Sony had the fs5 and fs7 that were s35 and you were not getting that type of focal length/aperture on anything you could handhold. I mean, just look at the 28-135 f4 pz lens you have on the fx6, its nearly half the size of the Sony camcorder that reaches out to 480mm. 20x servo zooms that are quality are not something you can easily buy or easily manage on a s35 camcorder, especially trying to run around and frame shots handheld at the end of the zoom. in 2005, you could film just about anything with anything these days. The Z200 looks pretty good on it's own, most everyone watching this has another camera that shoots bokeh. Z200 fills all the gaps my Alpha doesn't.
Well my nx800 will be here Monday. I don’t have kids, but I will be at the races recording shots that nobody’s cameras can reach with my dad cam. And they will not say wish it was a s35 or full frame video😂. They will be happy with the results
This rarely, if ever, gets mentioned when the topic of camcorders come up, but a 1 inch sensor is equivalent to S16 and the same sized sensor in the OG Pocket/Micro cameras. If you look at it like that, with the added bells and whistles from the the FX6, this camcorder is basically a cinecorder... and that's pretty elfin cool. I've had the opportunity to use a Canon XA50 for the past couple of months and it's been the most fun I've had with a camera since I installed ML Raw onto my 5D3.
EVF= Dad cam style? How professional camera operators over the past 10 years allowed manufacturers to eliminate EVFs from cameras (especially cinema line of cameras) is crazy.
That comment triggered me so much lol. I absolutely hate how we've accepted knocking the evf off and having to deal with expensive add on evfs. Give me a good evf over a clunky monitor/cage anyday.
Struggled with this yesterday filming a wedding in Italy, constantly found myself wanting to pick up the A7S III instead of the FX3 just because of the vf
My contact lens prescription as well as aging eyes that can't backfocus anymore, make seeing the flippy monitor almost impossible for focusing, and I LOVE the new Sony MP+++ OLED little EVFs of late.
I am a hobbyist and have a Sony FDR-AX700, which is a 1" sensor, 4k-30, 12x optical / 18x clear image... my dji Pocket3 with 1" sensor does a bit better in low light night shots, but I get fine results with the AX700 and post denoising with better detail. I would LOVE to have the NX800 with the 4K-120fps and the 30x clear image for what I am doing, but wonder if they will create a "AX700" type version prosumer type version of this camera - my AX700 is a prosumer version of the Sony PXW-Z90 and Sony HXR-NX80... I paid $1895 for the AX700 while the Z90 still sells at $2799 @ B&H...and the NX80 was $2298.... if they came out with a "AX800" for around $2500-$2800 I would jump on that right now!!
I'm so on the fence about getting one of these. What color profile did you shoot your test footage in. I'm film a wide variety of stuff from RedBull kind of action stuff to Corporate Video to Event Video and Social Content thats for RUclips and vertical. So yea I'm asking alot but this is so tempting to get versus an FX6. Interested in seeing more interviews and short films that use this camera in well produced videos and run and gun style productions.
It's really depressing to see a whole group of video/creative "influencers" not grasp the concept of sensor size and lens physics. Of course everyone wants a full frame senor, but there's a reason a 24-480mm f/2.8 lens doesn't exist for your FX6. It would cost as much as a Ferrari and be the size of a refrigerator. The entire reason these camcorders have "balanced" size sensors is to be able to get you that massive reach in a package that can fit in a backpack. For the types of work these kinds of cameras are used for, the functionality and flexibility beats a cinema camera any day.
What type of work? No commercial work will hire you with this camera. No weddings will.Maybe news gathering...but other than ambulance chasing, don't the locals have their own cameras?
Camcorders have always been better overall. Its just that yawll got sucked into the DSLR/Mirrorless trend. I've shot on the Sony HVRs and Canon XA10 for years, all while everyone was buying photo cameras for video for some reason. I was always confused. No NDs, No proper Audio, No video-centric button layout, No Servo Zoom for smooth zooms etc.... The small sensors never bothered me at all because I never jumped on the full frame wagon either. HOWEVER....lol I do wish these latest offerings were super35 I must admit!
First off, great video. The Sony Kando trip looks like great fun. Secondly, the $3,200 price tag is very enticing. I’ll have to seriously consider buying this camera. Obviously, the limited DoF is a bummer. And maybe this isn’t the camera to get if you’re a wide angle lens enthusiast, but the only other downside seems to be the small-ish 1” sensor. However, maybe a denoise plugin can clean up any low light footage enough so that the footage you record can be used on paid gigs. Anyways, I’ve subbed and I’ll checkout this camera on B&H’s site.
My favorite feature is the DIRECT TO RUclips LIVE-STREAMING with Ethernet or WiFi. This feature is on just the A7iv and a ZV camera, this feature allows you to get your voice direct to the internet without needing any computer to process the footage or any hard drives to manage the data, just shoot and stream, an incredible feature for an ENG reporter who’s in the field. The 20x optical is super impressive and if it’s dark you have Sony’s trusty clever “NightShot” which allows you to captures images in total darkness. It looks really compact, I maybe wish the top handle could be detached, but I agree with your last review friend who thought it to be compelling, I agree.
I already own an FX6 but considering picking up a Z200 because it would be a better tool for at least half of my work. Big sensor camera can arguably give you nicer images. But a fixed lens camcorder is arguably an easier tool to tell a story on the shoot day, and provide better footage for your editor to work with.
WHEN I HEARD THE LAST WORDS: THIS CAMERA IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN HIM AND HIS LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM: THIS CAMCORDER IS FOR "THOSE WHO RECORD IN CHURCHES, SPORTS.... BASICALLY HE SAID: IF YOU WANT TO RECORD (NOT FILM) PROFESSIONAL VIDEO THERE YOU HAVE A PHOTO CAMERA THAT GIVES YOU THAT OPTION, THAT'S WHY MANY RUclipsRS BUY PHOTOGRAPHIC CAMERAS AND LOOK LIKE MONSTERS WITH 20 THOUSAND THINGS ON TOP OF THEM AND WHEN THEY WORK BEST THEY PUT THEM IN GIMBALLS, ARGUING THAT CAMERAS GIVE BETTER DEPTH OF FIELD, OF COURSE ACCORDING TO THE LENS IT IS OBVIOUS THAT IF YOU BUY A SIMPLE CAMCORDER THEN NO, BUT GREAT RECORDINGS AND TRANSMISSIONS ARE MADE WITH CAMCORDER NOT WITH CAMERAS...THE LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM HAS BEEN EXTENDED FOR THIS KIND OF PEOPLE..
Had mine delivered two days ago and getting used of the operations and menus etc. I shoot weddings for 25+ years and have been using a X200 and am very happy with that, this camera, so far, the NX800 (don't need SDI) is looking good, I was a bit concerned that the lens stops down to 4.5 in low light at full zoom, but I need not have concerned myself because the 30db of gain that is required at that aperture does not introduce any noise atall, would I have been prepared to pay another 1K for a constant f2.8, like on my x200 and ZV1, I would say I would, but I'm not sure if it is necessary because of how low the noise is with the (sometimes) f4.5 lens on the NX800. However, there are a couple of nice touches that are on the ZV1 that are not on this 1" sensor camera and one is the "face recognition auto exposure" and also A real biggie, no "Exposure Lock" in auto exposure, this is a real biggie and a great help on the ZV1, I call it semi auto exposure. I would say that at this price point, this camera will be bought by a lot of the "Auto everything" guys, if you are listening Sony, include "AE Lock" when you update the firmware to make the backlight work (you assign this to a shortcut button) but I can't make it work, but so far it is , from what I see, a super camera and I think I will be filming my next few hundred weddings on it.
Great Video! Love to get a test with a LiveU unit (yes, us broadcasting folks in streaming:-) , pair with Solo Pro or bigger units since it has a SDI for events. I could see the value for lightweight production setups. I also agree it could serve well for churches . I would like to find out if it has support for NDI / other options.
For journalism/documentary work this could be really appealing. It's also one step closer to the unicorn FX3 with internal ND(aka FX-take-our-money-Sony).
One of the biggest advantage of camcorder is the ergonomics. However, these EVF on the back negate this. I don't understand why the EVF is not up where the LCD is so you can rest the camera on your shoulder the way pro camcorders were built for so long. Way too much emphasis from Sony on LCD's and way too many cameras and camcorders with a poorly placed or complete lack of EVF's.
I love the form factor of these ENG cameras but the small sensor size and slow aperture does not make it an FX6, not by a long shot. As an event shooter, I've had to put the ENG away in favor of a DSLR with a fast prime because the light can be so crappy at events making the b-roll look terrible. Interviews ok obviously because I can light those but that's it. As some others said in the video, make it a super 35, put a better lens on it and watch it fly off the shelves. Until then, I'll stick with either a cinema cam or a DSLR.
Camcorders for basic videography work are generally just a more reliable & faster tool, they just work. Record unlimited, don't overheat, large battery packs last for your entire shoot, lenses are parfocal etc The full frame gear is sexier because you can potentially do all the arty wannabe filmaker stuff, like film someone caressing over wheat in a field with uber shallow depth of field and apply a arty lut to the log/raw footage... which is great but it's mostly B-roll stuff and not the actual core stuff you get paid for. For the actual stuff most people can get work for the full frame gear is just more arkward to work with my ZV-E1 needs to be rigged out with a external battery + fan just to be able to do long form recording.
Everyone is saying this is their favorite, until Sony releases their camera that actually replaces the FX6. I can feel how hungry we are all for new Sony cameras, and this is definitely one of the more exciting releases of the year from Sony.
@@kylemeshna I definitely think the late sony firmware says we wont get an FX3/4 update this year, but I have guessed there would be an FX6 successor or a super 35 FX6 addition that more closely competes with Komodo and C70 stuff at a lower price than the FX6. This is all completely made up in my head, but it would be cool!
Really exciting camera, but man the 1" inch sensor kills it for me because of the low light performance. But this would be fantastic for outdoors run and gun shoots or day time/well lit event filming.
Great review. With the 1 inch sensor, why no low-light tests? I guess its good for highschool sports videography. I think in year these will be $2500-3k. Edit: the model on B&H does not list SLOG
(SONY FX6) - (S35) + (some cool but not awsome features) + (insane zoom) - (bokeh) + (Good Price) = SONY Z200 NGL even if you want that FF or S35 this suits you. and I have to mention that this is THE BEST for starters.
I photograph a lot of all day conferences and the video guys often use cameras like this. No over heating and good enough quality to live stream the speaker onto the large screens
I might consider trading in my RX10 IV for something like that but I personally like the look of the RX10 IV; it has the older color science, which isn't as good but has a look to it.
Why is low light always an issue?! All this great tech and we still have this issue. I guess it is one of the camera/film industries greatest pawns, to keep us spending more money.
how can this be an essentially fx6 when the sensor is completely different'it's essentially a totally different camera aimed for a different audience as well
I love that Panasonic has had this camera for YEARS but because Sony brought all the influences out, it's getting hyped up. Oh and Panasonic's is $1000 less.
@@andersistbesserIt's a nice to have feature but I agree it is something I would rarely use. I think slow-mo, like ultra shallow depth of field, is so over done these days that it just seems like cheap filler a lot of the time.
Panasonic wishes it had face tracking AF on the level of Sony. Their highest level camcorder is 4K, yet only has 3G SDI out, and the ND system is hard stops. The cameras are toys compared to this.
Great review guys! So much better than people sitting in front of a microphone at a desk bigging themselves up at the expense of a new camera they haven’t even touched.
"Only camera with VND and IS apart from the Burano"... ???? The Image Stabilization is in the FIXED lens... It's like putting a 28-135 on the FX6. It has nothing to do with the Burano VND and IS combination on the sensor side.
You can run any footage through ai now and make it look like whatever you want. Camcorders are going to totally make a comeback because they are fun and easy to use
I think this camera is good compared to the old models of the same category from Sony K. But I don't think this camera is excellent compared to other cameras from other companies such as DJI. I don't know why Sony manufactures cameras like this category without caring about quality, as if it produces them without any attraction to its products. If we compare this camera with the new iPhone, there is a difference like the difference between heaven and earth.
Go ahead and cover live sporting events, music concerts, stage performances, new stories, etc with a dji pocket and then tell me your comment isn't delusional.

I hope this camera is successful cus it could be a return to camcorders! Miss those days of compact dad cams with all the bells and whistles.
Well my nx800 will be here Monday. I don’t have kids, but I will be at the races recording shots that nobody’s cameras can reach with my dad cam. And they will not say wish it was a s35 or full frame video😂. They will be happy with the results
A7IV + NX800 + FX6 + 70-200 F/2.8GM ii + 24-105 F/4 OSS + Prime of your choice = Perfect wedding kit.
Literally just said the camera woudl be awesome for golf creators.
What's the dynamic range ?
If you are in the aviation world, this camera is by far the best option especially if you are an airshow photographer/ videographer
I’m tempted to get it simply for sports videography
the ending part, I'm flattered hahaha! cute lol!
I was really impressed by this camera! If they make a smaller model I'm all in!
Would you choose smaller version with 1 inch sensor or same size but super 35?
@@kylemeshna Smaller and 1” if the lens was the same. If they went S35 the lens would end up being massive or severely limited in range/ Fstop.
@JesseDriftwood yeah fair point. I’d be stoked with something like a 24-135 S35
Yes, I wish this was the size of the Canon XF605, or even the XF405.
@@aldolegaI am pretty sure this is a tad smaller than the xf605 and weighs a bit less.
Anyways, I’ve subbed and I’ll checkout this camera on B&H’s site.
do this camcorder has 2 iris control? one on the lens also?
Ok ok ok!!! I’m sold! It’s like stacking one brick after another on a rickety cart (my loyalty to canon) and it just imploded. I need this camera!
Again, S35 and I’ll buy it immediately.
Big agree
2
A 24-480mm equivalent lens for s35 would be absolutely massive and expensive.
Agreed
No you wouldn't because it would be too large and unwieldy. Even the m43 dvx200 that has a shorter focal length is much larger.
It's geared towards being an Event camera
End made me laugh hysterically.
Glad at least one person appreciated that 😂
Cameras like this are so much fun. I'm an FX6 owner but i still have fond memories of the Sony Z1P and Panasonic DVX100.
It's the ideal event/ wedding camera.
BASICALLY HE SAID: IF YOU WANT TO RECORD (NOT FILM) PROFESSIONAL VIDEO THERE YOU HAVE A PHOTO CAMERA THAT GIVES YOU THAT OPTION, THAT'S WHY MANY RUclipsRS BUY PHOTOGRAPHIC CAMERAS AND LOOK LIKE MONSTERS WITH 20 THOUSAND THINGS ON TOP OF THEM AND WHEN THEY WORK BEST THEY PUT THEM IN GIMBALLS, ARGUING THAT CAMERAS GIVE BETTER DEPTH OF FIELD, OF COURSE ACCORDING TO THE LENS IT IS OBVIOUS THAT IF YOU BUY A SIMPLE CAMCORDER THEN NO, BUT GREAT RECORDINGS AND TRANSMISSIONS ARE MADE WITH CAMCORDER NOT WITH CAMERAS...THE LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM HAS BEEN EXTENDED FOR THIS KIND OF PEOPLE..
looks good. these types of cameras can be used for fiction features.
New title: RUclips Filmmakers Discover Camcorders in 2024!
Could you share some low light footage with lots of gain? I have a Z280 and it is great in low light. The f4.5 is concerning
My only thought and comment is I NEED this camera!!!
Good things are coming back, the Z200 & NX800 are shaking dime jars

Great Video! Love to get a test with a LiveU unit (yes, us broadcasting folks in streaming:-) , pair with Solo Pro or bigger units since it has a SDI for events. I could see the value for lightweight production setups. I also agree it could serve well for churches . I would like to find out if it has support for NDI / other options.
I definitely agree that this is a camera I’d like to use in a church setting. Finally I’ve found the perfect camera!!!🎉
I think this is telling us what provably what the next FX6 marc 2 is gonna be..... BEAST
Portable Modern Digital S16mm camcorder with log ? Gotta be the B cam for my next doc !!!!
Surprising how many people do not see it this way.
Why is it so big for only a 1 inch sensor?
Record unlimited, don't overheat, large battery packs last for your entire shoot, lenses are parfocal etc
The full frame gear is sexier because you can potentially do all the arty wannabe filmaker stuff, like film someone caressing over wheat in a field with uber shallow depth of field and apply a arty lut to the log/raw footage... which is great but it's mostly B-roll stuff and not the actual core stuff you get paid for. For the actual stuff most people can get work for the full frame gear is just more arkward to work with my ZV-E1 needs to be rigged out with a external battery + fan just to be able to do long form recording.
E.N.G. boys ! you are late at the party .....but welkom sins the 90's
Gerald wasn't amused lol
It's a camcorder...they have been around for decades...Panasonic stabilisation for the win...
This looks so fun
It’s over $5K in Canada.
Venue is Ritz Carlton Bacara Santa Barbara. :)
Everyone is saying this is their favorite, until Sony releases their camera that actually replaces the FX6. I can feel how hungry we are all for new Sony cameras, and this is definitely one of the more exciting releases of the year from Sony.
Hoping we’ll get another FX camera this year
@@kylemeshna I definitely think the late sony firmware says we wont get an FX3/4 update this year, but I have guessed there would be an FX6 successor or a super 35 FX6 addition that more closely competes with Komodo and C70 stuff at a lower price than the FX6. This is all completely made up in my head, but it would be cool!
Rumor sites suggesting maybe an fx9 update could be the next thing coming. Which will probably be great, but likely too much for most of us 😅
Is the hood removable and what is the filter size
Yes it’s removable. And 72mm front thread
Then this would make it possibly the best camcorder for filming skateboarding currently on the market
God knows I need this camera. At least 2 or 3 of them
Really exciting camera, but man the 1" inch sensor kills it for me because of the low light performance.
Confirmed, it does have Slog3.
No iris control on the lens? Who designs this stuff?
There’s iris wheel right next to the lens (same style as ND wheel) and then the control wheels on the lens will be programmable
1.23x is not "basically no crop"
So I might just put one of these on a DJI gimbal and just make it my PTZ camera
(SONY FX6) - (S35) + (some cool but not awsome features) + (insane zoom) - (bokeh) + (Good Price) = SONY Z200
NGL even if you want that FF or S35 this suits you.
and I have to mention that this is THE BEST for starters.
It’s a Sony 😅! Good option for news gathering, interviews and fast paced events.
Take my money 💰🤑
Por fin!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉 me gusta 😊
I photograph a lot of all day conferences and the video guys often use cameras like this. No over heating and good enough quality to live stream the speaker onto the large screens
I might consider trading in my RX10 IV for something like that but I personally like the look of the RX10 IV; it has the older color science, which isn't as good but has a look to it.
Why is low light always an issue?! All this great tech and we still have this issue. I guess it is one of the camera/film industries greatest pawns, to keep us spending more money.
how can this be an essentially fx6 when the sensor is completely different'it's essentially a totally different camera aimed for a different audience as well
It looks like those event attendees know nothing about camcorder.
Where is RX10 Mark 5 Sony??
I would buy it if it had the animal recognition and tracking of some of the mirrorless cameras..
It does
Really? I film Insects and butterflies and seriously suffer from my z190 auto focusing on the branch before it like so many other cameras..
my dad cam wallet is trembling
I think that’s called a Costanza wallet
Wish it would track animals and birds.
Calling it an fx6 great Sony marketing
I love that Panasonic has had this camera for YEARS but because Sony brought all the influences out, it's getting hyped up. Oh and Panasonic's is $1000 less.
The cx350 doesn't have as good of autofocus as the Sony will but the feature set of that camera is solid. Doesn't do 4k120 though.
No one needs 4k 120. I thought i would but now that i have it i never use it@@ledheavy26
‘This is a Ford Fiesta, it’s just like a Porsche but completely different in every way.’
DON'T CONFUSE FILMING WITH RECORDING
So essentially its no where near an fx6
I smashed subscribe on the Gerald Undone cameo lol
lol love it!
But like, why am I not convinced? I find something like the Fuji XH2S more appealing and cheaper.
Because you're not the target audience.
This makes me miss my canon Xha1-s
You can probably get one for cheap these days 😂
@@kylemeshna lmao can’t to back to tapes lol
Sooo, Sony made a Cannon 605/607 lol
Great review guys! So much better than people sitting in front of a microphone at a desk bigging themselves up at the expense of a new camera they haven’t even touched.
I don't understand the fx6 " half the price" comparison since it's a full frame video camera without a lens. It's just absurd.
The Gerald cameo 😂
He’s never gonna say yes to going to lunch with me again
It's not marketed towards you obviously. If you're comparing this to an iPhone then you don't get it.
The image of cameras with this Sensor size is just bad in my eyes.
YOU PUT AN EFFECT THAT FLASHES THAT DOESN'T LET YOU APPRECIATE BETWEEN ONE CAMERA AND ANOTHER I SEE IT TERRIBLE..
FX6 for half the price? bro, you are delusional, its dji pocket for five times the price 😅😅
Go ahead and cover live sporting events, music concerts, stage performances, new stories, etc with a dji pocket and then tell me your comment isn't delusional.
Forgot one small little detail ... DR?
and barely mentioned aperture.
@@CCD-dreamcore Sure, aparature is probably variable. Like it is with most if not all all in one cams. Usable dynamic range, one would think would be the most obvious talking point when dealing with a small sensor camera ... Well, this is not journalism, it's more or less a promo piece.
Jackson Ronald Jackson Eric Martinez Margaret
Again, 2/3 inch sensor and I’ll buy it immediately. Sony doesn't make an affordable 2/3 camera in 4k.
20x isn't a good enough range for you? Clear Image Zoom takes it even farther. I think this is a wonderful sweet spot.
@@daltonrandall4348 20x is great. Would be even better in a smaller sensor tho
Isn't 2/3 smaller than 1 inch?
@@StephenMcFadden yes. Perfect size. 👌
@@StephenMcFadden Yes, being smaller is what enables a lens with a longer focal range. Hence my question. Otherwise, you're just diminishing image quality for no reason.
It is absolutely not a cut-price FX6 😂. It’s a half-baked barely incremental update on their camcorder lineup of five years ago.
