Incase it helps anyone i bought even more special spark plug sockets. SWIVEL HEAD SPARK PLUG SOCKETS 15$ PACK OF 4 AT NAPA. Made the second attempt alot easier. 1st attempt i tried to cut corners and do the plugs from the bottom with the car jacked up so i didnt have to take anything off like a sub tech suggested but i got my regular S.P. socket stuck😂 took 45 mins to get it out and i was like hell nah 😂 put that coil back on and called it a night with just an oil change 😂
Just did my plugs on the 13 hatch, thanks to this video. I didn't understand why you said to tape it. Then when it happened I understood. I used needle nose pliers to remove the sparkplug socket lol ALWAYS TAPE IT!
Wow, actually one of the most clear videos I've seen. Complete from tools needed to every turn and step pulling each plug. Got quoted $400 to replace my plugs and my wallet said NOPE. Time to get my hands dirty! Subbed!
it’s not bad at all and i already have the secondary air thingy deleted so i didn’t have to take a lot off the hardest part is finding the right size sockets 😭
A buddy just has his done for just shy of $2k at the dealer. I for under $500 and with a few crucial tips from this video made it an under 2 hour job for me. Wish i had scene this before my buddy dropped all that coin. Thanks for one of the better install videos on the web no cuts when it gets hard or all of a sudden just holding a part saying and thats how it comes off without actually showing the struggle. More videos need to be like yours no filler just facts.
He did appear to cut the fiddling he had to do on cyl #1's coil pack. He also failed to mention how hard it is to get the coil pack's boot for cyl 4 onto the plug. It's hard to come at it square on, and it's entirely by feel. Getting your hands down in there enough to manipulate it is not easy, and I'm a skinny fuck. Still a really solid video. And it still took my dumb ass nearly 4 hours to finish just the driver side today. Of course, I don't have an electric ratchet.
@@ZakTheRipper18 that was a bit uncalled for on my part to be honest, so I do apologize. It is a shitty job and I think everyone struggles at certain points. Even it takes 4 hours at least you got it done and didnt have pay someone to do it.
@@zackevanz3804Nah nothing you said seemed uncalled for, unless you deleted another comment I didn't see lol. And it took me two hours just to do the passenger side. I'm guessing next time I could do the whole job in 3-4 hours.
Life saver. My 2012 WRX was dying in idle because of bad coil packs on a road trip. Got quoted $1800 from a Midas in Philly to replace them; but replaced them with this video for around $500 total for new coils and put in new plugs too. Epic.
You should see the spark plug from hell on any Nissan Frontier from 2000 to 2004 the one spark plug behind the intake manifold or right under the fire wall .... that's a battle
People just think changing Spark plugs on subarus are intimidating because it's a boxer engine. It's not hard. Like, at all. It takes less work to change the plugs than most modern cars.
Replacing the spark plugs looks like a PITA. LOL! You also need special socket tools to make it feasible to remove and reattach a new spark plug. You did a great job, and thanks for taking the time to share this tutorial.
Great video. I'm about to jump into it tomorrow. FYI, you can remove the rubber socket liner for installing the plugs so they don't get stuck. Just be careful to keep the socket lined up when tightening so you don't break the new spark plugs.
Just as an FYI to anyone watching this video and attempting the job. Do not push the spark plug down too deep into the spark plug socket. The rubber will get stuck on and will make life a pain!
Really well laid-out! Got my '14 WRX hatch about 5k miles ago, and I don't think they plugs have been replaced since 50k miles ago...I'm getting some hiccups when pulling hard in 2nd/3rd, so I'm gonna replace the spark plugs to see if that helps!
Milwaukee makes a battery operated ratchet that sounds like it makes as much noise as an air ratchet? Good video. I just did my timing belt, everyone wanted 1500for the belt, water pump, thermostat etc. parts were right at 500. I will get quotes on the plugs, if I can get them for $400 or less I’ll pay, the right side doesn’t look fun.
did mine today, 2010 Forester XT, put it on the quickjacks, removed the front plastic guard, and the coils and plugs are in plain view. There's nothing to remove to get to them. You'll need it all, get the tools ready. Took 3 hrs total.
Is this considered easy? It is easier than jacking up an engine. In the other cars I have, the plugs are directly accessible. I have changed cam timing belts that were easier than this. My 2013 WRX STI has been nothing but problems almost as bad as my old Fiat 128. But well done, video. I'm glad I don't have to jack up the engine to remove the plugs.
I got a STI 2012, had a fault code p0024 p0014 p0340 got one of the cam sensors replaced, oil change and a engine flush but car still jerks and shuts down. So now I’m looking at checking me spark plugs 😭 thank you for this video!! I don’t know nothing bout anything under the hood but I’m attempting to do it on my own cos I’m tired of taking my car in and out of the shop 😅 costing me money I don’t even have 😂😂😂
awesome video, i have a forester XT was way more difficult lmao, since the engine sits slightly lower, enough to where the frame rail blocks a lot of the the access, had to jack up the engine.
Great video brotha. My sti started having issues gaining speed, and i have a code saying misfiring cylinder, so I was gonna change the plugs and coils, but i thought i was gonna need to lift the engine and what not hah. I dont got an engine hoist tho. But good to know i can do it like that.
I would say no longer than 60k miles if you can, and if you changed them sooner that wouldn’t hurt either. I personally would like to change them every 30k miles or so just to keep the engine always running as healthy as possible.
Incase anybody is looking. I have a swivel that doesn’t swivel very far lol. Only way to make it fit was putting it in without the wrench attached first, then attaching the wrench after the plug was in the socket.
They should seat pretty snug onto the spark plug, just keep trying to get it on there all the way, sometimes they are finicky and seem to not want to sit on the spark plug easily but it’s just that rubber that’s getting in the way or getting folded. It happens to me sometimes too but after some effort I’m able to get it on there all the way. I wouldn’t recommend just leaving it as is till you get it fully seated on the plug. Once everything lines up perfectly it will slide right on with no issue
@@BeeAboveAverage Ok Thanks, might add they're new packs on old plugs that are seized, except for one 🤐. Didn't want to take the risk of stripping threads to remove them.
