Stigma is a stumbling block for people seeking help with addiction, but so are finances and available resources. I read Matthew Perry’s book (having addiction in my family), and one thing that stood out to me was that Matthew’s wealth enabled his addiction. Money was no object for obtaining alcohol or oxycodone, and having the means to keep his problem out of the public eye for as long as he did. He maintained family and friends because he didn’t have to resort to manipulating them for money. He could afford therapy and rehab. He said he spent millions on therapy. The average drug addict alienates family and friends and ends up on the street where the chance of recovery becomes dismal. This is a sad loss 💔

I'm his age and have been in recovery and sober for 11 years. I feel that addiction contributed to his death. He looked to be in poor condition. I say this with all due respect...I was a fan of his work mostly. One day at a time.

That is very possible. I can’t remember when, but within the last 10 years, Matthew had emergency surgery for a ruptured bowel, because he had not had a bowel movement for 10 days (due to taking 55 OxyContin per day). He had a cardiac arrest at that time, was on life support and had to be placed on an ECMO machine. They didn’t think he would live. He did live but he had 15 surgeries since then to deal with the damage in his bowel. His addiction took a huge toll on his body.

I was raised with a drugged and alcoholic older brother ,he ruined everything thing he touched ,after years of abuse from him and many stints in rehab I had to cut him out of my life.
About three years before he died we re-connected ,he had FINALLY become clean and sober ,what people don’t realize is that you’re never cured ,you’re always one drink or fix away from relapsing,I’m also a retired nurse,so I’ve seen my share of patients going through withdrawals, such a tragic loss for very talented man ,may he rest in peace ,and Elizabeth Vargas knows all to well about alcoholisim I watched her tell her story many years ago .

Bullshit. I have asked for help 100 times...it's not that we don't ask for help...it is that normal people do not take our problem seriously and we end up feeling ignored and our feelings if we say them out loud, eventually family, are shrugged off. I literally just had that happen about an hour ago. It is not that we don't ask for help...it is that sober people or people without addiction, don't take us seriously

I guess Matthew Perry was 24 when “Friends” started, and he died at 54. His serious addiction started during that show. But it basically means that nearly half of his life was a living hell. I read his book and overall it is good although it meanders a bit towards the end. But I guess he was taking more than 50 pain pills a day and it’s actually miraculous he lived as long as he did. Pain medication actually saves lives in some cases but the side effects are pretty bad. I would imagine anything over, oh, 8 to 10 pills per day would drastically shorten a life, and even that number is very high.

What's the oath due no harm. I'm sure MP had connections to get the drugs, any who I am in pain 24 hours a day and doctors here in NJ won't give you anything unless your legs are hanging off, all the drug addicts ruined it for us elderly who do need pain meds. So here I sit everyday in bed because it's to painful to walk and I am only 67. 😢

Because the human brain is still a mystery to us. Why would we trust psychologists when a lot of times they don’t even know why psych meds work. They just try different cocktails of drugs until they find one that kind of works.
You know what would *drastically* improve the mental health of human kind?
Restoring the human family to what nature intended: a matriarchal tribe.
Human beings are tribe animals. Human beings evolved to live in matriarchal tribes, not patriarchal marriages. Our families are structured incorrectly, and it’s the root cause of human dysfunction.

Disagree strongly…the primary reason people don’t ‘get’ help is due to finances. There are limited publicly funded treatment centres with lengthy wait lists. Private facilities are expensive and out of reach of most. People may not ‘seek’ treatment due to denial… but the sigma excuse is outdated. Addicts that are actively and their families and/or loved ones looking for support that doesn’t exist. That is the reality! Perry was blessed to have the means to have attended treatment as many times as he did…RIP!

However, if you need detox, most get it through Obamacare health insurance. There is TONS of help out there. Stigma, not money, is the reason.

If anyone is able to get as much help as they can, this wealthy Hollywood population certainly can. I am sorry he could not bring himself up out of this abyss…

When we stop calling addition a disease and get real and call it what it is, it cannot be solved. You need to get saved in the name of Jesus Christ, and bind the demons and cast them out. Break their curses and then live clean.

It's a tough battle and can be frustrating for everyone. People who work helping those with addictions have a very high burn-out rate. Anyone who has seen it close up can tell you those Mormons with 10 wives and prohibitions on even caffeine are not the worst fate that could befall your high school daughter.

You know his "Friends" saw this coming. When they talked about which
" Friend" would go first, we all knew who was at the top of the list. All those people who saw this man every day...used him all up. Good looking out 😮
