My thoughts exactly; Yes every city/state will be different with cost in that regard but that is no different than gasoline. To be fair he did just prove that you can get 300 miles, but how often would I drive that car that way (practically never) So compared to my car it is more expensive to fill up a "tank" but I get half the miles out of it (even with the 93oct)
Like stated before this will be free for a bit but the idea is you charge at home overnight at lower cost. Or charge for "free" if you had integrated solar panels. I know not everyone can charge at home. So, I think it will mostly work for some people.
Porsche always understating everything. That pricing for charging looked pretty crazy though. Here in the UK it’s about 0.40p/0.50cents per kwh so that would of been about £26 or $32
It`s the price of what a person without a Member Card would pay. When you buy a car that goes with that Network you can have a discount card from the manufacturer. You pay a monthly fee and for that the charging cost way less. The first three years come with that Porsche in general for free. - They raised the prices now in Europe so cars from other brands (which didn`t finance the Network) don`t use and block with that the chargers anymore. As they just started now selling electric cars but at the moment the most electric cars sold are mainly Teslas. So they don`t have so much fast charging yet and before the raise, it was often filled with Teslas, as the Chargers are in a more convenient position compared to the Tesla Stations when you go down the main Highways.
I disagree sometimes with Matt's opinion but I must admit. He is such a professional and despite reviewing the car with his wife, he stands serious, maintains his integrity in the camera, commenting objectively in the car without any unnecessary "funny" comments that other journalists would do in a vlog-type of car review. From what I can understand, it's because Electrify America tiers by time and charge rate. He was probably charging at 350kwh which would be the highest tier. For comparison, Tesla Supercharger is 29-31c/kwh in California and is not time-based
he charged at a station equivalent of filling up at the lone gas station on a mountain pass. shit is expensive because it's the only available resource around and you do it bc either you can afford it or you have to bc you have no choice

The idea with most electric cars, is you charge them overnight at home. If you don't have a charger, you can install one, and eventually recuperate the costs, which in the long run will be cheaper than gasoline. This also does make a good case for owning a Tesla if you live in an area with lots of supercharging stations. Not to mention, Porsche does give free charges with electrify america for a few years

He charged it up to 99%, which takes substantially longer than going for a bit less. They did once charge a Taycan 4S from 5 to 88% (so about 250 miles of range) on an Electrify America station in 22.5 minutes, so you'd look at $23 then for 250 miles. Not cheap, but acceptable. P.S.: They do charge by time-spent-charging rather than per kWh to encourage more efficient usage of the charging points and battery.
I remember a few years ago I suggested that you do more vlog-style videos like this. I wanted you to call them "long takes." You told me you didn't want to do that. I don't know if you've changed your mind but I really enjoyed this video.
It’s cost 50 bucks to charge the car? How does that make any sense as an alternative to a gas car? I know most people charge at home, but that’s crazy expensive!
Please take a look at the electrify America homepage. With the pass+, which is 4$/month you can charge in Florida for 0.60$ at 350 kw. The Taycan goes from 5% to 80% of charging in 22 minutes. That means you pay for about 200 miles less than 14 $
People who are talking about the $51 are clearly misinformed of EV ownership reality. At a supercharger it costs me $9 to “fill up”. At home it’s like $4. Also if you add all of your “it only takes me 5 minutes to fill up” trips to the gas station vs my once in a while 30 minute fill up at a supercharger I’m 100% certain you spend WAY more of your time/life sitting at a pump. Meanwhile I’m in the bed sleeping while my car charges overnight. ICE isn’t dead, but I’m tired of reading these 2010 EV trolling comments. Get some new material.
The fact that you can get way more miles than the EPA rates for this Porsche (ie ~50% more!), whereas it’s not easy at all to achieve the EPA rated range for Tesla vehicles, makes me wonder; is their a ‘Teslagate’ in our future 🤔?? They have a lot of exceptional coders at Tesla...
i don’t think the results would be the same in new england with all the hills etc. i don’t manage nearly the same mpg or range as my west coast focus st counterparts. that’s a pretty flat drive over there. good for staying the headwind though...that’s important info as well
Totally thought Matt was going to walk right into the pool lol. This video was cool though, little different than your normal style but I was entertained. Wouldn't mind seeing more like this.
That’s tough. I recently did a 400 mile road trip in my Model 3 SR+... cost me $30 in total. Charged twice for 50 min each. Your trip 300 miles, $50 for a 30%-90% charge for 50 min, and a another charge from about ~10%-90% for an unknown amount of time and price. Based on your first charge the trip total cost you $120?!? That’s insane! I could go 1600 miles for every 300 it’s cost me in that Porsche. I save $450 for those same 1600 miles. Then again that is assuming I only use the supercharger, and you were to only use the electrify America chargers. Very well done video by the way. I’ve subscribed.
With gas prices really low, I don’t know why I would switch my commuter car to electric. Bring the EV to $25K and I’ll use it. For technical B roads, I’ll drive my 2850 lbs cayman and a 4C. And for a Porsche EV, I’ll consider the price at $70K since it’s a Porsche.
Man every time I see those windmills on the road to Palm Springs I think of the movie Less Than Zero when Robert Downey Jr’s character dies at the end with those windmills in the background.
For everybody saying they are sandbagging. It's a German car and as we have lots of unlimited Autobahn, no owner of a bloody Porsche will drive a max of 70 mph (~110 kph). More like 130 kph at minimum and 160 kph if unlimited. So the range fits the country the car is made in.
Could someone explain why the EPA determines such different ranges for the Taycan and long range Teslas when in reality they are very similar? Did Tesla just pay off the EPA?
Wow 😮 on road charging in 🇺🇸 is expensive, it’s equivalent is $0.37 per kw in UK 🇬🇧, yet petrol ⛽️ is equivalent $1:59 per litre 😬 The 4S is definitely the Model I’d have (with every optional extra) 😁. Great real world review 👍👍👍👍👍
Woahhh, that time-lapse montage was very vloggy Instagrammer inspired , and iI loved it. I love the video and I think that should be included in more videos!
EPA test includes starting with cold battery, not after super charging. The speed pattern does not include long coating, and factor in significant variability in speed. So cars with worst regenerative braking performance will have a lower rate. Also, they do not test Range mode, as you set the car to be driven as a Kia, not Porsche. The Taycan is good cruiser, as it is using the high gear, which allows it to be more efficient than rated. Take the Taycan to the country side and see how it does. Don’t get me wrong, Porsche is one of the two brands that I appreciate and am happy to see their first gen EV.
EPA is basically manipulating the range numbers to "remove" miles from any electric car that it's not a Tesla. Protectionism ? Financial interests in Tesla stock ? Just plain fanboys ? Pick one ;)
@@microastro i have spent some thoughts on this too. i mean literally every european car gets catastrophic epa ratings but perform better. on the taycan there is a huge gap between rating and reality.

Set your cruise at 70 in Texas and you are getting RUN OVER. That is hypermiling around here 😆 curious if the rated range is to make sure those of us that do 80 more often get a realistic range.
If I’m reading the stats right, the car was averaging 56 mph. At that average, all electric vehicles will exceed their rated miles. He stated that he was getting great mileage despite hitting traffic. It’s the exact opposite with EVs. Hitting traffic actually improves consumption. With that said, 295 w/mi is not bad. Model S performance tested at that same speed is roughly 265 w/mi.
the average is not the speed the car did most of the time you moron. it means he was going normal highway speed and then he got stuck in traffic. also "w/mi" is not a thing. god some people..
Electrify America (and Ionity in Europe) is membership based and for members the cost is about the same as for supercharging. Porsche buyers get 3 years free chargning, after that 0.25$/kWh or something. The non-member price you see in this video is set to keep Teslas from clogging the chargers. They are open for everyone but relatively expensive for non-members. But still available in a crisis, unlike TSC.
Lul, you ever been to Germany? If you drive on unlimited Autobahn, nobody owning a Porsche is like going 110 kph (equaling 70 mph). 130 at least and more like 150+ (95 mph). For us the range works nearly 1:1.

Oh some nice Canadian roads are on the Agenda for that road trip I see! Hope we get to see some videos showing those spots off Matt! Honestly I'm not surprised the Taycan can do better than the EPA rating it always seemed oddly low to begin with and the EPA rating is just an estimate of the average efficiency. EV's are still sensitive to the cold and if it was 30F outside, you had a large incline for most of your journey or drove at say 75mph the range would have looked much closer to as advertised but that's common across all EV's.

Stuka87 That’s actually pretty smart
That's $51 for ~200 miles of driving range.... Think about that.
My thoughts exactly; Yes every city/state will be different with cost in that regard but that is no different than gasoline.
To be fair he did just prove that you can get 300 miles, but how often would I drive that car that way (practically never)
So compared to my car it is more expensive to fill up a "tank" but I get half the miles out of it (even with the 93oct)
It's cheaper to drive a Raptor towing the Taycan, lol
Porsche gives you three years of free charging through electrify America. But I do see your point.
Like stated before this will be free for a bit but the idea is you charge at home overnight at lower cost. Or charge for "free" if you had integrated solar panels. I know not everyone can charge at home. So, I think it will mostly work for some people.
@@juliocgt Nothing is "free", it's simply a promotion. Eventually you must pay.
So they don`t have so much fast charging yet and before the raise, it was often filled with Teslas, as the Chargers are in a more convenient position compared to the Tesla Stations when you go down the main Highways.
eddiefara In the states the average cost of electricity is about 0.12$/kwh, so it’s much cheaper to charge at home
Yeah $30 sounds better to me, and would make it equivalent to a 30mpg gasoline car.
Marc Nobel thanks for the info, that makes more sense
RSK 281 yeah same here. I’m talking about Rapid Charging at these charging stations which always costs more than at home
Congrats
I love this Porsche! 294 miles, I take it. And, I can't drive continuously for 5 hours anyway even with a couple of 5-10 minutes stops. I would be feeling extremely tired. Love your video! Thanks a lot.
at 2:01, how come that the kwh price is 0.77$/Kwh ? when looking at the average US price (0.13$/Kwh) it's almost 6 times more expensive. do just the infrastructure and the "supercharger" fee rise the price by so much ?
From what I can understand, it's because Electrify America tiers by time and charge rate. He was probably charging at 350kwh which would be the highest tier. For comparison, Tesla Supercharger is 29-31c/kwh in California and is not time-based
Frank L where exactly in ca have you seen such prices?
I see we are already being assfucked for charging costs.
he charged at a station equivalent of filling up at the lone gas station on a mountain pass. shit is expensive because it's the only available resource around and you do it bc either you can afford it or you have to bc you have no choice
Chorizo and Cheese? Yum!
$51 to charge up!
With current gas prices, that's like 800 miles worth of fuel in a Corvette! To think that gas is paying for the road taxes!
What's a tank of premium cost?
@@TheJCars10s That has variables to it, different size tanks. In my car $35 and I get 450 miles to a tank
@@TheJCars10s Almost any tank will have more range, and gas prices vary. National average for a gallon of premium is around $2.45/gallon, so pick a tank and do the math. Even if gas were $4.50/gallon, it would be cheaper to drive a V10 Viper.
The idea with most electric cars, is you charge them overnight at home. If you don't have a charger, you can install one, and eventually recuperate the costs, which in the long run will be cheaper than gasoline. This also does make a good case for owning a Tesla if you live in an area with lots of supercharging stations.
Not to mention, Porsche does give free charges with electrify america for a few years
That is why you should NOT buy any other ev but Tesla yet. Infrastructure is a key, full change at any supercharging station will be around $15 max.
Man, the cost of the charge is just too much.
Macht Schnell Well, not if you can afford a Porsche.
also charge at home if you can.
Everyone buying these has a home and doesn’t mind the cost to charge. The average Porsche owner makes well over $500k a year and has 6 other cars according to Spike Feresten on his podcast
@@PigglyWigglyDeluxe Porsche's internal figure was somewhere in the ~350k area. Average doesn't matter either, because many billionaires have porsches, which is enough to skew up that figure dramatically. Median is a better estimator.
Matt, what are you smoking to celebrate this holiday? Your fans need to know.

I remember a few years ago I suggested that you do more vlog-style videos like this. I wanted you to call them "long takes."
You told me you didn't want to do that.
I don't know if you've changed your mind but I really enjoyed this video.
Have you never changed your mind?
Really liked the style / edit of this video! More of these please!
What is the range like if you drive enthusiastically?
It’s cost 50 bucks to charge the car? How does that make any sense as an alternative to a gas car? I know most people charge at home, but that’s crazy expensive!
Can't wait for the "Just the noise"... Haha
David J - I see what you did there! Pretty clever!
Yet again, Porsche under-promises and over-delivers 😉!
For a price
@@Samuel-ym7ls It's a sports car?
Not a Tesla?
Kinky Streets it’s 20 minutes if you charge it to 85% 😉
@@Samuel-ym7ls Get what you pay for.
Kinky Streets don’t worry you weren’t the targeted customer.
Dream combo is electric daily and gas powered sports car for actual "driving".
Thanks a lot for this cool and realistic test buddy! That shows the real facts of this car regarding efficiency and coolness:-)
The EPA who created Dieselgate regularly tries to damage German competitors.
kraenk12 I’m just struggling with an explanation for the vast discrepancy between Porsches EPA results versus actual, compared to Tesla’s…
4:00 must be nice to eat in a brand new car and give 0 f@cks about making a mess when is not your car, right? Love it!! 😉😎✌️
i don’t think the results would be the same in new england with all the hills etc. i don’t manage nearly the same mpg or range as my west coast focus st counterparts. that’s a pretty flat drive over there. good for staying the headwind though...that’s important info as well
Totally thought Matt was going to walk right into the pool lol. This video was cool though, little different than your normal style but I was entertained. Wouldn't mind seeing more like this.
A sudden end! did the camera run out of charge? Should have got a Porsche battery 😀
I’ve subscribed.
your math really sucks. that the problem.
Matt, what brand of sunglasses are you wearing? Thanks.
Nice to see a review with the family enjoying a day out.
Nice Matt, what is the MSRP of this car ??? with those options ?
With gas prices really low, I don’t know why I would switch my commuter car to electric. Bring the EV to $25K and I’ll use it. For technical B roads, I’ll drive my 2850 lbs cayman and a 4C. And for a Porsche EV, I’ll consider the price at $70K since it’s a Porsche.
Great job!! You can drive straight as good as you drive the curves!
Nice but.... Did you have the Radio on at all????? 😎😷🤔
Back doesn’t hurt but your shirt said “Ass bled” during most of the in car lol. Enjoyed the video!
Nice car! But No one drives 70mph on freeway in SoCal...
how fast do they drive?
lucian 80mph and the range will be significantly lower than 70mph.
@@zyxt9117 yeah, that's one of the downsides of EVs
Man every time I see those windmills on the road to Palm Springs I think of the movie Less Than Zero when Robert Downey Jr’s character dies at the end with those windmills in the background.
That title though lmao
no shit you got way more than the EPA range, you drove at an average speed of 55mph.
Hi Sarah! ...Bye Sarah!
EPA is American and tries to damage German competitors, just as they did with VW and the Diesels.
Meh, I do regular round trips to Rancho Mirage from Long Beach in my I-PACE with a single charge. What's the miles/kWh consumption?
in this particular case 29.4 kwh for 100 miles - 8:36
You paid $50 to fill that thing up with electricity? You got to be out of your mind! Everybody should flee California now!
Who else wanted the title to be “I SMOKED in the new TAYCAN on 4/20”
Wow 😮 on road charging in 🇺🇸 is expensive, it’s equivalent is $0.37 per kw in UK 🇬🇧, yet petrol ⛽️ is equivalent $1:59 per litre 😬
The 4S is definitely the Model I’d have (with every optional extra) 😁. Great real world review 👍👍👍👍👍
These are good looking cars, they always look pretty small in the videos.
Thank you for such great content keep up the great work.
Wouldn't the same apply to the EPA's range for ever other vehicle since they use the same standards?
@Marius Ipad
Right...and Porsche never lies. Dieselgate anyone?
Wow, I hope that in the US charging an electric car is not that high because that is ridiculous.
But what a nice car, good range as well in my opinion
A nice side trip in Palm Springs...

Woahhh, that time-lapse montage was very vloggy Instagrammer inspired , and iI loved it. I love the video and I think that should be included in more videos!
This is just about the worst advertisment for Electricfy America possible. What a ripoff.
cheese sandwich123 agree, lol.
Matt, is that the 126710BLRO? If so, 👍🏼.
Nice!, looking forward to the canyon review!
Don't know what the heck EPA is doing if their numbers are "supposed" to reflect real life range.
That charge is not cheap though...
@@Andi-ft5rt Well at least American buyers interested in European cars can refer to WLTP results for more realistic numbers.
@Paulo Almeida Yes, American protectionism at work again. They are trying to kill Tesla's real competition.
According to porsche, Tesla is not a competitor. Also, read that EPA actually tested taycan on short distance and used math to get their estimated range, where other manufacturers were able to do their own testing and send to EPA. Cant remember the article, but showed up on my google news app.
Mat Quarantine is great you get to take a drive with the wife visit friends. And test out the range it’s a win win all the way around enjoy 👍
Any conversation about technology aside, that's the sexiest looking sedan on the market
One does have to think what happened to the EPA testing that's making it so far out from real world range. WLTP doesn't have this issue
Cartone
The .70 factor that the EPA applied (on 2 cycle test), that the Taycan obviously doesn't need.
I've read that most manufacturers send in their own range test, but the EPA decided to test themselves for Taycan. Their tests are only short distances and then they use math to estimate range. I cant remember who wrote the article, but it popped up on my google news app.
Not too surprised. Big battery and great design/aerodynamics. There is no reason why it would be not be able to easily go through 250 and even come close to 300 miles.
All things considered, this was really impressive.
I own a New Porsche Cayenne and a New Tesla Model 3.....When we took the Cayenne in for Service at the Porsche Dealer- I was able to take the new Taycan for the afternoon.
It is a very nice car and very stylish. The only issue is the PRICE.
So what is that EPA rating worth? Isn't it supposed to be realistic? I know the European system is not realistic, but at least you know that it isn't.

Honestly I'm not surprised the Taycan can do better than the EPA rating it always seemed oddly low to begin with
and the EPA rating is just an estimate of the average efficiency.
EV's are still sensitive to the cold and if it was 30F outside, you had a large incline for most of your journey
or drove at say 75mph the range would have looked much closer to as advertised but that's common
across all EV's.
Taycan looks great in that colour scheme. Also, that salsicce looks tasty -- tartufo perhaps?
