      It was so hard reading this book after his passing because he was trying so hard to stay sober. Speaking as an addict who has been on and off different substances for years. I’ve been sober 7 months (this time) but it wouldn’t take a lot for me to jump straight back into it. Mathew spoke candidly about his addictions and the absolute daily struggle it is, no matter how much support, treatment or in his case, money you have! There’s nothing that can stop an addict other than themselves. He spoke about using ketamine for the first time, which is what I think his cause of death was and it’s just heartbreaking that it happened to someone who was trying so hard. There’s no conspiracy. He may have done it on purpose but only he could tell us that. I hope he’s finally found some peace because the life an addict is chaotic as fuck!! Which I also believe to be part of the addiction itself. Life is so boring when you’re sober and used to being high or drunk all the time. Nothing compares!

    When his death was announced, but had just started listening to his book, which he also narrated. Hearing his struggles, in his words and his voice was heartbreaking. Then seeing finally get to a place in his life where he found some of the happy that he was missing was hopeful. Chandler was my favorite character on friends but he was also helping people battle through the same struggles he did. He knew what it took to beat it and was ready to help others in the same situation. I miss him, but I hope he found the peace that he looked for his whole life.

    Addiction isn't a personality flaw. It's not something that "bad" people deal with. Addiction stems from feelings of loneliness, and emptiness, and of being unloved and unlovable. Yes, addictions can bring out the worst in people, make them do terrible things, but in general they aren't bad people at all. They're just hurting and they need help.

    I am so grateful for Mathew Perry. In my opinion his comparison between a person having one drink and "feeling a little wonky" and how for him that one drink would reset his world to normalcy is the best description I've heard about alcohol use disorder. I am 14 months sober and honestly, the best addiction medicine is hearing a person who struggled similarly to me share their story. I struggled for 30 years with drinking and/or smoking MJ and inside of it there is so much shame and regret over not being able to stop even knowing that you are hurting yourself and people you love and whom love you....and there is so much judgement pointed towards those of us with genetic markers of addiction, PTSD, mental health differences, and folks suffering from racism and social injustices.
    I plan on reading and putting Mathew Perry's book and this interview in my sobriety tool kit.

      congrats. but you made one large error. equating pot to drinking. thats apples to oranges. alcoholism and opiate addiction are the worse two addictions, period, with a strong argument that alcohol is much worse. You cant reason with a drunk and if reason is not in the room, well, nothing else is. But pot, jesus, you could smoke an ounce a day with little to no effect on your life except if you choose to use it an an excuse. You really should be careful about leading the unknowing on to dangers in life, pot aint one of them. This is coming from someone who has been addicted to everything at some point in life, EXCEPT alcohol, thank god. And alcohol is legal, imagine that.

      Clearly you have no understanding of addiction. Any drug from weed to heroin is dangerous for an addict. One is too many a thousand is never enough. Once you start the cycle again some people never get the chance to be clean again after picking up again.

    • @jonathanmayberrydesigns
      @jonathanmayberrydesigns Год назад

      @@MrAlistairrobertson Actually, clearly you do not. Quit reading from books written by people that havent been addicts or addicts of only one thing. I have been an addict to EVERYTHING, except alcohol, and a differnt points in my life. I could write a book on thew differences of each addiction and how they are ENTIRELY different from each other. I have been addicted to things like marijuana (which was not a real addiction) to IV drug use of everything, literally. They are anything but the same and the addiction qualities and actions so much different from each other. Quit talking about something you clearly have no clue about except through "reading". And someone that has only been addicted to one thing in their life has no idea either and no right to speak or equate them all the same. All the BS know it alls through no experience of their own are what make addictions so clearly misunderstood.

      Thank you for proving my point. Maybe you should go and try and understand what addiction is rather than sounding so Ill informed. You may not live long enough to see that change in the mainstream, but it will! Keep white knuckling it and teaching others its the only way lol. Myself and others will sit back with popcorn and watch you all live the true definition of insanity by relying on such programs to make it thru life. Hearing him talk about it helps me remember I’m not alone. It also feels good to be able to admit my own battle so that I might help another to not feel alone. I’m thrilled to have my life back; it’s not been easy, but it’s so much easier than my life as an active drunk. My one wish, like most, is that I got help sooner…so if you think you might have a problem, (or if you know that you do), then please reach out to a rehab and/or a 12 step group.
