I love Porsche options. Paid options on my car include: painting the badge on the back of the car, leather sun visors, cruise control, bluetooth and having a tinted bit on the top of the windscreen. Cruise control especially should have been standard on literally any car in the last 10 years but Porsche still charge extra! Mine doesn't even have sat nav. That B pillar capping was already scratched up, like a mid-90's Peugeot. To be honest the higher spec Peugeots these days look nicer than that interior!
Quite enlightening? Thought you were about to say quite electrifying or shocking. ;-D Here's a potential solution to your major issue (with which I agree) with the Taycan: when you give it back to Porsche, tell them to pop around to Bentley for a lesson in how to do an interior. To put it another way, imagine the Taycan with the QUALITY of the interior from the Conti GT. Not having driven either, I will say I think the Conti GT's interior is probably the most impressive I've seen in the last few years; from all the reviews, it appears to be truly gorgeous. Would that make it the best possible version of whatever this car is for you? Cheers
I picked up a turbo cross turismo a couple of weeks ago. It only had 8000 on the clock and the spec must have been around £140,000 I paid just over half that!! It has a practically unlimited battery warranty and full two year warranty with discount fast charging. And yes it's everything James says it is. Jay, To preface my comments I think your take on the social media car review world is spot on and I recommend the channel to all of my friends/colleagues that are interested in cars. However I want to take issue with your opinion and the way it is expressed of the 992. Mainly because you were a big fan of the 991.2 GTS. I owned a 991.2 GTS for 18 months and now a 992 Carrera S for the past 7 months. I would like to point out the following which i think should be mentioned when you discuss the 992. It is massively spec dependant. Essentially when you drive the manual 991.2 GTS you really enjoyed it. Well the Carrera 2s can be specced to be incredibly similar to that car. Rear wheel steer, lowered suspension, sports exhaust, manual gearbox, alcantara parts in the cabin, black accents in all the right places. I don't profess to know more about 911's than you or to try and tell somebody their opinion is wrong. However I must say that driving a cabriolet(higher suspension), no sport design kit, hump at the back looks bigger as its cabriolet, 911 font badge on rear can be deleted, PDK instead of manual and then the opinion of the entire Carrera range choices being made from that felt a little harsh. Problems such as piano black accents, 5 dials behind the wheel, cheap feeling switches mixed with expensive feeling switches were all problems that existed with the 991.2 but are not mentioned as people are used to that now and don't see it any longer. I see the fact the 992 can feel like a GT car on the motorway yet just as sporty as the GTS on a B road as an advantage. The difference between normal and sport plus driving modes are vast in the 992 where as in the 991.2 GTS it was smaller. This mixed with the fact the 992 Carrera S can match most lap times of the 991.2 GTS shows that Porsche have broadened its abilities and lost none of it appeal. Except the exhaust note, PPF are the weak point of any Porsche sold from 2020 onwards. Lastly, keep up all the excellent content and good luck with all your work in 2021.
I did a Tesla 3P and an old Porsche instead for a lot less money but if you have the coin to try it; it's not like it's a forever car, it's a now car. Looks fun.
I love your review, being a Taycan CT owner for about a year, some of my experiences: a) I can see everything on my dash, granted it took me some time to find a good seating position and see everything b) You can assign the diamond square button to skip songs or some other function c) I have a similar grey interior (colors are again expensive) doesn't bother me; 'the dullness" is compensated with the dynamic color settings in the doors, central console, etc. - they are enough mood setting. You really should do a longer review to discover the car :)
If you're buying a car that's fine, if you're reviewing a car you have to categorise. Otherwise he'd say it's got rubbish boot space compare to the Volvo 750R estate, just buy that instead.
Because, it’s hard to make a use case to buy it, that’s why. A Model 3 Performance is a better EV at half the price. With more range and similar performance. The Taycan is a better car, and a proper Porsche. But for everyday, the Taycan lacks the interior room or stowage space of a Panamera. So it’s compromised for longer trips, or longer commutes. It’s not an emotional sports car you would buy for weekend fun. And again, it’s hideously expensive. It’s basically the car you commute in when you have a boat load of money to spend and already have 3 or more cars. For that, it’s unparalleled. I am a Porsche owner and my daily driver is a Model 3 Performance. I drove a Taycan Turbo expecting to leave the dealership figuring out how to trade in the Tesla for one. I didn’t feel compelled to. It’s a fantastic car, but it’s not so easily defined....
@@BlueAxeRacer Is it? A torque converter/planetary gear automatic is fundamentally different from a dual clutch which is fundamentally different from a manual. A diesel is fundamentally different from a petrol engine. A turbo is fundamentally different from a natural. FWD, RWD and AWD are all fundamentally different. This is just another type of engine and from a driving enthusiast's point of view I'd say it has lots going for it. Ridiculous power. Instant torque throughout the entire range. No maintenance requirements to speak of. The only thing some may miss is the noise but after all, having this type of performance in total silence is quite an experience in its own right.
Model 3 owner in Oz. You make a good point here about leccy’s having an advantage in short reviews, but Taycan shows these things are fun in their own way.
Thank you for doing this review Jay Emm - always enjoy your channel. I have owned my Taycan Turbo for 2 months and assure you, the thrill does not wear off!! I have owned my 993 C2 for a decade and i think I’ve found the perfect complement.. (do you agree?) i can even fit the whole family! I can’t see me keeping the Taycan that long tho as I’m sure the technology will be redundant in a few years. But enjoying it for now! Thanks again. (P.s i think Porsche dealers are radiohead listeners to blame for boring interiors.. My dealer advised my black-on-black interior and I regret it!).
Its a great drive isn't it. Unfortunately the Turbo was out when I dropped into Reading for my drive but overall its a really accomplished piece of work. Hoping to get my order in once the factory reopens! Grrrr
Night vision may be useless to you, but if you live in the country and have to drive when deer are out, it is a lifesaver. We have it on a couple of vehicles and it has saved my wife at least three times from collisions.
Actually, the video is quite interesting, however having taken delivery of a Taycan Cross Turismo 4S. Actually I can honestly say having driven over 1600 miles in 4 weeks. With a black interior, I have been blown away, the car has excelled in every point. Yes the extras add up, but the options allow you to configure the far the way you want. So in a nutshell I couldn’t have wanted for anything else, the perfect all rounder.
I've read somweher the reason for the cheap plastic in the door sill is that Porsche sensed this would be a high wear area due to the B pillar being shifted forward compared to other cars, and taller people would be straddling against the B pillar when moving and out of the car.
I had NightVision on a BMW 7series I used to own and I really appreciated it. Would light up pedestrians on dark roads and wildlife sitting in the woods next to the road way before you'd spot them... Sure might not be for everyone, but I'll spec it on my next new, or look for it when I buy my next used one.
When you buy a Porsche you buy performance first. The fun begins when you get to add all those options you want - that is the fun of buying a Porsche. If you want more of a turn-key, high performance car with most options already picked for you, then go buy a Ferrari. I drive a second generation Panamera Turbo and I would buy another one tomorrow, AND have great fun picking out ALL those options!
It's a sports saloon. The Panermera used to be one, but I guess it got too fat. There was also the Aston Martin Rapide, which is now dead, and the Maserati Quattroporte, which might be the only other one left.
Maybe 200 miles range under ideal conditions is good enough in the UK, it's not a big place but here in Canada it would be pretty much useless, especially in winter except as a daily commuter.
James, after 20000km /6mnths behind the steering wheel in one, I can tell you what it is; it’s the best car on sale today. Period. Thank’s for reviewing it❤️ As far as I see, the Taycan has only one shortcoming; the lack of a tow bar for trailering shit to the dump. Just love it. And for those who wonder, it’ll do 490km of range during summer and 360km on snow covered Scandinavian frozen roads. I’m literally just in from a 710km commute. Average consumption: 25,8kWh/100km this time in really cold weather over mountainous winter passes. During summer: 17-18kWh/100km. Don’t even miss the sound of the 911
Amazing piece of kit. Chris Harris and Jason Plato, both serial 911 owners, really rate it having thrashed it on the track and achieved stonking lap times, so you can’t argue that it’s a technological marvel.
Had one as a loan car for three days. Agree interior quality is not what it should be which is what I thought when I drove the 992. Biggest issue the Taycan has is the charging network which i got to fully experience as no home charging so totally reliant on it. In short the network of fast chargers isn’t anywhere near comprehensive enough and charging at an Ionity is very expensive...from memory £35 for 140 Miles’s of range. Amazing motorway car and totally agree about the ride.
James, there are two spaces on both sides of the dails of the dashboard where your steering wheel will fit right in. You think Porsche didn't think of that and just put a standard steering wheel in there? You just haven't set your steering wheel correctly. Lol. I own one myself.
It’s odd they didn’t give it the special electric sound option, which gives you some noise (like a Star Wars machine). I think the Taycan is Porsche knowing they can’t do an electric sports car yet, but needing to introduce the future in something sexier than a cross-over. So, 4-door fastback it is.
Their goal is to crush Tesla, and it does in every way aside from range. But you don't take a Tesla on a long cross country road trip, either. Nobody I know who has the money is now looking at the Tesla S, simply because this, well, is a Porsche.
I have a 2020 Macan GTS and a 991.2 GT3 and really interested in the review, would definitely consider one but with a more practical body shell and a better range, ideally more like the 300 mile you get in the Tesla. Incredible what the Porsche engineers do with a 2.5 ton car though.
Seen 2 Porsche Macan Electrics, heavily camo'ed on the North coast of NSW Australia, recharging.the coy engineers said they were testing for the upcoming release. Baby blue camo looked good as did the red/grey colour of the other one. I think the Macan E will be a big seller.
He didn't show the back seats - it's not good news back there, and the luggage compartment is not generous. But there is a Sports Turismo version coming, so I have somewhere to stow my dogs. I'd love it if it came as a 3 door, but there's no chance. Something like the BMW flying breadvan (Z3 M Coupé) in EV format. But it's a niche too far.
A little bit late to this party. However, we've ordered a pair of Taycan 4s Cross Turismos for myself and my business partner. (Yes it's a tax thing). I really couldn't believe how well this car drove.
JayEmm a little apples and oranges as far s a 911 and the Taycan go in my opinion. It does not handle like a high end 911 but yes very fast in a straight line.
thanks for the good and not overly long review. It looks like Porsche needs to significantly improve this dull interior, and actually the exterior needs a small improvement, the headlights have a strange drop at their ends, that looks like they are melting away. IT may make the T more recognizable, but not in a great way. Cars at this price level should look like works of art. The Range is also an issue. Tesla has models with easy 400 miles ranges in the more demanding US EPA cycle, probably 450 miles or 500 in the Euro-calcs. THe Taycan falls quite short of that. So when you chose to return in it, you were lucky the drive was a short one and you could do it.
I looked multiple times at the Taycan already... looks great, but with that tailgate and the super low roof it does not do well for me in terms of practicality and headroom compared to a Panamera. The list of options are crazy on any Porsche as always ... will be interesting how the residuals will be after 3-4 years and how much of the battery is still useable after that time.
Out if all the EVs out there this is the only one that as a car enthusiast really captures my attention. Not quite sure what it is but if I won the lottery I'd have one in my 3 car garage. Great review James 👍
Normal Benters? Probably not. But that's what Benters are for - wafting around. Sporting Benters are like calling the fastest elephant sporty - but if you want a Benters with sporty attributes then sir can sign on this dotted line. Porsche and Benters are part of VAG so will be under orders not to compete (not directly) so a sporty Porsche saloon is expected to be better at the faster stuff. As the review demonstrated - not so good on cabin furniture - the money went to the right place. I run an elderly Porsche - it makes a great GT car - fast, stable and surprisingly comfortable - but it's noisy and lacking luggage space (but I'm single so I don't care much). It's absolutely brilliant at 80-90 MPH, dammit (70-80 I could get away with in the UK). Porsche absolutely nail the driving at speed thing - but it's usually a bit too fast for the authorities. The suspension/damping is tuned for enthusiastic, not slow.
Hi James, great review overall and of course you liked the way it drives - who wouldn't? I just traded my GT3 in for a Taycan last month.. :) Loved how you accidentally mentioned miles per tank, that was worth a chuckle. Just wanted to mention, because you were driving in Normal mode mostly, the whole suspension and ride height will change when you go into Sport Plus or even Sport, and the rear transmission will shift into 1st gear. It also begins to use 'recuperation', so you can use it for a bit more 'engine braking' if you want. It's an astonishing car, and the lucky few of us who've driven them need to keep spreading the word. Cheers
So let's consider this for the autobahn customer. 260kmph top speed and 400km range = stop every 1.5 hours to recharge. Better hope there's the 225kw rapid charger or you'll be faster getting to any destination above 400km in a diesel Polo. As an exercise in engineering excellence it is very good but what's it for??? I live in South Australia where we can go 400km without even an electric supply. I'll keep my diesel Mercedes thanks.
Great review. I like that you focus on details that I as an owner would also annoy me (the plastic in the sill, the door handles, etc...). Waiting for the estate version!
How far do you drive a day? As a daily it'd do perfectly - it's those occasional journeys into the middle of nowhere that would frighten me. It's bad enough locating dinosaur juice in the back of beyond - I carry a can of 'please get me to the next fuel station' - not something you can do with an EV. But range anxiety? Only an issue a couple of times a year (for me). Stick to the main routes and it'll be fine, especially if you plan ahead like you should anyway.
I disagree that the steering wheel blocks chunks of the display panel. I own a Taycan Turbo and when I’m sitting in the drivers seat I feel they’ve done a brilliant job in design. The steering wheel is well placed such that the wheel is within black zone with no display and I can see ALL of the data. It’s really quite amazing and efficient design by the Porsche engineers. Congrats Porsche!!

I remember buying Turbo sunglasses. Effect on speed was negligible...
And on computers !
Yeah, but this is a Porsche and they're an engineering company.
It's disappointing that the marketing wankers won - I bet the enginerds are spitting feathers. It wouldn't stop me buying...because I have a hair dryer and I'd have the legend off in ten minutes, to go back on at resale.
@@pd4165 Marketing always wins. That's why we have the Cayenne.
And if the Cayenne wasn't there, Porsche would no longer be there.
Still a great car of course, but the fact you can literally spec a few Porsche cars up to double their list price is hilarious. Would love a Taycan too, just not in that spec...
Don't forget floor mats :)
@@ashlinr38 True, not sure if the mats on mine were an option...I'll have to check that now! 😀
It's disappointing to see that modern prestige German cars are still pretty stingy when it comes to standard equipment and the prices for certain options.

Thats where the money comes in.

I remember seen a Taycan Turbo S in person in Toronto last year in the launch spec, white with the white and black wheels, that thing is sick one of the best looking cars on the road by a mile.
You can skip track on the wheel, the custom function button to the right of the volume knob can be set to skip track :)
Yes, but why was this not just...a specific option as it has been on basically everything for the last 2 decades?
@@MattBeardless agree, but I set it as skip track the day I got and never thought about it since.

I’d buy this over a Tesla any day, especially since Porsche workers are properly unionized. Maybe a Tesla will be on my wishlist if I ever decide to get a shoddily built unreliable gimmick-fest.
Are you sure, the Tesla has a whoopee cushion as standard, not even available as an option on the Porsche. And if it were, they would charge you 3000 pounds for it.
Not really into electric cars, but what the hell, this thing is so much better than a tesla in every way except price and range. But you do get what you're paying for and more.
I don't know where on earth you get the idea that Teslas are unreliable
How would a Tesla be unreliable? There's not really much to go wrong.

I have the 4S in Stormtrooper spec. I’ve been delighted having owned the Panamera E-Hybrid and 992 4S but that scratchy black plastic on the lower b pillar has driven me nuts in each car, there doesn’t seem to be an option to cover it in alcantara or leather which is such a letdown.
Find an upholstery shop and see if they can do it for you. Have a neighbor who is an NBA player and one time he got an Escalade and he got the roof, pillars and sun visors reupholstered in Ultra Suede and it was fantastic.

I'd love to try one and I'm sure they're immense but those wheels look awful in black.
I'm pretty sure Porsche can supply another colour.
I'm sure they can, I was merely commenting on how bad they look in black on this particular car, in my opinion.

Can you daily a 993? My old Porker is tucked into my garage for the winter and then gets driven mainly at weekends, though I'd love to drive it every day (apart from on ice - I've done the backwards THROUGH a tree thing - never again).
For a daily I'd take the upcoming Taycan Sports Turismo - I have two dogs and they don't fit in the back of an old Porker - they complain worse than children about the bucket seats.
@@pd4165 Fair point , though I do use mine 2 or 3 times a week, year round. I do agree with you about Porsche options. That’s the one thing that gets me with Porsche weather it’s the taycan or any other Porsche. My brother has the macan and has about £15000 worth of options and when we go though what they are I would say that’s standard on my Kia e Niro and that’s standard and so on. Like adaptive cruise control £1200 on the Porsche as you say folding mirrors should be standard especially with a car that wide. And having to pay extra for a type 2 cable is a joke. The point I’m making is don’t get me wrong the Porsche range is brilliant and well built and the Taycan I love but I do think they should be a more generous with the standard equipment.
I think harrys garage made a very good point on this car. Might aswell get the panamera hybrid 🤷♂️

Here's a potential solution to your major issue (with which I agree) with the Taycan: when you give it back to Porsche, tell them to pop around to Bentley for a lesson in how to do an interior.

Why does everything need to be categorized these days? Why can't it be just a.... car. If you like it.... buy it. If you don't...
Well said👍👍
Because how you power it is fundamentally different?

Actually, the video is quite interesting, however having taken delivery of a Taycan Cross Turismo 4S. Actually I can honestly say having driven over 1600 miles in 4 weeks. So in a nutshell I couldn’t have wanted for anything else, the perfect all rounder.
Interesting Petrolhead review of new high end EV capabilities. Thanks Jay.
It certainly looks great! Love the colour.
Retrospectively, I dont think you expected it to be as as good as it was....did you!?

Love the Taycan. EVM just reviewed that exact registered car before Xmas and left his go pro in it. Did you find it if you reviewed it after him?
Don’t even miss the sound of the 911
After 30000 km in 11 months Taycan Turbo S I can comply. As a daily this is unbeatable. For week-ends, 911 Turbo S though...
Revisiting this video as the first 30k Taycan is just around the corner so I'm tempted now.

When I drove one, totally changed my mind on EV. Was stuck what to replace my i8 with but on the list 😁
Like the Panamera I did not like the look of it on paper but is much nicer looking when seen on the road.
It’s a tax free executive saloon.

They have a whoosh option - he didn't try it until after filming (and didn't like it).
Very mad car and very good looking on the outside. I agree about the interior.
First thing that came to mind seeing one of these was ''Is that one of those new supras?''
🤣 cant believe folding wing mirrors is an option on a car like that gusse it shortens the range 😂
It's like watching JC reviews from the 90s. Which is a huge compliment by the way. Great content.

Same issue in my 991.2. The steering wheel obscures the dials on the far right and far left. I always thought that was a huge oversight.
JayEmm a little apples and oranges as far s a 911 and the Taycan go in my opinion. It does not handle like a high end 911 but yes very fast in a straight line.
I too forgot to put it in sport mode during my test drive... the lack of exhaust sound really makes you forget about Sport Mode, to be honest.
thanks for the good and not overly long review.
Is it really more confortable than the bentley though?
Loved how you accidentally mentioned miles per tank, that was worth a chuckle.
Cheers

@@JayEmmOnCars You are always welcome.
I would say its a GT car, although public charging needs to be better to use as a daily driver
Good review.
