@@OrgusDin I mean sure but these are just hobbies anyway and you can just dedicate like an hour of your time everyday to improve on something you genuinely like to know about
Same! I've wanted to play guitar and drums my whole life. Drums is out of the question for now, being very limited on space. But I just recently got a guitar! Have never been so excited. Started practicing and immediately got discouraged.. which I guess was expected. Seeing Kevin, or anyone really, go on and push forward is exactly what you need. Sometimes it really helps to see others' motivation to pick you back up and keep at it.
@@OrgusDin That's true. And with challenges like these, Kevin is friends with people that are very experienced at what he's trying to learn and can give him the exact steps he needs to take to steadily improve. Like, I don't have any drummers I can contact, so I'd just be dead in the water with no idea of what to do next.
Completely agree with the accessibility, I was a guitarist who turned into a drummer because of this point. If you learn a single drum beat, you can pretty much play along with any song! Drums are very improvisational, whereas guitar (or anything else with notes) you need to learn the song or at least the key it is in first or you will not be able to play along to something. I hope you keep at it and they give as much joy as they have given me over the years!
As someone with basically the same experience, I totally agree, I just found the ability to start from basically nothing so much less daunting than any other instrument. (Also, you should play ksp again)
As a guitarist turned bassist I can completely agree with learning all aspects of song making will help you improve. I couldn’t understand what my old drummer was talking about when he was saying that he was needing me to be intime as the bassist because I was trying to follow him. Then i learned how to play a couple of songs on drums (also adhd took for ever to learn) and then it kinda just clicked one day.
Honestly, as someone who also has ADHD and struggles with longterm commitment to projects/learning new skills, you're kind of an inspiration. You have no fear of picking up something entirely out of your comfort zone, giving yourself a stressful deadline, and pushing through the phase of being not good and feeling like you look silly (you didn't btw I just am familiar with the feeling). Very proud of you! You kick ass at everything you do!
@barrolboi5105 ADHD looks different in different people. Best way to know is to ask a professional (though depending on the country, state, even individual doctors, you may have people that under diagnose you just because of things like being a woman, being good in school, having a successful career). Even though you can be ADHD and any of those things. Common signs are: really hard to focus on anything not interesting; hyperfocusing on things you love; easily lose track of time a lot; trouble learning in traditional learning/education systems; and many more
So so true! As an ADHD person who was designated gifted as a kid, it puts an unbelievable amount of pressure on you to be perfect immediately upon trying something new. Kevin, you are awesome and the whole community is so proud of you!
Kevin might not be a drumming genius. But he is certainly a life genius. The fact that he is an adult with ADHD, trying something really fecking hard for the very first time, that he's willing to fail, and be frustrated, and look like an idiot while still recording and showing this to all of us, is more than enough reason for me to respect and admire him. You'll be a top drummer one day Kevo! Thanks for inspiring us and making our days lighter with your great charisma. You're amazing dude! ❤
As a former band kid it was extremely endearing to hear Kevin voice these common thoughts young musicians tend to have about learning music. What makes this so good is, in actual fact, everyone who plays the drums, goes through the EXACT same frustrations and challenges when you start to actually learn the drums. Bravo for sticking with it (drum pun) Kevin
Not just drums. Piano, orchestral strings, guitar, every instrument has very similar issues to get past. The only difference between instruments is the specific variation of the same problem, really.
@@Avruthlelbh I've been playing guitar for 12 years and I've found that when I get frustrated or bored its best to wait until something reignites your love for it
The skateboarding video he did a while back haunted me, and now I've gone from someone who doesn't skate at all, to someone with three different longboards. I hope Kevin keeps making videos about trying new things and devoting himself to these new experiences. It's encouraging to watch!
The happiness on his face at the end feeling that rush of learning a song for the first time and seeing all the hard work pay off...damn it takes me back! Good job Kev! Dont stop doing music!
Kevin the military genius, the farming genius, now the one man band! So amazing! Honestly as someone who struggles with my own ADHD and having no motivation to start the endless amount of hobbies and talents I want to try out this legit brought tears to my eyes. Never stop being you, Kevin.
Tip for practicing most physical skills (and probably most non-physical ones as well): Notice how Kevin goes through phases of settling into a rhythm and feeling confident, then faltering and feeling like it's slipping away again. Always try to finish your sessions during the highs rather than the lows. Even though it's tempting to keep going for as long as it feels smooth and natural, you really don't want to wear yourself out until you start to stumble again. Not only will that leave you in a discouraged mood, it focuses your brain on the wrong pattern between practices (especially overnight when your brain transfers things from short-term to long-term memory in your sleep), which can actually further cement the wrong muscle memory over time. End on a high note, and you're more likely to start on one next time!
@@youtubeuniversity3638 It doesn't have to be spectacular or anything! Just try to finish your sessions on a relatively high note for you. If you're thinking, "Hey, I feel like I'm kind of getting it!" or, "Things are going a little better now!" just try not to push on too long or overthink it. That's often a good time to wrap up and come back to it later.
@@littleferrhis This is especially true with more anxious students or more stressful activities like learning to fly! It's the partner of the "get back on the horse" axiom. If you have an unpleasant experience it's often better to try for a better one before walking away for the day, or that anxiety can really settle in over the break. I definitely found that to be true with gymnastics. Of course, a truly traumatic experience can make a high-risk activity too dangerous by lowering situational awareness. Flying is a great example there as well. There's a reason you don't just shove a crew onto their next flight after a serious aviation incident. Gotta practice good CRM and assess your mental state!
I loved that bit about writing your own music language. One of the good parts of ADHD is ignoring how things are done and rebuilding them from the ground up yourself to make it easier to understand lol.
“This is very hard” “You’re doing it though!” That is honestly a super encouraging response, I wanna try saying that the next time I’m trying to teach someone something
Mr Greggles is such a good friend for helping Kevin with this and being so patient and supportive! And an even better friend for letting Kevin use the footage even though his fly was very open the whole time 😂
The constant smiling in this video made me really happy! During the cover you look like you're enjoying yourself and that's what's most important when creating art!!

I got a dual diagnosis of ADHD and autism recently so I get the struggle with trying to hold long term goals and attention span in general I’ve watched you for a long time so it’s good to see you push yourself and try grow on your issues makes me want to do the same. I also love seeing how far you’ve came with music over the past few years I’d love to see you play some more of the drums in future if you keep up on them.
Kevin, I’ve been playing guitar for 10 years and watching your videos for around 5. If someone would have challenged me to learn an instrument and play a song in 30 days back then, I would have gone insane. Even now, after a decade of playing different instruments, I don’t think I could have done what you did. This is a huge achievement, and I really hope you stick with it! It seems like you really enjoy this and would make an excellent drummer.
@@damilinot lol, I started when I was 11 and had nothing better to do than learn. I got pretty good but dropped it for a few years. When I became interested again I already had the basics down so getting really good went pretty quick

Consider drumming to some hiphop(like dre, or Timbaland beats). Classic hiphop sticks to the same pattern through the whole song, and are around your bmp comfort zone. Plus, it sounds better.
As someone who spent like 9 years learning music theory, its complicated. It's definitely a useful skill for anyone with an interest in music (it's kind of like another language), but it isn't hugely practical outside of more classical instruments (violins, trumpets, clarinets, that kinda thing). But honestly, I am always completely inspired by everything you do Kevin, and I know I'm just one of like a thousand comments but I hope you know how much you mean to the people who follow you, and how much we're inspired by you and proud of what you accomplish.
@@starcrysis23 as someone who has been doing music related things for nearly 30 years, I totally disagree with the original post's idea that music theory is only practical for classical instruments. I do agree, that if you think of music as a language, then music theory is its grammar. And like all grammars, it is as useful as you let it be. It can give you a lot of tools, and you have to think about which tools are useful in different situations. Since music theory is often taught from a classical perspective, some of it will be less directly impactful for your own music, but I can just about guarantee that if you learn it with an open mind, you will see how even those seemingly unrelated ideas help you understand and appreciate the genres you do enjoy. It takes patience, but if you take the effort to see how it can fit into your style of music, theory will help a lot - even if it just gives you a vocabulary to talk about things in your music that you didn't know the words for before, that is a significant help in making it easier to think through your own music.
@@bricelory9534 I completely agree! I am by no means even close to being a master in music theory, but I do know it's helped me appreciate music more. I kid you not, music theory and knowledge gained from it has even been able to reach into Black Metal for me. (That sentence was a little weird in terms of wording, so I will clarify, I have been listening to black metal for a very long time, and I am trying to say that knowing music theory is still good, even in such a peculiar musical genre.)
@@starcrysis23 music theory is totally worth it for anything music, I had that mentality for ages until I finally decided to study music theory and eeverything is so easier now for anything musical, I wish I studied that at the start. Even for mixing a mastering, things that I do more nowadays than writing music, is way better if you know how it works "behind the scenes"
Im loving the irl learning new skills videos! Im Kevins age and I think its really admirable how he pushes through the initial "idk what im doing" phase. I also think its really refreshing how honest he is about life/mental health/lack of motivation/frustration getting in the way of developing new skills and how that affects his timelines. And how he finds alternative ways of teaching himself, ways that work for him as an individual. I actually started drawing again after the art/painting video. And its felt really damn good, honestly, and Ive been finding tutorials to get better that work for my learning style. These videos are a lovely reminder that I can still pick up hobbies Ive always had an interest in. Thanks for the inspiration, Kevin!
good progress man, from one drummer to another, I would just like to give you a bit of a tip bud, and that is: When you're deep into the art of drumming, don't just focus on the beats-dive into dynamics. Experiment with varying your stick intensity and control. Play a pattern softly, then gradually increase the intensity, and finally, bring it back down. This adds a whole new dimension to your playing and keeps things interesting. Dynamics can turn a good drummer into a great one. Give it a shot! (hope this helps)
id like to add that this goes for every instrument. dynamics are what separate the great songs from the good. Could you imagine karma police at the same intensity the whole way thru
When you have adhd it is really difficult to not try new things since you get bored so easily and you get way too excited to try the new thing that your hands literally itching to start doing it. I dont know how many times that I saw a sims 3 video and instal all of the expansion pack(Which is an arduous task that takes 2-3 days because of mods, fixes and custom content) then ditching it half playthought convinced that I wont play it anymore uninstall it and forget it for a year.

Kevs smile when he realised he was actually doing it made my day. from one adhder to another learning shit is hard even when you want to but you did it man doesnt matter how long it took, you damn well did it!! Hope to see another drum cover some time in the future
If it’s any consolation, as a violinist in orchestra I still find the whole keeping in time and counting bars thing challenging. And as someone who is more or less terrified of doing something new, it always blows me away when you keep popping up and decide to try new things. Props to you, Kevin
I'm a classical musician (clarinet gang) so watching Kevin write his weird music binary and his friends explanation was giving me a stroke. But it was really also inspiring for me to keep going with my own clarinet despite wanting to give up. The music environment for me can be really stifling and everything has to be done a certain way, and sometimes makes music so sterile. But watching Kevin experience so much joy reminds me of what it learning and playing music can be like
I've been in bed for over a week dealing with depression. Watching this legitimately gives me the motivation to get up and do something. Thank you and Well done! ❤

I'm so happy I've been able to see his journey through the years. i cant express how grateful i am to have known about him. what a beautiful soul. so hardworking, talented, kind, funny, just so amazing. much love to you Kevin for real.
This is honestly one of my favorite videos of you by far. I love that you talked about how you struggle with staying on task (same) but showed just how rewarding it is with something that’s easier for people who struggle with that. Not to mention your lyrics will forever play in my head instead of the real ones. Keep up the great content Kevin. You never cease to make me smile. 😊
This video brought such a smile to my face. Learning an instrument is probably one of the most fulfilling things to do in life, esp ones that are intimidating. I love seeing people's spark for music and this is just a wonderful example of that. As someone who's been wanting to learn the drums their whole life, this is so encouraging!
I am a drummer, and I'm in awe at the progress you made so quickly. Specially the staying in time thing. That's hard. Two thumbs up - well done! Nice vocals too, by the way.
oh Kevin, I used to play the drums when I was a teenager and I can't express how happy you made me feel with this video. I smiled all the way to the end and I could barely hold my tears with your cover. Congrats, you're amazing as always.
10:13, 15:55 This is true. I experienced it with helicopter training before. One day I was having a hard time getting down hovering (which is hard) and the next time I went, I suddenly realized I was doing it successfully and much better
I can't remember if I knew you had ADHD or not (part of my own issues with it means I never remember anything lol) but seeing videos like this is super inspiring. I love seeing the representation and normalisation of ADHD stuff, really reminds me that I'm not the only one
These videos are like the kindest push to get me to keep working on some of the many art projects I abandoned partway through. I don't know if this is the big project you'd been working on in the background, but I definitely appreciate this video! You've got to be one of the only people I will click on the video of, regardless of if it's even remotely related to the kinds of videos I'll typically watch. I _also_ deeply appreciate the casual mention of ADHD. I was diagnosed when I was very little, and told not to tell people that I had it. So the destigmatizing is much appreciated.

Loved the cover! This was really inspiring as someone who's always afraid of making mistakes. Please keep playing them because it really made your cover of the song a million times better :)
I didn’t expect to get hooked to this video this much, but this was a wonderful side project you accomplished. As someone that also suffers from focusing on stuff and finishing projects, I know how impressive all of this was. I’d love to see more side stuff from you in the future!
KEVIN THIS WAS AMAZING! Its been so great watching your musical progress for the last few years! It must have felt SO cool to play a whole song by yourself! Practice pays off, everyone! :)
Ngl watching this has actually made me smile for the first time this week. Going from struggle to actually being able to accomplish the task is actually so hard, especially when you have several things stopping you like ADHD or any other illness. Its seriously inspiring so thank you for this video Kevin 💙
As a lifelong musician (and longtime fan of you, and ADHD haver) this brings immeasurable joy to me. A lot of people are really put off by the prospect of starting an instrument and for you to get over the hump AND stick with it which is another thing that bounces people away is awesome, not in a weird condescend-y way but I'm proud as heck of you
I have ADHD too, and I'm trying to learn to juggle for my partner (it's a long story) and this has helped me feel better and not alone. You're a gift Kev (EDIT: She left me, so I'm no longer learning to juggle. Still appreciate you though Kev!)
The level of coordination and independence you developed in 30 days is amazing to see--especially considering you took a break in the middle! I think playing all of the "ands" on the hi-hat isn't something most people would pick up so quickly. And props to you for having the confidence to record the drums all in one take; that's something I still struggle with after 15 years of drumming! In addition, the jigsaw puzzle analogy is a great way to explain the breakthroughs that I sometimes experience when learning new things on the drums. I'll have to start using that. As someone who also has ADHD, I always find it inspiring to see the level of discipline and determination people exhibit when learning new things like this. Thanks for documenting your journey, Kevin!
No joke inspiring. I’ve been watching you for like 12 years give or take, since the CoD trolling days and OG Sims 3 Jim Pickens. I was 12 years old back then, and now I have a real career. Happy you’re still kicking ass
Wow that is crazy, so much must have changed in your life through the years of watching Kevin. You must be proud of everything you have overcame and the things you have achieved
I remember when you first said you'd be doing slightly different projects a while ago and wondering how they'd go. Seeing how happy you looked during the drum performance as you nailed it shows how much of a good decision it was. Much love Kevo keep up the great work
I'm so proud of you, Kevin! I literally danced throughout the song. You have such a lovely voice and amazing skills. It's inspiring how you persevered and went through the efforts to improve your drumming from lessons and coming up with methods that benefited you.
Heyyyy, thanks for being upfront about your ADHD and how it affects you. I was diagnosed earlier this year at 47 years old and I recognise the pattern of exciting beginnings to projects then moving onto something new and shiny. That you've come back to this project and kept up with it inspires me to ultimately follow through with my plan to stream 365 days of live looping with Ableton Live from not knowing anything to producing songs on-the-fly over a year. Maybe in the Spring =)
I love these videos where you're learning something new! It's so relateable for all us mere mortals that this stuff is hard, when the experts make it look so easy.
I really appreciate being able to see this journey Kevin. Like being able to get yourself to come back and keep trying even if you stopped for a while. As a recovering perfectionist, I have a hard time restarting if my plan didn’t go how I pictured it or I don’t pick something up as fast as I want. It’s nice to be reminded that what matters is that you keep trying.
Seeing kevin smile, looking so proud of himself as he plays at the end is actually really heart warming after seeing how much he struggled and how hard he worked. Good on him.
This makes me feel better about my hobby butter fingers. I'm shooting to get a bass guitar in April and I know I'm gonna fall off practicing a lot, but if you can do it during a move with a job and everything, I can too :)
I don’t play them anymore since they were sold off when I was a kid, but I learned to play the drums a while back. Watching you do this brought a flood of memories back. The 1234 beat, the bum tuh bum tsh, it was just really great reliving it through you. I suspect I also have ADHD, so I also would go months between learning XD. *You did amazing for the amount of time you gave yourself. I hope you continue to play the drums, they’re really such a fun instrument, and they you give so much musical freedom!*
As an ADHD brain around the same age as you, who played percussion for more than a decade a decade ago, but never learned to play a drum kit, I’m both proud of your ability to pick this up so quickly, and inspired to consider actually picking it up eventually.
This might be my new favourite video 🥹 Seeing him at the end smiling and happy with himself and what he's now able to do, knowing how much it took to get here and surprising himself, when at the start of the video it was like learning how to walk for the first time. It was an emotional high seeing the ending, maybe cuz the music lol. but its really inspiring to me since i face the same challenges in big projects. I'd love to learn an instrument one day!
Honestly the fact that you have such a huge grin on your face the whole time is so friggin wholesome 😊 you did such a great job and I'm glad you seemed to have such a good time exploring new talents and experiences!
Damn, i kinda teared up watching this, from all the years I've been in RUclips, no RUclipsr made me more proud than i am for you. And as someone who also struggles with sticking with longterm projects, this video made me feel if the creator of the dear leader Jim Pickens can do this, i can do it as well. Keep being you, Kevin, im sad i only found you this year through sims videos, but i am so glad i did now than never. Cheers!
I've played drums for about 20 years, but I found myself smiling like an idiot seeing somebody picking up the instrument and getting somewhere. Even if you don't stick with it, you'll always remember it fondly and be able to relate to other people more when talking about it. It doesn't need to be a conversation about drums or music, but you can connect over similar emotions. I think that's what makes projects like this so worthwhile. 😊
As someone who has played drums for years, I recognise your struggles. Keeping time for prolonged periods of time is way harder than it looks but you do get better at it. I learned from experience that it's way easier to just put on the song and start playing along that practicing with a metronome. It gives you a feel for the make-up and ambiance and overall makes it way easier. If anyone wants to try drums but feels a bit too intimidated, just go for it!
I think I didn't know how much I needed someone to show me that having ADHD troubles is okay. I'm so impressed by what you managed to do for yourself and how you've grown. Thanks for also showing the hard parts of having ADHD or a different problem with concentration/getting through hard parts. Thanks Kev, you've made accepting myself easier when I've felt like that wouldn't ever be a reachable goal for me ❤
I used to do drum lessons when I was in grade 10 and it was a lot of fun. Recently I've wanted to get back into it and this might be the kick for me to start looking into it
23:00 incredible way to sum it up! And thank you for advocating for music, for trying, for getting out of your own way. We need more people like you on the internet with platforms. You’re a beautiful human being, and I bet they’ll be a bunch of fans who will pick up an instrument or a horn from this video. It IS doable. Thank you thank you thank you for being a bright spot in what seems like a very dark world with the past few years of global events. You are doing a great thing.
The drums is something I've wanted to learn since my twenties, thanks to being the beat for my friends when we sung Guns and Roses Paradise City, but you need the space for the kit and I've never had that so that's stayed a decades long pipe dream. BUT this year I could really properly learn the bodhrán, because that's the drum that first caught my eye since my mam is a folk singer and owns one herself. Which she isn't proficient at, but she realised her pipe dream, literally, as she plays the pipe and the pibgorn.
I’m very excited for potential future Kevin covers on the Kevo channel where we can hear him play the drums AND guitar! Already loved them, but felt they were missing a beat. This is lit

The skateboarding video he did a while back haunted me, and now I've gone from someone who doesn't skate at all, to someone with three different longboards. I hope Kevin keeps making videos about trying new things and devoting himself to these new experiences. It's encouraging to watch!

Seeing Kevin smile while playing the drums during the song is just everything. I'm so proud. 🫶
And what if we can't quite hit that high note to end on it?
I teach flying and I always try never let a flight end on a bad landing. This is great advice.
This sounds like great advice that I needed to hear (as someone who doesn't know when to stop once the ADHD takes over lol). Thank you!
Kevin is a music genius
First the guitar
Second the countless souls of Jim's victims
Third the drums
And before guitar, his beautiful voice. He's a great singer.
I loved that bit about writing your own music language. One of the good parts of ADHD is ignoring how things are done and rebuilding them from the ground up yourself to make it easier to understand lol.

The constant smiling in this video made me really happy! During the cover you look like you're enjoying yourself and that's what's most important when creating art!!

Oh no I’m taking music theory next semester and I don’t play classical instruments
(That sentence was a little weird in terms of wording, so I will clarify, I have been listening to black metal for a very long time, and I am trying to say that knowing music theory is still good, even in such a peculiar musical genre.)
i ahve a question.... do i need to learn music theory n that shit if i wanna becoma a rapper? or like rap in general?
This is what I love about you. You aren't afraid to try something new, completely out of your comfort zone. I'm proud of your progress.

Great job, Kevin. Inspiring and fun work every time. We all love it.
You're a gift Kev
(EDIT: She left me, so I'm no longer learning to juggle.

Never realized how complicated drum sets were to build/assemble. Disappointed in Brendan Fraser for not even offering to help
As an ADHD brain around the same age as you, who played percussion for more than a decade a decade ago, but never learned to play a drum kit, I’m both proud of your ability to pick this up so quickly, and inspired to consider actually picking it up eventually.
Always love these learning videos!!! Thank you for being you, Kevin!
Cheers!
*Hugs you!*
*Hugs you!*

I have taught SO many kids concert band instruments, even the ones who could barely hack it would still join the high school band because we had so much fun together in my middle school program.
