I would have like to see a couple of those outdoor shots in full auto mode. Sometimes during run-and-gun situations it’s the best option. Most interesting is that Sony truly modernized by paying attention to live-streaming. I hope it works in remote environments with where there’s no WiFi and the only option is an iPhone.
It's taken a long time for Sony to catch up to the Panasonic HC-X2000. I was hanging out for a 50/60FPS 4K camcorder from Sony for years but ended up buying the Panasonic because it was the only real choice. I'm seriously considering shifting back to Sony with this new camera.

@@Peterthethinker Yeah the 4-hour battery life is fantastic, as is the light weight. Biggest disappointment for me has been the way that sometimes it doesn't actually respond to the record button when recording so you think you've stopped and it's still going. I've ended up with many hours of footage of my leg and shoe when in a run-and-gun situation because there's no audio cue from the camera to let you know that the button-press has been acknowledged. I had to X2000s and they *both* did it. So frustrating. Apart from that they are brilliant, low-light limitations of the small sensor notwithstanding.
Great video! Really enjoyed you speaking about the camera in an introductory presentation. My question is if you shoot wedding in event work? How good is the camera indoors? I guess I really mean how is the low light noise capability any better than the Z150?.
Been waiting for a camcorder to come out with 4k 120 and I am excited that it’s Sony. I am heavily invested into Sony mirrorless and the autofocus is amazing. So knowing that will be in this camcorder and their variable ND I can’t wait for this to come out.
@@T1Media.ireland on Sony's website it Says " The Z200's powerful 1.0 type Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor delivers images with high sensitivity and low noise, at up to 120fps in 4k,240fps in FHD". So I take that as it goes up to 4k 120.
It’ll be interesting to see how this one gets adopted by the skate industry. I agree with you that this seems like an ideal replacement for the aging HVX200 guys but many have already made the switch to the fx6 and I’m not sure you’re going to the zv200 from there
@@henryviz and the fx6 hits a particular use case scenario. You can use it for paid work AND skating. The main I see people not wanting to do that is if it gets damaged, a z200 is cheaper to replace.
@@davidmorefield true! It always you to work with brands just past “here’s a skate clip” better product shots, b-roll and just overall use. Finally. I been putting off getting Z190s for years as felt like an update must be near. I need to check up on some specs but I now either need to come up with another excuse to not spend money or invest in a few of these. Thanks for the great video again.
I don't like that the battery sticks out so far from the back. I really like the integrated sunshade. Do you know if the SRT streaming works also in HEVC? Up to what bitrate?
Specs say SRT does support HEVC but I can't find mention of bitrates. SRT is also only up to 1080p where as RTMP(S) will do 4K - which is really odd as the video stream is the same and SRT shouldn't have a lot more processing overhead than RTMP.
@@SportFlow Just found a manual. At 50/60p : 4K is 38Mbps, HD is selectable from 4.5-27. At 25/30p : 4K 13-38Mbps, HD 3-18. SRT supports adaptive rate control.
Would a BP-u70 stick out too much? I'm getting this camera with 2 BP-U35 batteries for now but I would like a bigger capacity one...Sony or eqivalent (Are the Shape batteries the best next thing to Sony genuine batts?)...
Excellent review, I have a HXR NX80 and just looking to improve, I would like to know if PXW Z200 is more sensitive in low light than PXW Z90, and if the USB port serves to send video signal as well as CANON XF605 not to use a video capture with HDMI, greetings from Lima Peru.
Looks good! Not sure why they didn't include the variable ND filter on some of their recent cameras. But, one of the reasons I keep using my old FX5 is the I got so used to variable ND, a camera seems incomplete without today. Bet the night mode with 4K attracts a lot of UFO hunter types.
It would be great to see a comparison between Sony's new camcorders and Panasonic HC-X2 and X20. Especially how they perform against each other in low light. Thanks!
What is interesting is that the super old DVX200, to my knowledge, is the only fixed-lens camcorder with that larger 4/3" sensor. I own three of them and they still perform very well. The lens is also very sharp (Deicomar).
@@asafblasbergvideographer Yes, as far as I also know, the DVX200 with its 4/3" sensor is the exception in the world of camcorders. It would be a great thing for Panasonic to release a new model with the updated sensor from the GH7, but I haven't heart any news about it. But what we've got now are these two new camcorders from Sony (Z200 and NX800), the slightly older ones from Panasonic (X20 and X20 released in 2022) and the Canon XF605 (released in 2021). All of them have a 1 inch sensor and compete for the same market of users so a comparison would be great.
The z200 comes with the new gen color science of the FX line. The z280 is the FS7 color science. With a straight out of camera baked in profile they won’t match.
Wondering how's the low light?Been using Z190 and it is terrible in regard. I am Event industry. there is no review on this camera for low light situation. Mostly are Bright Day light.
same here friend. I have a couple of XF30s with sigma lenses etc but for events then I need a good camcorder and my C100 mk2 is not the best tool and my old Canon XF300 is HD only- good machine 10 years ago! So I;m getting a Z200 asap and will test it. I know it won't be as good in low light as my FX30 (and for sure the FX3 can see in the dark but why? put some lights on!) but I think it will be better than the previous 1" sensor cameras. I will test it soon and share a video.
This one is a bit of a bust for me. It's a frankencamera. Doesn't really seem finished. Not sure how I feel about it. I am now more interested in an update to the Z90V and the Z280 over the Z190 offering/price slot. Footage looks really noisy, even compared to my XF605 which certainly has some noise that is hard to forgive sometimes. Ergonomically, they dropped the ball by not giving it the FX6 rotating side grip. The XF605 didn't get the rotating side grip of the XF205, but they compensated for that by giving it a nice little finger grip area on the side grip. It's actually really cozy to hand hold there with the right hand, and work the lens with the left hand. This one is a pass for me, but I'll look out for the Z90V and Z280 updates, which hopefully are home runs. Now if only we could get that FX9II....
Today I still like the XF605 better. This camera is a little goofy ergonomically. I'd have to see more footage to give a better opinion, but right now what I've seen is pretty noisy, and there's no way I would give up my XF605 in favor of this, just for the S-Cinetone. Eagerly waiting to see a Z90V and Z280 update now! A Z90V update would solve an ergonomics issue, and I'd be okay with the noise at that price, and Z280 update would (you would hope) solve both the noise and ergonomics problem. .
@@billmakesmovies I think that's more from IR noise than anything else - you can see the classic magenta/red tint to black clothing. I'm curious to see what this would look like with a filter stack on the lens that mitigates IR and UV.
@@spdcrzy Can only hope I suppose. That's some really noisy noise to me. I remember researching the XF605 and people online talking about the noise, when I finally got one I never saw anything outside of what I would expect out of any camera.
yeah...I decided to skip the XF605- I have 2 old XF300 HD only-I rented the XF605 and the quality of the footage in 4k was ok but not incredible over the HD...so I waited...and I'm getting a Sony Z200 today and will use mostly S-Cinetone to match my FX30s.If you want to see what a professional can do with this camera then watch Doug Jensen's videos on youtube. Fantastic camera-I don't make films and for live events, concerts etc where there is some light (I don't shoot in caves) this camera should be good but mostly I need a 20x zoom and all the connections etc in one package. Don't want to create a frankenstein rig. Silly! but I'm old school..yeah yeah...a dad cam...nope!
Is this the same 1' sensor that is in my ax700, the 10 bit is a welcome item but need to see low light and dynamic range compared to my ax700 before i drop 3200$ us on the 800, don't need SDI HDMI is fine for me.
Thanks for the video. It would be great to see the camera operating at an event, expo or church service. I must admit that after the wait this camera is a bit of a disappointment, it needed a faster lens and sensor combination. Sadly, I suspect that my 10 year old x160's (which include the seldom used variable ND) will outshoot the z200 (HD).
Hooray for the camcorder! I shoot long events like dance recitals and pageants... so I love a camcorder for its long record times without overheating and long zoom ranges. Plus the ability to use a LANC zoom controller is a must for me. I'm glad the camcorder is still a thing! My current camcorder is a Canon XA65 but hopefully this Sony will be around for a while. Maybe it'll be discounted in a few years! 😎
yep..same here....I can shoot a dance recital with 3 mirrorless sure but with a lot more care! a camcorder like this would be perfect for me-also live events and dance recitals etc that have decent lighting...I don't shoot in a cave so I'm sure with some tweaking the videos will look great. Getting mine this week
For me, the fixed zoom lens needs to be brighter, wider, and less telephoto. I also hope that they make a smaller version of it under 2lbs. If not, they need to update RX10, RX100, ZV1 asap.
Highlights would have been much better in S-Cinetone. S-Log was useable, but noisy. The ND would be strong enough on most days here in the UK. This day was exceptionally sunny and bright.
Please don’t. Don’t you think the new lens on the Z280 has poor image quality? The chromatic aberration in highlights and the lack of sharpness are a nightmare. It ruined two of my outdoor events…
After a long wait will Sony make a camera with a 1" sensor? They're kidding. I'm still waiting for some solid successor to the EX1R with at least 3 1/2" sensors or better yet even bigger. One inch sensor is a mockery to users.
Massive zoom is great but i'd far rather have a larger sensor than one inch, I'd buy an APSc camcorder tomorrow from Sony. Sad Sony hasn't released a modern version of the VG30. Shame too people are obsessed with "log" I see it as failed concept that should be replaced with a better system that gives high dynamic range by default without this high base iso nonsense. When sensors get ultra fast readout, on the fly encoding of multiple instantly captured images per frame with different under, over and average exposures should be able to be combined to yield better dynamic range without the washed out look i.e. it needs grading and the high iso etc workarounds.
I think it's kinda weird looking. I'll probably stick with my XF605 until they come out with a replacement to the Z90V, which is what I really want in a camcorder sized camera. Am glad they added back the infrared to this price point, but the body on this one is kind of a flop for me. It's like a weird Frankencamera. Hopefully they make the Z90V and Z280 replacement a bit less weird looking.
canons last good. 4K was the Lmited. XF400 . BUT the itty bitty batts suck . 90 min at best. shame the dont use the XF205 formfactor for a. mid grade 4K camcorder. it took the larger series batts. massive run time. and had enough space to have plenty of I/O I also. still love on paper the Z190. massive zoom. Mech lens mode! and while it is smaller 1/3 chips its not a single. so its good enough and ya get VERY deep DoF that is super forgiving to not being on point. I hate the 1 inch trend as it gets too close to cine cams . s
@@PeterthethinkerI still rock an XF100! XF400 missed the beat for me. Trying to marry the XF100 with the XA series was an annoying thing Canon did. I missed out on the XF205. I am told the XF605 is the same size, but I think it is bigger. Reason I like the XF100 over the current XA75 is that there are manual buttons on the older XF100 that the newer XA cameras don’t have. I have an FX6 and FX3, so I’m already over at Sony, but they didn’t have a camcorder like I also needed. Have seen footage cut together XF605 with FX6, so for now it will do. For camcorder stuff I got the XF100 the year it came out in 2011 I think? That camera made me a ton of money! Made the mistake of selling it in 2017. Found one new in box (probably the last one) a few months ago, and am happy to have it to grab and go with for a fishing channel I make with a friend. Got to play with RED and Canon C300 and FS7 in the 2014-2017 time frame. Took a bit of a hiatus and relied on a 70D and a G21 camcorder for the little work I did do up until 2022 when I decided to jump back into it. Moved away from Canon to Sony with the FX6 and FX3. Those cameras are amazing, and really perfect for my needs. I was missing having a camcorder though, something about an all in one purpose built video camera is just so good, and so I bought the XF605 in March. That thing puts out a wonderful image for what it is! Super fun to run around with. Still, it’s kinda big. So I found that XF100 and have it for when it’s acceptable to use it, but it is a bit dated. The alternative was the Z90V, but it’s kinda old for a 4K camera, and it is lacking the S-Cinetone profile I want to match with my other cameras. This Z200 would actually be perfect for me, but it is a bit big, and yeah, goofy looking! Hopeful they release a Z90V update next, but don’t really want them to mess with the physical design like they did here. Modernize it a bit, but not too much. I honestly wouldn’t mind if they rereleased the VX2100/PD170 form factor again. So easy to toss in a backpack this Z200 and my XF605 are just a little too big. Cool find on the second hand nasa gear.
I just am dissapointed, if theyre gonna stay with the one inch sensor size, we need an f1.8 or 2.8 lens. The 18-110 pz lens exists, you can build a camera around that lens with a s35 or 4/3 sensor. I put a b4 lens on my gh5s now, my z90 was just too dark in alot of situations. Especially high speed filming which was impossible outside of direct light. :(
I don't agree that the sensor on fixed lens camcorders should get bigger than 1". I think it's the sweetspot between image quality / depth of field, and convenience / zoom range.
Not all 1-inch sensors are so dark. From my experience, using the SONY 70 and 90, they are indeed quite dark. However, the Panasonic HC-X2, which also uses a 1-inch sensor, is very bright. I hope the Z200’s 1-inch sensor will be better than its predecessors. At least it offers you 4K60p
It would be pretty niche for the person who needs a fixed lens camcorder to also need DCI. Make no mistake about it, no one “wants” a fixed lens camcorder, but more people “need” one than care to admit.
@@luma_productions Yeah but it's not something that is hard to do, isn't it? I'm sure they could add it with software update if they wanted to, the sensor has enough pixels. There are some camcorders which have that.

How does the Z200 compare to the Sony PXW-Z280. Is the Z280 still a better camera?
I would have like to see a couple of those outdoor shots in full auto mode. Sometimes during run-and-gun situations it’s the best option. Most interesting is that Sony truly modernized by paying attention to live-streaming. I hope it works in remote environments with where there’s no WiFi and the only option is an iPhone.
Nice Thank You, and Sony
Love a Sony camcorder for content production on You Tube, always used Sony models. This is tempting as a main camera for the channel.

Wow I wanna buy one
Interesting that the lens doesn’t include an iris ring like previous models. I wonder if this is this going to hard to get used to when operating?
The ring will be updated to work via firmware. Regardless, variable ND makes fiddling with the iris ring unnecessary.
A firmware in 2025 will let us assign one ring to IRIS- I can wait til then. I don't use variable ND indoors...so i need IRIS.
@@erickperdomo277 with the ramping you won’t be using iris indoors either. You’ll be riding the gain.
Very informative - thanks! If I’m not doing broadcast, is there a reason to spend the extra money on the Z200 vs the NX800 for documentary work?

Do the Sony hotshoe mics work with this new camcorder? I love using them on my other Sony cameras equipped with MI shoe.
Yes
Great video! Really enjoyed you speaking about the camera in an introductory presentation. My question is if you shoot wedding in event work? How good is the camera indoors? I guess I really mean how is the low light noise capability any better than the Z150?.
Thank you Carl for this presentation. What bit rate does this Z200 records at ?
Been waiting for a camcorder to come out with 4k 120 and I am excited that it’s Sony. I am heavily invested into Sony mirrorless and the autofocus is amazing. So knowing that will be in this camcorder and their variable ND I can’t wait for this to come out.
It's 4K 60 not 120?
@@T1Media.ireland on Sony's website it Says " The Z200's powerful 1.0 type Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor delivers images with high sensitivity and low noise, at up to 120fps in 4k,240fps in FHD". So I take that as it goes up to 4k 120.
Now... This with a .3x fisheye and shooting skate in 4:3
Now we're talking
It’ll be interesting to see how this one gets adopted by the skate industry. I agree with you that this seems like an ideal replacement for the aging HVX200 guys but many have already made the switch to the fx6 and I’m not sure you’re going to the zv200 from there
@@henryviz and the fx6 hits a particular use case scenario. You can use it for paid work AND skating. The main I see people not wanting to do that is if it gets damaged, a z200 is cheaper to replace.

These will be the camera you have been waiting for. I far prefer the Z200 to the Z190.
Wonderful review ! What ZMU We can use with It ?
I don't like that the battery sticks out so far from the back. I really like the integrated sunshade. Do you know if the SRT streaming works also in HEVC? Up to what bitrate?
Specs say SRT does support HEVC but I can't find mention of bitrates. SRT is also only up to 1080p where as RTMP(S) will do 4K - which is really odd as the video stream is the same and SRT shouldn't have a lot more processing overhead than RTMP.
@@HillClimbTV interesting, thanks!

Would a BP-u70 stick out too much? I'm getting this camera with 2 BP-U35 batteries for now but I would like a bigger capacity one...Sony or eqivalent (Are the Shape batteries the best next thing to Sony genuine batts?)...
Thanks for the review. Does the camera record and output interlaced video 50i/60i?
Actually pretty good camcorder overall.
I hope Sony adds vehicle AF, I shoot Aircraft, and the Panny I currently sucks in low contrast. I have my eye on this Camcorder!
What is the story with genlock (not timecode) on this camera?
Still waiting for z280 successor. Does z200 color match z280?
doubt it... no cameras 100% match unless its a same model (and even those differ sometimes)
It should be pretty close, but you're comparing 3-CMOS 1/2" sensors to 1 1" CMOS sensor
The z200 comes with the new gen color science of the FX line. The z280 is the FS7 color science. With a straight out of camera baked in profile they won’t match.
Sony claims it will match well with fx6... but with z280? doubt it.
Wondering how's the low light?Been using Z190 and it is terrible in regard. I am Event industry. there is no review on this camera for low light situation. Mostly are Bright Day light.
This will be better than the Z190 was. However not as good as sony's mirrorless or cinema line products.
same here friend.
Does it off a 1080i output in 50p like the FX6? this would be a great news ENG camera but some outlets still want 50i
Yes it does. The manual is already online and it has the same exact output settings the FX6 does.
Is there Date and Time stamp functionality for those in the Legal Videography fields?

Finally, a proper Sony alternative to the Canon XF605.
Ive seen a few reviews of this camera and not a single one mentions low light situations… seems a bit suspicious 🤔
Exactly the kind of work these cameras are great for.

For me, the fixed zoom lens needs to be brighter, wider, and less telephoto. I also hope that they make a smaller version of it under 2lbs. If not, they need to update RX10, RX100, ZV1 asap.
An rx10 mk5 with 4k120p, variable nd and 10bit codecs and the mi shoe would be an amazing product.
If this is a Sony ZED200, is it the Canon CED300?
A new CAMCORDER? I never thought we’d see the day. Shame about the highlights / inability to use S-Log in the sunshine 🙄
Highlights would have been much better in S-Cinetone.
S-Log was useable, but noisy. The ND would be strong enough on most days here in the UK. This day was exceptionally sunny and bright.
I just wish they'd kept the Fujinon lens from the Z280. Or at least some variant of it.
Please don’t. Don’t you think the new lens on the Z280 has poor image quality? The chromatic aberration in highlights and the lack of sharpness are a nightmare. It ruined two of my outdoor events…
It doesn’t fit on the larger 1“ sensor
can i know your shot gun mic?

No AF for birds, cars? What a bummer!
Yes that was a dissapointment to see. Perhaps it will be added later
Video cameras have never had problems with autofocus on birds or cars, this is not a photo camera where autofocus is a problem.

Any idea what the two screw holes are on the body by the HDMI port? SIM card/modem adaptor mount? Any published accessories for this yet?
I think it's kinda weird looking. I'll probably stick with my XF605 until they come out with a replacement to the Z90V, which is what I really want in a camcorder sized camera. Am glad they added back the infrared to this price point, but the body on this one is kind of a flop for me. It's like a weird Frankencamera. Hopefully they make the Z90V and Z280 replacement a bit less weird looking.

@@PeterthethinkerI still rock an XF100! XF400 missed the beat for me. Trying to marry the XF100 with the XA series was an annoying thing Canon did. I missed out on the XF205. @@Peterthethinkermy first camera was a Sony VX2100, came up with FCP 8! Then the DVX100B. A buddy had GL2 and XL2. Shot our first “feature” length movie on the XL2. Then HD came and I got the Canon HV40 HDV camcorder, which was actually a really special little camera. Another friend had XHA1, shot a long short on that with the Letus adapter! 5DII hit the market, and it was a 60D that became my short film camera.

I wish there was something like this with a lumix gh7 sensor in it. I wont buy a camera whith a phone sized sensor.
@@carlyates2487 the sweet spot is 2/3" but I agree that 1" is pretty close
Not all 1-inch sensors are so dark. From my experience, using the SONY 70 and 90, they are indeed quite dark. However, the Panasonic HC-X2, which also uses a 1-inch sensor, is very bright.
I hope the Z200’s 1-inch sensor will be better than its predecessors. At least it offers you 4K60p
I have my FX6 with the PZ 28-135 mm for these situations. If I want a smaller setup, then these 1“ camcorders are quite handy.
I am hoping this is a stepping stone to that exact type of camera. Having s35 and f2.8 would be an amazing camcorder.
Shame it doesn't have 4k DCI
It would be pretty niche for the person who needs a fixed lens camcorder to also need DCI. Make no mistake about it, no one “wants” a fixed lens camcorder, but more people “need” one than care to admit.
