing music, which is something I loved doing in my spare time. I'm slowly getting back into it as a passion but it was tough for a bit there.
I definitely got the art burnout after going to school for both computer art and animation. I'm grateful I learned so much, but squeezing so much knowledge into such a short amount of time really sucked a lot of the joy out of it.
Feel like this is a great example of how a lot of beginner artists hold themselves back by telling themselves they're beginners. You can learn so much in even your first drawings just by fully throwin urself into them and not telling yourself you're not good enough yet to focus on a certain technique or getting that shape right, etc. I've taught total beginners basic portrait sketching before and they're always super surprised with how good their work is for being a first time thing, just because instead of giving up or underestimating themselves they picked up on the advice I gave and really let themselves try to view and draw through an artistic lense. If you're just starting off, don't hinder yourself with negative thinking or a fear of jumping in too deep. Seriously just go for it, and if you see something that you think can be improved on, don't wait until you're "better", go ahead and do it. You'll find you can actually make a lot of really great stuff that you never expected yourself to produce, and you'll have more fun than you would underestimating your initial abilities.
I became so emotional while watching Kevin learn and understand how to create art and what art means. When he was saying that he's not good at art or that something isn't perfect, it really reminded me of when I was younger and would be overly critical of the things I created. I want Kevin to know that art is never perfect. There is no master painter, or illustrator or other medium. It's okay to make mistakes and to be critical of yourself, but don't beat yourself up when the thing you're creating isn't turning out how you wanted. It's a learning experience and it's okay to not know what you're doing. And genuinely, when he drew the orange silhouette and said he thinks he likes it, I felt so much pride and happiness for him. Kevin did a great job and I'm really proud of him for leaving his comfort zone and trying something new and creative.
Why did this video make me wanna cryyyy. I spent my entire life creating art and never feeling like it was art. This video itself felt more like the kind of art I want to produce than what I’ve done before.

@@KillMePete What you do is you hide it in your partner's drawer until you forget about it then you stumble upon it in the future, assume your partner made it, and then gush about it to them because you are seeing it through the eyes of love not self-judgement and over-awareness.
I'm a professionally trained artist (sculpture mostly) and getting to go along with Kevin on this journey helped me fall in love with my craft all over again. The little break through moments really made me so genuinely happy for him and I hope he keeps dabbling in different ways of making art. Everyone has so much to say through art really, we should never limit art to only those with high level technical ability, materials or knowledge
I love how Kevin went in to everything wildly unprepared, sometimes with terrible equipment, and absolute know knowledge of techniques or how to use things and yet he still made some really impressive stuff! As a artist who has done the exact same thing starting out im so proud of him. This is how all artists are born.
I'm an artist who struggles with internal monologue that's quite negative, so seeing this just completely shifted my perspective. This was so fun to see Kevin! And the main purpose of art is to express yourself and enjoy it, maybe even tune in with your inner child :)
Being an artist is showcasing your internal thoughts. Its polarizing. To put your thoughts into existence is always a vulnerable place to be in. You physically see it, its no longer a thought, its real, and tangible. Scary.
Honestly I was thinking the same thing as I watched this I've had some serious art block and haven't felt confident in the last few things I've done. Esp because I've started to see a trend in my style and don't really like it. But this has been really inspiring seeing this has really made me realize that it doesn't matter how it looks it's about doing it and expressing myself. And most importantly having fun

this is one of the reasons i really love kevin. as someone who also has adhd i find his struggles and his trains of thought in his videos to be rly relatable and it reminds me that its not just me who does these things
YES! 100% agree, before he even mentioned that’s what he was going for, i was kinda getting the vibe from the drawing. just the way the body and head looked empty but full at the same time. I’ve been watching Kevin’s vidoes now for years, like 7 years or something… idk it’s one of the few things i’ve actually managed to stay pretty committed to watching and not losing interest in. Kevin truly has an artistic mind, he’s a very creative person with so many ideas and a willingness to try so many new things regardless of his skill levels… in fact sometimes it seems the lower they are the more likely he’ll give it a try 🤣 I think Kevin is a great guy and i absolutely wish him the best everyday. I feel like i can understand and relate in many ways myself.
I love seeing Kevin try out new things just for the fun of it. I feel like a lot of our generation has forgotten about the idea of hobbies and trying out new stuff. He looks so satisfied doing something new and it's honestly inspiring.

I am honestly super impressed with the final outcome. It’s so rare for people this early in their art career to “get it.” Art isn’t about being the “best” or most technically impressive, it’s all about self expression. Whether it’s expressed in oil paints on a 20ft x 20ft canvas or with crayons on printer paper doesn’t matter as long as it is something true to you. I’ve seen many technically impressive paintings that fall flat because of the lack of heart. In truth, some of the most moving pieces i’ve seen were quite simple in concept. The finished piece in this video is dripping with personality and intent, i love it. Also don’t think lowly of your technical skills. I was surprised when you chose blue to be the “overwhelming” color because that was exactly what I was thinking. Blue and orange are on the opposite side of the color wheel, making them complementary colors. The blue and orange contrast each other and create a feeling of unease and chaos whilst also looking good together. Also, the choice to make the pencil strokes go the same way makes the whole piece feel unified and cohesive. :)
That's what I learnt with photography. Some of my favourite photos that I have taken are terrible from a technical standpoint. Out of focus, underexposed, overexposed etc. But they have a certain feel.
I think that's why AI "art" will never be true art. Sure it's technically impressive (if you ignore the fact that it's all stolen artwork and made by a computer) but it lacks that heart and emotion that comes from human made art. The AI is just spitting out what its fed but real art has life experience and actual thought behind it. Kevins piece at the end of the video told a story and that's something I dont think AI "art" could ever do.

And what you made is up there with the really good abstract arts. And when Jose said there is passion inside of you, tears started rolling down my cheeks. Kevin, as someone who pretty much their whole life has done dark mental health drawings, your red and blue one is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I saw the face and immediately the first thing I thought was “oooh it kinda looks like the face is blurred out, kinda like a dark painting about not knowing who you really are or having dark thoughts… nah… he won’t go that route.” And then I saw the outline and I GASPED. It just kept getting better and better. Honestly the message in that one is very very clear and the oil pastels sorta give it a very avant-garde moving picture feel that I absolutely LOVE! I felt like I could envision the painting along with you. I would love to hang that up on my wall. Oh, and that first painting you made was super good too! Honestly, the color scheme was super pretty. ❤

It’s pretty inspiring seeing Kevin put himself out there like this, and getting almost thus nervous joy out of the experience. I have a bachelor's degree in art teaching and been working as one for 1 and a half year and I would honestly say that the last picture proves to me that you are more artistic than you think. The fact that you are able to look at the picture and determine what should be done next to make it look better is actually quite impressive. You are able to do that more than a lot of people I know, even more than a few that enjoy making art regularly. It also has variations in textures and contrasts. You should really be proud of that! I am proud at least 😂❤️
I'm an actual artist, both paid and as a hobby, but I've been experiencing such a horrible block that I haven't been able to start for ages, and seeing Kevin's little sketch man, and Jose's advice, legit made me want to just overcome the voices in my head and just START again already and make art for my soul's sake. Kevin learned that day that he enjoys making abstract art. Using a mixed variety of art supplies. As someone who's been drawing for 10 years, jumping into drawing without having an idea it's the most fun way to create art. You just trusting the process and see what you can create is so rewarding.
This was actually wonderful to watch as an artist, Kevin! It was all my stages of grief and excitement and anguish when I draw all compacted into 25 minutes and 40 seconds. I genuinely feel like the composition, color scheme, and wild line strokes work really well to convey the feeling of being plagued by thought, as the title you called it suggests. I also appreciate that you kept the strokes of the pastels, crayons, and pencils in the same direction, as it makes it feel like it was intentional rather than it just happened or was a mistake. I think you could totally learn to be an artist if you keep up the effort. I see great potential in your work!
I love when people paint with Bob Ross during his tutorials and eventually end up making something similar but entirely different just because of how things worked out, and end up really happy with their results. Like I'm positive stuff like this is exactly what Bob Ross would have wanted and would love to see
My sister and I did the same Bob Ross video and somehow she ended up with an airy autumn forest with a rocky creek and I ended up with a lake half obscured by ferns in a thick tropical rainforest. We hung them beside each other but they don't really work as a set.
My great-grandfather was terrible in many ways, but one of the ones we can talk about at the dinner table is that he used to say his daughters were rubbish at art and make fun of them when they tried. My granny stopped painting because she was sure she was terrible at it, but when she was full-grown she found a Bob Ross video in a charity shop. Her paintings are beautiful and she's been doing them for decades thanks to Mr Ross. He was a special kind of teacher
You know I binge art videos daily, especially when working on my own art, and this was probably one of the most inspiring and pleasant to watch that I've seen all week! I love that you made a genuine effort and tried a bunch of different things to see what you liked or didn't like, and the fact that you went mixed media at the end just because you felt like it! I loved your last piece, and as of late relate to that overthinking and intrusive thoughts. You genuinely made something that had a connection to both you and I'm sure others who saw this video and that's fuckin awesome! Also, if you continue to use oil pastels they sell fixatives to spray on your final piece to keep them from smudging once you're done. You can also use hair spray I believe? Though I think that changes the way the colors look after drying sometimes I don't know I just let my shit smudge like a hooligan, but thought I'd share in case you do more! :)
I don’t often call things genuinely wholesome, but that’s what this whole video is. As a long-time artist myself, it brings me a special kind of joy to see other people get excited over art with such childlike enthusiasm and pure feeling. Thanks for sharing your art with us Kevin. You clearly have ideas for future art pieces, you're interested in trying out different materials & techniques and making your drawings more and more detailed, and there's so much more to enjoy in the process If it feels overwhelming, you may try to 1. look for "beginner tutorial" about different kinds of strokes / blobs you can make with it, how you can smudge / erase it to create different effects 2. continue to do both drawings from imagination and life drawings, like you did with your mug, that way you'll be building a reference library in your head to better communicate your ideas This is such a heartwarming video. I'm an artist myself and i'm so happy seeing somebody discovering it for themselves

As an artist, this was such a wholesome and lovely video to watch! It's also nice to have the reminder to not be scared of trying new methods of creating art, and to focus less on making something that will appeal to people, and more on just expressing something or showing my passion. I'm a professional fine artist, and I loved this! Your jokes about art are so relatable. I hope you make more art videos. I think a good one could be following a bob ross tutorial with the oil pastels (cause they are more like the paint bob uses), and then making another expressive drawing. The way you expressed intrusive thoughts was really awesome. My one beef with the video is what you classify as "Art". Funny videos on the internet are "Art". You have been making art for years now. @@skullchimes I'm 21 and have a wacom cintiq, have done countless commissions, and I still occasionally am gifted a pack of these watercolors from relatives. Always appreciate the gesture but it IS comical each time getting children's kits. Very much like a well meaning grandma buying her grandkids a knockoff movie hahaha. I swear these watercolors will follow every artist regardless of skill to our graves. If any of the great historical painters were alive today I feel like there's a solid chance their family and friends would in fact still hand them these watercolor sets every holiday.
I never had this set (grew up poor) but I bought one for my niece and realized how awful they actually are. The watercolors are like chalk, the crayons and oil pastels are hard, everything has barely any pigment and almost pure filler.... it's enough to put kids off art if they have to struggle with their mediums.

As an artist (mostly amateur digital painter with a tiny bit of graphite drawing experience) I always say that experience and technical skill are just an extra layer on someone's work and anyone can make art who is interested and willing.
Knowing how to make certain things well is secondary. If someone wants to be a portrait artist they will eventually look deeper into the subject and learn along the way.
I hate the stigma that sais people need to meet some sort of imaginary standard to make any art that is meaningful. Commercial art is obviously a different thing, but that is just a fragment of the whole topic.

@@demo2823 I've seen that on youtube before and it's incredible! :D I also really like the smaller subreddit called r/badart which is kinda similar, but it's mostly amateur and even less skilled people uploading their works, but many of those labeled as "bad" feel more inspiring, and deep, and made with care than 90% of high skill art that was just made to impress random people.
There's a frequent user there who often makes digital paintings about PTSD and like.. extreme mental distress? And those (for me at least) are some of the most striking artworks I've seen in a while.

As someone who took college art classes, everyone who isn't familiar with critiquing art will just look at it at face value and struggle to say anything, let alone anything good.
Had to do a self portrait with only lines and no shading, thus my pupils were white. The teacher said I looked like a deer in headlights and tried to act like that was a good thing. Bitch, what?
I feel you. I'm not a visual artist, but a musician. The fear of letting someone listen to something I've put a dozen or more hours into is a genuinely terrifying prospect. So for a decade it just sat unheard. But practice makes the perfect, the more you do it, the easier it gets and you learn how to deal with the negative emotions that arise. Successful people are successful because they failed and kept trying.
As an artist myself this for some reason really makes me feel like a proud mom. Watching people get hyped about art when they have very little or no experience is always so wholesome to me. It feels like remembering why I love art.
That's why I love bob Ross. He thought anyone can be an artist and it doesn't matter your level of skill as long as you love what youre doing. It's why I always encourage young artists and the like so they don't feel like they need to drop drawing or painting or whatever just because they aren't a master yet.

Jose's philosophy on art and the points he was trying to express to Kevin are so important. I went to college for art, and nothing can suck the love for art out of you like that can. But his perspective on the childlike quality to art, about Picasso turning away from technical realism in his later life to instead pursue the type of art that was just *fun* to him - all of that is so true. You can go to school for four years like I did, gain all the technical skill in the world, but if you don't have that passion and interest for what you're doing that Kevin showed throughout this video, you will never really *grow*.
And Kevin, when you were following that Bob Ross tutorial, you said something like, "I messed up, so I had to go over it and try something new, so I'm no longer following the tutorial, because I'm not as brave as Mr. Ross." But I would argue the opposite. It's super, super hard and scary for artists to admit that they messed up and to scrap art, or to go outside of their usual guidelines when things don't work out in order to still make something that works. That takes a *lot* of bravery! I still really struggle to do it!!
Idk, I think that after having trained so hard in art for so long, seeing people who are new to it try it with a genuine interest in the craft, even if they're self-conscious, makes me really happy. I love seeing non-artists try art. I love seeing new artists pick up art. You art doesn't have to be "good," it doesn't have to be "right." Was Kevin's piece super technically complex? No. But it was *cool*. It was interesting, it had meaning, it came from Kevin's heart, it was his attempt at trying to express something important to him. And that is what makes his little red man so fun to look at! I was really impressed with it in the end. And the fact that Kevin is happy with it is what makes it so special.
I really hope that you continue to make art if that's what you feel like doing, Kev! Be it through digital city scaping, paining, oil pastels (pretty sure that's what your glorbing was, lmao), charcoal (my personal favorite!!), etc. And the same goes for anyone reading this. I think you could make some really cool stuff. :)
As someone who minored in art in college, I agree so much that it can suck the joy out, with much depending on who are your professors. There were so many gatekeepers at my university, it felt like they were trying to weed out people who were less technically proficient and actively trying to discourage people who they perceived as not real artists. There were multiple occasions where my art was specifically ridiculed by the teachers (they didn't know I was the artist because it was work from a different class) and it was so demotivating that after I graduated, I didn't make much art for a long time. I wish I'd had more teachers like José.

As someone else who went to art school, some of my best teachers were the ones who encouraged us to just play and experiment with our art. That’s how you make the kind of discoveries that lead you down paths you never expected, and how you end up drawing and developing your own style.
Kevin’s pieces were honestly pretty good. We get so caught up in trying to make things that look like an expert made them that we forget that art is expression. And his art was pure expression, and experimentation, and joy in just creating something; that’s something so many people lose over the years and have to try to find again.
As for the notion that only some people are artists, I’ll argue until I’m blue in the face that creation is the most fundamentally human thing ever. We’re the only animal that makes things just to express ourselves, or just to look at, or just for fun. Art is an intrinsically human thing, and everybody should absolutely find some kind of creative outlet because it genuinely improves your life. Even just whistling some little tune you made up, or drawing things in the dirt, or making something in Minecraft, is being creative!

I absolutely adore your painting. The colors are perfect (orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel, which means they stand out and clash with eachother! You unknowingly picked the perfect combo for a piece like this), the silhouette of the little dude is perfectly simple, and for someone who’s inexperienced, your blending skills are really impressive! I love seeing you branch out and do things like this Kevin. Congratulations- you’re officially an artist!! :)

I think sketching then actually lining is an art technique people that are new at drawing and don't do it much just don't usually do since it doesn't occur to them? It at least never occurred to me until I actually went to study techniques and such.

I was really sad at first when Kevin was being so cynical about his painting. It was fantastic to see him grow to express his satisfaction with his own creations over the course of the video! Keep at it, Kevin!
Kevin explaining what he was trying to express at 19:00 hit me really hard. The final piece made me tear up a bit. I think Kevin accomplished exactly what he set out to do.
As someone who is an artist and was diagnosed with ADHD late in life, that bit really hit my emotions. Just knowing what he's gone through up to this point, and seeing the genuine surprised joy on his face when he realized he'd accomplished what he was trying to do really resonated with me. I'm so glad that Kevin plays these learning experiences straight/genuine instead of treating it like a joke. They're legitimately touching and inspiring because of it.

I HAD THIS HAPPEN TOO! I did gcse art and that wasn’t as bad, going into A Level art though killed my creativity the strict deadlines made drawing become a chore, I ended up dropping out due to my mental health and I’ve never felt so inspired to draw and put my energy into art without feeling the pressure of failure.

I went to music school and it was a good experience overall and I'm glad I did it, but the deadlines and the occasional strict teacher took the joy out of writing, playing, and producing music, which is something I loved doing in my spare time. I'm slowly getting back into it as a passion but it was tough for a bit there.
I definitely got the art burnout after going to school for both computer art and animation. I'm grateful I learned so much, but squeezing so much knowledge into such a short amount of time really sucked a lot of the joy out of it.
Feel like this is a great example of how a lot of beginner artists hold themselves back by telling themselves they're beginners. You can learn so much in even your first drawings just by fully throwin urself into them and not telling yourself you're not good enough yet to focus on a certain technique or getting that shape right, etc. I've taught total beginners basic portrait sketching before and they're always super surprised with how good their work is for being a first time thing, just because instead of giving up or underestimating themselves they picked up on the advice I gave and really let themselves try to view and draw through an artistic lense.
If you're just starting off, don't hinder yourself with negative thinking or a fear of jumping in too deep. Seriously just go for it, and if you see something that you think can be improved on, don't wait until you're "better", go ahead and do it. You'll find you can actually make a lot of really great stuff that you never expected yourself to produce, and you'll have more fun than you would underestimating your initial abilities.

I became so emotional while watching Kevin learn and understand how to create art and what art means. When he was saying that he's not good at art or that something isn't perfect, it really reminded me of when I was younger and would be overly critical of the things I created. I want Kevin to know that art is never perfect. There is no master painter, or illustrator or other medium. It's okay to make mistakes and to be critical of yourself, but don't beat yourself up when the thing you're creating isn't turning out how you wanted. It's a learning experience and it's okay to not know what you're doing. And genuinely, when he drew the orange silhouette and said he thinks he likes it, I felt so much pride and happiness for him. Kevin did a great job and I'm really proud of him for leaving his comfort zone and trying something new and creative.
Why did this video make me wanna cryyyy. I spent my entire life creating art and never feeling like it was art. This video itself felt more like the kind of art I want to produce than what I’ve done before.

I'm a professionally trained artist (sculpture mostly) and getting to go along with Kevin on this journey helped me fall in love with my craft all over again. The little break through moments really made me so genuinely happy for him and I hope he keeps dabbling in different ways of making art. Everyone has so much to say through art really, we should never limit art to only those with high level technical ability, materials or knowledge
I love how Kevin went in to everything wildly unprepared, sometimes with terrible equipment, and absolute know knowledge of techniques or how to use things and yet he still made some really impressive stuff! As a artist who has done the exact same thing starting out im so proud of him. This is how all artists are born.
I'm an artist who struggles with internal monologue that's quite negative, so seeing this just completely shifted my perspective. This was so fun to see Kevin! And the main purpose of art is to express yourself and enjoy it, maybe even tune in with your inner child :)
Being an artist is showcasing your internal thoughts. Its polarizing. To put your thoughts into existence is always a vulnerable place to be in. You physically see it, its no longer a thought, its real, and tangible. Scary.
Honestly I was thinking the same thing as I watched this I've had some serious art block and haven't felt confident in the last few things I've done. Esp because I've started to see a trend in my style and don't really like it. But this has been really inspiring seeing this has really made me realize that it doesn't matter how it looks it's about doing it and expressing myself. And most importantly having fun

this is one of the reasons i really love kevin. as someone who also has adhd i find his struggles and his trains of thought in his videos to be rly relatable and it reminds me that its not just me who does these things
YES! 100% agree, before he even mentioned that’s what he was going for, i was kinda getting the vibe from the drawing. just the way the body and head looked empty but full at the same time. I’ve been watching Kevin’s vidoes now for years, like 7 years or something… idk it’s one of the few things i’ve actually managed to stay pretty committed to watching and not losing interest in.
Kevin truly has an artistic mind, he’s a very creative person with so many ideas and a willingness to try so many new things regardless of his skill levels… in fact sometimes it seems the lower they are the more likely he’ll give it a try 🤣 I think Kevin is a great guy and i absolutely wish him the best everyday. I feel like i can understand and relate in many ways myself.

I am honestly super impressed with the final outcome. It’s so rare for people this early in their art career to “get it.” Art isn’t about being the “best” or most technically impressive, it’s all about self expression. Whether it’s expressed in oil paints on a 20ft x 20ft canvas or with crayons on printer paper doesn’t matter as long as it is something true to you. I’ve seen many technically impressive paintings that fall flat because of the lack of heart. In truth, some of the most moving pieces i’ve seen were quite simple in concept. The finished piece in this video is dripping with personality and intent, i love it.
Also don’t think lowly of your technical skills. I was surprised when you chose blue to be the “overwhelming” color because that was exactly what I was thinking. Blue and orange are on the opposite side of the color wheel, making them complementary colors. The blue and orange contrast each other and create a feeling of unease and chaos whilst also looking good together. Also, the choice to make the pencil strokes go the same way makes the whole piece feel unified and cohesive. :)
That's what I learnt with photography. Some of my favourite photos that I have taken are terrible from a technical standpoint. Out of focus, underexposed, overexposed etc. But they have a certain feel.

I think that's why AI "art" will never be true art. Sure it's technically impressive (if you ignore the fact that it's all stolen artwork and made by a computer) but it lacks that heart and emotion that comes from human made art. The AI is just spitting out what its fed but real art has life experience and actual thought behind it.
Kevins piece at the end of the video told a story and that's something I dont think AI "art" could ever do.

Kevin, as someone who pretty much their whole life has done dark mental health drawings, your red and blue one is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I saw the face and immediately the first thing I thought was “oooh it kinda looks like the face is blurred out, kinda like a dark painting about not knowing who you really are or having dark thoughts… nah… he won’t go that route.” And then I saw the outline and I GASPED. It just kept getting better and better. Honestly the message in that one is very very clear and the oil pastels sorta give it a very avant-garde moving picture feel that I absolutely LOVE! I felt like I could envision the painting along with you. I would love to hang that up on my wall. Oh, and that first painting you made was super good too! Honestly, the color scheme was super pretty. ❤
And the best part about Bob is that he wouldn't criticize, he'd encourage you to keep trying, and reach for your dreams.

I have a bachelor's degree in art teaching and been working as one for 1 and a half year and I would honestly say that the last picture proves to me that you are more artistic than you think. The fact that you are able to look at the picture and determine what should be done next to make it look better is actually quite impressive. You are able to do that more than a lot of people I know, even more than a few that enjoy making art regularly. It also has variations in textures and contrasts. You should really be proud of that! I am proud at least 😂❤️
I'm an actual artist, both paid and as a hobby, but I've been experiencing such a horrible block that I haven't been able to start for ages, and seeing Kevin's little sketch man, and Jose's advice, legit made me want to just overcome the voices in my head and just START again already and make art for my soul's sake. Soon to be graduating art student here- I absolutely love how your final piece turned out! I genuinely feel like the composition, color scheme, and wild line strokes work really well to convey the feeling of being plagued by thought, as the title you called it suggests. I also appreciate that you kept the strokes of the pastels, crayons, and pencils in the same direction, as it makes it feel like it was intentional rather than it just happened or was a mistake.
I think you could totally learn to be an artist if you keep up the effort. I see great potential in your work!

I love when people paint with Bob Ross during his tutorials and eventually end up making something similar but entirely different just because of how things worked out, and end up really happy with their results. Like I'm positive stuff like this is exactly what Bob Ross would have wanted and would love to see
My sister and I did the same Bob Ross video and somehow she ended up with an airy autumn forest with a rocky creek and I ended up with a lake half obscured by ferns in a thick tropical rainforest. We hung them beside each other but they don't really work as a set.
My great-grandfather was terrible in many ways, but one of the ones we can talk about at the dinner table is that he used to say his daughters were rubbish at art and make fun of them when they tried. My granny stopped painting because she was sure she was terrible at it, but when she was full-grown she found a Bob Ross video in a charity shop. Her paintings are beautiful and she's been doing them for decades thanks to Mr Ross. He was a special kind of teacher
You know I binge art videos daily, especially when working on my own art, and this was probably one of the most inspiring and pleasant to watch that I've seen all week! I love that you made a genuine effort and tried a bunch of different things to see what you liked or didn't like, and the fact that you went mixed media at the end just because you felt like it! I loved your last piece, and as of late relate to that overthinking and intrusive thoughts. You genuinely made something that had a connection to both you and I'm sure others who saw this video and that's fuckin awesome!
Also, if you continue to use oil pastels they sell fixatives to spray on your final piece to keep them from smudging once you're done. You can also use hair spray I believe? Though I think that changes the way the colors look after drying sometimes I don't know I just let my shit smudge like a hooligan, but thought I'd share in case you do more! :)

Please keep going! You clearly have ideas for future art pieces, you're interested in trying out different materials & techniques and making your drawings more and more detailed, and there's so much more to enjoy in the process
If it feels overwhelming, you may try to
1. look for "beginner tutorial" about different kinds of strokes / blobs you can make with it, how you can smudge / erase it to create different effects
2. continue to do both drawings from imagination and life drawings, like you did with your mug, that way you'll be building a reference library in your head to better communicate your ideas

I’m a freelance artist for a living and the piece you made is so good!! ✨✨✨ For a beginner your markings (like the strokes of the colored pencil) were really uniform and cohesively textured and my favorite part is that you didn’t chicken out about using deep contrast and bold colors (most beginners are intimidated by using dark shades) - it doesn’t have to be a good art piece to be worthy of making, but hot damn you really did make some good shit! :)) what a great series

I think a good one could be following a bob ross tutorial with the oil pastels (cause they are more like the paint bob uses), and then making another expressive drawing. The way you expressed intrusive thoughts was really awesome. My one beef with the video is what you classify as "Art". Funny videos on the internet are "Art". You have been making art for years now.
