China has the unenviable task of feeding one-fifth of the world’s population with less than 10 per cent of the world’s arable land. In recent years, the country’s leadership has regarded food security as one of the key components of national security. So what has been done to fulfil President Xi Jinping’s order that “the rice bowl of Chinese people should firmly be held in their own hands”?

with a 1.4 billion huge population and only 12% arable land of it's size, any country would be extremely concerned about it's food security
Especially since their disastrous environmental policy has poisoned much of their land. Sad.

Example India
Well, in a United Nations poll asking "is food a human right?" every country said yes, except two. These two were the United States and Israel. The rest of the world, you could say, is concerned about food security because they live in reality.
The US feeds a lot of the rest of the world’s lower-power countries and countries with limited food production capacity.

The Communist Party of China has more 90 million members now, it's impossible now to destroy it, consider their resiliency to protect the constitution
I am 12 and I have never heard of food import
I think China's food security situation will improve over time. Aside from the measures listed in the video, incl. increased use of GMO crops and improved farming practices, there are other noteworthy aspects:
-As China's population decreases, land appropriation will also decrease and there will be more food per person, increasing by around 8% in 2040 and 17% in 2050 (all else being equal).
-China has reclaimed, and continues to reclaim land along its coastline, especially in Jiangsu. Shanghai alone has reclaimed over 400 Sq. km. (600,000 mou) in the last 30 years. A lot of this has been turned into very productive farmland.
-On the downside, marginal lands will likely become depopulated over time due to low productivity. Those areas only produce enough to feed the local population, and neither add nor detract from the total calculation.
Increased use of GMO will put millions of peoples health at risk.

well in the past dozens of dynasties fell because the government failed to secure food in times of crisis
When u have billions of population food is ur one of main concern
Food security is a matter of life and death. Why is that even a question?
It's a question if you know the agriculture section of many third world countries are destroyed by the enticement of upgrading their economic structure under the background of globalization. Even for some countries with high GDP per capita, like Mexico whose agriculture have been completely destroyed by cheap product imported from US, the failure of protecting the farmers lead to severe social problems, one of which is drug cartel.
I don’t think this is a difficult question to answer. A country needs to be able to feed its population.
Likewise in other high population countries. Tummies can't lie.
Every country should be concerned about food security of its people
China can also experiment with the vertical farming if need be.
If you are interested in Asia, international trade, agricultural, rapid urbanization, and national security, this would be an interesting news report. Food is vital to the security of any nation.
Revolution comes after hunger
You mean a government should be more concerned about something else. It is such a dumb question. This show most media are funded by the west. This has been number one concern for China for thousand of years. Somehow SCMP wants to make this something to do with political power. It is much better than looking for colonies or developing countries to take their resources to support the luxury lifestyle of the rich and powerful west. China also improved the literacy rate and eliminate absolute poverty.
why is this a question? i thought the idea of food security is top priority is a common sense.
There will never be a shortage of food. There are 8 billion humans around.
The video failed to mentioned that the Chinese government has hectares and hectares of farm land rented out from the Russian Federation purely for the sake for farming crops. This can only increase as Sino-Russia relationship continues to improve. Not to mention that the CPC owns hectares of farmland in USA, Canada and Australia as well.

That hasn't been my experience. Many Chinese ex-pats have fled China because of political oppression, religious oppression, lack of economy opportunity, and general disagreement with how the Chinese state was run.
