Thanks for the info. I've been supplementing with both l tyrosine and 5htp for a few months. I must say, it has to be the combo as there is no way one supplement would do this. But it really does make sense. I have learned about catacholamines and l tyrosine will convert to all 3 catacholamines ( dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine) by addd. And 5 htp to l tryptophan or serotonin. I may suggest adding l glutamine to keep glutamate ratios up with the rest of the neurotransmitters and b vitamins which are good for the acetylcholine neurotransmitter. Long story short, stacking these supplements at the right ratio will give ultimate balance
Oh and don't forget l theanine for GABA. Taking gaba on it's own is not useful since it can't cross the blood brain barrier. In short 200mg 5 htp ( extended release recommended if you can find it ) 200mg l theanine 1g l tyrosine 1000mg or more of all b vitamins 500mg l glutamine This stack I rely for neurotransmitter balance and I've never had a problem taking this everyday but that's me.

@@DrJanelleSinclair 500mg tyrosine Morning 5g tryptophan Night ( I dont understand why talk about 5-htp if tryptophan is super cheap and gives the same? or its better to take 5-htp?)
5-htp should only be taken in the evening because this is the time the body naturally secretes serotonin and forms melatonin. 5-htp should only be taken on an empty stomach at least 2 hours after last meal. 5-Htp is an amino acid, therefore it competes with other proteins for absorption, to avoid this be sure not to eat within hours of consuming protein. It can be taken with a small amount of carbs (fruit juice or a cracker, or a slice of apple) to aid absorption. Try to find a 5-Htp supplement that has the cofactors vitamin c and vitamin B6, or buy these separately. Tyrosine should be taken once in the morning when dopamine is naturally released, also on an empty stomach, with cofactors vitamin C, b-complex, fish oil. You can safely take from 500mg and even up to 8 -10 grams. 10 grams is on the high side, but is still considered safe, but not for extended periods. I would not advise taking 10 grams in one dose.

I take 5-HTP during the winter for depression and it works; however, it causes me to experience bad dreams every night that are very vivid. I hate going to bed at night because of this. Also, I take Levothyroxine which interacts with L-tyrosine possibly lowering dopamine production do not take L-tyrosine. There very little research on supplements, except for small studies, making it difficult to get an scientific information. Does anyone else experience unpleasant dreams?
Thanks for the video! Could you maybe do a video about the effect that fructose absorption has on serotonin, zinc and folic acid levels? I was diagnosed with this a couple days ago and my depression, fatigue and gut problems make so much more sense now
I take 1000mg tyrosine once a day with 50mg of 5HTP at night. I cycle this off on the weekends so the nerve cells don’t become desensitized to the compound
Thanks so much for this video! Question: why does everywhere I look on the internet say to take L-Tyrosine for up to 3 months. Does this have something to do with how long it was studied? Can I take it longer?
I just get that is meant to be cycled to allow the body to readjust it’s chemical flows, like stop 2 3 weeks see how you doing before restarting. I don’t have the exact science for that but the body does better letting it have a rest cycle from the feedback it’s required from taking the supplement
Thank you for amazing info Dr. my question is simple, If the supplement is helping and you figure out your dose range, for how long is safe to continue taking it and also there are any sort of withdrawal symptoms after severing its use. Thank again for your support
Thank you honey!! Your advice has since my life practically! I just want to know does one interact with the other one if you take them at the same time and cancel the other one out? I read that you shouldn’t take amino acids altogether because L tyrosine and L Phenaline sorry I can’t spell the second time, cancel out the rest! It was in a book by Patrick Holford and he recommends taking five HTP when you want to chill out and taking L tyrosine when you want energy! He says don’t take them together because they will cancel each other out whether he does say there is a need to take one when you take the other one for the reasons you have mentioned in your fabulous video! I want your take on this please?! Thank you for informing everybody and please do not listen to Ungrateful Spiritually unconscious people! LOL!
Thank you for this very informative video I have one question You mentioned not to take l-tyrosine if a person is diagnosed with bipolar disorder Can you elaborate on the reasons why not? And what to do in case of a bipolar disorder diagnosis in terms of taking 5htp and l-tyrosine supplements? Thank you
Hi Marny. One of the possible causes of bipolar disorder is high dopamine levels. Tyrosine increases dopamine, so you should not take it if you have bipolar. I would look into zinc deficiency, vitamin d deficiency, progesterone deficiency and mthfr genetic weaknesses. I've got videos on all of those imbalances and you can treat the deficiency and this may help bipolar.
5htp should not be taken in high doses. Also, it's better to take mucuna pruriens for dopamine. L tyrosine can affect the thyroid negatively. TheJDocRealMinute has good videos on this subject.
Dr if the patient has anxiety and fatigue but very mild symptoms, only can take the supplements when is at home is ok to have only 1 dose of each supplement. Tyrosine 500 mg before breakfast, and 5 http 100 mg night time? thanks amazing explanations!
I eat foods containing a lot of tryptophan (48 oz of chick peas), then I wait 4 hours and take 3 grams of tyrosine, is this a efficient diet? Will I still develop tolerance to tyrosine?
In another comment she said she thinks 5htp is better because it is already partially converted and people have a problem converting from l-tryptophan to 5htp.
You need to look at the synthesis of these neurotransmitters. I have homozygous variant TPH2 which means my serotonin production is very low, but my TH gene is very fast. Taking 5htp here shouldn't need a boost of dopamine too, however, my DBH gene is also screwed which means my dopa to norep conversion is heavily impaired. I dont think taking more dopa is the answer here, as I also have fast MAOB, but perhaps a dopamine/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor would be better?
I have felt very anxious since the stop of Citalopram (antidepressant). I have ADHD and take 15 mg of Adderall every day. Should I consider taking 5-HTP for some time or just stopping Adderall for a bit? I feel good when on Adderall, but when not in my system, I feel more anxious. Taking citalopram was the biggest regret/choice of my life.
What could be a possible explanation then to why my sister only slept 5 nights in a row when taking 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-htp) and stopped sleeping if it’s not the fact she didn’t take L-tyrosine?y thought is since 5-Hydroxytryptophan end result is melatonin, taking only it can cause a melatonin overdose which can cause insomnia, and L-tyrosine would balance that out.
My naturopath (who specializes in mental health) prescribed for me, 5-HTP in the PM (to promote sleep) and L-Tyrosine in the AM (natural remedy for treating my ADHD). Makes sense to me -a boost in dopamine first thing to make my day more productive, and a boost in serotonin at night to help relax and encourage sleep. These are not the only supplements I take - just stating in relevance to the video. Curious as to why a person with Bipolar dx should not take L-Tyrosine? I am Bipolar and ADHD and am trying the L-Tyrosine as a means to treat my ADHD brain naturally. I feel like if I treat my ADHD and am more productive & focused, I'll avoid the shame spiral that tends to wreak havoc on my moods (therefore treating the Bipolar as well).
That makes logical sense. Don't know if it does biologically. I don't know enough about those body systems or pharmacology to answer your theory. I do know bipolar disorder is biological and not mental Good Luck
Just Suzie It is, and hereditary. My father has bipolar disorder. You made the blanket statement, “Do not take L-Tyrosine if you have bipolar disorder” and I’m wondering if you could elaborate on that? Is it because it could be too activating and trigger mania? Thank you!
I want to quit my antidepressant lexapro and start useing amino acids I also take welbutrin but dont plan on quitting. Can I take both 5htp and l tyrosine with wellbutrin? Also if I start useing 5htp can I stop the lexapro faster? I'm down from 20 to 10 mg but want to just stop at this point
You got this! I was on lexapro for 3 years and got of just tapering, 20, 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5... each for 2 weeks. I personally feel a lot better of it and am taking Probiotics for gut health, Ltyrosine and i have cut out my caffeine consumption which tremendously helped my anxiety.

You can find them balanced in foods, almost like that was where we were intended to get them.
Do you take it with tyrosine ?!
It's worth a try.
5htp worked ridiculously well for me (like, unbelievable) for about 4 weeks, then i noticed some side effects, and stopped using it. Im about to order some Tyrosine now, and I’m gonna try it again (its been a few months) both together. I know these supplements are not supposed to be used indefinitely, but if i can get even 6 months to a year, that might make all the difference.
what dosage did you take?@@TheAlibabatree
Thank you for this information!!!! I have been taking both. Now I'm going to just try 5-HTP. I'm hoping I could cut out the Tyrosine. Thanks again Doctor. You are smart and pretty.

In short
200mg 5 htp ( extended release recommended if you can find it )
200mg l theanine
1g l tyrosine
1000mg or more of all b vitamins
500mg l glutamine
This stack I rely for neurotransmitter balance and I've never had a problem taking this everyday but that's me.
How much you take 5htp and tyrosine?
Thanks Dr. Janelle I managed to come out of antidepressant with your help. Its been a week without Cymbalta. I have been taking 5HTP 50mg 3 times a day but i still feel confused cannot remember things much so i will add tyrosine from tomorrow onwards. I also have been taking L theanine 500mg twice a day morning and evening. I wonder if its necessary to have them both. Appreciate your help dr. i am a single mum and have struggled 17 yrs with antidepressants i want to look after my daughter who is 16 now. May god bless you.
I had the same issue with the 5htp and I started taking only one dose right before bed along with Tyrosine, L-Theanine, and GABA.

is it possible to identify if a person is deficient in either serotonin or dopamine or both? if the answer is correct, then doctors should always run such tests before subscribing antidepressants. but i assume, that's not in the interests of big pharma.
Same question I have.
@@aliveandwell3958 exactly, why prescribe serotonin when you have no issues with it. and when you start replacing what your body already produces in sufficient amounts, you just harm yourself in the long run.

I recently learned the new topic people have real research...
This is the first I’ve heard of this. I take 5HTP at night and I take L tyrosine in the day with Theanine.
I plan to do the same, how has that combination worked for you? I currently take 200mg L-theanine and 200mg at night but I plan to add 5-htp and L-thirosine as well as the doctor says
@@luiggyorlandi I had to back off from the tyrosine. It was making me a bit jittery. I probably need to take less.

I'm sorry what is 1:10 ratio? I couldn't understand that part. Like the dosage of L Tyrosine should be 10x higher than 5 HTP? Can someone please clarify?
10:21 minutes. taking it together
I tried separately htp and tyrosine and didn’t have much results. I didn’t know this informs, just intuitively bought htp, tyrosine and velvet beans ( macuna prurience). After two weeks I felt completely different.
🔴Just took 500mg tyrosine + 100mg 5htp on an empty stomach...
🔵its 8am & I'll be fasting until 12pm.. let's see how this goes
So how did it go?
A standard ratio of tyrosine to tryptophan is 10:1. You may want to trial less 5htp or more tyrosine together in the future
@@DrJanelleSinclair 500mg tyrosine Morning 5g tryptophan Night ( I dont understand why talk about 5-htp if tryptophan is super cheap and gives the same? or its better to take 5-htp?)
@@DrJanelleSinclair Went GREAT... I felt smooth, happy and productive. Just took the combo again TODAY.
Protip: ECGC to help em cross the Brain Blood Barrier
Nice tip. EGCG got me through some long-ish covid symptoms.
Thank u for a comprehensive video Dr Janelle, appreciate yr work😊 Currently i am taking Ashwagandha for anxiety and L-Glutamine for stomach lining. Is it ok to take them with 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine ?

I take 5-HTP during the winter for depression and it works; however, it causes me to experience bad dreams every night that are very vivid. I hate going to bed at night because of this. Also, I take Levothyroxine which interacts with L-tyrosine possibly lowering dopamine production do not take L-tyrosine. There very little research on supplements, except for small studies, making it difficult to get an scientific information. Does anyone else experience unpleasant dreams?
Me too. Been having the most horrific dreams since starting the combination 3 weeks ago. These dreams make your worst horror film look like kids play!

50-100mg 5htp WITH meals; Tyrosine before lunch or breakfast
Why take the 5-htp with meals ?
Thanks so much for this video! Question: why does everywhere I look on the internet say to take L-Tyrosine for up to 3 months. Does this have something to do with how long it was studied? Can I take it longer?
Jaclyn Rawls Wondering as well.
I just get that is meant to be cycled to allow the body to readjust it’s chemical flows, like stop 2 3 weeks see how you doing before restarting. I don’t have the exact science for that but the body does better letting it have a rest cycle from the feedback it’s required from taking the supplement
I think people worry whether or not taking 5htp alone can cause dopamine deficiency in the long run and vice versa.
LOL!
Thank you very much. Great content 👍.
I just found a supplement that has both 200mg of 5-htp and 250mg of L-Tyrosine together. I just ordered it.
That's a lot of 5htp compared to tyrosine. Should normally be approx 1:10. I.e. 25mg 5htp to 250mg tyrosine.
@@DrJanelleSinclair oh wow, ok I will be careful with it.

I have one question
You mentioned not to take l-tyrosine if a person is diagnosed with bipolar disorder
Can you elaborate on the reasons why not?
And what to do in case of a bipolar disorder diagnosis in terms of taking 5htp and l-tyrosine supplements?
Thank you
Hi Marny. One of the possible causes of bipolar disorder is high dopamine levels. Tyrosine increases dopamine, so you should not take it if you have bipolar. I would look into zinc deficiency, vitamin d deficiency, progesterone deficiency and mthfr genetic weaknesses. I've got videos on all of those imbalances and you can treat the deficiency and this may help bipolar.
@Wilfy Martinez how many times are you going to ask that
Great information. Thank you doc. I love your accent by the way :)
I can't sleep 7 hours straight :( I have add when I don't sleep correctly
Hi Doctor, is 5HTP superior to L-Tryptophan?
In another comment she said she thinks 5htp is better because it is already partially converted and people have a problem converting from l-tryptophan to 5htp.
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
For depression what dose do you recommend for each and when do you recommend to take them
You need to look at the synthesis of these neurotransmitters.
Great info, thank you! At 9min 40 sec, you accidentally displayed 500mg-200mg of Tyrosine rather than 500mg-2000mg.
Thanks. ☺️ Unfortunately I can't change the video after it's been uploaded.

Thank you!
