Twilight Zone: The Movie is a 1983 American science fiction anthology film produced by Steven Spielberg and John Landis. Based on Rod Serling's 1959-1964 television series of the same name, the film features four stories directed by Landis, Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller. Landis' segment is an original story created for the film, while the segments by Spielberg, Dante, and Miller are remakes of episodes from the original series. The film's cast includes Dan Aykroyd, Albert Brooks, Scatman Crothers, John Lithgow, Vic Morrow, and Kathleen Quinlan. Original series cast members Burgess Meredith, Patricia Barry, Peter Brocco, Murray Matheson, Kevin McCarthy, Bill Mumy, and William Schallert also appear in the film, with Meredith assuming Serling's role as narrator.
On July 23, 1982, Vic Morrow and two child actors, Renee Shinn Chen and Myca Dinh Le, are killed in an accident involving a helicopter during filming on the California set of Twilight Zone: The Movie. Morrow, age 53, and the children, ages six and seven, were shooting a Vietnam War battle scene in which they were supposed to be running from a pursuing helicopter. Special-effects explosions on the set caused the pilot of the low-flying craft to lose control and crash into the three victims. The accident took place on the film’s last scheduled day of shooting.
Twilight Zone co-director John Landis (Blues Brothers, Trading Places, National Lampoon’s Animal House) and four other men working on the film, including the special-effects coordinator and the helicopter pilot, were charged with involuntary manslaughter. According to a 1987 New York Times report, it was the first time a film director faced criminal charges for events that occurred while making a movie. During the subsequent trial, the defense maintained the crash was an accident that could not have been predicted while the prosecution claimed Landis and his crew had been reckless and violated laws regarding child actors, including regulations about their working conditions and hours. Following the emotional 10-month trial, a jury acquitted all five defendants in 1987. The familes of the three victims filed lawsuits against Landis, Warner Brothers and Twilight Zone co-director and producer Steven Spielberg that were settled for undisclosed amounts.
Twilight Zone: The Movie was released in the summer of 1983. The film, which received mixed reviews, was based on a popular science fiction TV series of the same name that aired from 1959 to 1964 and was created by Rod Serling. In the movie, four directors- Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and George Miller-each adapted a different episode of the TV series, which chronicled the stories of people who found themselves in highly unusual situations.
Vic Morrow had previously appeared in numerous TV shows and such films as The Blackboard Jungle (1955) and The Bad News Bears (1976). He was the father of actress Jennifer Jason Leigh (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Margot at the Wedding, The Hateful Eight).

I watched this movie yesterday. I was astounded (and disgusted) that 1. The movie was allowed to be released at all 2. Nobody was held accountable in any way & 3. There was zero mention or acknowledgment of those that essentially gave their lives for this movie anywhere to be seen. Rest in peace all three victims. You deserved so much better.

I remember when this happened. Ever since John Landis was acquitted on all charges, I have boycotted all of his work. The fact that he kept telling the helicopter pilot to keep getting lower for the shot, the fact that Landis had 2 under aged kids working at night and paid them under the table, the fact that 3 lives were lost on the making of this movie, and nothing was done to Landis, is an insult to the memories of the victims. John Landis should be buried under a prison. Even to this day, the whole story still gets me mad. Goes to show you that Hollywood folks are above the law. Great video Scott. You have such profound respect and class with each of your videos like this. May all 3 rest in peace. May karma come back to find Landis one day.

RIP Vic Morrow and those poor little kids. It's still so haunting to see the footage all these years later. Deaths that were easily preventable. Landis might as well killed them himself. Landis was actually yelling for the pilot to fly even lower, already below safety, when it was struck. Also sent everyone home and authorities not called for hours, who arrived finding almost everyone gone. Other than lawyer fees all he lost for everything he caused and covered up was Spielberg as a friend. It's incredible the way filming was allowed to operate and very little if any consequences except lawyers or insurance company premium increases.

After reading about this and seeing other videos of the crash as well as the court case, I believe Landis and the others in charge of this movie paid some people off to get a not guilty verdict. In 1987 I was a juror on a trial in downtown L.A. that was next door to the Landis trial. Occasionally on break from the trial I was on I would see him standing outside conferring with his attorneys. The day the verdict came in, I happened to be on break. It was pandemonium with reporters waiting outside the courtroom and people rushing out. Didn't take long for Landis to come out with his wife Deborah. He was grinning ear to ear. There definitely wasn't any justice that day.

I remember when that happened. It was big news. Of course those were the days when politics wasn't the 24/7 agenda like now. Anyway i was a big fan of Vic Morrow. He was a very good & popular actor. I remember watching him every week in the TV show "Combat". RIP Vic & the two little souls lost that sad day

Thank you for making this video! The Twilight Zone Movie accident is such a very sad tragedy that always interest me and makes me so mad that no justice was ever served for these three victims. I refused to watch any movie that John Landis made because of this, and the stories I've heard about the way he acted before, during and after the trial! When you were talking about the quote on Vic Morrow's grave, I saw or read an interview with Jennifer Jason Leigh (Sorry, I can't remember where! I think it was interview with a magazine?) and she said that her older sister Carrie was the one who came up with the quote that was put on their father's grave. Jennifer was estranged with her father around the time of his death and still till this day, she doesn't say why she and her father were never close.

Growing up with an older brother, I watched a lot of Vic Morrow on TV. The Twilight Zone weekly series comes to mind, Combat! I always liked to watch Vic perform whether he was on TV or in a movie. This tragedy was horrific losing three people that way and made worse to watch Landes sit in court and smirk while he let others take the blame. Like you I never watched his films again. RIP Vic and children all gone way too soon.

I remember hearing this story years ago and it was heartbreaking. John Landis and the others should not have gotten away with this. The arrogance of John Landis set this tragedy in motion and his own words of saying we may lose the helicopter says he knew the danger. There are words to describe people like him but they can’t be said here. This was a horrific tragedy that didn’t have to happen.

Heard on the radio about the tragedy on the way back from the liquor store, great day is over. Good job again Scott. Buddy Scott, you most decently present these tragedies in the upmost loving way, You Rock Mr. Buddy. John Landis wasn't the only one to get so outrageous with filming and this is absolutely tragic. There was a documentary for the movie that was never made called " It's Not My Cross To Bear" about the life of musician Greg Allman where the director felt they should film on a live train track even though they were not permitted to do so by the railroad. They did it anyway and lost one of the filming crew a wonderful young lady and another crew member injured for life.
Greg Allman was so p issed he pulled all rights from them continuing the movie. Vic Morrow was great in the Twighlight Movie , and so sad the children that will never grow up.
Excellent Video Sir Buddy Scott ☮ & ♥ The 🌎 World is yours.
