I was raised sailing with four siblings and my dad…in a 23 foot Pearson ensign. Every summer was a huge adventure. Risk, storms, and learning how to be safe and prepare has made me optimistic, capable, with gallows humor and a salty vocab. We all revere nature and time with family. You are doing a world of good for your children, carry on, well done.

Not so much concerned for their safety as for their psychological/social needs. Kids that age need friends to learn how to act, how not to act and discover who they are. It can be done but it seems like an extreme challenge on a boat that moves around, just like a family moving house regularly would make it hard for their kids to make friends.

The ironic thing is that those people making comments about being irresponsible with your kids safety, are ruining their children for life by being helicopter parents, not allowing their kids to make their own decisions, learn to stay within their limits, and have a healthy knowledge of danger. You guys are balancing this perfectly. Kids were in lifejackets, life line netting, and know not to go towards the bow. What's the worse that's gonna happen? They fall overboard and one of you jump in after them, and come back and get them. Valuable lesson would have been learned! I grew up living on a sailboat and survived many valuable lessons learned this way! Thank you mom and dad. 😂👍 P.S. good job. I don't have it in me to have kids. That's what I've seen change with you guys the most. Your life before kids till your life with kids. Thank you for giving your children the best life. ♥️

The little skegs on the rudder are to prevent cavitation. When giving hard rudder a vortex can arise and suck air down the aft edge of the rudder and make it lose traction. The skegs prevent the vorfex going deeper.

    • @jackwickman2403
      @jackwickman2403 Год назад +2

It may help a little to resist cavitation/ventilation but seems small and too far aft to have a major effect. I think it's original purpose was to be a step to help swimmers climb out of the water without a boarding ladder. Always available with only a tiny drag penalty.

I would agree re the dangers of being on land. When I was a youngster, things were more safe, but we blew safety off the map, riding bicycles all over the city, playing on the docs and under them, eventually fishing off the docs, running all over the huge redwood wilderness, climbing 300 ft trees (I did that mostly) , setting up a rope swing that went completely over a redwood canyon , where you would land on a tree on the other side and push yourself off and land back where you took off from ! Need I say more ! I've forgotten where you were having your boat built ? So far, two in China, one in Vietnam.

You guys can't listen to all those people. You guys are great parents and you and your kids are living a dream. What if you lived at the beach or lake or in the mountains? Kids drown in barkyard pools and kids get hit by cars. Keep living the dream🤙

Don't worry about what other people think about your parenting. The parents on LaVagabonde deal with comments like that all the time. Someone always has something to say, just like I just had something to say. I think your children live an enviable life. Keep up the good job.

I can’t believe that some folk have said you are bad parents having young children onboard travelling the world on the world’s oceans …there’s no mistaking you guys are the most responsible parents ever .. you’ve done everything possible t9 ensure their safety by putting safety nets all around the vessel …you’ve introduced them to swimming in the ocean .. you’ve obviously have every life saving equipment possible on board … you supervise them when they have their run around time ..to release pent up energy … what more can you do … I think you’ve covered everything possible … as for them being aboard in the first place … we’ll why not … your giving them a good start in life …to explore and experience this life style … and I’m sure when the time comes when they are at schooling age you will do everything possible they get the best education possible …may that be home schooling or sending them to school back in Canada … ignore the fools that think otherwise … jealousy is a disease and obviously they don’t have a clue what they say ….
You have my up most respect ..and remember your excellent parents 🫶🏻❤

Anecdotal comments on hot temps have led to absolute hysteria. The world's climate has been relatively steady for decades. The news is fraudulent. I live in the Pacific Northwest of the USA/ Yeah, we have fires every year. But less so when compared to 80 years ago.
Thank you for a delightful video. I love the freedom you give your kids. They will be far more filled with wonder than 99% of kids in the West. My kids lived a similar life but on land. And they thrived. Challenges are what make us into stronger people. Love is an amazing thing. Your kids will climb mountains. They will experience things few others do. God bless you both and your kids.
    Really nice video

It's unfortunate that some people would leave negative comments. From what I've seen in your videos, you're amazing parents. I remember a few years back when people for leaving negative comments about Ashley.
I appreciate you always being open and honest in your videos.
You're doing an outstanding job raising your kids and giving them an opportunity to learn about the world as they grow up on a catamaran traveling around the world.

My nephew died when he drowned in a river a few years ago, he was seven years old and never learned to swim because his mother said water was too dangerous to let the kids play near, how ironic that turned out to be. I got my 1 mile swim badge when I was 9 years old and started my son swimming when he was still in nappies/ diapers, and I’d often have to suffer lectures on the danger of letting my son play in the river or the sea when our families got together, some of my best memories are my son jumping from riverbanks to me and spending hours floating down and swimming in rivers.
I know kids who’ve never climbed a tree, I find it amazing that parents are frightening their kids into being scared of things, I completely understand how so many kids are petrified of things I didn’t think twice about when I was young.

You are great parents and as such people need to look in their own back yard, not others. Glad you had a great break back home

I think you and your family are great, when my wife and I had our girls we took them on the sea not like your lovely boat just a little one. Well with being a very good canoeist I’m afraid some of our trips were I’m afraid on on the edge of what was safe. Don’t let these nay sayers get to you they are sad people who go through life without experiencing living. We lived and breathed for the pleasures we had both in our little trips around the Hebrides, cycling, walking, camping, how sad not to live life somewhere on the edge. The lovely thing was / is our girls now live their life that way. My grandads old saying ( he was a north east herring skipper) was “It’s better to travel than to arrive”

The extra steel on the rudder is for emergency control with ropes if the control fails

    • @jackwickman2403

That little fin on the back of the rudder is a step to help swimmers/man overboards climb out of the water without having a swim ladder deployed. Tying ropes to it to control the rudder after a steering gear failure could really work. Not its original purpose, but an excellent idea. Good thinking.
