Because most led headlights don't produce a controlled beam pattern, notice how the halogens look like a horizontal slit, good led bulbs will do that too, the wash pattern bulbs should be illegal.
Scotty, the problem here is how light is emitted in the reflector. A halogen bulb emits light at from an arc at point X in 3D space, and the LED bulb emits light from a diode at point Y in 3D space. Your reflector was only designed for the first scenario; the second results in light giong where you don't want it, wasting it and often blinding other motorists
Agreed! Need separate headlight equipment (ie projector beam) in order to not blind other motorists. These led lights might look cool, but they mostly just blind others.
Same concept as throwing a cheap HID kit in reflector housings instead of a proper projector retrofit. Sadly, the average person prefers form over function and quality for free.
Chris CC - Yes, if you believe the dumbbells who make stuff up as they go along and repeat what moron's say about LEDs with no basis in fact or truth. These simpletons who are terrified of LEDs are descendants of the folks who said Thomas Edison was the antichrist because he made candles obsolete. Do your own research and don't believe these chicken littles who are scared to death of progress. What's wrong with being able to see better at night? These naysayers of better lighting probably hope God will turn down the sun's light because they think it's too bright, too.
Chris CC yes, they will... If your vehicle came with projectors, whether or not they are halogen, hid and LED bulbs work okay, as long as they are the proper color. You can't see anything in bad weather with anything much higher than 4300 Kelvin. The human eye doesn't respond to the bluer parts of the spectrum as well... Plus, it messes with your hormone production, causes eye strain and headaches. 4300 K is the perfect color to have, brilliant warm white light...
Hate to break your bubble...But the halogen lights are better. What people are missing out on here is that the color range is what really makes these lights look brighter. If your car came with Halogen lights you should stick to them for the time being. These LED lights are not made to work with your head light's reflector. It was designed to work with the Halogen it came with. The color is a BIG deal. The yellower the light the better it will allow you to see at night. Specially in bad weather. The bluish glare that LED lights emit will light up every raindrop and / or every snowflake. This is the last thing you want. Also the bluish glare will cause visual fatigue. As it will light up road sign and cause you to squint. Your eyes are amazing and they can adjust to different lighting conditions. I have been driving professionally for years. Yes I have tried them (a lot of them) so I am talking from experience. I will not get into a pissing match with people who say LEDs are better. Yes they can be brighter, Yes they can be easier on the electrics of a automobile. This is not the point. The point here is to see, be seen, and not blind oncoming traffic with the glare that so many LEDs cause. Oh ya and One VERY important note These light are NOT DOT approved. (at least not the ones I have tried.) -John
It's the same as with HID lights. If you put them into lamp designed for halogen in majority of cases you'll blind the drivers coming towards you. Cars fitted with HID/LED from the factory have the lamps designed so that it would concentrate the light beam properly. So retrofitting a car with HID/LED using the lamps designed for halogen is not the same as having them fitted from factory for HID/LED.
i used halogen in my truck and the view range was really poor i chqnged to xenon and it's really easy see in the night but in the rain it's hard see the road for that reason i made a set up with auxiliary headlights my auxiliary lights have more power than the halogen heqdlights yet it' s the same really in the rain it's hard to see just that.
Juan Fernandez- These cars were designed to use LEDs. Essentially they work like fog lights. They cut off light from shinning above the hood. But yes the color frequency is too high. there is no need to be that blue. Hey if it sells there will be some one willing to make it and sell it regardless of whether or not it is good. McDonalds has been around for years..No Decades and everyone knows it is bad for their health but we still eat it. Don't take it like I am dumping on people. I am really not. I love Scotty and his videos. I am just sharing my thoughts and experience. All the best friend
@@ChristopherWhite-yg4hh It's seriously annoying and there should be a limit placed on how freaking bright these lights should be. Dont even get me started driving at night time.
@@ShawnFX so bad you had to deal with badly aligned bulbs. If you had a sclass in frond ot you, or an a8, where they have more than 4 led bulbs per side, they shine super bright, have a big coverage, and do not blind people. Yes leds SHOULD get brighter and more advanced
Why is everyone countering the video and saying it's dangerous (I admit, to others it is dangerous)?? Did Scotty tell you to ACTUALLY REPLACE the halogen bulbs? He isn't saying that you should replace them, it means that you could replace them if you wanted to do so. The haters come here or anywhere else is because they're downright bored in life and have nothing else to do, and so they post these nonsensical comments. Just shows you know what I mean. If it is the truth forgive me then, I'm just justifying the truth from the others Very well done Scotty! Keep it up! Easily overtook other mechanics who have a hard time catching up
This is just a personal thing but I hate to see these things coming towards me on a dark two-lane road. I can't see shit. That's why I don't install them on my car if I wanted to blind people I might as well just use my high beams. Maybe my eyes are sensitive I don't know xD
lol true, but only in really dark places that happens and usually you are runing your high beams in that case i installed led in my interior i hated not being able to see stuff when i drop it by mistake. now i kinda dislike to much light but im glad i can see my interior. i may do led lights for the whole car but at the momment im fine with the regular bulbs
+nippl pinshy Sometimes it's not the lights, sometimes it could be the type of housing they're in, or that the lights aren't properly adjusted. Personally, I've seen people with HALOGENS blind me all the time, and most of the time its not coming from their high beams. LED's belong in projector housings since that would shape up a better beam pattern which would less likely cause glare to oncoming traffic.
+Tyler Hacker I don't know even high end factory cars that have the right housing blind me, ya there fine in there are no bumps but as soon as that Mercedes or bmw hit a bump that led shit blinds my eyes
Another thing to consider is the light color. Bluish, or whitish light will be reflected back in fog, rain or snow, whereas yellowish light (like halogen) will cut thru all that and actually light the road, not fog or the rain or snow itself. If you can choose the light color, choose the lowest color temperature available for the best efficiency.
Wish it were that easy to replace the bulbs on my Fusion, Scotty. These geniuses have designed the car to where you have to take the front bumper off the car to replace the lamp.
hid's are notorious for blowing out cause of the power the use is ridiculous I knlw friends who have bought and installed them and they blew out in the first week I think if their not factory do touch the hid's
LEDs last longer, are more energy efficient, and are better quality lights. That's why they're more expensive than HIDs. You pay more for better quality
"Brother" ... "Sebastian's Rum" is the "Best" Rum period !!!!!!! Looks like your on Tortola !!!! Good for you Scotty !!!! One of my all time favorite places on earth !!! :)
Yes, we can kinda see how bright the LED lights are (even though this is in no way a proper way to compare the two). We can also very clearly see how they lack the proper pattern of the light, which means you'll blind the oncoming traffic all the time. And what we can't see is how the pattern actualy looks on road - brighter looking light does not automatically equal better visibility.
Thanks for the vid Scotty I've been following your channel since 2011 lol. Just installed hid on headlights and foglamps. People can cry for all i care.
One thing to note is that some cars monitor current usage to tell if a light is burnt out or not functioning properly. As a result, using an LED lamp may trick the car's computer into thinking the light is burnt out. If so, it may be necessary to add a resistor or make other modifications to the lamps. It's more trouble than it's worth, IMO. I'll wait a few more years for LED tech to get better. Awesome channel! First time commenting, but I've been a fan for a long time. :)
@Scotty Kilmer I have watched you for a long time and have learned a lot, but on this subject you are wrong, Do Not get 3 sided or anything other than 2 sides LED's.
These still aren't as bright as HID headlights. I can't stand assholes who put those headlights on their cars when they weren't designed for HID, especially the big lifted trucks who think they're cool. Especially when on a dark road in the mountains. It looks the second coming.
+RichardDJLilD Yeah that doesn't justify using those lights in yiur big truck. I guess as long as you can see that's all that matters and screw on coming traffic that is being blinded.
You're right! I picked up some LED cubes just to light up ditches and shoulders better after one too many close-calls with country deers. They weren't anything fancy, but throw a fair amount of light to the side, and I have them wired on a switch off the headlight switch so they'll only run when the headlights are on and their own switch is on.
But look at what the benefits of led bulbs would be they last much longer and stay as bright as they were at the start until the end plus they are cheaper because of that you can get pretty damn bright led bulbs if you really look just never buy the cheap ones buy the $75+ kits that are made by real companies
Not to mention, since they're using less power, there's less strain on the alternator, so you'll get a reduction in the minuscule drop in fuel economy caused by running your lights.
Nice that those LEDs don't need an external box to regulate the power! It's all contained in the bulb assembly, nice. Truly plug and play, no velcro, no zip ties. Cool.
Easy to install....sure.....if you have easy access to the back of the housings. theses days, most cars, you have to take something apart or remove some components to even get the housing. I miss cars of the old days when the headlight was one big glass square thing that had regular philips screws right in the front of the bulb Super easy to change.
Like my mother's 2011 Malibu. You have to take the whole bumper off. That was a nice job to have to do in late September in Phoenix when it was still 108 at 10:30 at night. Dumb design.
HID are the best option always but they require an amplifier and different wiring than most conventional bulbs, and just sticking in one in your car is wildly illegal
You are the man. Did you look at the box. Those certifications mean nothing except to say the light works as intended, and will not be dangerous if operated as directed. When something is D.O.T. approved for road use every company know to put that on the packaging. It cost money to have something certified by the D.O.T. so you take advantage of that. -John
Yep and D.O.T. is for USA only. E4 certification is for Europe and even more expensive process. Anyways I'm pretty sure that thing doesn't really have it either. This would not pass MOT check (Yearly road worthiness test) and yeah they do check the bulbs.
Wow awesome, I didn't know we were there yet as far as having led headlight bulbs. I know people have been wanting that for a while but they've never been bright enough until now. Previously you could only do led signals, side markers, accent lights, etc.
Also, brighter(as in raw Lumens) isn't necessarily true I have personally discovered. . It looks brighter as the color temperature is higher, more around 5000k vs the 3000k or so of the stock halogen, but may be lower lumen and thus the light does not throw as far.
Nathan unknown I remember I purchased a hid low beam for 2008 odyssey from amazon. I installed it work for a week and start flickering and fucked all my fuses
They have a ballast but it is not called a ballast but it is called a "LED Driver" The ones that do not have a driver are low powered LEDs as the bright ones that cost $100+ use high end LEDs and they get driven at 2.5A or so, which is why you need a LED driver to provide that constant current and not rely on resistors
As the bulbs are just about same lenght and emitte light around them I do not see the issue some comments are about. The halogen lightbulb disperses the light EXACTLY the same way it standard Halogen housing. In fact, the tip of the halogen bulb is blackened out where the LED bulb doesnt project any light from the tip of it either. so its all the same but brighter. Thanks Scotty, good show!!!!!!!!
Great video Scotty I have been wanting to upgrade my lights but didn't want to do an HID Conversion Kit my self or pay someone to do it cause I didn't want to drill holes in my car and if they went out pay big bucks again. So I looked into the ones in your video and found the right size H11 that will fit my 2012 Kia forte on amazon and place my order today. Can't wait till they get in, Thanks again Scotty I have learned so much from you over the years.
High Beam and Low Beam size h11 or h1 www.amazon.com/YUMSEEN-Headlight-universal-Worry-Free-warranty/dp/B01FS0QP4G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477121251&sr=8-1&keywords=h11+yumseen
Please make sure though that you don't install LED headlights into housings for old halogen bulbs, halogen housings are meant to focus the light and combined with LED bulbs it's outright dangerous to oncoming drivers A few years ago I was crossing over the ridge up at the edge of the county here, it was January and there was a foot of snow on the ground including the road. I see his headlights coming as I'm about to crest the top, but even though he should've seen my lights and dimmed his, he didn't so BAM we cross over at the same time and right up close I'm blinded by full bright white LED lights (clearly in a halogen housing). Luckily I wasn't going fast and braked slow to a stop, took almost a minute to see again and notice I was 10 feet short of hitting the guardrail. Seriously, more dangerous crap can happen when idiots get championed into buying LED lamps without doing the FULL upgrade.
Scotty, what about these new vehicle that have a computer on board that controls everything including the lights, some people have issues with the LED flickering and getting warning lights on the dash?
I would love to put these on my car but in the state of california you cant have blue light going through the reflector lens. But i respect that because without government, who else will protect me from the dangerous blue light *sarcasm*
You've got to remember......the state of California knows so much more than any other state in the union. It's actually a joke in the rest of the country with all those stupid warnings. I actually bought a box of 9MM cartridges for my pistol and there was a warning on the box that stated that "This item contains products known to the state of California, to be a health hazard ". No! Really!
actually most people in los angeles do so. i also live in l.a. and have been pulled over various times and have NEVER gotten in trouble due to the lights. just dont get blue! get white/blue. you should have no problem.
+Hammer0f Thor that same warning is on bottles of oil for cars. I live in Florida and I've seen it on every bottle. I also see it on the cooling spray I use for my hair clippers
That is because oil's pretty bad for you, and still, people seem to handle it plenty.... maybe we need more warnings? What exactly is wrong with making dangerous things be labelled as such?
Back in '73-'74, when I started driving, I always hit the road in my dad`s `54 F-100 stepside. Maybe it was because the headlight buckets seemed bigger back then, or because I always adjusted my low beam incandescents at a higher angle than the law allowed (I ran my dad`s truck under the NJ commercial self-inspection so I didn`t go to inspection), I was much happier back then with driving at night. With today`s smaller, sometimes dinky headlights, you absolutely need brighter bulbs. Oh, for those cruising days! Life was simple. Not nearly so many choices as today!
If the LEDs are stock then they are designed to work properly and according to DOT rules. Adding these lights aftermarket is not the answer to lighting the dark road ahead of you.
If I could give you two thumbs up for this video, and for all your hard work in making your videos, I would!! Thanks also for the source link to the LED bulbs you used.
LED isn't brighter than normal halogen lamps, it's just whiter and more annoyingly blinding even in daytime as the spectrum of light they emit isn't blocked by many sunglasses. In all seriousness anyone considering installing these on their conventional non projector equipped cars better be prepared for oncoming traffic to flash their high-beams at them.
I totally agree with David, Arek, Entgineer, avs247, and those who have the same opinions about these aftermarket white lights, HID or LED. Take those out Scotty!
I installed mine in jan 2016 on my daily driver. My brights look like daytime. Seems like you got the white/blue 5000k. They also have leds at 2500k. Either way, you will love them, but i do not look forward to everyone having these. The roads will be too bright, and there will always be those knuckleheads with their super bright LEDs shining in my eyes or mirrors
+Jonathan Anderson no you are the jackass. My lights are aimed properly. I do my own work, and verify. Seems you will be that person, as you do not even verify your comments.
+Jonathan Anderson surprisingly, they look really nice - and almost OEM. Friends thought it was a new mercedes pulling up at first. I have led interior lights now, and led backup bulbs. The interior lights remind me of a 2009 Cadillac DTS i used to have. The instant in LED head lights is the coolest part. The backup lights are not sexy at all, as they have a projection through the lens that resembles someone shining a movie projector through the lens, but they are at least 2x brighter than the standard bulbs. And when i am going back, the bright lights alert people too.
It is possible with the right reflectors and bulbs, Eric the Car guy put a set in his Honda Element that had the proper pattern, in a projector style housing it can be made to work. In standard reflector styles though it's the same as dropping a HID in, horrible pattern and nasty glare. I love LED's but they have to be in properly engineered housings as the point that the light comes from can never be the same as a element style bulb.
This is not DOT Legal. The increased glare is BLINDING to other drivers. As an optometrist, I strongly encourage you to change back to halogens that are properly in focus in that housing if you plan to drive it on the street. This is 100% illegal to use on the road.
Your inspector is a fool and a charlatan. Here's the DOT Law: www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?node=se49.6.571_1108 S6.5.3.4 Replaceable bulb headlamp markings. S6.5.3.4.1 The lens of each replaceable bulb headlamp must bear permanent marking in front of each replaceable light source with which it is equipped that states either: The HB Type, if the light source conforms to S11 of this standard for filament light sources, or the bulb marking/designation provided in compliance with Section VIII of appendix A of 49 CFR Part 564 (if the light source conforms to S11 of this standard for discharge light sources). Also: www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?385476-Yes-another-LED-Headlight-conversion-question&p=4440310&viewfull=1#post4440310 Also: blogs.findlaw.com/law_and_life/2012/06/are-blue-xenon-hid-headlights-legal.html Your bulbs do not have the DOT markings, and they are not DOT legal in the USA. You are breaking the law, and furthermore endangering others lives by reducing their visibility with your glare producting nonsense. Trust me when I say this is HIGHLY illegal, and worse as an SAE mechanic you are promoting such nonsense because you probably got the product at a discount or free. Scotty, I like your channel, but you need to understand this is not just "bad" or "improper" this is LAW. You can and will be cited for this, as will others.
People aren't bothered by those lights. There's trucks out here where I live, driving with off road lights on and blinding everyone down the road. I think thats more dangerous than some Civic or Celica with LED headlights. Let's not be a Debby Downer man, laws are created by boring people. Don't be a boring person.
+alexisthemexican My car came with them installed from the factory. I believe all car manufacturers are changing to led lights in the next couple years.. Just think of it as job security for you.
LED lights "from the factory" are DOT legal. However, what Scotty is doing above is a retrofit and change of light source inside a reflector housing not made for this new light source. As a result, there is increased glare. Please read the candlepowerforums and www.danielsternlighting.com/ for reference GulfVet.
now HID bulbs are really bright, but these leds are really no problem when you use correctly designed leds. May modern cars come stock with em as they also use less power hence slightly increase gas mileage.
Well, if people don't have the brains to make sure their headlights are aimed properly, any bulb will produce glare. Projector housings are bullshit - not needed for LEDs if the driver aims the lights correctly.
Stock LED even in halogen light are different. LEDs are mounted on the top of the housing, not in center. You shouldn’t put LEDs in headlight designed for filament bulb, it causes terrible glare, even when you think its setup properly. Over here is Europe is rightfully illegal to do the swap. You shouldn’t make your driving safer by blinding others and making their driving less safe.
I hate how bright these LED bulbs are. They seriously need a dim option for when driving in city limits just so you don't accidentally blind other drivers. Anytime one of these cars comes at me in the dark on the way home from work i always see sunspots for 30 seconds after. Even if i look away. My solution right now is to just close my eyes until the offending car goes past. Xenon bulbs are even worse. May halogen bulbs reign supreme for all eternity+^_^+
If you have these on your car, stop wondering why motorcyclists flip you off everytime you go out. You have found the reason. Great video though. Thanks Mr. Scotty.
Believe it or not but on a motorcycle you can easy ride pass a speed where your single head light wont emit light pass a few feet ahead of you. On top of that, most bikes are built to have their lights on 24/7 with no way of turning them off.
Did you say you can ride at a speed on your bike where your headlights are only able to emit light a few feet ahead of you? Are you implying that the speed your bike is going is actually comparable to the speed of light?
He probably means a few feet of relevant reaction time. Seeing downroad 500 feet at 25 mph (36 feet/s) gives you 13 seconds to react. Different than 60 mph (88 feet/s) giving you 5 seconds to react. Idk I'm grasping at straws.
Please stop advertising these bulbs. They are not DOT approved and are illegal to use in a reflector type headlamp. There's no cutoff line, so someone using them is blinding other drivers. Just look at an Acura MDX using LED headlamps and you'll see how well defined is the cutoff line. This is the difference of a headlamp unit engineered from the ground up for the use of LEDs vs a headlamp that has been engineered to use another type of lamp.
I hate these stupid led lights, especially the bluish ones that people put in pickups and SUVs, because these people don't adjust the angle and the lights blind oncoming drivers. I have nearly been in head-on collisions in my car in the winter due to these lights, you simply cannot see!
bob: My neighbor's kid down the block parks his honda on the street and leaves these high output lights on while sitting inside his car at night. Just about blinds you as you look his way as it lights up the whole street. (Don't need street lamps)
No I'm not. The nature of the LED "bulbs" where light only emits from 2 or 3 sides makes light go everywhere in a non projector lens headlight. This will blind oncoming traffic. These type of halogen headlights are NOT suitable for LED replacements
Scotty you are one crazy guy, but I love you. You have taught me so much and I have fixed countless car problems on my own thanks to you and your brilliant vids. Keep up the good work!
In the civilized world, aftermarket LED lights are not road legal for a reason. It doesn't really matter if you see better when you blind everyone coming your way. Also if the headlights are designed at the factory to work with halogens, not LEDs, you are effectively making the engineer's work useless.
So on the topic of headlights, I just put brand new headlights in my car and they need to be adjusted. What's a good general rule/beam height I should follow
No! Bad Scotty! Bad Scotty. The housing reflector is designed for halogen not LED or HID. Stop recommending these to people they are a nuisance and a safety hazard. I ask you take this video down. Bad Scotty.
Scotty, one problem is that LED runs cooler than Halogen and that causes problem in areas where we get snow. 10 minutes of running Halogen will melt all that ice. Now, I Have heard that some LED lights are coming with heaters to address that same issue. Of course, you will not have that problem in Texas. Love your videos!
I purchased a set of leds and then dust covers for my vehicle bc the bulbs would not work with the oem covers. I bought the bowl style covers and cut a tiny hole to run my wires through. It seems like there is a good amount of room for the fan on the bulb. However, I am worried that the enclosed area under the cover will act kinda like an oven and get way too hot. Should I cut some small ventilation holes or do you think that the heat will be fine considering the large bowl styled dust covers??
Hey Scotty would you have to disable your dlr's . I know hid its recommended due to bulbs blowing out. I know led's are suppose to last longer but not convinced due to heat. And your head lamp designed for halogen bulbs.
Hey scotty I have a 2002 gmc envoy and one day driving home the transmission decided to go out. about a week later I decide to start it up so it's not just sitting and out of curiosity I decide to put it in gear and it now moves? what do you think could be the problem look forward to your reply
Hey Scotty, I own a 2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i - it's notorious for burning out the left drivers side halogen bulb. It's doing this to many other owners as well. Can I replace my halogen bulb with an l.e.d bulb and have it last longer? I wouldn't have to worry about a standard filament burning out.
Would this be the same process for daytime running lights on a 2008 Honda Civic? I would like the headlights to match the daytime running lights. Thanks.
Scotty, I have the same bulb for the headlight in my motorcycle. It's super bright all right, but one big drawback is the fan. The fan will be the first thing to fail. Vibration and bumps in the road cause havoc to the fan bearing and there's only a one year warranty for the bulb.
kindly advise if led can be installed in headlights that are tight sealed by a dust cover. the whole led unit will be inside the headlight unit, so will the led heat cause an issue. Thanks

9. A Dolphin : ))
You forgot the link for the common sense.
Hey Scotty, I'm thinking about getting these LED lights for my car, are they still performing well for you?
I was just thinking about this iv seen good and bad reviews so I would like to know too. @Scottykilmer
Scotty Kilmer will they fit my 2007 honda accord?
Modern headlights do my head in, it's like everyones driving round with their full beam on
Couldn’t agree more
I can relate to that
Because most led headlights don't produce a controlled beam pattern, notice how the halogens look like a horizontal slit, good led bulbs will do that too, the wash pattern bulbs should be illegal.
Same
get a light dimming rear view mirror
Scotty, the problem here is how light is emitted in the reflector. A halogen bulb emits light at from an arc at point X in 3D space, and the LED bulb emits light from a diode at point Y in 3D space. Your reflector was only designed for the first scenario; the second results in light giong where you don't want it, wasting it and often blinding other motorists
Agreed! Need separate headlight equipment (ie projector beam) in order to not blind other motorists. These led lights might look cool, but they mostly just blind others.
"but look how bright it is"
OMG you are now my BEST FRIEND. This is a great comment thank you so much!
Agree, I hate going to my GF for this very reason on my bike, she lives of small twisty roads with no side barriers.
Same concept as throwing a cheap HID kit in reflector housings instead of a proper projector retrofit. Sadly, the average person prefers form over function and quality for free.
That's what I like straight to the point some people just make 15_20 mins videos you did it perfect good job & thanks
Love watching Scotty, he makes everything look easy.
Unless they are in projectors, won't LED's (or any non-halogen builbs) blind everyone else on the road because they're in the stock housing?
Correct. People should only use led/ hid kits on headlights with projectors.
Chris CC - Yes, if you believe the dumbbells who make stuff up as they go along and repeat what moron's say about LEDs with no basis in fact or truth. Yes,I agree. There are also some difference between led and hid kits on headlights. You can check out for some information here:www.novsights.com/
It’s fine as long as the bulb is aimed properly like I did to mine.
(at least not the ones I have tried.)
-John
So Mercedes, Audi, BMW, ect. Who use white LED's don't know what they are talking about?
Except they install them in projector housings not in halogen housings
I did as you said and bought a set. I love the new look and brightness. Thank you Scotty. love your channel.
Congratulations. No one likes you for blinding them
@@ChristopherWhite-yg4hh It's seriously annoying and there should be a limit placed on how freaking bright these lights should be.
This is the best car channel on RUclips hands down!
Hi Scotty,
You are awesome man. Thank you for all the great tips. You are a modern day guru enlightening our way to understand our cars.
If it is the truth forgive me then, I'm just justifying the truth from the others
Very well done Scotty! Keep it up! Easily overtook other mechanics who have a hard time catching up
Im buying those immediately. Great video Mr.Kilmer
Video done correctly. Everyone commenting negatively go put your own how to's,until then have some respect for the man.
Hell even then ,have respect.
Scotty you are awesome thanks for all the help and you are tons of fun the last part was hillarious!!
Great presentation Scotty, who cares if they aren't DOT legal, driving under the influence is illegal and no one complaints about that.
This is just a personal thing but I hate to see these things coming towards me on a dark two-lane road. I can't see shit. That's why I don't install them on my car if I wanted to blind people I might as well just use my high beams. Maybe my eyes are sensitive I don't know xD
nope, its the lights. i turn on my high beams when i see that shit coming
lol true, but only in really dark places that happens and usually you are runing your high beams in that case i installed led in my interior i hated not being able to see stuff when i drop it by mistake. now i kinda dislike to much light but im glad i can see my interior. i may do led lights for the whole car but at the momment im fine with the regular bulbs
You are so right. I left a large comment here read it and let me know what you think. -John
+Tyler Hacker I don't know even high end factory cars that have the right housing blind me, ya there fine in there are no bumps but as soon as that Mercedes or bmw hit a bump that led shit blinds my eyes
I’m going to buy these. I wanted led headlights for a while now
Compatibility, Legality, bulb color, Lumens, Lifespan, Warranty, price, beam pattern are all important when you choose LED headlight bulbs.
I think you meant highest color temperature (more blue)
@@homuraakemi9556
No, lowest. More reddish. As I said, lower light frequencies are reflected less by snow or rain, or fog, than higher ones.
Wish it were that easy to replace the bulbs on my Fusion, Scotty. These geniuses have designed the car to where you have to take the front bumper off the car to replace the lamp.
Whatever happened to the HIDs you previously installed in this car?
hid's are notorious for blowing out cause of the power the use is ridiculous I knlw friends who have bought and installed them and they blew out in the first week I think if their not factory do touch the hid's
Ian Huth yep. Totally agree with you. That's exactly why I didn't even bother with them in the first place
***** exactly they came like that just aftermarket with those lights steer cle5
LEDs are much better!
The dolphin haha
The dolphin earned my like. Scotty has good outros.
6 years later, the problem still persists
@Scotty Kilmer I have watched you for a long time and have learned a lot, but on this subject you are wrong, Do Not get 3 sided or anything other than 2 sides LED's.
You are a great person. I want to see you in a tv series. That talk about cars, mechanical stuff
+te34567 thanks for the support, but RUclips is the new TV!
These still aren't as bright as HID headlights. I can't stand assholes who put those headlights on their cars when they weren't designed for HID, especially the big lifted trucks who think they're cool. Especially when on a dark road in the mountains. It looks the second coming.
What does someone other car not having lights on have to do with other vehicles having lights that blind other drivers?
Ah the Scotty Kilmer charm never gets old!!
Is that the kahala dolphin ? Great show you saved me so much money from those ripoff mechanics
Dumb design.
better than being -12 regular temp with wind chill of -26 and 8 feet of snow....ya for MN winter!
+Nate W Thibodeau Well you got me there. Not even Denver is that bad lol.
Honestly I agree, I'm trying to a change a 168 size parking light on my GX470, oh god I have to remove a bunch of covers with pliers.
Hey Scotty, thanks for the showing this weeks product pack to the camera for longer!
Scotty would you say these LED bulbs are a better choice than HID lights?
HID are the best option always but they require an amplifier and different wiring than most conventional bulbs, and just sticking in one in your car is wildly illegal
yes, they are better cause they are legal, while converting most to HID is illegal in most places.
These are illegal in most places too, if they don't have the needed certifications. And I'm yet to see ones with them.
Dude I waited the end of the video. Ok.
You're really cool. Keep on. Keeping on
and no fucking annoying ballast.
Nathan unknown them ballast be fucking up your fuse when they started having issues
Nathan unknown I remember I purchased a hid low beam for 2008 odyssey from amazon. I installed it work for a week and start flickering and fucked all my fuses
Nathan unknown thank god I got rid of it. We got a new 2013 armada platinum
They have a ballast but it is not called a ballast but it is called a "LED Driver"
The ones that do not have a driver are low powered LEDs as the bright ones that cost $100+ use high end LEDs and they get driven at 2.5A or so, which is why you need a LED driver to provide that constant current and not rely on resistors
I love your channel man! Helped me out alot over the years
"TODAY IMA SHOW YOU! HOW TO DO COCAINE!!" lmao jk good vids
LOL
As the bulbs are just about same lenght and emitte light around them I do not see the issue some comments are about. The halogen lightbulb disperses the light EXACTLY the same way it standard Halogen housing. In fact, the tip of the halogen bulb is blackened out where the LED bulb doesnt project any light from the tip of it either. so its all the same but brighter. Thanks Scotty, good show!!!!!!!!
you hit the nail on the head, people get these leds confused with HID bulbs that are insanely bright and throw light every which way
"goes back into the hole"
hahaha! :)
It's a big waste of money. And your blinding people. These lights do not last and they cost about $100 each time to replace.
Please make sure though that you don't install LED headlights into housings for old halogen bulbs, halogen housings are meant to focus the light and combined with LED bulbs it's outright dangerous to oncoming drivers
A few years ago I was crossing over the ridge up at the edge of the county here, it was January and there was a foot of snow on the ground including the road.
I love your energy lol. Keep up the great work. Straight to point I like it.
"And I'll answer them as soon as I'm done fighting this grizzly bear."
Scotty, what about these new vehicle that have a computer on board that controls everything including the lights, some people have issues with the LED flickering and getting warning lights on the dash?
on those cars, leave them stock, don't change out electronics. But if they are stock, that is often the sign or weak batterys OR alternators.
I would love to put these on my car but in the state of california you cant have blue light going through the reflector lens. But i respect that because without government, who else will protect me from the dangerous blue light *sarcasm*
those are really white. if you got pulled over for that i'd take it to court lol.
I prefer factory led lighting. my accords headlights are really bright.
For some reason I've always liked the stock LED lighting on the newer accords
If the LEDs are stock then they are designed to work properly and according to DOT rules. Adding these lights aftermarket is not the answer to lighting the dark road ahead of you.
+Collin Sexton driving at night is totally awesome. everything is bright and visible.
Then what do you suggest +Big Guy Review ?
You, jackass, are one of those people.
+Jonathan Anderson no you are the jackass. My lights are aimed properly. I do my own work, and verify. Seems you will be that person, as you do not even verify your comments.
You may be the first guy to do it, I've been across the country and have yet to see one set of LED aftermarket lights that don't look like shit.
Very cool Scotty. That beach looks really nice, I don't think I would ever come back. Haha
These new led lights are evil. They're way too bright.
some folks need to properly aim & aligned their headlights!
I have been blinded a few times
they are too bright if they dont use them right. leds are better when they are put in a projector housing. they dont produce glare.
Ya, 6500K (which is what LED's natively are) sucks. Lights need to be 5000K max, ideally 4300K is the best color.
Just ordered a pair from Amazon thanks Scotty
This is not DOT Legal. The increased glare is BLINDING to other drivers. As an optometrist, I strongly encourage you to change back to halogens that are properly in focus in that housing if you plan to drive it on the street. This is 100% illegal to use on the road.
true of hids, but not leds, just got mine inspected last week with the leds in
Your inspector is a fool and a charlatan. Here's the DOT Law: www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?node=se49.6.571_1108
S6.5.3.4 Replaceable bulb headlamp markings.

Your bulbs do not have the DOT markings, and they are not DOT legal in the USA.
Good speed scotty 🤘🏾
Please DON'T install brighter headlights! They will blind the drivers in front of you.
now HID bulbs are really bright, but these leds are really no problem when you use correctly designed leds. May modern cars come stock with em as they also use less power hence slightly increase gas mileage.
Well, if people don't have the brains to make sure their headlights are aimed properly, any bulb will produce glare. Projector housings are bullshit - not needed for LEDs if the driver aims the lights correctly.
Somerset Frisby how would you aim leds though? I took a course in automotive inspection, and the instructor had no idea.
YES USE THEM BECAUSE NOW YOU CAN SEE THE ROAD😉
For older cars that use halogens do you need to change the whole headlight assembly to be able to use leds?
I hate how bright these LED bulbs are. They seriously need a dim option for when driving in city limits just so you don't accidentally blind other drivers. Anytime one of these cars comes at me in the dark on the way home from work i always see sunspots for 30 seconds after. Even if i look away. My solution right now is to just close my eyes until the offending car goes past. Xenon bulbs are even worse. May halogen bulbs reign supreme for all eternity+^_^+
Look to the right edge of the road to avoid the lights.
I got a set of these for my 1996 Subaru Legacy cost around $150 easy to install and they are a nice improvement
If you have these on your car, stop wondering why motorcyclists flip you off everytime you go out. You have found the reason.
Great video though. Thanks Mr. Scotty.
Hate to say it but there's lots of bikers who drive with their brights on all the time yes they need to be seen but they are just as bright as a car..
Michael De Santa I always flip people off using these cause I think they have their fog lights on and are riding my ass or something
Very good to know, so you don't need any Ballast Resistor or other wiring as an opposite of the HID's ?
Please stop advertising these bulbs. They are not DOT approved and are illegal to use in a reflector type headlamp. There's no cutoff line, so someone using them is blinding other drivers. Just look at an Acura MDX using LED headlamps and you'll see how well defined is the cutoff line. This is the difference of a headlamp unit engineered from the ground up for the use of LEDs vs a headlamp that has been engineered to use another type of lamp.
Thanks for the info, Dr. Scott. you're the man
I hate these stupid led lights, especially the bluish ones that people put in pickups and SUVs, because these people don't adjust the angle and the lights blind oncoming drivers. I have nearly been in head-on collisions in my car in the winter due to these lights, you simply cannot see!
Scotty for proven new technology! A true conservative!
Make sure you blind everyone around you.
I am sure he will get flashed by other drivers.
Stock LED headlights are great, but aftermarket ones are poorly aimed since they don't reflect properly in fittings designed for halogen globes.
bob: My neighbor's kid down the block parks his honda on the street and leaves these high output lights on while sitting inside his car at night. Just about blinds you as you look his way as it lights up the whole street. (Don't need street lamps)
You are confusing LEDs with HIDs.
Hi master Scotty just want to know what you think about Honda cars ?
Never install LED lights in a car that does not have projector lens lights. You who have been a mechanic for 48 years should know this
ha, you're thinking of HID bulbs that are insanely bright, no LEDs
Keep up the good work!
watch mighty car mods ;)
No because HID's should never be installed in anything that does not have a auto leveling system.
scottie just rocks.
In the civilized world, aftermarket LED lights are not road legal for a reason. It doesn't really matter if you see better when you blind everyone coming your way. Also if the headlights are designed at the factory to work with halogens, not LEDs, you are effectively making the engineer's work useless.
Amplifier800
Agreed
So on the topic of headlights, I just put brand new headlights in my car and they need to be adjusted. What's a good general rule/beam height I should follow
No! Bad Scotty! Bad Scotty.
The housing reflector is designed for halogen not LED or HID. Stop recommending these to people they are a nuisance and a safety hazard. I ask you take this video down.
Bad Scotty.
Are they better than hid's?
I use opt7 for my led headlights had them for 2 years and no problem
I just got some that are 60w with 4 sides and leds but I'm happy with them so far
Thank you Scottty, I will buy mine now, you rule!
Love your videos!
yea, never thought of that, being in Texas. Here we just want ice cold beer
Looks like it was a hot day Scotty !! You were sweating like mad !!!
Hey Scotty would you have to disable your dlr's . I know hid its recommended due to bulbs blowing out. I know led's are suppose to last longer but not convinced due to heat. And your head lamp designed for halogen bulbs.
Just a suggestion, but for the next video, maybe you can inform us on how to properly break in a new/rebuilt engine :) Loving your videos Scotty!
He really went to talk to dolphine ! Awesome!!!! 👍👍
Stay awesome Scotty! I love your videos :D
I wouldn't have to worry about a standard filament burning out.
...And I can see the automatic white-balance adjustment on your camera operating! It's kinda like watching you eyes adjust to the light.
Might use these in my fog lights. Thanks Steve.
Great video man. Do you know if they fit in a 1998 facelift honda civic sedan? Thanks. Oh and.. Do they still work?..
they should fit, and yes, they still work on mine
Thanks Scotty. Have nice day .

Great Vid Scotty. LEDs really are the way to go. Im in process of switching my interior lights over to LED. Love the "Floating Magical Leaf" @ 1:30 :)
Scotty, you are just amazing. Good effort put into this video, thanks again man, one day I'll be as good as you ... dream on :)
kindly advise if led can be installed in headlights that are tight sealed by a dust cover. the whole led unit will be inside the headlight unit, so will the led heat cause an issue. Thanks
LOL never in my life would I have thought I'd see Scotty Kilmer holding hands with a dolphin!
Scotty, can you do a video if you want to bypass the ballast and go from hid to led?
what a great video, I love your energy!
